Best Biscuits and Gravy

The BEST HASHBROWN IN THE WORLD. and the BEST WAFFLES EVER!!! & FAST SERVICE!! If you're visiting you have to try this place. It was my last 24 hours visiting in Anchorage and this place was suggested by a family member. So my wife and I decided to try it out. When we walked into the place, the door was open - literally. And it felt so nice inside. So homey. After bring greeted with a friendly smile we're directed to have a seat anywhere. It seemed just as quickly as e say down, our server came with coffee, which caught me off guard. But realistically, it was probably less than 2 minutes. She was nice. We both ordered the Hungry Man's breakfast. I had bacon, eggs hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy and i ordered Pecan waffle as well. Our food came, and I usually take a photo before I eat at a place I haven't and when it looks nicely presented. But I was hungry, forgot and also because it was a diner. As a Texan, I tried the biscuits and gravy first. They Did Not Disappoint. 2 Big delicious biscuits bathing in a bowl of gravy. The biscuit were warm, soft, fluffy on the inside, thin layer of crisp on the outside. The gravy was definitely from scratch. It was so so creamy, with just the right spice, I saw bits of meat chunks as well. My thought after one bite was, This is How I should Eat my Biscuits and Gravy from now on. This is what all my biscuits n gravy will be compared to. Next up i had to try a bite of hashbrowns. With a little bit of ketchup drizzled, I tried the one food item that would be known as the standard for all things Hashbrown. Potatoe strips loosely packed together creating a layer of perfectly golden crispy goodness on top and bottom with a tender center of starch. Like the kind you'd see as advertised on any tv, movie or the package of any golden brown hashbrown. Except this was a dream come true and a dream that I never knew I had. These were Perfect. I've had a lot of hashbrowns in my lifetime and from many different places around the country. But this is The BEST in the WORLD on how it was done right. The WAFFLES was next, it too, would the New standard of all waffles sounds be. It was the perfect golden brown with the perfect recipe for a crisp exterior and a waffles fluffy interior of sweetness, served with hot syrup. After my wife tried a bit of the waffle she had also mentioned on how good they were. The bacon was perfectly cooked. And my eggs were beautifully over easy. I ate it with the Signature Southside Sauce which was very good!! Better than Chalula. When I went to pay, I was met with such friendliness. After the lady from behind the counter asked me how was everything I had to tell her, she needed to know... BEST HASHBROWNS IN THE WORLD... BEST WAFFLES EVER. ... she gave me a high five and a handful of candy and told me she goes by Mama, which seemed so fitting. My wife added a side of pancakes with her order and those pancakes were so pillowy soft, moist and melted in my mouth. It was such a nice contrast to the crispy hashbrowns. I told her I was visiting from Texas but that I'd be back during my next trip when I pick up my wife and daughter after Hurricane season is over for us. She also sent me home with a small bottle of their signature house sauce which I thought was the nicest thing ever!! Now I have another thing to look forward to on my trips to a Anchorage. "Best Hashbrowns and Waffles in the World" "Best Biscuits and Gravy" Its saddening though, that from that point on... all my breakfast or brunches containing hashbrowns, waffles and biscuits would be compared to this one meal. Heck, anything with potatoes, waffles and biscuits. For Anyone Visiting Anchorage, you have to try it. For those living in Anchorage, your so lucky to have this place and Mama!

Chicken Fried Steak

Perfect spot for brunch! Great fluffy pancakes and delicious chicken fried steak! Good service and old fashion diner style food. Only thing is that if they're busy, they would do anything in their power to kick you out without verbally asking you hahaha. They will clear out your table 110% until you feel uncomfortable and leave. So I wouldn't go there if you wanna catch up with a friend or wanna have a peaceful conversation brunch. Other than, it's a good restaurant

Always wonderful to try a new spot and find one that's incredible!!! South side Grill did not disappoint. Big helpings, friendly staff, quick service. It was standing room only when we arrived and Momma had us seated in no time. Our new breakfast go to, for sure.

