Getting ready for takeoff (05/20/25)! @SouthwestAir #SWAPic @Fly_BUR #Burbank #Airport #Travel
Jeff B.

(Traveled 05/20/25 TU @ 10:55am and many times before): Sometimes you wanna get away from the southwest at great prices... but in this case I remained in the southwest! I recently flew roundtrip with Southwest Airlines from Hollywood Burbank Airport BUR to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport PHX. They had been my favorite domestic carrier for years (I wished they flew internationally!) until Alaska Airlines dethroned them. Southwest Airlines cornered the southwest and west coast air traffic markets, respectively; therefore, in recent years I've used them to travel (mostly for work) to Honolulu, Las Vegas, Portland, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, and this time Phoenix. Did this airline still rule the southwest skies!? PURCHASE Roundtrip Wanna-Get-Away Airfare ($207.95): Nowadays, I booked one-way flights because I usually had more flexibility when I needed to return. However, I had a definite travel window on this recent vacation/business trip, so it made sense for the roundtrip option. Since I booked the flight three months before its departure, I felt this fare was fairly reasonable (an average $104.00 each way) for domestic air travel during the medium season (I returned right before the Memorial holiday weekend). On a morning direct flight that arrived in Phoenix around 12:30pm the same day, it was all good. Checked Luggage - 2 Pieces (FREE; N/A this instance): I traveled very light especially for a quick trip such as this, so I only had a carryon and backpack. As of this review, Southwest Airlines has since started charging for checked luggage as all airlines did. FLIGHT EXPERIENCE ~Check-in: I checked-in online 24-hours prior (Group B Position 10!), had my QR code boarding pass on their app, and traveled with only a carryon and backpack, so I was ready to go! I had Global Entry & TSA PreCheck, so my time with security checkpoints and the necessary TSA pleasantries was efficient and minimal. When it was time, passengers were queued-up in order of their boarding group and number (i.e. A/B/C and 1/2/3, etc.). The flight felt like it arrived shortly after it departed. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=MhgnmGLQWLrab5fU-iBf7w ~Seats: Come on, it was the same sardine can like all airplanes these days. If you ever flew with Southwest Airlines, seat selection was first-come first-served. I always favored the back of the plane close to the restroom and snacks. I was able to snag my usual window seat - yes! ~In-flight Meals (Varied; FREE this instance): I opted for my normal Seagram's Ginger Ale https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=kR5TEGLrQz1MyxG504oQ_w and one of the usual pretzel snacks https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw&select=pvc5dILjxUf26Q-ZAlxM4Q on Southwest Airlines that I loved. ~Lavatory: I'd done my business at the terminal before we left, so I had no idea of the condition of the restroom closest to me. ~Service & Amenities: All uniformly-dressed flight attendants were adequate and spoke perfect English. None of the seats had video monitors for movie/show watching, music listening, and games playing. The seats themselves were roomy enough. No blankets, headphones, or pillows were provided. The drink/snack cart rolled out shortly after the plane leveled off after takeoff. There were no carryon baggage fees. PARKING (Varied; N/A this instance) My brother dropped me off and later picked me up, so no parking was involved. However, the airport offered onsite parking structures and surrounding lots with rates that started as low as $3.00 and upwards from there based upon your decision. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE I was in Terminal 1 Gate A6 where the waiting area had large windows to look out onto the tarmac, spacious enough, several long rows of seats, and generally a dated appeal. There were sufficient places to sit throughout the terminal. Plenty of natural lighting came in through the large windows while a ton of electric ceiling lights filled in the rest. Once on the airplane (I forgot to note the type of plane), it seemed like any other, so nothing really needed to be said or seen here. ATTIRE Totally casual, so I would normally be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. I liked to be unencumbered and unfettered, so the least amount of clothing, especially while I traveled through an airport, the better! OVERALL My roundtrip flight on Southwest Airlines out of Hollywood Burbank Airport BUR was fine and got me to Phoenix safely which truthfully was all that mattered to me on any domestic flights. I wished there were seat video monitors that helped pass the time. In any case, I'd fly and recommend them again. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $208.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). And, they accepted my credit card of choice...AMEX! 4.0 STARS

