I recently placed an order for two gyros, one plain fries, and one feta fries. The total came to almost $50, which felt extremely high, so I expected the food quality to reflect the price. Unfortunately, I was very disappointed. The gyros were filled mostly with fries rather than fresh vegetables and lamb. I've never seen fries added inside a gyro before, and it took away from the overall taste and value. It felt like the ingredients I expected--and paid for--were missing. read more

We ordered take out from here several times. The food arrived quickly and was deliciously prepared. I forgot to take pictures several times as we just dug in. The tzatziki sauce and dessert were my absolute favorite. read more

I've come here to dine in, takeout, and ubereats'd countless times now. The food is always amazing and most importantly, they stay consistent with what they do. Their service is as good as their food is and whether I walk into the store or get my food delivered, they make it known that they care about making my experience great. I always appreciate the kind hand written notes on my uber eats deliveries when Im having a long day. Also, if you dont typically like salads like myself, the Sparta Salad will make you think otherwise. So good and Ive yet to find any other place that makes a salad taste as good as this. read more

So excited that we just added a new place to our takeout rotation! We just ordered 2 gyro pitas (one with sweet potato fries, one with onion rings). So delicious but we were sold before we even opened the bag. The care taken into drawing on the bag and the sweet message showed us we were about to be wowed. Greece - beautiful, land of love with every Greek I have met in 26 years oozing with natural Se agapo. They spoil you, they feed you, then feed you again.... and again. Just got back from Greece last week. Flying out of Teterboro. That same Greek love from Athens and Fira( Santorini) followed me to Sparta Taverna( 6 minute drive from the airport) here in Jersey 4250 miles east where the owner Erica did the very same and then some. She is an Energizer Bunny full of love, passion, kindness, giving, fun and this naturally seeps over to her amazing cooking, her employees and her lucky customers. I will let my three photos speak for themselves ( yup, 3000 words). The Falafel - best I've ever had( and I have been to Turkey, Lebanon, Morocco, France and Greece in 2021-22 & eaten them there).Fresh, hot and plentiful. The hummus - I was served the red pepper - not enough words. The pita bread - hot, yummy. The tzatziki- this can make or break the meal depending- has to be just right to complement the drier accompaniments. Perfect! The Greek salad - close your eyes and you are transported. I asked for a little more dressing. She gave me a huge serving and told me to ask for more if I needed some. The lovely message hand written on my to go bag ( photo). Sweet! The ambiance - beautiful, warm, makes you want to stay and call everyone you know to get over ASAP. That is what I am doing now. Get to Sparta at 202, Hackensack St in Wood Ridge NJ . You will love every bite, every single sip, every moment, every conversation with Erica. They cater. They do take out. Open daily 11-9. They pamper you in house. Erica you absolutely provided the best, the most authentic Greek experience outside of Greece. read more

I just ordered take-out from here for the first time in a long time. Not only was the food amazing (and my gyro was about the size of a chihuahua), but the order arrived with an absolutely adorable picture drawn on the bag. That might seem like a silly thing to call out, but after the day I just had, a good meal and a smile were exactly what I needed. I have other places for Greek and Mediterranean closer to home, but I'm going to be ordering from here more often. read more

The restaurant makes delicious food! My wife and I had a few of their salads with roasted potatoes that we couldn't stop eating. The two show stoppers however were the lemon chicken and rice, and the dessert we ordered! I can't remember its name, but I think it may have disappeared while I had my back turned! My wife was ready to order the same meal the next day so it was delicious! Thank you for the great meal! read more

Stopped by for some Mediterranean food and they really exceeded my expectations! To start, they provided some complimentary pita and hummus which were very much appreciated. The pita was so fresh and soft. The Pork Souvlaki Platter with Greek Fries were a hit. Both the pork and the fries were seasoned well and hit the spot. The Braised Lamb Shank over rice was extremely tender and flavorful. This was definitely a hearty dish. To top it off, the staff were so kind and wonderful! We will definitely visit again if we are in the area. read more

