Review for Vegetarian: Our third day in Anchorage and we had run out of places to eat(since vegetarian options were few). Luckily we found this place and there are two things I really loved about this place. Firstly, it's an all-women management and seemed like a family run business. Secondly, they were extremely friendly and warm, right from seating you to helping you with your order. Although most of the items were meat-based, they obliged to substituting it with a vegan option. Since they do not take online reservation and the place is quite busy, you may have to wait for a considerable time before you are seated. If you are visiting Alaska from another country, make sure you carry your currency note. The owner of this place is a philatelist. When you are here, notice the 10 rupee Indian note on the wall by the counter. I'll let you guess as to who contributed it :) read more

I've always liked this family owned diner. They are not currently offering curbside pick up at this time. I am handicapped and can't get around without a walker. The snow and ice make it especially difficult to pick up food from a restaurant. When I asked if they could bring my food out because of my disability they were very accommodating. The owner came out to the car herself because her two waitresses were pregnant and she didn't want them to have to come out on the ice. She was so warm and friendly and didn't make me feel bad for asking. "Mama" told me to ask anytime I need extra help. On top of the fantastic service, my omelet came out fresh and hot and delicious. This place is absolutely wonderful. I've lived here for the better part of my life and I've never been here once. My wife and kids were treated like family as soon as we walked through the door. The food was amazing and beyond expectation. Customer service was phenomenal. We had hot coffee refilled right on time as well as our waters. We had friendly conversation with the staff and manager, who by the way is a very nice lady. Needless to say we were pleased with the place from the food to the customer service and we will be regulars. A side note to my battles, they are military friendly and offer a discount. read more

I rarely give reviews, but our breakfast experience was so special it warrants the review. The owner Mama was so welcoming and engaging, restaurant was clean and comfortable, the waitresses so personable and attentive, and the food was incredibly delicious and plentiful. Such a pleasant surprise in this new Covid era of high prices, lousy service, substandard quantity and quality of food, and indifference to the customer. We'd normally try a different place for breakfast today while on vacation, but going back even though it's out of our way because we're not going to have a better experience, and we want to show our gratitude. This is "our" family diner and pretty much the go-to of anyone in the neighborhood. We love it here. It's run by a nice Albanian family. They remember us here, are fast and efficient, and the food is always tasty. Honestly, with all the gourmet burgers out there, I have yet to find one as satisfying and yummy as Southside burgers. I don't know what they do but it's always filling without being sickening or overly greasy. And the breakfast? My God, the breakfast. Just amazing. I always get the 2x2x2 and never leave hungry. My dad has been with us and says they have the best corned beef he's ever eaten. Oh and the soup is homemade every day and complimentary with a lot of dishes. Super yummy! I'm a huge fan of the chicken noodle. This place reminds me of a larger version of the diner counter I used to frequent as a kid - glad I can share that experience with my daughter. read more

Wow. Great service and friendly staff! Sirloin steak and eggs exactly as expected. Ultimate skillet- gone before I could try it. Looked good. The pancakes were different. Heavier. But tasty! Jr chicken strips- amazingly good. So were the fries. Came with a half a canned peach. The food is nothing fancy, just exactly what you would expect with great service! We definitely will be coming back given the proximity to our home. The amazing thing is I have lived in Alaska since 1971 and Anchorage since 1988 except a few years and I realized I had NEVER been down that part of Old Seward Highway in my life! They seemed to be doing fairly brisk business so I guess I was just slow to discover "that part of town."! read more

Me and my family walked in for breakfast the morning. After we were seated waitress came to our table 3 times. Not once in the 3 times she came to table did she get my wife's or kids drink order. Great breakfast for very reasonable prices. Everything I ordered here was just great. I also love the coffee here. The size of the portions is perfect, no need for doggy bags and you will not leave hungry either. The prices range from 9$ to about 16$. The staff is very friendly. Don't judge a girl by her wrinkles! I must admit I wanted to leave the moment we arrived. The restaurant is dirty and not well cared for. Booths are torn. It's in need of a deep clean and renovation but I was with others who were hungry so I acquiesced. To my utter amazement the food was fantastic. I had an omelette which was fluffy, light and very flavorful. My friends shared a club sandwich and raved. The fries were amazing. I inquired about the cinnamon rolls and they insisted I take one, no charge. The service was outstanding. I'd give them 5* except it needs a serious face lift! read more

Interesting experience at this place. This was the first restaurant we visited when we flew in to Anchorage. We were greater by a very friendly lady who seated us instantly (she is the three stars). We then waited for sometime before being asked what to drink. Then we still didn't get the coffee we asked for. Our orders were screwed up and the food was not the best ever. Unfortunately this place could have alot of potential if more of them were as happy to be there as the one. We love Southside Grill and have going there since before our 18 year old was born. When the kids were young, they called it "the fast place" because the food is always ready so quickly. I particularly like it because it's one of only two restaurants on this end of town where I can get grits for breakfast. Yesterday the Denver omelette was particularly light and fluffy. read more

We were drawn in by the high reviews and made it over for a brunch on a Saturday. It was a busy time with a packed parking lot. It was easy to tell that it is privately owned by family with lots of customers feeling comfortable like friends. Sometimes that is cool and sometimes annoying when you literally just stand there not being greeted waiting for a table. When we were finally noticed, it was an abrupt walk to a table and they left without even asking what we will have to drink. We waited an additional 15 minutes for a server. Our food came shortly after, but we could tell "friends" were definitely taken care of first no matter who was seated in what order. We were finIshed within a reasonable amount of time, but the server seemed anxious to turn over the table. We don't need any more friends, but it's frustrating to barely be served and then be shuffled out quickly. We've had warmer welcomes at chains unfortunately. I can't even comment on the food because the overall experience was spoiled by the attitude. It was breakfast I can get anywhere. That's about it. We haven't decided if we would consider going again. read more

Friendly and clean. Came in with a one year old for lunch. Wife loved the bun on her California burger. Comes with a cup of soup (no up charge for clam chowder) and a salad or fries. I had the monte christo with the beef barley soup. Both soups were excellent. Owner came around and made sure we were doing good. Severs were very attentive. Had a good high chair for a one year old. Typical diner look and feel. Family owned and operated, and I loved the vibe there. Everyone seemed happy, and the servers and owners worked alongside each other and it seemed very comfortable and friendly. Menu was typical minus the gyros on the menu. That is not often found at your typical diner, but it was made well, if a bit on the saucy side. I had the Texas burger, and it was delicious. It wasn't pretty, but it was really good. The fries were perfectly cooked, and crispy. The servers were always circling, refilling, quick and friendly. I did get a bit of sticker shock on the prices. Expensive. Probably too expensive to go back often, especially with a family of 4. I don't think anything on the menu was less than $11.00, and I would say the average for a burger or sandwich was $13.95, which seems high to me. I guess if I paying that much I want a little more ambiance. However, this place has no shortage of customers, and I can see why! read more
