I've had Spinning Dough bookmarked forever, but only ever seemed to find myself on San Pablo in a rush on the way to work. Finally stopped in for some pizza to go and it was well worth it. This is some of the best pizza I've had in Oakland! Called and ordered and it was ready for us on arrival. Takeout only during covid times and they were happy to let us pay via phone to minimize contact points. There was no one else in there except the friendly guy making the pies, making this a safe and pleasant takeout experience. The pizza was delicious. A thin and ever so slightly crunchy crust, topped with a subtly sweet and quite flavorful tomato sauce. The vegetarian pie wasn't like most veggie pizzas, which I usually don't like. This one was thoughtfully done with goat cheese, mushrooms, potatoes, and olives. There's some good pizza around town, but I would put this one in my top three. Would eat here again! read more

Dear Spinning Dough: I NEED you to survive COVID and stay open as the best (?!?!) pizza joint in Oakland. I am IN LOVE with your pepperoni as well as mushroom pizzas!!!! Grabbed the Ube and Pepperoni pizzas for takeout. They were both delicious! The crust is thin and chewy, the toppings are high quality, and the pies are big. The pepperoni was solid but the Ube was standout! I loved the ube ricotta, delicately sweet and delicious. The flavors on the were perfectly balanced, I definitely wanna try more of their specialties. The owner came out and was really friendly, too. Great neighborhood spot overall. read more

If you are craving pizza, please support this place. It's off the beaten path on the San Pablo corridor and has the most amazing crust - not greasy at all. The owner is very kind and responsive to requests. And good pizza elevates our CoVid beverages. I mean, if you are going to binge Netflix why wouldn't you get a pizza that can keep you happy? We have been coming here since they opened. This is the type of local business that needs strong community support right now. They are among the best we have got. This spot is easily one of the hottest pizza places in not just the east bay but the entire bay area. When I say hot, its not just the pizza or the wings, oh no. Its the vibe, the service, and the energy that exudes from the very fingertips of the pizza makers all the way to your table. The pizzas are fresh af without a doubt, they're delicious just as they are creative and I can tell the team puts a lot of care and thought into each pie made. Not only that, there were some wing flavors here I've never tried and it just shows how much effort was put into this menu. The Ube pizza is indeed social media worthy but make sure you take the time to truly enjoy how unique it is in flavor as well. I also took a liking to the corn pizza, this isnt your average pizza parlor. Its more than that, it's family it's unique and most importantly it's absolutely delicious to share or have on your own... promise i wont judge. read more

We are locals from just up the street off San Pablo..and soooo happy to have finally had the pleasure of dining here! Beers were so crisp and cold to start, Caesar salad was definitely made with the perfect amount of pepper and parm and the, ooooh man.... that PIZZA!!! Dough was so perfect, I can't even begin to tell you, great texture, perfect crust , and the touch of garlic olive oil brushed on the edge it was a kiss from pizza heaven!! We ordered half & half of the corn with pesto and the veggie with potato and olives.. mmm mmm mmm such elegant ingredients but huge flavor! The chef was so generous and gave us a free tirimisu, which was such a bonus cuz who doesn't love a lil something sweet after the PERFECT meal!?? 100000% percent will be back! Discovered Spinning Dough during Oakland Restaurant Week and thought the pizza was amazing. (Also great wings and tiramisu). We tried the blackberry pizza and the miso mushroom and both were delicious. Lots of creative pizzas with many options for both vegetarian and meat. We liked the thin crust and it reheated great the next day. Plentiful parking in front of the store. We agree it's a hidden gem in an unexpected part of northwest Oakland. I didn't know what to expect when trying ube pizza but I was pleasantly surprised. The blend of savory and sweet was perfect! It was also cool to aesthetically be eating a purple pizza! This is so much more than just a pizza joint! The thought that went in to putting the menu was genius! The service and conversation makes you feel like you came home to visit family! I will admit at first I was not sure because of the location. The area is in the hood I'm gonna keep it real, but how many great spots would we miss out on if you just focus on that.... It's crazy how well-balanced the flavor in ingredients come together. There was a lot of thought in creating some of the recipes and you can tell that the result. We ordered the pizza of the month, which was a blackberry and a Ube pizza which was just beautiful! The Ube and ricotta was insanely good. They have so many interesting pieces on the menu. We also ordered a longanisa sausage pizza. I can't wait to go back and try the sea food pizza and the other great items. I hope their business grows and is around for a long time. The business deserves more than 5 star, but I have to factor the location. They are no joke this is a hidden gem that deserves a shot on Triple D! read more

