Came in to pick up some comics, I knew exactly what I was going for. I was shopping for a grand total of 14 minutes. See photo attached. The cashier in the green was helping out this one customer for over 12 minutes. There was a guy in front of me who eventually got out of line because he was tired of waiting. I eventually got tired of waiting, either get your stuff together and know what your system is or get off the cashier line. There should be no reason why I should be taking that much time to bring up a customer. read more

Visited recently to check out what's new and ended up walking away with X-Men '97 #1 and a Dark Knights of Steel #11. The staff was pretty friendly and helped me look for back issues. They have a large variety of comics and manga, but I do think it's difficult to look through if you're looking for a specific title (especially if you have to look through the back issues section). Apparently they also set up a new additional charge for bags and boards? The details of the bag/board policy is labeled on the shelves. I didn't catch the details, but it's something to look into if you're visiting for the first time. read more

If I could give it negative 5 stars I would lol. This place is shady, unprofessional, and downright hostile. Their Pokémon packs aren't factory sealed, pull rates are trash, and I suspect they're weighing them. A friend of mine also bought games here under a "7-day return policy," came back in 3 days, and was told they only take returns if they're broken (never mentioned at checkout or on the receipt). Staff gaslit him, called him belligerent" for asking to speak to the owner, and one even screamed "F*** YOU" as my friend and I left. This place is a joke -- buy your games and cards anywhere else. read more

I was born and raised in San Jose and I never knew about this place. I can spend hours here looking for issues and staring at the walls of comic books. They have a wide variety of comics. They have a big parking lot and when I visited it was full. Definitely will start getting my comics here for now on and spend more time going through all of the back issues. My husband and I are comic nerds and my husband loves magic. After brunch we went to SpaceCat to buy some stuff. We didn't realize it wasn't 10am yet, it was 9:51 am. We parked in front stoked, and when we went to the door, saw they weren't open yet we got back on our car to wait. There was also another car waiting so not unusual. As we were sitting in the car an employee who must hate people opened to the door and started at us, we figured he was going to say hello and to come on in, but he just stared at us then gave an annoyed look. So I popped open my door and ask if they were open, he answered with an irritated face and rudely said "In 15 minutes". Baffled we took our money elsewhere. We didn't bag on the door we didn't knock we just got back into our car, the employee was somehow annoyed by that. I had heard at one point they were trying to sell the place and no wonder with rude people like that. We ended up going to Hero's where the service is welcoming and they have a better selection. read more

I decided to check out SpaceCat as I am trying to familiarize myself with all the comic book stores in my area. When I arrived, I at first couldn't find it as the only signage they have is a little portable sign in front of their driveway, but a giant banner on the gate for opposing traffic to see. I had to make 2 U-Turns to be able to find the place. When I walked in, sadly I was not greeted, or asked if I was looking for something in particular. The staff were too busy chatting and gossiping about another coworker to talk to me. They have a pretty decent selection of comics, and I managed to find what I was looking for...after wiping the dust off of several issues and Funkos I wanted to look at. Once I got to the register, then the person behind the counter got a little chatty with me which was nice. They seem averagely priced for comics, but I don't think I will be returning unless I can't find a comic I'm searching for anywhere else. read more

