I'm really happy with the outcome of the work Colfax Guitar Shop provided for me. They fully required my '96 Paul Reed Smith Core Standard 22 back to the original specifications. The guitar sounds and plays fantastic now. I'll definitely be using them for future maintenance and repairs. The staff is super helpful and friendly as well. A+ service and fair prices. read more

To call the "luthier" at this shop incompetent would be insulting to the incompetent. I brought in a $3000+ acoustic guitar for a very minor repair and they destroyed it (and insisted I pay them for their damage). You could train a chimp to setup an electric guitar, but if you have an acoustic you love DO NOT bring it to this shop. read more

I have used them to setup all my guitars and basses. Extremely knowledgeable, reasonably price great people to do business with.

I have had multiple guitars setup, repaired and had guitar builds completed by Colfax Guitar. They do quality work, and pricing is reasonable. If you need any work done on an electric, acoustic, or bass, I would highly recommend this shop. I have relocated to PNW and have taken my instruments to them, when I visited, but will have to find repair shop now close to home. David M read more

I've owned 100s of guitars over the years. New ones, vintage ones...and everything in between. Most have been serviced either in San Fran by Gary Brauer ( an amazing luthier and good friend), Performance Guitars in La La Land, or in Nashville....blah blah blah. Walking into Colfax Guitar I got a really amazing vibe. I dealt with Christopher and he was patient and extremely knowledgeable of Guitar setup etc. He does not oversell and aims to please. My geetah will not be back for three weeks but I have a funny premonition that its gonna be great. Will let you know. read more

I cannot say enough good things about Colfax Guitar shop. They have an amazing level of ability and knowledge in setting up and repairing guitars. I've had them professionally tune up 3 electrics now and am always extremely impressed at how well my guitars play after Colfax Guitar Shop has done a set up on them. read more

Awesome place, Christian is amazing, he hooked us up on tour with a really quick last minute repair to our Rickenbacker with a really patient and kind attitude. Fantastic service, smart people. Cant recommend enough. read more

They completely transformed my $5,000 Les Paul R8!!! New ownership, same fantastic work/service! I have a small collection of VERY nice guitars. My R8 is now my favorite...this from a guy who didn't even like Les Paul guitars very much in the first place. Last year, I bought a 50th anniversary Tom Murphy R8 that had already been re-fretted. The frets were too high for my taste. Since they weren't original, I didn't mind changing them out. Boy am I glad I did! I brought it home late last night (they stayed open late for me YMMV) and went to bed without playing it. First thing this morning I plugged it in and oh my lord! This thing nearly plays itself! I am so impressed. Christian - one of the new owners who also makes his own guitars - planed the fretboard, hand shaped a new bone nut, and set this thing up perfectly. I am beside myself at how much better this thing plays. In addition, a couple years ago, I brought them a rare Fender Strat (1 of 125) that has a gorgeous red quilted top that puts most PRS's to shame. There was a 1/2" or so circular gouge in the top that went all the way to the bare wood. It looked like a super model who was missing her front teeth. I left it with these guys for a week or so and when I got it back, I couldn't stop smiling. If I didn't know exactly where to look and what to look for, I would have NEVER known it had been damaged. As you can imagine it is NOT easy to make a repair like that blend in to a top that shows the natural grain of the wood but these guys did it. Thanks Christian! Mark Lavanish. read more

I brought a Takamine 12 string in that needed a new nut and some fretwork. 275 Dollars later, I was told that the neck angle was incorrectly set at the factory. The guitar was still barely playable after spending 2 weeks in their humidifier and further time in my high humidity room. Although I was assured that the guitar was repairable when I brought it in, I just wished the experts had checked the neck angle before they worked on it, because it's still not playable. I suggest that you know exactly what's wrong with your guitar before you have CGS do any work. I didn't and now I have a beautiful expensive wall decoration. read more

These guys JUST HOOKED IT UP!! Last minute emergency with my G&L ASAT and mike whipped it back in shape in the EPITOME of a Jiffy. Amazing prices and super cool cats. Thanks Nick upfront as well!! P.S. Sorry if I botched names! I'm a bit lit over my fresh guitar for tonight at Bluebird! Thanks again guys!! read more

Christian has done some absolutely amazing work for me for years. I snapped the head stock off of my Les Paul R9 and he repaired it so that you can't even tell it was ever broken. Excellent work for over 10 years on all of my rare and expensive guitars! These guys are the best! read more

I had my guitar set up and they did a beautiful job. It's like new! Nice people, honest rates. Highly recommend.