My family and I had a craving for pizza and stumbled upon Spinning Dough and couldn't have walked away happier. The crust on this pizza-so crispy, so perfect. We ordered wings and salads too and everything was delicious. The outdoor patio has a great vibe, perfect for a summer day. The staff was also so kind and attentive. Came here to try the ube pizza. It was so good. Possibly the best pizza I've ever had. I loved the thin crust and everything that was on the pizza. It was just so good. I could taste a mild sweetness from the ube and savory from the sausage and green onion. Everything tasted fresh. We also got a half sausage half prosciutto pizza. My husband really liked the sausage pizza. I'm pretty sure they make the sausage there. It was really good. The lady that seated us and brought our food was very nice and helpful. The owner even came out to see how we were doing. He was also very nice. We will definitely be back. read more

$29 pizza in not the swankiest part of town seems kind of cray, no? Alas, the price of pizza these days. However, kind of sad, since I'm imagining the people in the actual neighborhood probably aren't frequenting this spot. The pizza is solid. A thin crust, although not the most flavorful. It is however large; 2 slices is a solid meal and I believe each of these are 8. I've sampled a ton of different pies here over a few different times and sadly, none stood out. 1) I don't love their tomato sauce. Not a ton of flavor that comes thru. 2) I do like their pesto/white pies. The place is cute inside, as I've eaten in once. The most recent times have been take out and the pies are usually done in 20-30 minutes, which is great! Overall, I've given them a few tries and although the 'za is solid, I think I'll stick to my more local spots: Nick's & Emilia's. read more

I ordered a pepperoni pizza. It's just one size 18" it's pretty big. The pizza is more of a New York style. Big pieces that are very thin and you have to fold and hold lol. I'm glad I only got one topping because I'm not sure the crust could handle a lot more. It was very good and a ton of flavor and the delivery was very fast. Especially for a Friday night. I would order from them again. I would like to try the margarita next time. I also ordered chocolate cake and it was pretty decent. read more

Ok let me start by saying the food is a 4.8 only reason not a 5 is because the seafood pizza is pretty basic tasting lacks a little flavor. We also tried the Longanisa pizza and Ube and both were 5 stars ! My personal fave is the Longanisa , so much flavor I could have ate the whole thing myself haha. Service is a bit slow so be prepared to wait awhile. Overall definitely will be coming back and I recommend you check it out if you are ever in Oakland. Well done read more

Born and raised in NY. I'm a simple guy. Cheese pie or pepperoni pie. Pizza is all about the crust and sauce, if you care more about toppings, you don't know real pizza! This place is the best pizza I've had since moving to California over a decade ago. NOTHING comes even remotely close to this pizza. If you are a true NY style pizza fan, this is where you need to go. We used to live down the street from this place and would get it at least once a week, now we live in Sacramento and I will happily travel 1.5+ hours for this pizza. read more

We stopped in here to eat our feelings about having just hit a pothole so hard two of our tires exploded. Oakland. The person who welcomed us was maybe the best server on earth? She was so friendly and kind, being super helpful with our insane toddler especially (high chair placement, extra water, generally being patient). It smelled delicious inside and Aladdin was playing on a TV, which made our 9 year old happy. We ordered a half-and-half pizza, which was a $4 upcharge. We got half pepperoni, half Hawaiian and both sides were delish. Very fresh, crispy crust, not greasy whatsoever. Just real pizza, from a real (extremely hot) oven. We loved it. When you're in the mood for pizza, treat yourself to something high quality and check these nice people out. read more

Excellent pizza, very nice people. Been there a few times pretty early in the day so I don't know if it gets rowdy later on in the evening but it's always been a chill experience. The longaniza pizza was my favorite, the ube pizza was fun but a touch sweet for me, the wife and kid love that one. The corn pie was good as well. Most importantly they stretch the dough perfectly, it's got bite but isn't dry, I could hear the first bite that the people behind us took. It's probably my favorite pizza spot for a casual pizza with an elevated touch. To sum things up they have the classics covered as well creative options that don't feel gimmicky. read more

