Went in to the Denver (Colorado Blvd) store to check out vdrum kits, as I am updating my Roland TD-11kv to the TD-25 series. Not exactly a small purchase at $2k.
They also had a floor demo of the TD-50. I about puked a brick when I saw that the headphone knob was busted off and the machine was not putting out any sound.
I've got a couple grand burning a hole in my pocket and also wanted to check out the new Pioneer HDJ-x10s. Solid headphones. Too bad the "volume down" button on the Pioneer demo station was broken. Wanna crank those suckers up and dang near rattle your teeth out? Go for it. Wanna turn it down to check its lows and see how it operates a few decibels deep? Not gonna happen. If you're trying to sell $350 headphones, at least fix your stuff so people can test it properly (*cough* $6k vdrums). Not a huge deal; these are bad-fanny headphones and I was impressed enough that I was going to purchase them. Off to the cable section.
This is when I encounter Bad Bro. This guy working there was the epitome of a bad-fanny rockstar, lemme tell ya. So cool he's he's cold typa thing.
I needed to pick up a few adapters for my current setup and wandered around the cables section like a lost child trying to navigate the grocery store after losing my parents. Okay, not that bad, but I couldn't find the TRS adapters so I go ask Bad Bro where they were. Surely he just must not have seen me wandering around aimlessly and wasn't able to ask me if I would like to be endowed with his infinite knowledge of where anything was in the store he worked at.
Well, that was a mistake. How DARE I bother rockstar homeboy at HIS PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT to ask where something is. I mean, this guy's so rockstar that he's working at a massive corporate retail store for eleven bucks an hour ("but the band is gonna make it") and doesn't have time for regular ol' folk like me, boy howdy. Dude just acted like he was bothered by me asking where those were and was too stuck up to just be respectful and courteous--you know, how you should be when you work with the public (been there, done that; now self-employed, crushing it, and it's time to upgrade my setup).
The entire half hour I was in there, nobody working there acknowledged I was there or asked if I needed any expert info on anything I was looking at. That's okay. I'm a big boy and I know what I'm doing. The dude I first encountered was also "gonna make it bigtime; just need to find the right bassist" cool and didn't even greet me or anything walking in. Whatever, Cobainito. It's just manners and decency. Come on, this is 2018. You can read up on those ancient concepts in history books if you look deep enough.
So now I get to the counter to check out with my adapter and would ask them to unlock the lock on the headphones. Cobain goes back to help the guy who was in front of me find just the right guitar. It's cool. A man needs the right axe. Polite Guy (thank goodness there was at least one) gets a phone call and heads off, leaving only Bad Bro up front and one Lessons Guy by the lessons section. Bad Bro obviously has far better things to chit-chat about with Lessons Guy and just watches me stand at the check-out counter for a good five minutes. In-Front-Of-Me-In-Line Guy is still trying to find the right axe and by now I find myself banging on a few djembes they've got by the check-out to pass the time.
After enough time's passed to get me a good beard started, I decide I've had enough. I tossed the TRS on the counter and skedaddled. Not gonna sit there and wait for Mr. Bad Bro to realize he actually does work there, ring me up, and send me off with my headphones and adapter. I had a few questions about the Rolands that I needed to clear up before getting them, but would have bought those on the spot as well if I was able to confirm that they were able to do what I needed them to. It's okay. They will be in The Lab after the holiday weekend. Just not from here, unfortunately.
The cherry on top of this whole thing was the glare Bad Bro shot my way on the way out. Yeah, you're real cool. Workin' at Guitar Center. I bet you do a mean Stairway to Heaven and have to fight chicks off with a stick. Later bruh.
Humility is a virtue far more valuable than status. Read that again if you need to.
Overall, not sure what the deal was here. Most Guitar Centers I've been to have their dookie together enough to at least acknowledge people and see if they need anything and have working demos. I give it two stars just for Polite Guy who answered the phone and because I was able to make a firm decision on the x10s, but I'll just have to test out the hush capabilities somewhere else, assuming I still have all my teeth. *counts teeth with tongue...twice...*
Yep. All there.
Peace.
