I brought in a 1971 Martin 000-18 to have a new pick guard put on and the bridge glued. They cut a new pick guard and glued it on. It looks kind of amateurish done and has sharp edges. You can also see where the old pick guard was and when you lay the old pickguard on top of the new they are not the same size. First time I've here and I came because of all of the reviews. I need to have tuners replaced, but now I will also have the new pick guard replaced too. I won't have them do it. It cost $410. read more

Wow - what a cool shop. Popped in for 30 minutes. Spoke with Andrew about a repair, played a couple of their in-house builds, and got a quick tour of the shop. I could play whatever they had, but after playing two acoustics that Heath had built, I had zero urge to play anything else. The playability of those two acoustics was insane. Additionally, there was no "shop pressure" about playing them. I've never had such an awesome experience in a guitar shop. Thank you, Andrew & Victor Guitar. Will be back. A few years ago I had Victor Guitar install passive pick-ups in my '76 S.L. Mossman and my Larrive'e SD-60. I was impressed with their shop, and the skills of their luthiers. Enough so that I just brought my newly-acquired John Westling (1990s?) Harp Guitar for a major modification. The original bass neck was too close to the guitar neck at the top fret. Ed and Andrew rebuilt the side of the bass neck changing the curvature to increase the space near the top of the neck. I would not have trusted this work to anyone else. They did an outstanding job, and re-strung the bass strings with upgraded strings. I am very happy with the outcome. I highly recommend Victor Guitar for any luthier work, on any instrument. I just picked up my Martin that was in my option in really bad shape. Part of the finish on the back was gone and the frets had been worn down with groves. My guitar was done in less than 10 days with the back restored to original and new frets with new strings and lowered action! I was very pleased !! read more

Just returned home from picking up my old Tokai telecaster. This guitar is a sentimental piece from my dad and has extra meaning to me. I've taken my guitars to Ed and the rest of the guys at Victor Guitar for years and they always do an incredible job. This time was by far the best experience. I had just bought a '65 Fender Jazz - not a cheap investment - and was very concerned about what I thought was a warp on one side of the neck which could've required major work to make it playable. But Victor Guitar came to the rescue once again, only doing a set up to solve the problem. Last week, this bass was not very playable. This week, it plays like a dream. This is happiness and satisfaction that you can't put a price on. Look, if you have a $500 bass or guitar or something else that needs a little setup, it might - might make sense to take it to a place that'll set it up for $50. I'd still take it to these guys because they get their work done in a timely fashion and it's done right the first time. But if you have a boutique or vintage or over $1,000 instrument, don't skimp on getting work done. You want your instruments playable long term, not done on the cheap. You pay a little - not much - extra money to take it here. But it's worth every penny. And aren't your instruments worth it? Wood has memory. And once a guitar is set up right, and set up right again, it will always play well. These guys are simply the best in town, no contest. read more

Being a stringed instrument novice (2 weeks in with my ukulele! Wooohooo)... I find myself feeling slightly intimidated going into music stores. Especially when the help and instruction I need is as elementary as stringing and tuning specifics. The shop's hours are limited, so I emailed to get a quote on replacing the saddles, pots, pickups, tuners, and nut, along with a setup, on a Lotus Strat copy. Edward replied that it was best to bring the guitar in. When I took the guitar in, the service tech told me they didn't have saddles and probably not tuners for the guitar, but they could do the rest, and just clean the electronics. They did a setup on the guitar, but they didn't replace the nut, which I was sure I communicated that I wanted. When I got the guitar home, I noticed a lot of fret buzz. Edward could have saved me much time and frustration by letting me know they didn't do electric guitar upgrades, just setups, in my initial email. Edward previously did a good job repairing a cracked top on my Martin acoustic, but the recent experience was disappointing, and I won't be taking any more guitars there. read more