Southwest Airlines is my favorite airline. They have always been able to take care of my flying needs. Things have been changing so much in the passenger airline business, I wasn't sure I would be able to use them for my flights. Lax used to have non-stop flights to my favorite cities, which is no longer the case. I did find that Southwest has increased the number of flights leaving from Burbank Airport. The Hollywood Burbank Airport is actually closer to me so it works out well. I just returned from one of those obligatorily family events to the Midwest. I need a wheelchair and am visually impaired. I was able to find a phone number where I could talk to a live person to help me plan my trip. She was very helpful in helping me choose an appropriate flight both going and returning. She double checked before she hung up to make sure that I had confirmation. She also was able to give me tips on how to deal with my luggage at check-in and baggage claim. I got my boarding pass 24 hours ahead of my flight. I followed the instructions I was given to check-in curbside. The wheelchair was waiting for me and it was a smooth ride all the way through security to my gate. During the flight I received incredible service from a very helpful staff. They called ahead as we landed and there was a wheelchair waiting for me at the gate. Friendly and helpful service the entire event. Returning, I called Southwest again to confirm the procedure for my return flight. Different airport, different procedure. I was supposed to check in again curbside and a wheelchair was supposed to be waiting at check-in. Unfortunately, this did not happen. There was no curbside check-in or anyone from the airline outside. When I entered the check-in area there was no one to explain how I could get some help. My friend assisting me for check-in could not find which line I was to be in. We went to the Priority Line to ask for assistance. My cane indicates my visual disability. She was very curt, but did check me in. No smile during the encounter. I went to a waiting area designated for wheelchairs. After a 20 minute wait, I was helped by a very nice attendant who breezeed me through security and situated me by my gate. Very helpful. There were elevators involved. The Southwest personnel made sure that I was well taken care of before boarding. I was helped to my seat and before I was seated was told to fold up my cane. I told the attendant that I was just trying to organize so that I could fasten my seat belt. I was not interfering with people finding a seat. The attendant addressed other passengers the same unfriendly way. I realize everybody has a bad day but this particular attendant was taking it out on passengers that he was supposed to be helping. I asked for assistance with a wheelchair upon landing in Burbank. He explained to me that it would be taken care of after the plane landed. I waited quietly until everyone had deplaned. I asked a different attendant if my wheelchair had arrived. He informed me that no one had called it in, but he would take care of it. He did and after a wait the wheelchair showed up and I was taken to the baggage claim. The wheelchair attendant was very helpful and friendly with a great attitude. He helped me find my luggage and took me out to wait for my transportation home. It's too bad that I had both extremes of service with Southwest. The very best and the most disappointing. I still recommend Southwest to my friends. They are still my favorite airline.

Everyone from the front baggage check, to wheelchair attendant, right up to the flight crew have been amazing. Lots of smiles and good mornings from everyone. Shout-out to Jose and Paul (Pablo) who greeted me right away at the curb, checked my bags and got me to my gate lickety split.

Plane view from standing on loading ramp.

This is not my typical airport for California trips, but with a Universal Studios trip we booked this airport. I was shocked that they deboard outside and think that could be bothersome if there was rain. Thankfully we had sunny California weather. All the personal were very friendly, and will continue to be a Southwest Airlines customer for affordable flights with great service!

I fly southwest out of Burbank quite frequently - have been for several years. I visit my son in college in Salt Lake City multiple times throughout the year and southwest offers straight shots so it's very convenient. I live in the easternmost part of LA county so Burbank is a lot closer than LAX - and definitely much less chaotic. It can be a bit more expensive than flying out of LAX though and often has more stops depending on your destination. But with southwest going up to SLC it's usually pretty comparable. Southwest is unique in their boarding process. You're assigned a "boarding position" on check in that consists of a letter and number - such as "A 42". They board in groups by the letter first then the number. And they have stations marked with number groups to line up at - and you line up according to your position number. And once on the plane it's open seating so sit wherever you like. It usually goes pretty smoothly - especially at Burbank. I've never had boarding issues there. But have definitely had chaotic boarding experiences at other airports using this method. Sometimes when flights are very full I've seen people that boarded early trying to save seats and fighting over seats and people being aggressive trying to get "good seats". I think just having assigned seats on check in like every other airline would be better imo. But of all the southwest flights I've had out of Burbank I can honestly said I've had a fantastic experience. I've never been delayed out of this location, staff are organized and very welcoming, the planes are always clean, gates are clean and orderly - all in all I have had great experiences here and will definitely continue to fly southwest out of Burbank as often as I can - especially for my SLC trips.