Would not recommend coming here for Pokémon cards. Everything is priced well above market, even though they claim their pricing is based on TCGPlayer. For example, they had a Destined Rivals ETB priced at $130+ when the actual market value was around $86. I totally get that shops need to bump prices a bit to cover overhead, but charging $40+ over market feels purely profit-driven. What's disappointing is I actually wanted to support this place. I've been here before and even bought a Venom comic book collection. But the prices--and especially the customer service--just aren't it. During my visit, I spoke to one employee who was helpful, but there was another older gentleman who seemed like he was having a bad day. He was loudly complaining about work and just gave off a negative vibe. While browsing, I was interested in a Japanese Heat Wave booster box listed at $104 ($77 market price), a Grimsnarl EX full art single, and a Chopper One Piece single. The total came out to $123, so I politely asked if they'd be willing to do $120 cash. They were hesitant and told me their "Pokémon guy" was on lunch. I said okay, and then asked if the total would be $123 flat since their price sheet had different cash/card pricing. That's when the older gentleman raised his voice and snapped at me, saying: "There's tax on all things purchased in California. If you want to have less taxes, go drive 8 hours to Oregon!" I was completely respectful during the conversation, so this response caught me totally off guard. That moment killed any interest I had in buying--or ever coming back. Update: Yea after how this owner takes 0 accountability it's clear this is the place to avoid. How is comparing a collectible shop to a mcdonald's even the same... There are so many other shops that take trades and negotiate. This place is clearly saying that they do not support collectors and are purely profit driven. My friends recently came in and purchased something and tried to get a return for store credit. The shop wouldn't honor their policy on the receipt and told them "f*ck you" while leaving the store... This store is full of crash outs. If you are a collector please save yourself the headache and DO NOT come here... I went ahead and reported this place to the BBB/ FTC due to not following their return policy and bad business practices. I recommend everyone who has had a bad experience here do the same. read more

Saddened by the inconsistency of service and implications left by my interaction with an employee on this comic book Wednesday. Came in twice with my partner today, first time was greeted by a nice gentleman saying "howdy, let me know if you need any help". We found a cool variant of the DC K.O. first issue and a martian manhunter first issue. After the morning rush, we came back for the TPB of absolute batman and another copy of manhunter for a friend. unfortunately the bald white man at the checkout did not greet us, but everyone else that walked in. then while we waited to check out, i heard the same man asking the person ahead of me if they wanted bags and boards and was making friendly conversation. while my partner and i waited, we made conversation in spanish (just happen to be two bilinguals idk) and i noticed the man looking at us as we spoke but didn't think anything of it. once he checked out the man ahead of me, I had to be the one to say hello to him as he was just staring at me waiting for me to come up to the counter. i am not rude, i wont step up just because I am next without confirmation that they are ready to help me. except, after i said hello and walked up, he just said hello, no courtesy check if i wanted bags and boards or any friendly talk as he just had with the previous customer. rather made conversation with someone on the side while he checked out my things. along with, greeting every single person that walked in while he spoke to the people on the side. once he checked me out, he just placed my receipt on my things, no "have a nice day" or "thanks for stopping by". nothing. i can understand if the energy and effort to provide customer service just wasn't there for anyone else but i felt incredibly singled out, not sure if it was for being a woman or for speaking spanish inside of the store. This was my first comic book Wednesday but I have been here before and this is the first time something like this has happened to me. it's a shame because other employees are kind and hospitable and the selection is great. but that man left a bad impression and makes me feel unwelcome to come back if i will be the only person not deemed worthy of receiving bare minimum service. read more

SpaceCat has a wide variety of comic books, graphic novels, and manga. They also have some trading cards & vintage games. My trip to SpaceCat was solely for comics & graphic novels. I was very surprised at the wide selection they had for comic storage boxes and had been looking for a Batman one, which I ended up purchasing. They also have a large section of new/ongoing issues in the center of the store. It was a bit hard to pull out and go through issues on the bottom shelves since there isn't much space. This was pretty minor. All the graphic novels were sorted and alphabetized which made it very easy to find things. My only negative feedback is in regards to back issues. It did not look like there was any real organization system to them which made it difficult to go through since there were a lot of boxes. Other than that, my overall experience was positive and the comics & graphic novels were being sold at retail price. read more