Moved to town and started bringing my guitars by for set ups shortly after on a recommendation from a friend. They do a fantastic job and are extremely knowledgeable. They also have some cool vintage instruments for sale if you're ever in the market. Check it out. read more

Colfax Guitar Shop - Just picked up my Gibson ES-335 from service...hasn't played or sounded this good in years. - Guitar Stores Near Me - Denver, Colorado

Back when we left our hometown of Lawrence, KS for Denver I was concerned about finding a guitar repair spot that did quality work as reputable as that of Mass St Music. It turns out that I had nothing to fear, because almost every guitarist I talked to highly recommended Colfax Guitar Shop. I tend to play temperamental electrics that have their share of 'vintage quirks' and they occasionally require repairs or adjustments that are above my pay grade. For the past several years the fine folks at Colfax Guitar Shop have provided nothing but consistently excellent service, always performing work that rises above and beyond my expectations. I wouldn't take my guitars anywhere else. read more

Friendly, knowledgeable folks. I'm female and in my 60's. All the guys have been nice and professional...no man-splaining or condescension EVER. If you're a female musician, you know it's rare to receive that kind of respect in a guitar shop. They do great work and obviously love what they do. I've been charged more for guitar setups other places and with less attention to detail. I won't trust my instruments with anyone else now that I found these guys! read more

Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. They setup my guitar in no time at all. I came in some time later when my strings started to buzz after the initial setup and they fixed it on the spot. Highly recommend these guys. read more

New owners are great and a lot friendlier than the previous owner. I dreaded bringing my guitar in to the shop with the previous group, even though they did good work. The new folks do phenomenal work. If you've had a bad experience in the past, try them again. I brought in a guitar that always had setup problems. This is the 1st shop to get the setup right the 1st time. Highly recommended! read more

Look: ya get what you pay for. I'm not saying Wildwood's or Woodsong's don't do perfectly OK work, but if you're in a hurry to get it back, forget those places. And Baxendale GUARANTEES his set-up FOR A WHOLE YEAR. That means if the axe tweaks a little bit over the course of a year, which is inevitable in Colorado's dry climate, you take it back to Scott and he adjusts it FREE OF CHARGE, while you're standing there. I've got 3 guitars I take in to Guitar Shop every year, and the $270 I pay for the set-up(s) is worth every penny. read more

These guys are great. I brought in my kid's Les Paul jr for a setup and they did such a nice job. It's proper and fluid. Neck is quick and it keeps in Tune better than when it was new. Seems to me that if you're playing a nice guitar, it's well worth it to give it a great setup for $80. Especially up here in CO. High quality work. read more

I have used the shop a couple of times. I dropped my guitar yesterday to be restrung I was able to pick it up today, Dave did some additional work to the neck because to our dry climate. Good to work with, a pleasure. read more

Reasonable prices, quick turnaround, and great work on both acoustic and electric guitars. I have taken in both my American Strat for the pro set up, and a Takamine acoustic electric that needed a new plug jack. Both jobs were done in a very timely manner at a good price. I trust these guys to do a great job with whatever I may need on my instruments. They also spent a few minutes talking to me to understand how I would like the guitar set up. Not everyone likes to play with ridiculously low action, etc. I recommend them for any guitar set up or repair work. read more

