Was a little surprised when I walked in as the place its pretty small, maybe a dozen tables. The buffet was also pretty limited in variety, with about 10 total choices. But, each dish was really flavorful and nicely done. The butter chicken, tandoori chicken, and goat curry were my favorites. They were tender and freshly made. Their white basmati had strands of caramelized onions which I loved and their samosa was so good (and super filling). Owner asked me where I was from as I was getting food from the buffet. I told him where I'm from and he told me that this is America and you shouldn't wear sandals to a restaurant, as Americans don't like it. He had a very bad energy about him. Then an Indian couple walked in wearing sandals, he didn't say anything to them. They even stuck their hand in the buffet and took some onion bhajis without getting told off. "you better give this place 5 stars!" - my friends after a buffet lunch today. We came based on my neighbor's recommendation, and he didn't steer us wrong! While the buffet is small (smallest I've ever been to), the quality is top notch. When we first walked in, there were only two other people. However, several people from all over (as far as an hour's drive) walked through the doors while we were dining to pick up food from here. THAT'S how good the food is. I actually loved that it was on the smaller side because I was able to try, and truly appreciate the flavor in, each individual dish, instead of forgetting what I had eaten halfway through the meal. Oof! This place ain't it. Outside of the naan and the samosas, nothing else we ordered was worth eating. I swear they gave me the worst piece of goat meat ever served to a person. That meat was so tough I wouldn't even serve it to my dog! My wife's lamb was tender but lacked any depth of flavor (just sad for a Desi restaurant). They gave us water in plastic bottles, and never once returned to offer us more water (I usually drink 20oz of water with big meals, 12 ain't getting it digested). No service whatsoever other than taking the order and walking out the food, even though my wife and I were the only two people in the entire restaurant!! After finishing what was mildly edible and sending back 95% the goat curry untouched, we waited for 15 minutes for them to bring the check, but it never came. Instead, I had to walk to the counter and pay, and of course she still flipped that screen around for me to enter a tip! Just awful. Now, I'm adding a second star because we watched them go above and beyond for an elderly lady by pulling her car up in the rain and helping her place her large takeout order in before helping her to the car. That was genuinely decent. I don't know if maybe they just hate middle aged white guys (an actual experience common in MoCo), but this felt like the way we were treated when we would eat at restaurants as a mixed race family in Indiana where the KKK was headquartered for most of the 20th century! I stumbled upon this place on my way to the dutch market. Saw the lunch special and thought, 'why not?' So glad I did!! The indian spiced fry fish is absolutely delish and my parents love the fried tilapia. You can tell fish is very fresh and does that have that odor that fry fish sometimes have. I'm not an Indian food connoisseur by any stretch, but this lunch buffet was worth the 10 bucks. I can't name anything I had on my plate, but everything I had was generally good. The food was flavorful, although some dishes could use a little salt. Their take on rice pudding was interesting. I could taste ginger and some other flavor that I've never had in rice pudding before. It was pretty good. If I had to pick a favorite, it would be the red chicken. Again, I have no clue what it is or how they prepared it, but you'll know it when you see it. We were the only ones there during our visit, so at first I was a little suspicious about the how good the food was. Fortunately, in this case, looks were deceiving. I was so pleasantly surprised by this place. It opened up just a month ago and I was checking out their menu online. They moved from Rockville to Germantown. I was in the mood for some kabob and figured it was worth checking out. It's located next to Mr. K and the Dutch market on Wisteria. Ample parking spots. We got there and while the decor isn't fancy, it was neat and clean and casual enough. We were promptly seated. Browsing the menu we ordered the chicken pakora, a peshawari naan, chiken malai tikka and karahi gosht (lamb) - the latter two came with rice. This was for 3 people. The chicken pakora was fine enough, served with two chutneys. Think of it like chicken fingers but indian style. But the Chicken Malai Tikka was SO good. The karahi gosht was not overly spicy and more importantly not drowning in oil like a lot of other indian places. The rice/polao served with those dishes were excellent, and fluffy. And the peshawari naan was soft and delicious. Honestly I can't rave about the food enough. And best of all our bill came out to $34, and we have leftovers. Customer service was excellent- We were offered mishti doi - which is sweet yogurt- on the house. Best of all, there are off menu items available at times, like mughlai parathas which you might need to ask about. And if you know what those are, you know you gotta have it. I plan on going back next week to check those out. If you're in MoCo in Germantown, you *have* to try this place out. Your taste buds will thank you. Not a lot of people know about this place, but whilst we were there the few people who were also there are now regulars because they tried the place and fell in love with the food. Great Bangladeshi/Indian food in the area! The rice tastes like my family made it which was my favorite part. My mom and I tried the Noorani Kabob and ?Vegetable Malai Kofta. Both entreés tasted very fresh and the flavors were spot on. The Noorani kabob was on the spicer side so if you don't mind some heat, try that. The owners are very kind and Peter went above and beyond to made sure we were happy with our food. If I lived closer to the restaurant, I would probably order to go as often as I could. read more