The books cost about thirty cents each, and the distributor makes a profit by charging about 9 cents each for shipping. So I spent $2000 on the books, another $2000 for advertising, and nearly $2000 on labor. Rent costs $4300/mo. I certainly do not make a profit for Free Comic Book Day. It is my biggest advertising promotion for the year. I'm pretty sure we gave more away per person than any of the other stores in the tri-county area. Most all comics shops are struggling to make ends meet. Mine is no exception. I make less than the average income for people in the county. Never in my life have I had a owner of an establishment treat and talk to me in the manner this guy has done. I wouldn't recommend this run down place to my worst enemy. Not only did he treat me and my friend like dirt but the way he treated his employees was horrible as well. So why you ask because I parked next to someone and another car pulled in and blocked the other car from being able to leave I was parked alongside of the car the other car was parked in front of the car. Which leaves the question how can I block a car in when I'm parked alongside the car in question. He kicked me out of the store and said don't return. We were in San Jose to run some errands, which included going to Space Cat. The man behind the counter jumped to greet us and asked to take my backpack. The owner was talking with another customer. The owner did not move an inch as I tried to pass my bag to the employee. The employee was so helpful, friendly and provided exceptional customer service. I also got an opportunity to listen to the employee engage with his employer. The owner on the other hand, was so rude and was so disrespectful and had such an air of superiority I was taken off guard. I wanted to walk out but my partner was still shopping and asking questions. While I didn't interact with the owner, and he certainly didn't interact with me, I was shocked at the way he spoke to and about his employees. The owner's behaviour certainly created a hostile environment. I probably will not be back and I'm sure the owner will have nothing nice to say about me or my review. How would I rate my experience? Based on the employee, 5 stars ... but to see this abuse zero stars. I guess I'll average at 3. read more

About the reviews that say that he ripping off people, go online and check the prices ! He not getting any prices close to those that target/Walmart or GameStop get. This place was really cool, basically nerd heaven, I wasn't able to find any comics/manga I wanted, but if you like marvel/DC this is the store is the place for you. The video game section wasn't that big but it was really good, they had great prices and I really liked it. They also had a cards section but I didn't look much at it but it seems pretty good. The only thing stopping this from getting five stars was the place was really claustrophobic but other than that the workers were great and everything about it was pretty cool. read more

Let me start off by saying, I absolutely understand the pandemic happening at this time. This is a review written during the time of the COVID 19 outbreak. But that does not excuse the unprofessionalism and treatment I received while visiting. I have been a long time customer and made multiple subscriptions beforehand but this experience changed my mind, there are so many other comic stores in the area that are kinder, I don't need to be talked down to just because I'm young. Before my visit, Spacecat was sending me emails to visit them; they mentioned they needed all the support the could get being a small business at this time and I wanted to be there for them, so I geared up and headed out. Everything was going fine, I was just about to pay for comics I preordered when Bruce walks out from the back and points and screams at me, " Six feet." Taken aback I comply and just follow his ordered, I step back, " That isn't six feet, you know what, make it eight feet!" First of all, I was wearing a mask and maintaining a safe distance from the cash register (He acted as if I was hanging on the glass case). Second, his employee wasn't wearing a mask and I had no issues with it, he seemed just as shocked when his boss made that outburst. And lastly, a pandemic does not give you the right to point your fingers and yell at a customer, his behavior was so unprofessional, there is no reason in this world to justify it. I was so upset after the encounter, I emailed him to cancel my subscriptions right away and he replies a VERY DEMEANING email. In his email he writes, "Good Luck, and may no one you love die to someone's lack of Social Distancing." I repeat, I was respectful, I kept a distance, and I was well covered. Honestly, if you are that scared of the virus, DO NOT send me emails, constantly asking me to come in. I wanted to support you. I have for years. I love all the employees I had the pleasure of meeting and even you Bruce, in the beginning were fun to talk to. I didn't want to believe the low rated reviews. But by seeing that you reply so unprofessionally to every bit of criticism, I have one word of advice. Take tips from your employees, clearly they have a much more respectable manner than yourself and this is not the way to run a business. And with that I wish you good luck, for I'm taking my business elsewhere. And for others, if you go, avoid the manager at all cost if you want to maintain a good image of the store. read more