There are a number of great repair shops in town, but only Colfax Guitar Shop offers everything I look for in a guitar shop. It's blue-collar (that's a top-shelf compliment). There is zero ego in the whole store. All four of the guys there take their job as consummate professionals. The work they turn out is without a doubt on the highest echelon, alongside any of the best repair shops in the country. I say this as someone who sells vintage flattops to put dinner on the table. Guitars are my job. I have been in, or sold to, just about every big name shop in the country. My guitars are always ready to play, and it's always because of the impeccable work that Dave, Christian, Mike, and Nils have put into my guitars. You can bring in an 1860's German parlor guitar, to a Larson Brothers Jumbo, to your Pre-CBS anything, to your Hello Kitty guitar. It doesn't matter. These guys will approach any guitar with the same professionalism. You never have to worry about them giving your guitar back to you and leaving you unhappy with the work. This is a REAL guitar shop, done by REAL repairmen (or luthiers, if you prefer the term.) Plus, they all love to talk about the history of the guitar, which is an endless quest that those who venture it love to find in others doing the same. In closing, let me just say that you can rest assured that all four guys working here are down to earth, unassuming dudes. They love their work, and they fix everything the right way. Their customer service is top-notch. This is a store full of honest, good people. I've never had a guitar that was worked on at Colfax that the customer I went on to sell it to didn't love. And they've worked on a TON of my guitars. It's hands-down my favorite guitar shop in the country, because they've never let me down. This review is long overdue, but whatever. It's more relevant to you that I wrote it today, rather than years ago. So grab your '62 Les Paul Custom that your deadbeat son stole the middle PAF out of years ago before absconding to Phuket with your second wife Sheila, and while you're at it throw your granddaughter's Hello Kitty Purring V with the broken coil tap toggle -- throw all that in the trunk of whatever you drive, and take it to Colfax. There is no guitar too nice or too damaged that they won't fix perfectly, and there's no guitar so humble or low-priced that they'd thumb their nose at. That's as high of a compliment I can pay a shop. They're my Number 1. Unfortunately, if you've made it this far through my review, Colfax has now closed for the day. All apologies. They open at 10. read more

Look Scott the owner is nice and all, but I took a guitar in to get setup (truss rod adjusted, intonation set, cleaned up) and he was going to charge me $90 plus an additional $7 for guitar stings. Called up a few other places including Wildwood Guitars and Woodsong's Lutherie and got prices for the same service in the $55-$70 range, pricing included strings. Basically would have paid $30 -$45 more for the same service at Colfax Guitars. I definitely felt taken advantage of. Probably won't go here again. read more

I have taken several guitars to this shop. The work has been excellent, the product of craftsmen that know their stuff. In particular, I had a bigsby added to a Samick RL-123 that required repositioning of the bridge which included filling in the previous location holes. The refinish work was superb. The pricing is very fair. Forget chain store service departments. These guys are pros. read more

I like this shop. I had them set up my new Mexican Strat, and do a fret job on my Les Paul. They ask questions about what and how you play so they can adjust it just right for your style. I wasn't even sure if my Les Paul frets could be saved, but it feels/ plays better than it has in years. For the strat setup he took the time to file the fret ends so it feels nice and smooth and included that in the price. I think they have good fair pricing and i was nicely satisfied with their work. read more

I've had my guitars worked on and repaired at nearly every shop in Denver, as well as many in Boston and NYC. The work that Dave and Christian do at Colfax guitars is on par with the best. They are honest and transparent in their assessments and estimates, and thorough, accurate, and detail oriented in their repairs and setups. They are always willing to tweak anything that they have worked on to get it just how I like it. They have caught a lot of subpar work done by previous shops. Their standard is very high. Plus, they are always down to talk shop. Well done, guys! read more

I am not sure who these people are talking about. I have been taking my guitars to Colfax for years. I don't know who 'Scott' is. I thought Dave owned the business. I have taken an Epiphone, Larrivee (and my girlfriend's Larrivee), Ibanez Bass, Fender American Standard, Fender Cyclone, and had a myriad of work done. I have had one problem with the Ibanez not being grounded properly. I talked to Dave he said bring it in and he would fix it. No grief. No crap. No tension. Bring it in and it will get taken care of. For instance the Ibanez was totally reworked. They put in three pick-ups; new 250k pots; new bone nut; and a Babicz bridge. Except for the grounding, the work has been flawless. The intonation and action are perfect. I have had every type of work done except major reconstruction (that being said I have seen two major reconstructions they have done and the work was incredible). Bone nuts fashioned (Both Larrivee's and the Ibanez ). Set-ups (multiple instruments). Major electrical work (Ibanez and Cyclone). Bridge reseated (Epiphone FT-570). Tuners replaced (Cyclone). This being said I really am wondering if the people who gave Colfax Guitar Shop actually went there. Dave is a great small business owner. He does more than fix guitars; he creates community in his shop. read more

I've been using this shop since I moved from Nashville. They've repaired a crack on an acoustic for me, set up my electric, and most recently, did a heavy mod on my 61 Silvertone U1 adding a tele bridge and pickup. All of their work has been awesome and I highly recommend. read more
