The rest of my experience at LAX was fine, I did not have extensive layovers at the airport either on the trip to Kauai or the trip home from Kauai. The LAX staff I encountered were all professional. I got some fresh air outside at LAX, and returned through security, helping a man behind me who had several toddlers and several bins, and that's where i lost my driver's license! Despite calling LAX security and lost and found numerous times, I never got my driver's license back. This was in the "old days" and on arrival at Kauai, I went to the rental car place and my county courthouse in Madison County Alabama faxed some documentation to the rental car company in Kauai and fortunately I was able to get a rental car that way!

Centered at the rear of the LAX horseshoe upper/lower roadways and the main international gateway for LAX, serving over 45 international carriers and a few domestic flight connections. The worst part is just getting there by car. Always try to give yourself plenty of time because of traffic. Once you're inside the terminal, you usually don't have to take shuttles or leave the terminal; more than 50% of the international flights leave from here. Duty Free is pretty big and there's decent shopping. It's also known as 'Terminal B'. I'm so happy it's still called the Tom Bradley terminal because he deserves to have his name on it. He was an amazing mayor. You can get direct flights to almost anywhere in the world from this terminal. The layout is pretty clear and it's not confusing like CDG or Frankfurt. My favorite lounge here is definitely the Star Alliance lounge because it has an open terrace where you can sit with a view of "The Great Hall"; that's what the large area that includes most of the duty free shopping inside the terminal is called. Star Alliance (and One World) business lounges are upstairs near the top level. The Amex Centurion lounge is underground with no windows and a bit depressing IMO. As far as arrivals, if you have "global entry", it's a breeze. Sometimes I'm in and out in 10 minutes. And if you don't mind paying about $50 extra for a premium Lyft or Uber black, then you can get picked up right in front at the terminal arrivals and don't have to take the shuttle bus and go to the separate ride share satellite area. As I usually travel solo, it depends on how exhausted I am at arrival. If you are tired after a 13 hour flight and have luggage, the shuttle bus that stops at every terminal is a complete nightmare. Which is why I sometimes splurge for the deluxe Uber or Lyft and get picked up at arrivals. I've never seen a "satellite" ride share area which you have to bus to like this one in any airport in the world. I wish they could find a better system though than riding a bus to the satellite rideshare area. I've actually (surprisingly) managed to find some good deals booking through Lyft vs Uber for airport pickups. Don't forget to compare both prices before you select one. I've heard of people actually taking a free hotel shuttle to one of the nearby airport hotels and then catching a rideshare from the hotel to save money, but that may be a little extreme if you have a lot of luggage.

This is a matter of fact update and is based on sole experience of my recent visit. Hmmm, where to I begin? OK, my story will begin at my experience of checking into a departing flight out of LAX, Terminal 4, the terminal for American Airlines. Preface also by saying the terminal is under massive renovation and has been for some time and when will they complete it? Who knows? OK- Now Pay clear attention- I get dropped off on LEVEL 2 which is the departing level for all flights. My boarding pass is on my phone so I need not stop at the check in counters. I tried, TRIED to be smart and follow the signs as I weave my way through the terminal to get to the departing gates This starts my journey! 1- Signs take me from LEVEL 2 to LEVEL 4 where the TSA check in sites are albeit Pre Check, Regular, Clear and the like. Keep in mind this is just through the security where they check your identification 2- Once past the TSA check in lines you then take the escalators or elevators back DOWN to LEVEL 3 where you then go through the screen machines. 3- once past the screening machines you take the escalator or elevators BACK DOWN to LEVEL 1 (Level 1 is street leve, the place where you normally pick up your luggage on arrival then go out to curbside) NOW I AM CONFUSED. I'M TRYING TO DEPART AND I'M AT THE ARRIVAL STATION???? I look around for signs and there is none. I so I decide to be like a LEMMING and follow the other walkers.... You walk through the tunnels going back in towards the gates and there is counter foot traffic with the arriving passengers. What a mess! Once you get to the end of the tunnel, you will take the escalator or elevator UP to LEVEL 2, the walk to the next bank of escalator and take it UP to LEVEL 3... WAIT Not done yet!!! Then take the escalator UP to LEVEL 4 where the gates are! Did you follow all of this? Do you need a map? Footnote-it was 3643 steps (Yup, counted) ok my watch counted the number of steps it took from the point of getting dropped off at curbside then situated at my departing gate... Unless you take the short cut near Terminal 1, you're going to be crawling through five other terminals before you get to yours. Since Alaska is the primary airline, this hub is constantly bustling. Gates are small, and there's never enough seating as you get closer to take-off. Food options are okay, though the longest line is always the one at Starbucks. You'll have to hunt for your water bottle water filler, but it's there. One advantage of this active terminal is that you only have to drive by two others when you exit. Disadvantage? If you're taking a shuttle, sometimes they're full before they arrive. After a long flight, that is terminally disappointing!

When you do find one, they're clueless. It seems they're as confused about the horrible signage and directions around the airport as well. I had an agent tell me to stand next to "the green pillar" to wait for an uber.... But she pointed at a purple one.... Assuming she was colorblind, I looked for a green pillar. I found it. Called my uber, waited next to it. Turns out? You don't wait next to the pillars at all. You take them to the Ride app section and get picked up there. Not sure why that's so hard to articulate, "wait by that green pillar, and a shuttle will take you to where you wait for an uber" would've been a pretty damn simple direction, but again, the agents here are VERY confused.

When I know I'm flying out of this terminal, I don't think about getting to the airport early. Whereas if it was another terminal I absolutely would. Staff generally are annoyed but not as bad as JFK. They ain't winning awards for customer service but they do explain things pretty well. This time around I flew out of gate 52D. If you're in any of the 52 gates other than A or B, know that you need to get to the 52 gate and then you'll have to chat with a gate agent, scan your boarding pass, then take another bus to your gate. Thats how big LAX is. You need to jump on another 5 minute shuttle ride to get to your gate. The 52 gates aren't world class. It's pretty old. Probably just neglected since most of the flights here are regional / short distance flights. There's flights to Seattle, Bay Area, etc from here. Overall verdict - you could certainly do worse. But for how big it is, I think it's a pretty well oiled machine. And that in of itself earns a 3 star from me.

TERMINALLY BUSY…read more Thanks to Southwest and Jetblue, Terminal 1 at LAX is bustling. Expect a bottleneck outside this popular terminal due to so many drop-offs and pick-ups. If you take a shuttle, they have an exclusive lane that lets them navigate faster. TSA usually moves fast, but sometimes the lines are long. Mid-day, I waited less than 5 minutes. Pre-dawn, can be busy. Food options include Urth Caffe & Bar, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Chick-fil-A, and Rock & Brews. Restrooms tend to be clean, and there are water refill stations near them. Gates are often overflowing with people, so I'll find a quiet spot with a view as soon as I've reached the concourse. It's usually peaceful until someone inconsiderate puts their phone on speaker. Dude, NO ONE wants to listen to your nonsense. NO ONE. If only Southwest had a club lounge!

Driving here to pick up or drop off people is a nightmare and gives me anxiety every time. They have a newer section at the Tom Bradley International Terminal that makes you walk for 20 minutes to get to your gate. I called this area the Annex. Plan ahead if you're flying international because you never know if you may end up having a really far gate assigned to your flight.