They have a collection of fandom from different genres. That's the only positive I can say. My story. Comics aren't my thing, but I get the appeal. I carry my things in a bag about the size of a small purse, this will come up in a little. I walked into SpaceCat hoping to find a gift. The conversation started helpful, it felt like a welcoming spot. After about 2-3 min of wondering through the store I was asked to give my bag to the front desk, "managers policy". Instantly I wonder if mothers need to hand over their purse if they bring a child . Or was I predetermined to he a threat to their business. I whole heartedly believe in equality. I imagine those who work here would hate to feel prejudged, and lesser, if they visited a locale in need of help. Yet they take no issue with looking at people and extrapolating their own conclusions. They assume the worst in clients. In my case they assumed the worse in me. I will not be returning. I highly recommend going to a different local comic shop or purchasing your items online. read more

Don't bother bringing trade ins. Trade in prices here are incredibly low, it's not even worth your time to have them "evaluated" as they clearly just get an idea of the items and give a nice round number, instead of actually assessing the items. The store is nice otherwise, but clearly they expect trade ins from people who don't know the value of their items, and will abuse that to their gain UPDATE: Given that the owner of this store has now given his two cents with a smarmy remark, should give you everything you need to know about this store; don't trade in, and don't trust them. Go somewhere else, because realistically this store won't be around in a few years anyway, especially with this sort of person running it. UPDATE 2 Good grief, this owner just really wants to dig this thing in further by trying to bully commenters it seems. My original comment was just not to do trades, it's not worth it, but given the childish response from the owner, just don't go to this store at all. Clearly if you don't agree with them, you're against them. If you don't want to accept trade ins, that's fine, but don't offer it as a service your store provides, and then complain when you do a shitty job of it. read more

I do not live 20 miles away in Fremont. I live 6 miles away in San Jose near the shop. There's no reason to be immediately grumpy and rude to every customer who asks a reasonable question. Obviously people want to ask questions so they know what to expect when they go there...even if it's 6 miles. I asked only TWO very quick questions, and those answers would have been more than enough to come. This owner is creating his own narrative that suggests it makes no sense for us (customers) to ask questions, which is simply terrible customer service. Very cool place. They have old school video game councils for sale. So much to take in as you walk around, ever square inch is utilized. Today is free comic book day so I grabbed me an X-men gold#1 and The Walking Dead #163. While I was walking around I spotted a cool hologram Batman DC Universe rebirth #22 and took it home with me. Over all this is a great comic book store with a friendly owner. If your like me and nerd out on comic books I'd definitely recommend them. read more

Store is very disorganized and a bit dirty. All of their backissues are on the bottom shelves in their graphic novel sections, didn't bother looking through them due to the disorganization and placement of the issues. 2 members of staff were in the store, 1 was busy having a conversation with their friend and the other seemed to want to do anything other than help a customer. read more

Every time I come in I regret it. Today was the last chance. I don't like sneaky or deceptive "policies" that just reflect an "I don't really care" attitude towards the customer. If you are going to charge and extra buck for a new comic that you pre-bagged, mark the REAL price on the bag, like you do on back issues. Super annoying to find the charge on the receipt AFTER you paid. It just feels dirty. There are lots of other shops in the South Bay I'd rather spend money in, so keep my 99 cents. read more

