I went to see John Fullbright here on Friday, October 8, 2021. The seats were comfortable and the sound system was great. The concertgoers and staff were very respectful, too -- you could hear a pin drop in that auditorium, which I really liked. I made a couple of trips to the bar and the people and drinks were great! Great classes! Ive been taking the adult singing class for 6 months and its been a great value

Great place for those wanting to learn to play an instrument. If your looking for your children or for yourself, they have lessons for everyone. I'm taking a Beginners Guitar class, the pace has been what I expected and only requires about 15 minutes a day practice. The instructor is a Musician (Local Colorado Band) and makes learning easy. There are a couple concert venue rooms in the building (Old Church) and many class rooms. There is also a Cafe where you can get snacks, drinks and adult beverages. The parking is across the street in a private parking lot. I've never had a problem with the lot, and my classes are in the evening. Been wanting to learn music, I definitely recommend you give Swallow Hill a try. read more

I drove out from Kansas City to see one of my favorite bands. I really like the space - an old renovated church being made useful as a concert hall. The acoustics were very good, as even the bands made remarks about how great the sound was. If I lived in Denver, I'm sure I would be a supporter of Swallow Hill because they seem to book the type of artists that I find most appealing and as a supporter, I would have access to the front 3 rows. read more

I had no idea that Swallow Hill held concerts! My only experience with them was a music recital for my niece and nephew several years back. I recently saw a promotion on social media for a band's performance, so I bought tickets. I will most definitely go back to this music venue in the future! My wife and I moved from Northglenn back in 2019 to Englewood. I was excited because Swallow Hill was now close. The attendance was good and there was lots of good musicians. But covid came and we know what followed. I have been back three times since covid restrictions were lifted to the Jazz jams and they all sucked. All three times one or two other people showed up and we played along to backing tracks. I can do that at home. read more

Caught a Joseph show that was sponsored by Swallow Hill at the First Baptist Church on Saturday night. Although the venue was out of the box, the concert was phenomenal and very reasonably priced. The audience felt like a community that was all there for the same purpose - to enjoy great music. I had no issues with folks talking during the show as I have had at other concerts, and the church setting was surprisingly grand. The seats were general admission, which led me there earlier than I typically go to get a good seat up front. The one issue with the venue was that since it was a church, all the seats were on the same level. We were in the third row and managed okay but I assume this would become frustrating as you got further back in the church and had to finagle around other heads in front of you to see the show. Will definitely follow along and see what other shows they have coming up! read more

I can only review Swallow Hill as a music venue. I attended a concert one evening, and the sound was quite good. It's a rather small venue with chairs lined up in an auditorium. If you arrive late, as I did, you can still see the performers well and hear everything with no problem. It seems to be staffed mostly by enthusiastic volunteers who love music. It's also really easy to reach by bus, which is especially nice. read more

Six degrees of separation. Sometimes you don't have to look far, or at all, to find the connection. I found it in Swallow Hill Music Cafe tonight! I've never had any musical ability . . .absolutely none. But I do enjoy music, and music of all types. I grew up in a household of classical music - with an occasional side trip to big bands. If the stars were aligned properly, I should be a classical buff; or even a big band girl, but no! The stars must have been hidden the night I was born because I am partial to the comfortable, warm, deep-in-my-soul sound of bluegrass and folk music.There is something about it that just draws me in. A friend told a friend that another friend was here in Denver for one night to play at the Swallow Hill Cafe. Of course I knew nothing of Swallow Hill Music Association, so I did a little online research. I was so impressed by their line-up of musicians and their emphasis on putting music back into the community that I joined then and there - - online. Sight unseen. Never been to a SH concert. Hadn't yet heard a single musician play in one of their venues. I just knew that I wanted to be part, in some small way, of putting music back into the hearts and souls of my adopted city. So, off we went to hear a friend of a friend of a friend play. Cahalen Morrison and Eli West. I never heard them play before; nor had I ever seen the Swallow Hill Cafe. What a cozy, warm and inviting venue. Two hours later my soul was filled and I was searching the calendar for the next time I can return. How lucky Denver is to have Swallow Hill Music Association. Every city needs such a place to fill its heart and soul with music. Five stars for Swallow Hill Music Association; five stars for Cahalen Morrison and Eli West! read more

Tonight I was honored with the rare opportunity to attend a light dinner and concert honoring major donors to Swallow Hill. The executor of an estate in my family decided to donate money in the name of our relative to Swallow Hill and their noble mission(s) of bringing roots, folk, and traditional music to Denver, offering music lessons for people of all ages, and much much more. I was impressed with the friendliness and genuineness of the people I was introduced to, and loved the band. The food was good too, it seemed to be a catered event. There is a little cafe in the basement that has small concerts and serves food, but it was not open tonight while we were there. We were in the main concert hall. My daughter and I enjoyed the curried chicken with peanut sauce, and some fruity white chocolate chip cookies. Really the music and the friendly people were the high points of the evening. The musicians mingled among the major donors after the concert and a few photographers were taking lots of pictures. Who knows? Maybe our pictures will be in the newsletter or website... I love this place and simply must start spending more time here! read more