Potato Salad was good and sandwich was tasty too.

Service was very friendly. Food was above average. Love to support small businesses when I travel.

Classic American breakfast!

Classic no frills dining, very fast service, good food, nothing incredible but if you're looking for good solid breakfast fare this is the place for you. Big portions offering things like French toast as a side replacement! No views or anything special just the bare necessities. Prices were reasonable as well. As an aside I had the crab Benedict and while good the crab could have been firmer/more cooked, and the home fries were maybe a touch under seasoned for my taste. I may go with the hashed browns next time.

Ambiance is perfect clean old school diner. Good came out FAST, hot and delicious. Reindeer sausage was amazing. Service was prompt and helpful. Definitely use the southside hot sauce!

Triple Berry Cheesecake waffle

Omlet, pancakes, and Reindeer Sausage

Loved this breakfast joint! Omelet was huge and filled with crispy bacon and melted cheese. The pancakes were fluffy and warm and the reindeer sausage was perfectly seared. 10/10!

Fantastic breakfast food! It really doesn't look like much from the outside but I promise, you'll walk out a happy customer! It seems to be a local favorite. There were a lot of regulars the morning I was there. We began with fresh coffee and went straight to ordering our food. We wanted to try a lil bit of everything so we ordered a Western Omelette (ham, grilled onions, green pepper and cheese, $15.25) with a side of pancakes (+$0.00), the Pigs in the Blanket (3 sausage links wrapped with pancakes, literally, $13.45) with a side of home fries ($5.50) and gravy ($2.95). All of it was PHENOMENAL. The omelette was FAT. Generously stuffed with the goods and cooked to tasty perfection. A whole lot of flavor, 100% recommend. The home fries were so yummy. Lots of garlic flavor and crispy fried delish! The real winner was the Pigs in a Blanket! They were so damn good, especially with the apple pie filling that's served with it (yes! Actual pie filling. It's heavenly).

Grabbing Lunch!

Classic Diner on the Southside! You come in it says wait to be seated but they typically say grab a booth or table wherever. It was closer to noon so we ordered lunch! Judy got the Philly w/Mushrooms and I got a Texas 1/2 Lb Burger both with fries! First thing that came out was chicken noodle soup! It's complimentary with a dine-in sandwich order. Very cool! Soup was so good! Just a cup but was a great start! Then the sandwiches hit the table! Fries OMG! Sandwiches big and delicious. Judy was happy I opted for this today. It's got a wide variety of breakfasts and lunches! It's a Diner at Heart! Has a great Heart!