Delays delays delays! Last three times I have flown SW there have been major delays, one was 8 hours late! And of course the flights were on time when I got to the airport , only delayed after it was too late to do anything else: today a guy is working on an engine and shaking his head, looks like I am headed for a cancellation

Today Only. Southwest has UNBELIEVABLE DEALS with Throwback prices back to the 70's. Fly to the opposite coast as low as $100 One Way!

AN ABSOLUTELY MUST DO! Southwest Airlines always has consistently low prices on flights especially if you book in advance. The flights are safe & secure & knock on wood I have never had any problems. The crew are always helpful & friendly. They have lots of corny jokes they throw in when explaining some of the boring rules & regulations - to keep things light. INSIDE TIP #1 You can SAVE even more money when Costco offers their gift certificates which is usually several times a year. Buy a $500 gift certificate for $450. Costco now lets you purchase up to 5 certificates per offering several times a year. INSIDE TIP #2 If your fare ever goes down in price hit change & rebook the same flight & you will receive that difference back as a credit that you can use for a future flight. INSIDE TIP #3 Check their website & App periodically they have some Special Deals during the year. In October 2024 they had One Way Tickets to the East Coast from California for $100 & up. That's an UNBELIEVABLE STEAL & a Throwback to the prices of the 1970's! I LOVE the new 737 planes modern planes with 3 bathrooms instead of the usual 2. It's much more convenient & there's less lines. The luggage however loads a completely different way - a little awkward but I guess I'll get used to it. If you get lucky maybe you will score a ride on their latest model 737 MAX 8. They have 3 bathrooms & 2 built in chargers at every single seat located on the back of the tray table. The old standard jack & the new USB C. This is a GAME CHANGER! No longer do I have to hear people complain "I can't do anything. My phone is Dead!" LOL! In Burbank they load & deplane the aircraft front & back so it's so much easier & quicker. Exiting the back you will have to go down a flight of stairs. Also Burbank which is next to Hollywood is a smaller airport. It's a lot easier & quicker to get in & out of rather than LAX which is Huge & a NIGHTMARE! Some people complain about flying Southwest because there is no assigned seating. You check in online & are given a letter ABC & a # 1-30 or 31-60. You line up at the terminal & then choose your own seat inside the aircraft. I actually like this it adds to the adventure. I never know where I'll be sitting until the moment I get on the plane & see what seats are available. Then I'm scrambling for a seat before someone else grabs it. LOL! It's a Throwback & holdover of earlier days of aviation when there were no computers & no, pre assigned seats didn't exist. This sets Southwest apart from other airlines. But they say this will be changing sometime in the future. There will be people who love it & people who hate it & say I liked it the old school way - Bring it back. LOL! It used to be, you had to have Mega Bucks & be really Rich to have the Good Life, not anymore. The Game has changed. You've been Upgraded. Now You Can Live Like a King on a Limited Budget!

Flying into Burbank when visiting SoCal is 1000% the way to go, especially on Southwest Airlines. It is soooo quick, and they board and deplane the jets from front AND back. Prices are low too. Both legs of my SWA Vegas to Burbank and back trip were under $100. I think my Lyft ride to the airport from my house was almost $50. TSA is a breeze, except for the screamer agents, "Next! I said Next! Damn Granny, are you hard of hearing?"

Gone are the days when we had two free checked bags. I like going to the Burbank for flights since you can board or exit in the rear.