I was on top of the world after my first "session" with my newborn daughter. If only I had taken as much care to put my Vintage Guild Acoustic securely on the stand as I do my daughter on the changing table, I might have never had a need for Victor Guitar. Nevertheless, a face plant to the hardwoods left me with a broken headstock. I dropped it off at Victor Guitar and they gave me two options: 1. The pro fix involving splines 2. The less invasive fix involving pressure and glue for about 1/2 the cost. Since I don't gig anymore, I went with the second option. Two days later, I picked up my Guild and could hardly tell anything had ever happened. A quick scan revealed the action a bit higher on the bass side of the neck, so Tom happily adjusted the truss rod for no extra charge. I'm happy to note that I've since since enjoyed a second session with my little girl, who was 100% satisfied with dad's performance as Dad is with Victor Guitar.....I think. Great guys. What on earth happened to my guitar jack? It was only out of my hands for 45 minutes! Somehow between checking it on a plane between Park City, Utah and Denver, it had stopped working and at my next gig, couldn't get the 1/4 inch cord to fit! It was a mystery. Then, as I jiggled things around, I found a small eyeglass screwdriver! Obviously someone had been messing around with my guitar and put it away in a hurry. I took it to Victor Guitar-- to the only guy I would ever trust with it-- Edward Dick. He came up with the perfect scenario. I've been a loyal follower of Edward Dick's guitar work both as a builder and repair expert for about 12 years. Once I moved to Denver from Nashville, I had to find the best. He is quick, efficient and knows exactly what to do to get the very best sound out of your treasured axe. Being a touring pro I generally need my instruments in a hurry and Edward always makes it happen. And-- I would absolutely not trust my Taylor (or Martin) with anyone else! Besides, he has some unbelievable stories he's gathered over the years about what he's discovered in various instruments, and... told me he might write even a book about them...!!! Only Edward, his assistant and I know what happened to my guitar jack. I guess you'll have to visit Victor Guitar to find out, or get Edward's book! Sorry that I can't join the chorus of praise for the repair work at Victor Guitar. I've had 4 repair jobs done there. 2 were okay. But the last 1, not so good. When my 1967 Gonzalez classical (Madrid) needed a new saddle, I took it there. When I picked it up, pressed for time, I did not inspect it at the shop. When I got home, I was astounded to discover that the saddle did not make contact with the bottom of the slot. You could actually see under the saddle, all the way through the bridge slot. It had just been jammed in there. Really poor workmanship from someone who should know better. Another example: on my 1965 flamenco by Andres Martin (Madrid), he had done some minor cosmetic repair to the finish. He did a good job matching the color - no easy task - but when you looked at it from the right angle, under the light, you could see finger swirls where he had failed to blend the finish smoothly. Hardly the work of a master craftsman! He did correct it, at my insistence, but only grudgingly and acted as though he was doing me a favor by fixing what he should have done right the first time. And that attitude was the last straw. The shop personnel are pleasant enough, but Victor himself treated me as if I were somehow bothering him. Acerbic and unfriendly, the impression I always got was that he didn't really care for my business. So, he gets his wish: sloppy workmanship and a sour attitude are enough that I now take my guitar repair business elsewhere. read more

I had a spruce top guitar with a nasty center seam separation. I took it to Victor Guitar with uncertain expectations, given the extent of the damage. Edward did a great job repairing the guitar. Not only did it sound great afterwards; the appearance of the spruce top vastly exceeded my expectations. It looked better than I imagined. And though I didn't request it, Edward lowered the action slightly in a way that improved the playability of the instrument. Highly recommended. read more

I am not entirely sure how I never knew this place existed. I play mandolin and thought I knew of most of the shops in the Denver area to go shop for mando's but I found another. I found it because I am a craigslist junkie and I came across a guitar that needed work and I looked up "luthier in Denver" and Victor Guitars popped up. Gave them a call and I knew they closed at 5 and I wasnt going to make it but Edward said he would wait 15 minutes for me to receive the guitar. I delivered this axe that was borderline unplayable and 5 days later it was fixed and playing great. I will be taking all of my instruments here for any work and if I am ever looking to upgrade my mandolin this will be the first stop. Another gem on Broadway. read more

I have recently had work done at Victor on my '67 Martin D-28 (neck re-set), my Loar mandolin (refinish back of neck and setup), and my Robin Rawhide Supreme (set-up).