I've been a member of this organization for more than ten years. They have good music teachers and good concerts. Unfortunately, their front desk customer service is pretty bad. Mistakes on my lesson purchases are frequently made. Getting the errors corrected is time consuming. Apologies are rarely made. It's too bad but I continue to support them because of the teachers and the concerts. read more

This review is for their concerts only. I've never taken music lessons here. -- I like their venue. It's a converted church and has good acoustics. Two mild criticisms: 1) they have limited parking across the street, so get to the concert early otherwise you'll need to find street parking in the residential neighborhood; 2) seats closer to the stage are reserved for members (i.e., donors) so if you aren't a member, you'll be sitting in the back of the room. That said, I'll be back. They have an interesting, eclectic mix of concert offerings. read more

The scheduling is very accommodating, even when you miss a class they are kind to try and accommodate you for another time slot. This place is amazing. Part school, part concert venue, all wonderful. I've taken guitar lessons and had a great teacher. Seen legends and fillers like Peter Yarrow (Peter, Paul and Mary), the Indigo Girls, John Hiatt, Mary Flower and Mollie O'Brien and Rich Moore. Daniels Hall is one of my favorite venues in Denver -- seats about 250 in a former church. Swallow Hill also programs concerts in a few other venues (including the Botanic Gardens and Four smile Historic Park). Swallow Hill also goes into schools to bring music and music education to students across the area, particularly underserved schools. If you've never visited, check out this treasure. read more

I am putting this place on my list of Denver must see events for visitors. Why? Well first of all it has the largest traditional American music school--instruments, singing, and dancing--between east of the Mississippi and past California. That gives it a cache to bring in world class acts on their concert venue and they claim to do over 200 a year. I'll admit I am not a member and not on the donor list. I go to maybe one concert a year, but with some new found leisure I am going to pick up the pace. It's also going on my family activities list because they have a HUGE calendar of one day and ongoing classes on almost everything, from voice lessons to ukulele sessions on Saturday. But most of all, because I have never been to a concert here that has not been positively professional, fun and reaffirming. For anyone who wants to get a little inspiration for a back to the farm, sustainable, do-it-yourself, green way of life, you can't do better than starting here for the real McCoy. So to speak. I went to the Tannenhill Weavers (Scottish Irish roots to American traditional and Appalachian style country) concert with friends simply because I had a vague recollection that I liked them once upon a time. The place was packed, they have new upholstered chairs more comfortable than any theater in Denver, and the music was miraculously fine. You cannot ignore the musicianship that comes through these doors. Even if it's not your primary taste, it's a talent to be learned from and respected. Want to be inspired by something new? Here you can learn to master the folky instruments under excellent instruction. You can learn music theory to a T. Also, the Hill is constantly presenting upscale concerts and other events. Get ready to rock out in the Rockies and folk out with some folkies. Instructor was rude and demeaned a child on stage. While it is a cool concept (sometimes venue, sometimes school) the school of rock aspect is very interesting, but my child came out of the experience with stories of the instructors yelling at the kids. read more

This review is for the Lowry campus - kids music classes. Our daughter has taken lessons here for several months. The teachers have been great, the classes are small and reasonably priced. We've had a good overall experience but there are a few things worth noting: 1. We've never had the same instructor two sessions in a row. I think my daughter has enjoyed this but some might not like such inconsistency. 2. The classrooms are tiny but the class sizes are small, too, so it's no biggie. 3. The price is really reasonable. 4. It super convenient - right in the Lowry town square. My only gripe is that there are so few classes and sometimes classes are canceled due to enrollment issues. The Lowry campus is new and growing though so I hope this works itself out soon. We're very happy here and my daughter is learning a lot. read more

Great small community based music venue. This is the main location that features workshops and lessons in addition to the concerts and events across the two main rooms. Volunteers work the booth and facility, so it's a different feel than most across downtown. Great spot to see some tunes or catch a book reading or poetry jam if that's your bag. read more