Ordering takeout during covid-19. Fun time, Sparta makes things easy. Available on grubhub, great timing and delicious food. My boyfriend and I ordered a trio of dips, the tzaziki, hummus and skordalia. I think I like the tzaziki the best. The skordalia tasted a little off to me but everything else was great. Nice presentation as well. We also tried out one shrimp skewer and it was delicious, super tasty and flame grilled. For entrees we got the chicken platter with their delicious rice and a side salad. The salad was hefty and filled with veggies. The rice was perfectly dry and seasoned. Wish I could make this at home. The chicken was flavorful and paired perfectly with their chipotle mayo. Soooo good! I highly recommend it. Also ordered a lamb gyro with extra gyro meat for $2. Worth it. Super tasty, the fresh pita is beyond. Warm and tasty. We also got some olives and for $3 they're delicious and go with the meal really well. I made a last minute decision to get French fries with the gyro and I'm so glad I did. Perfectly seasoned and crunchy. Yumm. Of course some baklava for dessert. It's essential. Stay safe everyone, stay full. read more

My clients wanted Greek food so picked this spot. I called in my order to a really sweet lady. She was very kind and called me by name when she seen my name on the caller id. I ordered different items and picked the shrimp souvlaki pita for myself. When I arrived I parked on the street nearby. I walked in and the lady knew who I was. She went to pack the food and came back and I paid. It came to about $65. When I got in I ate and the pita was very good. The shrimp was seasoned so well. I will definitely return and had a really good experience. read more

Overcharge for things they don't deliver. and dont' respond to messages when you reach out instead of blasting them

This place is small but the food is excellent. The service is primo. Bring your best wine etc. lunch or dinner is a treat reasonably priced.

I hate leaving these type of reviews because I genuinely had high hopes for this place since everyone on yelp was hyping it up. I'm just not sure how you can claim you're Greek when the gyro meat is frozen slabs that you probably just microwaved. The Greek salad had this funky smell to it as well as my husbands Chicken Souvlaki pita, which was minced up chicken. We think the lettuce and the tomatoes went bad which is where the fowl odor came from. If you're looking for good Greek food, stick to Sofia's on the boulevard in Hasbrouck Heights. I wanted to give this place a try and support other businesses but it's difficult doing that when the product is mostly frozen and just reheated. I would love to help the owner out any way I can, I know how bad reviews can affect businesses. read more

My girlfriend and I were in the area and were looking for a place to go for lunch. We were driving past Sparta and saw they had great reviews, so we stopped in. What a great experience we had! The food was great and so filling. I got the lamb shank and my girlfriend got the pork souvlaki platter. The meats were tender and had so much flavor. Our waitress was also incredibly friendly as soon as we stepped in. Would highly recommend this place if you are close by! read more

Passed by this establishment many times located off of Hackensack Street in Wood-Ridge serving Greek cuisine. Reservation was made a day earlier with Ian for tonight's dinner. Upon arrival, the vibe at Sparta Taverna was spot on with pictures of Greece and Greek music playing throughout. My partner, our friends and I were greeted by Shanna ever so friendly and attentive. Complimentary red pepper hummus with mini pita bread wedges began our meal. For appetizers, we got Dolmadakia (Vegetarian grape leaves stuffed with rice) and Mozzarella sticks. The apps were top notch and our stomachs loved us for it. For entrees, we ordered the Sparta Gyro Pita (Gyro meat, fries inside the pita, red onions, tomato, chipotle sauce & tzatziki), Gyro Pita (Lettuce, tomato, red onions, gyro meat & tzatziki), Supreme Salad with chicken (Romaine lettuce hearts, red onions, corn, avocado, red peppers, feta cheese & roasted fried potatoes. All tossed together in their Greek dressing) and Pork Souvlaki Platter accompanied with a Greek salad and roasted potatoes. Most important, the food was amazing and authentic Greek. Everything we tasted melted in our mouths as it was cooked to perfection. One of the best gyro pita sandwiches ever eaten whose tzatziki sauce was thick with a great balance of flavor. The service was unmatched, the price reasonable and it's BYOB. Do yourself a favor and visit this hidden gem that deserves its respect and recognition which we can recommend it. read more

It's the little things that makes this place special...not to mention the bangin food. I've ordered delivery multiple times it's been fantastic. The drivers are so nice and they draw cute things on the bags that just make my whole day. Not to mention the mouth watering tzatziki and pita bread! I usually get the same thing over and over but tonight I ordered two different things (George's combo salad and the Sparta gyro wrap). Delicious and would def order these again. read more