Really bomb pizza. Seriously, one of the best I've had! Creative topping mixtures on their pizzas, with thin crust like NY style. Butttt the price tag was a bit extreme - our pizza came out to $40!!!! Good thing it was huge.. The tastiness almost made it worth it though lol We got half Margherita pizza and added prosciutto, and the other half as bacon. We definitely enjoyed the bacon side the most! Bacon pizza comes with Brussel sprouts and cauliflower, and it was just the perfect combo. So smoky from the bacon & Brussel sprouts, and honestly delicious! Margherita was good too, but nothing could top the bacon pizza. The crust was soo hard though for the entire pizza, like stale bread, but I still ate it. It hurt my teeth :'( Just keep in mind - doing a pizza half half costs an additional $4 which I wasn't aware of. also, they don't have ranch here, but the two sauces they do have (blue cheese and a house made creamy mint sauce) are really good with their pizza! Great pizza with amazingly wonderful sides. try the brussel sprouts--really a surprise and a delight. I love pepperoni pizza--theirs reminds me of my time in New York. Definitely worth it. The group also had the mushroom pizza which was good--it definitely is great for the vegetarians and a good adjunct to the pepperoni pizza. Small, local, well run, friendly staff. It is a bit in a 'no man's land' and from the outside seems darks; the upside is there is easy parking and it is very comfortable inside. read more

I got the prosciutto pizza--at first I thought the prices were high, but the pie is HUGE, so I am still eating it 3 days later... It was delivered quickly, and I was really happy with my choice. The prosciutto pie comes with a bechemel sauce and arugula on top. Prosciutto and bechemel make for a delicious combo--especially for the salt lovers. The arugula adds a nice counter to the delicious saltiness of the sauce/prosciutto... it is a thin crust, perfectly crispy and bubbly around the edges... maybe my new favorite pizza place? Man! This is good stuff! Hadn't had real good pizza in a lonnnggg time! So good! Caprese Salad, Pepperoni Pizza, Seafood Pizza, and Maple Chili Pepper Wings. Da Bomb! I love the thin crust and fresh ingredients. The basil on the Caprese Salad was so fresh and delicious and the balsamic vinegar mixed with olive oil was just right. Loved the super thin crust. was never really a fan of crust unless it was cheese filled and even then. Got half prosciutto half margarita. Both were great but definitely loving the red sauce more with the margarita. Would be nice if we could customize it a bit more. Got take out so not much to say about service. When I went to pick up the server was very nice and prompt. 5 stars to her. From what I saw inside when I picked up it would be a nice sit down pizza place but I can see it getting crowded fast. read more

Let's get right to it: 1) This is New York style pizza and you don't choose your size cuz they're all 18 inches. Just pick what kind of pizza you want. 2) Their drafts are pricier but if you're going to carry a Jasmine IPA, then yes...I'll pay that bit of extra for some deliciousness in a (very) tall glass. 3) There's not much else around here. The space is cute and the service is good but majority of the ppl were there to pick-up and bounce. Atmosphere can be dead if you're there in colder weather and the patio is closed. read more

This place makes pretty good expensive pizza. But I'm over it now. Strike 1: Inconsistent hours with no effort to update their hours on the website, yelp, or Google listings. Several times I've walked or driven out there to find out it's closed, even though their hours said otherwise. So always call first. You can never be sure they'll be open, even if it's a Friday or Saturday night. Strike 2: I ordered a salad for delivery and they didn't include dressing. For the price, that's pretty ridiculous. Strike 3: Their sign says "PIZZA BEER PATIO." On a hot Sunday afternoon around 4:30 I called to confirm they were open, because it was a perfect day to get some beer and pizza outside. After walking there for 10-15 we were told the patio was closed. The interior or this place is dark, muggy, and oppressive. It was a perfect sunny California day, not to mention there is an airborne virus going around. I can't fathom why they would close the patio; like their inconsistent hours, it's a decision that will only lose them business. And they've lost mine permanently. read more

