This place was recommended to me by a friend/colleague who comes here on the regular. I decided to try it out too. Up a flight of stairs you walk into a dark, quiet paradise. The massage therapists are great. They have some very powerful hands! Sometimes I say go hard, sometimes medium. They will work specific areas if you request, or you can get an all over experience, and let them find the spots that need the most work and relaxation. The prices are great for NYC and the location. Do not go to Spa 56. I tipped 20% and the spa director still pressured me to tip more, repeatedly asking if I could add more on my card. It was uncomfortable and honestly humiliating. I booked through Groupon and they also added a "service tax" at the end that wasn't clearly explained. The so-called Korean body scrub was sloppy and nothing like an authentic Korean scrub. The room wasn't even properly stocked -- the lotion bottle was nearly empty. Terrible service, aggressive tipping pressure, and not worth the money. Save your time and go somewhere else. read more

Had a great massage here, the ladies were sweet. However, I very much disliked how they highly emphasized tips before I even got to process the bill. They also reminded me right after I booked the appointment (tip please). As much as I love to tip, I despise being pressured/forced to before I get to do it out of my own will. As I was going through the bill, they would stop me to say "tip" multiple times, there is nothing more discouraging and disappointing than being forced to tip. a year later still a great massage, I had a different massage person, but still I think they do an amazing job here - and man was she strong. I should in fact go more than once a year and perhaps I'll try to go a little more as I really feel so much better right now than I did this morning. It's still a very clean place, yes sometimes you can hear people at the desk - but even when I was checking out the woman behind the desk was trying to be quiet and I may have accidentally been a little loud - not intentionally but I could tell she was trying to have the front a quiet area - which is good. Anyway the rooms have sliding doors - which block most noise and I like that so much more than curtains, and obviously people are coming in and out so to expect complete silence not realistic. The massage was good but at the end of my service when I went to tip In cash $20 they told me that my tip was not enough, instead of being grateful for the gratuity she requested more. I bought a Groupon through Livingsocial for the 40 minute body scrub & shower. It was phenomenal. The technician was extremely professional and thorough. She made sure I was comfortable and warm enough throughout the service. The scrub itself was incredible. The combination of massage and scrubbing left me completely relaxed and my skin soft and glowing. The shower afterwards was soothing and invigorating. My daughter and I got a couple massage, after the massage her necklace she took off was missing. We asked about it and she just said" I don't know." I asked her to ask the other therapist, she disappeared for a second and came back with no explanation. Just checked us out. The massage was ok but they were talking the whole time to us and each other. They kept leaving with the door open which is really creepy when you can't see. Who knows who came?!?
