We've become regulars at Spoke and Barrel in Mandeville and we have never been disappointed. Today we lunched outdoors on the terrace with a party of six and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. It was a great October afternoon overlooking the trailhead and the Louisiana ambiance was notable. Service was especially welcoming, with a server who well understood the menu and was eager to share her knowledge. We enjoyed a range of favorites, including specialty sandwiches, crispy Brussels sprouts, bib salad, Caesar salad with chicken, and some frosty brews. Waiter was extremely polite, the inside wasp clean with a very cool bar, nice outside seating area, and the Chicken Caesar Club was huge and delicious (and under $20 which is crazy reasonable nowadays). We ate here when they first opened and were not impressed, but we decided to give them another try. Ribeye steak had great flavor and the garlic fries were marvelous. So many fries that I couldn't finish. My wife had the spare rib & polenta which was delicious. Menu selection is limited as is the wine selection, but what they do they do well. The menu and food were actually good. Nightly specials are affordable. Ambiance is not good but acceptable for a dive bar/restaurant. The staff, while small, were pleasant and honest that they were doing their best. Good menu variety. We need to support it as it a good staple. I will give them another chance and I am particular. Wife & I ate here for lunch after discovering it on Yelp. Wife had the steak po boy with fries; I had the parmesean crusted chicken breast with mashed potatoes and grilled Brussel sprouts. The food was well-prepared and tasty. The fries were just right - not soggy but not burnt. Brussel sprouts had a good appearance and had a pleasant taste, even to a non-sprout fan. The server was attentive and was readily available for drink refills. My big disappointment, however, is that the menu accessed online was nothing like what we were given at the restaurant. Not only did the online menu have almost double the selections, there were several items seen online that looked mighty attractive, only to find those items were not on the current menu. Cost was around $27 per person including tip. I give Spoke and Barrel an overall thumbs up for lunch, just don't get set on the online menu items. read more

2022 Update* This is a tough updated review for me. Old Rail is where I took everyone that came in town to visit me for family, friends, and business. After the reopening after COVID, Old Rail went completely down hill. They quit table service. There were two people working the bar and restaurant when I visited yesterday. The place was empty and that's a huge change from the past. Now, there are many reason for this and I know I lot of people that used to work here and they always quit because of how they were treated but I won't go into details. The food went down hill but they have a new chef now and it's better but not great. I had a "Cuban Sandwich" that had BBQ pulled pork. The place is not maintained anymore. I have added a picture of the seats that are tearing apart. The main reason I came here so often was the beer. Old Rail had the best brewed beer on the Northshore. Now the brewer is leaving, and they will no longer brew beer in house. It was a fun run of some amazing beers. I will truly miss coming here. My family and I have some great memories here. read more

Went there last night and had the Steak with Chimichurri and Hand cut Fries and a side of roasted veggies, excellent!! The meat was cooked just perfect and very tasty and the veggies which I think were root veggies, delicious! I've been wanting to try Spoke and Barrel for a while now. Today, I ordered 2 of their Reuben Sandwiches and some potato salad to be delivered by Door Dash. The sandwiches were literally inedible. Someone must have accidentally spilled their entire salt shaker on the corned beef. The meat was so salty, all you could taste was salt. I'm not exaggerating. I had to throw the sandwiches out. Surprisingly, the potato salad didn't seem to have any seasoning at all. It was bad enough that I won't be giving them another chance. read more

First time dining here and it was fantastic!!! We had the bleu cheese chips for an appetizer and they were delicious! House made chips not too thin and not too thick. So this place has been renamed to Spoke and Barrel, they've been around 10 years and from what I understand the brewer parted ways to open a brewery in the city.... The food doesn't match the quality of what it was before they closed without warning (and then it had fallen from grace). We had a crawfish mac n cheese appetizer - while the past was good, and I liked the Panko & Crawfish on top whatever cheese they used made the dish oily and heavy vs. a creamy goodness. We also had a couple of burgers, somehow the bottom half of my bun was soaked and the burger itself was on the dry side. the sprouts were good and my daughter like the potato salad, but the burgers themselves were lackluster. Buns looked like they came from Walmart tbh. The Servers were friendly, my only complaint there is that we waited for around 20 minutes for food, at which point a boiling hot appetizer came followed 2 minutes later by our main dishes, so I'm not sure we got the best of those. Ambiance, well the server told us the work they were doing was all on the back half, and replacing the bar. everything else was bare paint, save a few of the old skateboards on the wall in the back, could have been a pop up in an office building, the lighting wasn't great, and not that it isn't normally a little dim in there but this time even the waitress said it looks like we've got a couple of bulbs out... Overall I was really happy to see them reopen, but based on this visit I'm not going to be running back in anytime soon. read more

To start, the service was good. We were checked on frequently and the waitress could tell we were not pleased with the food. The beer was ok, the espresso martini was not good. The truffle fries were dry. The gumbo was not cooked enough, extremely salty, and you could tell it had been sitting for a while as there was a thick film on top. The chicken Caesar sandwich was ok but all the lettuce on it was brown. The potato salad had no seasoning. It was bland and soggy. I would not recommend this restaurant. read more

