I just finished one of there awesome guitar building classes. This is something I've always wanted to do and now I have done it. This is one of most detailed experiences in my life. I started with two blocks of wood, one for the neck and one for the body Plus the fret board. You do everything from start to finish cutting carving , sanding , wiring, everything! With Mason and Matts close eyes on you while you build your own custom guitar. I have been taking my guitars there for a while now and Mason mentioned this class to me, I couldn't have been more happy, Theses guys are the real deal, no kidding they know there craft, I could go on forever but I just wanted to tell you about this class. TLDR: Spampinato guitars is the best luthier and guitar retailer I have ever worked with, 10/10 - if you don't bring your guitar/bass here for work you're making a mistake. ---- I've been a regular customer of Mason, Matt and Charlie for 2 years. I run a small studio near city park that has 8 guitars that need maintenance, they've worked on all of them. I've always had an interest in guitar building and maintenance - so I've worked with and learned from many luthiers over the years. There is a difficult balance in experience and skillset where you need someone who 1) understands the dynamics and malleability of wood on a deep level 2) understands the tertiary skills needed for guitar maintenance (finishing, fretboard inlays, soldering/electronics, etc.) and 3) *actually plays the instrument at an almost professional level so they understand the balance of playability and tone, especially in relation to different techniques for playing bass or guitar - like slide, slap bass, etc. All three professionals at Spampinato hit that balance perfectly. *Their set ups are so fucking good, I've had professional musicians with custom basses pick up my cheap Squire JP and say they want to buy it because it "plays amazingly"*. In reality, it's just properly set up. I've recently enrolled in their guitar building workshop and seen firsthand how Matt and Mason approach guitar building and maintenance. It's clear that they've researched common techniques and, when they deviate, have clear reasoning and are trying to always provide the best outcome for the customer. They are also patient and have had no hesitation answering my litany of questions. I've referred over half a dozen other musicians to their shop and each one has had a phenomenal experience. Matt just did a complete rebuild of my 40 year old Epiphone 12 string, taking it from a bowed neck mess to being one of the sweetest playing acoustics I own, it is amazing! I thought it was hopeless and beyond even being made into a somewhat playable guitar, maybe if I was lucky, the first 5 frets might be possible. But he turned this lovely guitar into an instrument that plays like and sounds like a dream. Shades of Roger McGuinn, it sounds so great now! That makes 3 guitars of mine he's salvaged and/or fine tuned in the last few months, and I have a couple more projects for him in mind. So worth the very reasonable cost. Highly recommend. read more

I hate to write this because the owner is my former teacher, and he's a nice guy, but I do not believe this shop is competent or honest. First off, they're more expensive than any shop I've ever used. Second, I took a guitar to them several months ago. They told me I would need a neck reset, and it would cost $600. I got a second opinion. The guitar did NOT need a neck reset, and I got it repaired for less than half off what I was quoted at a different shop. I had the guitar repaired elsewhere, and it plays just fine now without a neck reset. Third, they installed an LR Baggs pickup system in my flamenco guitar. They were the ones who recommended it. It is a very bad system with a terrible design flaw that makes it hard to adjust between mic and transducer level. Now I'm out several hundred dollars, and I'm going to have to replace this useless pickup. Nice guys, but a bad business is a bad business. read more

I made an appointment with these guys. My grandfather willed me a 1950 D-18. A few braces were loose and the neck was reset by Mason. He not only fixed my family heirloom but my most sentimental Martin given to me which was played by my grandpa for years will play better than my others for another 50 years. Dropped off 2 guitars in need of re-stringing and setup,one of which was my 63 Silvertone Jupiter in mint condition. Mason advised me they would be ready for pickup in one week and as promised they were ready and waiting. Mason sat with me and explained in detail what he had done as far as setup was concerned. After a few minutes of noodling around both guitars playability was noticeably improved. The day I pickup up my guitars Matt was performing a considerable tune up on a 57? Gibson acoustic guitar. He allowed me to step into the back area where the builds and repairs take place and enlightened me concerning the repairs he found necessary. I recently relocated after many years in NYC and was concerned that I may have some difficulty finding a shop that would work along with me in the care and maintenance of my guitars.