Great ground crew in Burbank & in Salem Oregon -- especially Ron & Echo in Salem & Jordane in…read moreBurbank Even the TSA on both ends is delightful . ‼ Avelo Flight attendants are RUDE, inattentive, pay no attention to passengers, allow bags blocking floor during take off & landing AND allow people who paid lower rates for their seats to move up to the extra legroom seats that others have paid a hefty fee for. I have flown Avelo 5 times since they began flying direct into Salem, Oregon in 2023. My Flite attendants on flite # Tuesday, 2nd July, Salem to Burbank was the WORST I have ever encountered domestically or Internationally, and I am a frequent traveler . The most rude large female attendant,Ashley, had an unpleasant attitude at boarding. By the way do not expect any greeting from Avelo attendants they just stand & speak amongst themselves! In this case on the 2nd July they were complaining about wheelchair, stroller, and car seat passengers. Offering NO help. We sat on the runway for at least 30 minutes due to a mechanical issue Flite attendants offered no water, didn't check to see that bags blocking rows were stowed for safety requirements or make any announcement -- the pilot finally did after 20 minutes of sitting After takeoff I entered the front lavatory (I was in seat 2 C) There was NO toilet paper, hand towels, or seat covers -- no more than 2-3 people had used the lavatory before I did. Hence obviously no staff replenished supplies nor tidied up pre takeoff . When I told 2 of the women, Ashley, and a very unkempt, wild haired employee standing chatting they were rude and one mouthed "bxxxh" at me. She then proceeded to say to me " thanks for telling us how to do our job" What is the job of Avelo Flite attendants... appears to be nothing!!! Upon returning to my extra legroom seat suddenly a very very obese woman -- taking up 2 seats with the armrest up -- appeared in my row. She had been assigned a seat several rows behind me-- I told the staff that this was inappropriate as I had paid extra for the seat in row 2. Ashley told the large woman that "Ms Privileged did not want her in her row" -- referring to me and moved her to another extra legroom seat behind me. Eventually 4 people in seats further back in the plane ended up moving to the extra legroom seats all around and behind me with no word from attendants. When mentioned to the only friendly and active attendant, Ashlyn, she replied, "moving seats is not allowed but I am not working the front of the plane so there is nothing I can do" This situation on Avelo certainly wouldn't be tolerated on any other airline, one in coach is not allowed to move forward to empty business or first class seats. Avelo has attempted to brand themselves as a budget airline -- it is far from it-- carry on or checked bags are $60 + each, seats with any extra legroom is up charged extravagantly. Round trip for me was approximately $500 -- not inexpensive. I am hoping that Alaska or some other airline will add flites to Salem as I travel there frequently due to parents, family, and business. In my various 5 round trip flites I have witnessed Flite "non- attendants" sitting eating meals, reading magazines, playing solitaire and other games on their phones, and gathering in the front galley speaking loudly and inappropriately in front of passengers. On the flite up to Salem from Burbank the attendant in her jump-seat chomped, cracked, and blew bubbles with her gum the ENTIRE Flite I was in the 1st row hence could not ignore her poor manners. This was beyond annoying. NEVER have I exited a flight and immediately requested to speak with a manager or supervisor but I certainly did after this trip Very very nice man called Jordane at the Avelo podium in Burbank took notes and said someone would contact me -- a week later of course, no one has. Also the website for Avelo is not up to par making it very difficult to make or change reservations, add bags, book special assistance or any other options. Sadly I am forced to fly Avelo as it is the only airline flying directly into Salem

I've been flying JSX for a number of years, ever since they were a fledgling airline. I've only…read moreflown their Burbank-Las Vegas route, one of their most popular. Burbank was their first LA airport; they now also fly out of LAX, Santa Monica and Orange County. I've seen the brand's fast growth, as witnessed by their ever-increasing number of destinations, subsequent increased crowding at their airport hangars, and ever-increasing costs for flights, valet parking and rental cars (JSX works exclusively with Go Rentals). JSX's main advantage over traditional commercial airlines is their more comfortable overall experience. Touted as a semi-private airline, they fly out of private hangars, thus avoiding TSA. You are only asked to arrive 20-30 minutes prior to your departure. There is no online check-in available or needed, it's a simple and fairly quick process. Since the planes have no overhead bins, all bags are checked except what can fit under your seat. The waiting areas in the hangars are lounge-like, with complimentary snacks, a hot beverage machine and a flavoured-water machine. The airplanes are all small Embraer ERJ 135's or 145's with an average capacity of 30 passengers. There is one flight attendant. Beverages (including alcohol) and a snack tray are complimentary. Wi-Fi is free (Starlink) . There is one restroom at the rear; I've always found the water pressure in the sink to be very low. I've mostly flown the Embraer ERJ 135, 10 rows with a 1-2 seat configuration. Twice I've flown the 145, 16 rows with a 1-1 configuration, but these seem to not be used so much on the BUR-LAS route. I've seen the Burbank hangar go through a few modifications over the years, all for the better. The restrooms were quite pathetic in the past. The waiting area has 2 sections, one more enclosed and quiet--this area has been improved. The boarding area now has more security measures like a conveyor belt for screening your carryon. With the airline's growth, there have been some negatives. Flights have increased more than $100 each way to/from Vegas. The cost for choosing your seat also increased. Parking was always valet-only, the cost is now prohibitive. It's more economical to rideshare here, as do most folks, causing a traffic backup in their drop-off area. With more frequent flights arriving and departing, and with more destinations, the lounge can get crowded. Plus in Burbank, luggage from arriving flights is brought directly into the hangar (vs. in Vegas where passengers collect their luggage plane-side). I've only had a flight delay once. With about 6 flights/day or more to Vegas, a flight cancellation is not as horrific an issue as it would be to a destination with less flights per day. Despite their growing pains and increasing costs, I'm still a fan of JSX.