This used to be one of our favorite places but it went downhill for a while. Since they reopened as Spoke and Barrel the food has been really great. We've been in several times for lunch and dinner and then went with a group. Everyone enjoyed their meals. They have some very creative specials and the fresh fish has been delicious. I don't like to leave bad reviews in general, so this is difficult to say. I ordered the Reuben sandwich with fries. The meat was black, really dry and very salty. There was barely any sauerkraut on it, either. The bread was good but over-buttered with something that was not butter. It was oily. I only ate half the sandwich. Then, we had to find our server to get our check and pay. Never saw him and asked a different server to help us. She was helpful, but seemed a little annoyed. Couldn't get out of there fast enough and probably won't be back. read more

I've given Spoke and Barrel a couple opportunities to redeem themselves but they've failed. The food is subpar at best. The only good thing about the restaurant is the bar. We had a fantastic experience for lunch! Our waiter, Chris, was very friendly, knowledgeable and polite. I ordered the chicken Caesar sandwich. The flavor was amazing, and the portion size was great. My husband ordered the fish of the day which was stripped sea bass. This, too, was absolutely phenomenal. My only complaint would be the portion was pretty small. We also ordered the bread pudding. Service was great however the food was mediocre and WAY overpriced. I got an appetizer as my entree. I ordered the braised pork belly with apple salad which amounted to two pieces of thick bacon and about 1/3 cup of homemade coleslaw with apples in it. This small plate cost $14. My husband ordered the steak and fries entree which had a rather small steak (maybe 6oz) and a large pile of fries which cost a whopping $40! Our son ordered a child's plate of chicken tenders with fries which was reasonably priced at only $7. Our son had more food on his plate than our two combined. For a restaurant decorated with skateboards and bicycle wheels I was not expecting this high a price point. Unfortunately, this will be a first and last time dining here. read more

Went for a weekday lunch and sat outside in their beautiful patio. I was craving a salad with shrimp and the mixed greens burrata salad with grilled shrimp added on top was perfection. I loved the grilled cauliflower and romesco mixed in as it made it feel like a heart meal. The picture online showed no mixed greens which was confusing since I wanted a "salad" for lunch. Luckily it had it all. Wasn't crazy about the chicken Caesar sandwich my husband ordered as it was very heavy, mayonnaise-ey/ really nothing special. The service was good in that the waitress was friendly and helpful. She checked on us at least three times. The food on the other hand was not good. My wife and I both got the chicken dish. The chicken was flat as though it was pounded (I expected a chicken breast). The real problem was when you cut it the breading fell off. The worst was it tasted as thought it had been fried in OLD oil. It left a bad taste in your mouth. The veggies were not tasty either. The mashed potatoes had large chunks of potato. The chef here is really good; attention to detail with flavors and presentation. Had a 'special' of the day which was an amazing salad with fresh cut peaches, heirloom tomatoes, fresh basil topped with prosciutto. Could use a few more purely vegetarian options (although they are happy to omit bacon if asked). Service was very good. Grossly expensive and gross food! The waitress was kind and friendly but not very attentive. The place looks nice but there was a mild smell of seafood that was not appealing. Now for the food...had we not paid $20 a plate and been hungry, we would not have eaten our dinner. The only decent thing and of a nice proportion was the parmesan crusted caesar chicken sandwich at $15 (which they almost ruined with an overload of dressing drenched romaine). Everything else was gross; especially the oil-soggy lukewarm fries! The Diavolo pasta was drenched with way too much sauce, a little too spicy, poorly cooked hard pasta which was not fettuccine and was not al dente, five medium-sized chewy shrimp, and gristle filled andouille and let me reiterate, drowning in sauce that was something but not Diavolo sauce! The pappardelle pasta bolognese was not traditional and had a strange taste that was not good and meat was gross. This dish was also drenched in sauce! I questioned the staff and found out that it's the same chef as this place had when it was Old Rail. If that's so, he was not good then but got worse, and not better at all! I do not recommend this place! Total shame because it's such a nicely designed building and a great location but the food sucks! With tip and drinks, $90 not well spent! read more

My friend and I stopped in here to grab a few local beers and some food. The place was kinda dead for a friday night, but I'm not holding that against anyone, it wasn't very warm that night..lol I was checking out the beer selection, and I have to say, there wasn't much of one. There were only about 5 beers on tap, and none were good. I say this because 1) I tasted all of them 2) NOBODY at the bar had a beer!! It was very comical to say the least. Everybody had mixed drinks which is kinda weird since it is a brewery. Anyway, you will see pictures of their Bloody Mary's. Do yourself a favor and order one, they are awesome!! This is my third time here, first time was amazing, second was lousy this time was good. Service was excellent, food was very good - but..., atmosphere was just ok. The food very good flavors, hot, quick, and nice size portions. The only issues were with the shrimp they were over cooked but good flavor and the rye bread was toasted hard, crunchy crouton hard. Again the flavors were very good and I would only take a half star off for those minor issues but the music was painful. When we walked in we almost turned around, the music was loud and acid rock but we were hungry. The crew working is young so that explains the music. Luckily someone turned it down and changed format before I had to ask. Disclaimer I am 50 but most of the customers were over 40, might want to think about a lunch music policy. The music lost a complete star. Well I am going with a 4 star, 3.5 would be more appropriate. Might be back we will see. read more