We grabbed two of these specials for a group of six and still had leftovers, so I'd say one combo easily feeds three people and could probably stretch to four as long as no one is absolutely starving. The pizzas themselves are ultra thin but still hold up structurally since you can lift and fold each slice without everything collapsing, which is exactly how I like to inhale my pizza. I personally wish the crust were just a touch more burnt and crackly on the edges, but even without that extra char, the flavor and bouncy chew of the dough were spot on. We ordered the Hot Italian and the Sausage & Roasted Garlic pies and absolutely loved both, especially the housemade sweet Italian sausage that appears on each, which is savory, slightly sweet, and super satisfying in every bite. Their house tomato sauce deserves its own shout out because it hits that ideal balance of sweetness and acidity and ties everything together perfectly. On the Sausage & Roasted Garlic it plays beautifully with the rich roasted garlic purée, and on the Hot Italian it stands up nicely to the Calabrian chilis and chili oil without getting lost. The sea salt chocolate chip cookies that come with the special are huge and packed with chocolate chips, and that little hit of salt really enhanced the flavors but the something about the texture was a bit off for me as it wasn't quite chewy or crumbly but rather something in between, which left me a little confused. Another big plus is that Violetta has a full bar so you can pair your meal with a beer, a glass of wine, or a cocktail to match whatever pie you are in the mood for. Between the quality of the ingredients, the thoughtfulness of the flavor combinations, and the generosity of the Restaurant Week deal, Pizzeria Violetta is an easy recommend and a spot I would happily return to with a group (or by myself with plenty of leftovers!).

I really liked the tiny pep they used, they curl up when baked. This pizza was the perfect combo of sweet and savory, I bet it would be even better with some balsamic drizzled on it too. We also ordered a side of their blue cheese and basil ranch. I didn't know ranch could get any better than plain ranch. Basil ranch was bright and also creamy. I've been here a few times before to watch a warriors game. They've got tons of seating and of course they stream all of the games. I've tried the thick crust focaccia pizza and wasn't as impressed as with the thin slice. As for the location, it is street parking, but I have never struggled to find parking. The shop itself is a little small, with a couple tables outside and some inside. The service is quick and the pizza is always hot!

I simply was not interested in signing anything or stopping to discuss a petition at that moment. It escalated to the point where two other women nearby also felt uncomfortable enough to respond. One said, "This is not the way to do it," and another said, "I don't even have money." It was unfortunate that his approach put people in that position. Just a heads up for anyone visiting: be prepared to be approached at the crosswalk, especially since the light can be long. On a positive note: the pizzeria itself was busy, but everyone inside was pleasant, I found a quiet corner to sit, the coffee was warm, and my $3 slice and $1.25 coffee hit the spot.

Located in a somewhat sketchy part of Oakland, Spinning Dough is a hidden gem for pizza lovers. The casual ambiance of the restaurant is perfect for a laid-back meal, with the added bonus of a large patio for outdoor dining. There's a small section for indoor dining as well, but I found it a bit dark and preferred the patio. What sets Spinning Dough apart from other pizza joints is their creative pizza options. They're best known for their the ube pizza, which is a must-try for anyone looking to expand their pizza horizons. Something interesting they do here is rotate their monthly pizza specials. It's a good way for them to test out a new recipe, and if something becomes popular enough, they add it to their permanent menu. The monthly special for August is a dessert pizza with nutella with fresh strawberries and bananas on top! I came with a large group for dinner on Sunday around 6 pm. We had called ahead to let the restaurant know, so they had the patio ready for us upon arrival. I sat with 9 others at a long wooden picnic table and shared three pizzas: the ube, longanisa, and blackberry. Their pizzas are all 18" (XL) in size and range from from $28 to $36 dollars, and the 3 that we got were all $36. One pizza easily fed 3-4 people, depending on hunger levels. We ordered 3 pizzas between the 10 of us and that was the perfect amount. While all three pizzas were delicious, the longanisa was my favorite due to the combination of longanisa and runny egg on top. The sweet and savory combination of the blackberry pizza was also a pleasant surprise, but I personally prefer savory flavors so I'm not sure if I'd get it again. The ube was good as well, but it was a bit hard to pick out the flavor of ube from the rest of the pizza. Overall, the friendly service and unique pizza options make Spinning Dough a standout in the Oakland dining scene.