If you love tasty Indian food then look no more because spice grill is the answer. The main chef Mr. Peter Gomes is a real hands-on trained chef who probably started at an early age from back in India continent and worked his way up to this point. I know how to cook myself and I have had conversation with the chef Gomes at various occasions and I have put to the test by asking some about some very authentic dishes and I have to agree he knows his food inside out.. However, I give this restaurant 9.5 out of 10 because the food is so tasty that sometimes I feel his portions could be a bit more to satisfy our belly.. I've been coming here pretty consistently for over a year now, and I'm sad to say it's no longer a 5-star place for me... I know! I'm heartbroken, too. See, the thing is they don't have enough help. Well, that's one of the things. Having just one person taking carry-out orders and waiting tables isn't efficient. They get overwhelmed and this poorly impacts customer service. Plus, whenever I've placed an order over the phone, I have never once been told the price or wait time. I've always had to call back and ask because I get hung up on right after placing my order. That's not cool. And as great of a deal as the lunch buffet is ($10 for all-you-can-eat), the dishes are simply never kept hot enough. There's nothing worse than lukewarm curry. Sometimes, I come in during lunch time and still order from the menu because at least I know the food will be hot. Menu items have been wonky as well. As another review mentioned, their gosht is often more like jalfrezi. I know they put their own spin on recipes, but you can't say something is one thing and serve another thing. That doesn't fly with authentic desi people. We can tell the difference. They also don't serve any kinds of chaats and have been removing menu items that they previously had, which is a little strange. With all of this being said, I still enjoy a lot of their food, especially the chicken madras, palak paneer, and vegetable biryani. Their gulab jamun remains one of the best and lightest I've had. And being Pakistani, I've had a lot! The food is what gives this place 4 stars instead of 3 for me now. What I think they need to do is hire more help outside of the kitchen, get better heated dishes for the buffet, and improve on customer service. read more

Went to Spice Grill today, Sunday, for lunch. Loved the offerings in the buffet- from some veggie entrees to chicken and beef. Perfectly seasoned and delicious. We ordered mango lassi and samosas as add ons. Both were perfect. The samosas were flaky and not greasy. The mango lassi sweet not to thick or watery. The service was excellent and timely. Spice Grill has been opened since October, and this little restaurant offers authentic Indian/Bengali cuisine. Owner, Mr. Peter, has owned several restaurants, and has opened Spice Grill to offer items such as samosas, pakora, tandoori charcoal bbqs, biryani, chicken/lamb/fish/vegetarian entrees, and desserts. The hubs and I were in the area, and we decided to try their lunch buffet option. I was able to sample their tandoori chicken (the meat was really juicy and tender, and extremely flavorful; I was surprised at the depth of the flavor of the meat, as it was just not on the exterior), lamb (a little gamey for me, but the hubs enjoyed this dish a lot, as it had nice chunks of tender meat); chicken biryani (the basmati rice was well-flavored with chunks of chicken); chicken kashmiri (creamy and nutty, with chunks of boneless chicken; great to dip the naan into for the sauce); chana masala (perfectly-cooked chick peas, I thought this was a little less thick as I would have liked; however, the flavor was really good); creamed spinach; and, fresh naan that is made-to-order. We even tried the garlic naan, which was pretty good, and one of the better ones I've tried at an Indian restaurant! While the buffet isn't quite extensive, each dish was flavorful and unique in its taste, which we really appreciated - this was great, as it wasn't a large variety of mediocre taste, but that each entree was thoughtfully prepared. I wasn't really a fan of their desserts, the gulab jamun and the rice pudding, but since I was so stuffed from the buffet, I didn't mind! Mr. Peter was really nice and told us a little about the restaurant; I'd love to come back during their dinner to order from their menu, such as their fish and curry specialties. If i'm not mistaken, the owners used to run the India Garden in Rockville before the lease expired, then opened the Spice Grill farther north. It's been a few years, and only today did I make the trek up there to try the food. The restaurant is smaller in size and so the buffet is smaller as a result--not a problem though! I tried a good variety of food there, from the tandoori chicken, butter chicken, and some goat curry to the vegetable dishes. The vegetable dishes had just the hint of 'heat' to it, meaning I could taste the spices more than a burn. good! the way it should be. The tandoori chicken had a little heat as well, the same delicate addition. The rice had a nice flavor as well. but the goat curry, which is goat meat on bone...whooever cuts it up does it well. Too often, getting goat curry is a game of trying to NOT get a piece that's mostly bone or gristle. here, I could scoop it up and not worry, there was enough meat on each section to where I didn't feel cheated. The chai wasn't spiced, but it wasn't mere tea either. Some places spice it up, etc., and i like that. But this was just fine the way it was. Anyhow, I went to pay and they rang me up for only 1 buffet plus the drinks. (I brought my young son but he only had a little on his plate.) The buffet price was really reasonable. The hostess was also very gracious and soothing. I came from Silver Spring all the way up there to sample the food and it was well worth the drive. One other note: the owner was around, he didn't recognize me which was great because I could savor the food and decide for myself if he and the cooks kept up the same level of quality I had been used to when he had a restaurant in Rockville. I went up to the counter and the owner came out and asked "for here or to go". I hesitated and he proceeded to encourage me that he had the best buffet and to give it a try, so I did. He told me all about the curry chicken and fresh cut veggies. I made a big plate. My favorites were the butter chicken, the curry chicken and, of course, the veggies. They really were fantastic! The heat level was not overwhelming, as others have stated, but I enjoy spicy food, so that is probably why. I appreciated the fact that the cubes of lamb were not over cooked and were boneless. The addition of potatoes added to the hearty feeling on a cold night. The salad was a salad, definitely could be used to cool your palette if the dish is too spicy. The biriyani rice was cooked properly and paired well with the saucy dish. Between the naan and rice, the only thing wished more of was more sauce, carbs be damned!