Serious savings for those willing to forego some, if not all, comforts…read more The wife got us tickets from Burbank to Denver aboard Frontier Airlines for $26 per person. For such a low price, we were willing to deal with the narrow and non-reclining seats, our assigned seats not being next to each other, and even having to rebook our flight altogether because Frontier decided to cancel the original one. We could've paid a fee to pick our seats, but we decided that we could stand being apart for two hours to save some dough. Fortunately, we were both placed in a row that had one seat unoccupied. Frontier only does food and drink service for those willing to pay up. Pro tip: you can pack a lunch ahead of time and bring it through TSA! Frontier certainly isn't for everyone. I'm a skinny guy, but even I would've been very cozy with my rowmates if I had ended up in a full row. Frontier can be a good option if you're willing to roll the dice, and their fares still seem competitive even if you decide to pony up to suffer a little less.

I keep trying to give Frontier a chance. Truly. I have flown with them multiple times and every…read moresingle experience has felt like stepping into an experiment where the theme is frustration. Flight cancellations without warning. Flights delayed overnight with no gate, no information, no apologies. Customer service that feels like a maze built out of hold music and broken chat windows. Hours spent trying to get a real answer, only to get a voucher for fifty to seventy five dollars that can only be used on future Frontier flights. That is like getting a coupon to return to the same restaurant that gave you food poisoning. The planes feel tired. The operations feel chaotic. It is impossible to tell if anything is on schedule or if anyone at the airline actually knows what is happening. Tonight it was a mechanical issue, again. No clear communication at LAX. No signage directing passengers to the shuttle to the international terminal, which is a long ride if you are coming from Burbank. Frontier simply does not tell customers what they need to know to make smart decisions. Families with kids, people with jobs, travelers with tight schedules deserve better than this level of silence. Frontier's prices look cheap, but the cost backfires when they strand you overnight with no plan and hand you a coupon that only works if you decide to roll the dice again. My advice is simple. You get what you pay for, and sometimes you get even less. If you are considering flying Frontier, understand that you are buying a ticket for uncertainty and frustration. There is no reliability. There is no real customer support. There is only damage control and excuses. I am done giving them chances.

On our return flight, there was a little glitch with the caterer where they ran short of the cheese plate that had been ordered for me. The flight attendant Angela, who I found out had only been doing this job for two months was so apologetic, and offered me other options, but unfortunately, I have a very restricted diet so none of those were doable. I told her not to worry as I always carry food with me just in case but she said she was going to check in economy to see if they might have a cheese plate for me which they did. For the inconvenience (tho we kept telling her not to worry;) but she insisted on giving us some additional mileage and then Alaska took it even further and sent us a $75 credit which was beyond amazing! She did an amazing job being as new as she is handling that issue and everything else as well that she needed to do to take care of us and the others in first class on the flight. Thank you, Angela and bravo Alaska for hiring such a wonderful flight attendant! We make frequent trips to the Washington area and we'll definitely book again on Alaska after such a wonderful experience !

I am so happy to fly Delta out of Burbank. Let's be honest, we would all rather fly out of BUR than LAX. I have pre-check so I was able to time my airport arrival with minimal wait time and was there within 5 minutes of boarding time. I was flying to BOS with a connection to DEN. The crew was pleasant and my flight to DEN was good. Since I was on the shorter leg the airplane was smaller and it was obvious it was an older airplane, which I understand. We landed on time and safely.

This suitcase is brand new. They changed our flights at least 3x. My original flights only had one layover both ways but they changed them so I had two layovers on the arrival and departure. They also added a 7 hour layover on my return and I was not compensated at all. I was not given lounge access or any accommodations. I went to the customer service line waited an hour just for them to tell me there was nothing they could do. On the flights going to our destination they offered us two meal vouchers but they did not offer food on the planes so we were not able to use them. The worse part was the 7 hour layover because I never would have booked the flights if that was going to be the case.