I told myself my whole life I would someday be a great guitar player - after I turned 50, I finally decided to take a beginner's class. Six years later I'm an adequate guitar player, playing in an old time stringband (think O Brother Where Art Thou but not as good...) with banjos, mandolins, fiddles, and happy as a lark. Playing 2 other instruments and singing too. I still take 1 or 2 classes each term. Classes prices are reasonably good, most instructors quite good, and the staff is full of wonderful people. Private lessons usually just fine too, for advanced players and singers. Swallow Hill is a national fixture on the music scene for grass-root folk and Americana music. Concerts feature some amazing performers, and help support musicians who are keeping old American music alive. Swallow Hill has been hired to book for another half-dozen Denver venues because they do a good job of picking performers. My main criticism is one they really want to fix - they have outgrown the old church building and busy nights see classes in some mighty small and unwieldy rooms. The new Lowry extension has small classrooms but also a lot less people take classes there. Five stars - I am there 2 or 3 times a week, and my life would be a lot smaller and tamer without Swallow Hill. read more

This is a folk music lover's haven. I bought my first decent guitar at the Denver Folklore Center, had my first voice lesson at the old Swallow Hill location on Pearl and just saw Rene Heredia perform at the Yale and Lincoln concert venue last night (he's a legend and deserves that status). I'm glad there are still people passionate enough about music and the community to keep Swallow Hill going. With lots of beginner classes available on everything from penny whistle to performing with a band to appalachian dance, there is a broad appeal for anyone wanting to get their musical jones happening. Join in, join up or just enjoy and help keep it going. read more

Amazing concert tonight - very disappointed in the venue. Bathrooms stink and aren't nice. Ticketing is inefficient with lack of signs for separate lines and to have driver's license out for will call. The seating is auditorium style and isn't intimate. There isn't any decor in the venue to dress it up - very frumpy. The seats are comfortable though. There also aren't many choices to buy for food or beverages, and we weren't allowed to take them into the concert. It would be helpful to light up the sign for the parking lot. We won't be returning. read more

This review is for the little swallows toddler music classes. If Matt S. is the teacher, then they will be great! He starts and ends on time, is high energy without being annoying, and the class is run really smoothly. The kids do a variety of songs that work on different skills (gross motor, fine motor, counting, etc.) Matt is great at including all of the children in the activities, and managing the room if one student is being shy or unruly or extra talkative or something. I would definitely recommend these classes to a friend, and know that if you sign up early, you can get an early bird discount. read more

Came out to watch a Sunday show at Commons Park tonight and arrived at 4:30 pm as that's what time it said on all the signs posted around the neighborhood. We sat till almost 6 with no band and when I decided to ask them if there was going to be a performer and if so what time, I was responded so impolitely. I give them two stars because I appreciate them putting these summer concerts on, but very less than impressed with their manners and response to my question. I think the staff needs to realize they represent more than just themselves up there. read more

My two young children's ages 4 & 5, received Swallow Hill music lessons for Christmas. These classes have been so much fun for them. They practice and are excited to go to class. They go to the Lowry location for class and they're enrolled in Ukulele and voice. There are several classes and lessons going on in the space for all ages and parents have a comfortable area to wait. I really love the environment and my kids are asking for more lessons. read more

We had a private work function here and the staff was incredibly accommodating- they bent over backwards for us when we needed a venue at the last minute. We held it in the cafe which is downstairs and had ample space for our party. There is a room divider so we were able to section our party off for a more intimate setting. The room also has a decent sized kitchen with a serving counter and a small stage with a piano. I didn't get a chance to explore more of the building so I would love to go back and check out a concert as they have some great music. There is a parking lot across the street which is a huge plus and they were having the carpeting replaced as part of their upgrades. read more

Without ever having visited the school, I signed up for beginner guitar classes on a whim, about a month after moving to Denver. I just finished my first 8-week session, and halfway through the session, I went ahead and registered for the second session. The class is nice and small, and the teacher (Chris "Citrus" Sauthoff) is awesome. He's a really talented musician, but manages to bring it down to beginner level for the class. All of the other employees I've met so far have been great and helpful. Parking is sometimes tricky - they have a lot across the street, but when you come for the evening class slots, you sometimes have to search for a spot. I have yet to see a show here, but they have them so often that I'm sure I will soon! read more

My wife came across them when she sought out private lessons and a class with Casey for the ukulele. I have attended a concert and a couple of recitals there. I HAD a great sense of them until I set up mandolin lessons with Julie G. She not only didn't show and had a substitute what was to be my first meeting, but didn't contact me before or after. Then, when I tried to set up a "second chance" lesson with her, she never responded. Luckily for Swallow Hill, I understand she is likely leaving to pursue other ambitions. She left a sour taste. If not for my wife's experiences with Casey, I'd have left a lower rating. read more

My 7 year old daughter has been taken classes here for over a year now and she loves it. I like that the parents are welcome to stay and watch their children practice. I believe this helps children a lot at home as the parent can help them when they are practicing. I couldn't be any happier with Swallow Hill. read more