I, as a kid growing up in England, saw these American diners on tv, and we didn't have such things…read morewhere I lived in my tiny little village, and oh how I longed for the diner experience - sitting at the counter, having a breakfast and coffee, "just like in the movies" And, so of course, when I moved here at the ripe old age of 41, there, shining in all its chrome beauty, was the epitome of all my teenage fantasies beckoning me inside, to pop my diner cherry. As yet, I have still not sat on one of the counter stools, but they are there! Just like on tv! And I, who has lived here now for almost 14 years feel such pride in our beautiful shiny diner, which in my humble opinion, is better than any I saw on tv, because it's metal. I challenge any movie maker (pfft, like that gonna happen) who might be planning a movie based in Alaska, and needing a 50's style diner, to find anything so beautifully retro, even in the Lower 48, and probably needing very little styling to make it meet their vintage needs. It has booths, it has counter stools, it has a lovely floor, great art on the walls. Anyway, I digress. We've been coming here for years, ever since it was still called City Diner. They have a good, large, wide ranging menu, covering breakfasts lunches and dinners. I've never had anything bad here. Service is great, and you're almost always seated immediately. It's always busy, but never seems chaotic if you catch my drift. I love that if you order a soda, they bring out the soda, as well as a jug full of said soda, so you can have top ups. Not that I drink loads of soda, I just think it's a nice touch. Today I got a BLT, husband got the Lika chicken wrap, I got fries with mine, and he got tots. We both got coffee, in a good old fashioned diner mug. They are always THAT style of mug, you know the one I mean, kinda got a slim waist, unlike myself. Food came out unbelievably quickly, I was gonna give 4 stars, but I just changed it to 5, cos you know what? Yeah, it's not fine dining, or an amazing dining room, linen tablecloths etc, but it is exceptional for what it is. So it's a 5 star diner. My BLT. Can I just say, this is the best BLT I've had in quite a while, and I get them a lot. Bacon was plentiful and the exact right crispiness, lettuce was fresh, not limp, tomato sliced decently thickly, and I'd normally pick it out, as I find it bland, and doesn't really enhance the sandwich for me, but I ate every bit of it. That bacon man, it was so good. So flavorful. The fries too, crisp and hot. He got that chicken wrap based on my recommendation, as I'd had it on my previous visit. He said it was moist and juicy, and he ate it all. The coffee's very good too. I don't drink a lot of coffee, but our server came round offering refills which I didn't have, but not because it didn't taste good. The worst thing I can say about this place is, I find it difficult to choose what I want to eat, as they have some very desirable options. bathrooms are very clean, and echo the 50's diner style, with the same flooring as throughout the dining room, and black and white tiling on the walls. Often some places dining rooms might be clean, but then the bathrooms are not kept clean - almost an afterthought. I'll continue to frequent Sami's diner, it's one of my go-to lunch spots.

I'm not sure if this place is under new management/ownership or what but...things have massively…read moreimproved. There is still no jam on the table, but service is much better regarding the coffee refills. The menu prices are affordable, as they should be at a diner. Service was snappy. I got the steak and eggs and it came with toast and taters and everything was perfectly cooked to my specs. The vibe in here is great, it's unlike any other Anchorage breakfast spot. The real reason to come here though: it doesn't usually have a line/wait time, even on the weekend.

Fabulous Meal! The UAA Culinary Students knocked this meal…read moreout of the park. I had the Filet Surf and Turf. My Filet was cooked and seasoned to perfection. I would say my steak would have given Whiskey and Ramen a run for their money. A true medium rare and juicy. Nearly tender enough to cut with a fork. The Scallops. I don't usually care for scallops but I will say there was a perfect sear and they were not over cooked. Sweet Potato Gnocchi was really good and the Gorgonzola Sauce was balanced flavorful and I will be trying to replicate it soon. My son enjoyed a flank steak, delicious, a good sear and just enough lime to enhance the experience. We skipped the desserts I have to address the prices which are ridiculously low. I hear reservations fill up quick so watch their website.

I do think some of the items were on the pricier side for what you are receiving as well as considering it's a student run lab, and not an operating restaurant. Although the restaurant is in more of a cafeteria setting thru do a very nice job of making it feel more high end with their table settings & fresh florals. The students are also dressed very professionally, and the menu is a great selection of higher end items. My favorite part of the meal were the desserts (Lady Palmer & Black cherry chocolate cake). They were exemplary quality, and I feel were restaurant ready. For our entrees I ordered the duck breast, and black cod. I really enjoyed the basil & pea puree that came with the cod, and for the duck breast I thought it was seasoned well though I would've preferred it a little less well done. For appetizers I ordered prawn fritters & a bread plate. I really enjoyed the different components of the bread plate; my favorite being the whipped honey feta. The fritters were tasty, but I wish they had more prawn pieces in them. This restaurant is a learning experience for the students so you should not go into this meal expecting 5 star perfection, but it's a great way to get involved in helping to educate the culinary students in a real life setting. The meal includes comment cards that they ask you fill out, which will really help the students improve. Lucy's was a very fun & unique experience, and I hope to be able to get a reservation again next year!
