And the best part... a loud alarm came on from a gate that did not get turned off for several minutes which is always pleasant at 5am. So if you're flying American just be prepared...

Inside was very clean, lots of new shopping experiences, food, etc. the line to check in to our gate was short and moved fast, the security line was also very quick. Could have been we were there at 6am, but either way a much better experience than my previous ones. Traffic getting too and leaving LAX is still a bear and why I am leaving this as 4 stars. It is such a pain driving there and driving back, the round about can be difficult as well, but it is mainly the freeways that are the headache. Overall, very happy with my recent experience at LAX and I would consider traveling through there again when I have to, but the traffic still does not make it my first choice, although they have made tons of great improvements to LAX overall. But if you want to visit the Amex Centurion Lounge or anything other than the Alaska Lounge, you are in no luck. It's $60 something / hr to use the Alaska lounge if you don't have their pass or credit card or flying First Class. The Centurion Lounge is quite a hike and will require walking all the way to the Tom Bradley International Terminal which is nowhere close. The waiting area near the Terminal 6 Gates are crowded and unpleasant. Too bad there's no good dining options besides the lousy pizza or burger joints.

Staff generally are annoyed but not as bad as JFK. They ain't winning awards for customer service but they do explain things pretty well. This time around I flew out of gate 52D. If you're in any of the 52 gates other than A or B, know that you need to get to the 52 gate and then you'll have to chat with a gate agent, scan your boarding pass, then take another bus to your gate. Thats how big LAX is. You need to jump on another 5 minute shuttle ride to get to your gate. The 52 gates aren't world class. It's pretty old. Probably just neglected since most of the flights here are regional / short distance flights. There's flights to Seattle, Bay Area, etc from here. Overall verdict - you could certainly do worse. But for how big it is, I think it's a pretty well oiled machine. And that in of itself earns a 3 star from me.

That's sort of worrisome if you have a 5 AM flight and boarding starts at 4:15. Security lines are a mess, not well-staffed and the equipment is ancient. Even flying first class United, you will be rushed and sweaty trying to board your 5 am flight. No time to grab water. Worst setup ever. I didn't realize that some terminals just shut down. This means also that the lounge will be closed of course. Unpleasant and stressful situation that is pretty much reason enough for not flying United again.

AUTOMATED PEOPLE MOVER There should be an elevated electric train called the automated people mover (APM) linking light rail, terminals, and parking and rental cars for use this year, pending successful testing. Hope to see this soon, as it's very much needed to alleviate traffic on roads.