I promise this review will not contain anything corny like, "This is Sparta... Taverna!" - King Leonidas (for any fans of '300' out there) and definitely no mentions of my own vacation to Greece back in 2015 (who likes a horn tooter, right?!). Instead it's just one Yelp'er to another when I say - this place is knocking out some seriously savory Greek fare. Ordered on-line, ready at the time they said, the ladies behind the counter were friendly and I was back home with the family as we did our best to dig into some pretty big portions. This was the first time I ever encountered falafel being treated like steak and you're asked how cooked you want them (we went with 'well done' which was too much, we found out). It was also the first time I had thin strips of lettuce laced throughout my (seasoned) rice.  Strange - but I dug it. The Mrs. is cuckoo for feta - so she was over the moon with their salad, the kids both really enjoyed their chicken. Good sauces (to accompany the different dishes) as well. Everyone was happy and stuffed (with leftovers for the next day) at about $15 a person. read more

3.5 stars. This was my second time eating from here, the first time was at the restaurant and now through delivery. I didn't realize it was the same place until after I ordered, our experience there was subpar the first time. The food was delivered on time and the order was correct however they could have taken a little more care with some items. I got a trio of dips which they put in the same tray, not divided by anything and it look like a mess by the time it arrive to my house. Again the food was good, not great. read more

not sure why all the love tbh though I've eaten at a lot of greek restaurants... (1) 3.5/5 gyro pita - this was the highlight of the meal (2) 2.5/5 Chicken Souvlaki Pita - mediocre, didn't seem like typical souvlaki chicken (3) 3/5 greek salad - pretty ordinary (4) 1/5 spinach pie - my wife spit hers out and I ate a little and threw out the rest, the 2nd worst spinach pie I've ever had before (the worst being the one at Efi's Gyro in montclair which I feared would make me ill after taking a bite despite spitting it out and washing my mouth out...) Rounded up to 3 as they made a nice drawing on the delivery bag read more

Located in an area in the next town over where businesses have come and gone (especially lately) with great frequency, I'm SO glad that this little gem seems to be surviving (and thriving). Sparta Taverna serves authentic, fresh and delicious Mediterranean food with excellent customer service and attention to detail (whether you're eating in or ordering to-go)! Between those two options, our family is proud to support this business with regularity. And we have never been disappointed. Whatever we've ordered from their menu has been prepared spot-on and with an enthusiastic smile (whether in-person or written on a bag for takeout). If "going the extra mile" is what good customer service is all about (and it IS), this place goes 2 or 3 extra miles. It's difficult to single out the stars of their menu because we've tried many things... But the gyro, gyro fries and lamb shank are pretty damn awesome. And connoisseurs of good hummus all know that there is NO store-bought hummus that can compare to getting it fresh. ST's hummus is as fresh and delicious as it gets. The dining room is not that big, but there is almost always a table or two available... And that is, in large part, due to the aforementioned area this restaurant sits in; as the perception of finding convenient parking is that it's more difficult than it actually is. But, sitting there to enjoy a meal is a guarantee... And at peak times, seeing the bustling take-out and delivery orders being prepared makes it evident how popular they are becoming. THAT, because (again) they DESERVE it, warms the heart (just like their food and service)! read more

I've been to the ridgefield park location so when I saw that they opened up another spot, i was super happy to try it. Its just as great!! Street parking- you can park on the side street by ritas and just walk over. Staff was very kind and friendly. I ordered the salad (supreme- I believe) the one with the potatoes in it. I had it with shrimp. It's amazing. I think I could eat that every day of my life and be happy. They start the table off with a platter of hummus and pita which is always appreciated. So this was my first time ever coming in. My mom and I decided to grab gyros. Let me start by saying Erica is such a sweetheart who is the front of the house. They had a house appetizer which was roasted red pepper hummus. It was so good I ordered some to go! The pita was so fluffy and slightly toasted. Thr tzaiziki sauce was flavorful and the perfect consistency. We also got rice pilaf which was enormous and equally delicious. We are very thankful to find such an amazing establishment. I ordered a take out Greek Salad with chicken recently and while it was quite tasty from a flavor standpoint, I couldn't justify spending almost $20 on such a measly portion. Only one grape leaf and the aluminum container was barely full. I've received much heftier and filling portions from other Greek restaurants that put this to shame. For the price and portion size, most definitely not worth it (at least, for just this salad). read more