on behalf of my bf im writing this review because ultimately the service here took a turn of a events for what reason? bad communication on the staff! i want to preface that he's been an avid customer and loved coming here. but when wanting to return an item for credit WITHIN the 7 days it states on the receipt he was denied multiple times and treated poorly. he was told by staff that allegedly they can only accept a return if the item is broken? and then they say that they verbally told him when he purchased? ok if that's a rule please add that on to your receipt.. he asks for the managers info and gets denied then told to leave because they accuse him of acting "belligerent" and as he kindly does so because staff isn't being helpful an employee screamed "f*ck you"... as he walks out. excuse me? how is that any way to respond to an upset customer on your failed policy. im looking at the owners reviews and it pretty much looks like he sticks up for his poorly mannered staff. its just unfortunate bc im all for supporting small businesses that have been ran for years and years. it's just really upsetting that workers can't have the common decency to be helpful. but no they abuse their so called policy rules and act on ego.. not only that they claim they have footage of them saying their made up "broken item only" rule but then backtracked saying he can't see it. like wow ok then why bring it up? so you can have an ego boost? im sure people have their ups and downs with this establishment but wow im literally appalled. both my bf and i work in retail.. customer service at that! so we had our fair share with difficult customers.. so we approach any type of service worker with respect. but to full on lie and try to make my bf seem stupid, kick him out, then proceed to cuss at him. I am a big fan of SpaceCat. Deep back issue selection and a strong run on new releases. Yes, I do enjoy rummaging and have found some genuine gems in the short boxes. Pleasantly surprised at the quality and quantity of higher-end items, too. The display case has great rare, HTF, and desirable inventory displayed front-and-center at reasonable prices. Just waiting for that Hulk #181 to show up one of these days. This store specializes in video games and Pokemon, too. Overall staff is friendly, helpful, knowledgable, and courteous. Seems certain folks are easily offended; the staff ain't rude!! read more

I rarely feel compelled to write negative reviews as I believe companies/employees have "off days" and it's just a part of human nature and forgivable/excusable. But on multiple separate occasions, I've had negative experiences at Space Cat. I came in a few days ago, pretty close to around 8:47 PM. It looked like there was a D&D game or card tournament set up as there was a table with 3-4 people sitting around a table near the front of the store. I came in to look around and received glaring eyes from a gentleman near the counter who eyes me up for a few minutes and says "We're closed" so I replied "Oh I thought you close at 9:00pm?" The guy looks around and says "What time is it?" and I said "8:47pm" and he said "Yea we are closed" so I walked out, knowing that there was no interest in helping me. Not a "Sorry, we closed early for the day, we open tomorrow at XX" or "Sorry to inform you, but we closed due to a private event, etc" Not a great look and no empathy at all. As someone who has worked in retail, i would recommend, at the very least, to put a sign up on the door that says "closed early due to private event" or lock the doors and host the private event in the back where the public can't see. Point being, you never know who is going to walk into your shop and drop $$ on a purchase and risk them walking away and never returning due to a rude interaction with staff. On a separate occasion, I've walked in and experienced two employees arguing in the back, they were audible to the point where the folks in the store could hear it. Finally an employee from in front of the store said something to them to knock it off or what not, but it was pretty unprofessional. On another occasion before that, one of the employees was pretty rude when I asked if there was a restroom I could use. On a separate visit, I overheard another customer ask to use the restroom, and they were welcomed to use it. I brought this up to the gentleman was pretty stern and standoffish saying that I can't use the restroom. No big deal, if it's for employees only, then I get that, but instead of saying "Sorry, the restroom is for employees only" the gentleman proceeded to be argumentative about it. If you're going to make exceptions for some, but not for others with no good reason, it's a bad look and inconsistent. My advice to the owner is to work on consistency with your policies, train your customer facing employees to treat all customers fairly and offer the same level of service to all. You never know who your next big spender might be so it's in your best interest to keep your potential customers happy when all it takes is some soft skill training for your employees. 2 stars because on the off chance, I've actually found some pretty cool stuff in their retro games section. read more

I've given SpaceCat (I still love the name) some time and randomly came back in recently. I think the owner has talked to his staff, they came off much less arrogant and... stupid/naïve/deceptive feeling. Full disclosure the owner reached out and we chatted a little bit. I however waited quite awhile so I knew I'd get an organic experience. Staff was friendly overall. This can't in good conscience be a 5 star review for me, it's not a store for me, I am mainly a MTG and miniature wargaming person, their supply of MTG is still limited and a bit pricey, which is fine, they aren't a store that runs events. They come up as a TCG store when you search for MTG so I have to take this into account. This is really a comic book store in my opinion, sure they have some video game collectibles but I'm pretty sure a comic book person would love this place! Massive collections of comics, graphic novels, some art books and manga. I am not into video games so I couldn't tell you if they have a good selection of them.
