I came across this restaurant while traveling through Louisiana. This is one of those places that feels like everyone knows each other. The vibe was upbeat and the service was great! There was a game playing and most of the people were cheering as they watched. The food was good and fresh overall. One if my table mates stated that they wished the seafood platter had more seasoning. Aside from that each dish was a solid 4/5. Please see the attached images. They do have a veterans discount. Oh yes this restaurant was owned by a veteran which is evident by all of the decor. I loved seeing all of the decor. Our total after the discount was $60.07. The do have a cash and non cash price. Give this place a try if you're in the area.

Nice spot to grab lunch! It has a touristy feel but in a good way. The atmosphere was fun and lively. The menu is extensive so lots of choices for all tastes. I got the pork sandwich that had bbq sauce Swiss cheese and coleslaw on Texas toast. It was delicious! We also ordered the alligator balls, which consists of cheese, jalapeños and I assume ground gator, served with this spicy mayo sauce. It was good and the sauce was good but very spicy! Nice meal, great service!

While doing an overnight stay in the area we were looking for a place to have dinner and found Southside Cafe - after arriving and finding the parking lot full we quickly came to the conclusion that this is a local favorite. We were fortunate to get seated immediately without a wait. Our server Leah greeted us and welcomed us to the restaurant while handing us menus and asked for our beverage order, there are so many delicious options to choose from. We started out with a cup of chicken and sausage gumbo and french onion soup both were delicious although the gumbo was a little thicker than I'm used too it is something I would order again, the french onion soup was amazing. As busy as the restaurant was Leah provided outstanding service she checked on all her customers to ensure everyone was well taken care of. We ordered fried catfish fillets and a hamburger steak with mashed potatoes and brown gravy both were delicious and there was plenty to share and still have enough to take back to the camp ground. This is a great restaurant although the place was packed it wasn't as loud as we thought it might be after entering near the bar. The parking lot was a little chaotic and only dimly lit so navigating was a little challenging after dinner service. All in all we loved our experience here and definitely would return when back in the area...

Start with the crabmeat stuffed mushrooms. They are topped with parm and pair oh so nicely with a Bloody Mary from the bar. But....only eat one because they are huge and you need to save room for the gumbo (seafood or chicken and sausage) and the fried shrimp and oysters and the muffaletta! Worth the 30 minute wait and the drive from Texas via Orlando! LOL

Southside Cafe (Slidell, LA) 3154 Pontchartrain Drive, Slidell, LA 70458 Visited: January 19, 2026 Southside Cafe was a great spot for a Monday night in Slidell. The place was packed, the ambiance was excellent, and there were TVs everywhere, making it a perfect place to catch a game and enjoy a lively crowd. Service was very good--friendly, attentive, and most importantly, everything came out quickly, even with how busy they were. Food-wise, the highlight of the meal was easily the red beans and rice... a strong 9/10 for me. Full of flavor and exactly what I was hoping for. I did try the 1/2 and 1/2 po'boy (half fried shrimp and half fried oysters), and while it was decent overall, I was a little disappointed in the bread. In my opinion, it just wasn't up to the standard you expect in south Louisiana, so I'd rate the po'boy about a 6/10. To top it off, I had a Bloody Mary ($8.00) and it was excellent--one of the better ones I've had in a while. Overall, this was a very nice experience, and I'd absolutely come back again the next time I'm in town.

After the great morning spent touring the bayou we felt like we needed to stop and grab something to eat before heading back to New Orleans. We found this place online and it had some great reviews so we swung by. There were 8 of us so we had to wait about 40 minutes to be seated inside, but there were some nice tables to wait at outside, so we just grabbed a drink and relaxed a bit. I ordered a ln espresso martini which was delicious. The drinks were very well poured and amazing. I ordered the strawberry spinach salad and fried eggplant and the food was fresh and very large portions. Great prices and great service. Everyone else at the table was able to take full advantage of all the wonderful food that was available (I was limited being vegetarian). Huge sandwiches. Huge bowls of gumbo. Wonderful drinks. Fun decor and cool theme. The potato salad was amazing also (although I think there was bacon in there that I was not aware of but caught)! I would 100% recommend this place and we will definitely be back. 9.1/10

Portions were HUGE with generous servings of protein - Service: 4/5, a bit slow but likely because of the crowds - Parking: plenty of lot parking Stopped at southside cafe as we were passing through Louisiana on a road trip. Even though we got there around 8pm there were plenty of families/sports teams celebrating. Waitress was nice and answered our many questions, and the food came out within 20min (fresh!). The tuna salad was giant with a hefty slab of fish- a bit salty but otherwise great. The fresh fried mushrooms were juicy and satisfying (if you like mushrooms, that is). We also shared the seafood platter which was honestly enough for 3 people- my favorite parts were the softshell crab (2) and oysters. The classic BLT was also heaped with healthy servings of turkey and beef. French onion soup was good with huge croutons, but not our favorite item on the table. I could tell everything was fried fresh and came out piping hot! Good ambiance and good food.

We stop in Slidell often on our way home and generally slip into a chain and get back on the road. We have been missing out. It was busy for lunch on the day after Thanksgiving, but we were seated immediately. We ordered the tuna steak sandwich, sirloin burger with cheese, and a small order of onion rings and straws. The tuna sandwich was great. We were surprised that it was not a whole tuna steak but sliced; still the flavor wasn't affected at all. My burger was perfectly cooked and juices ran the whole time I ate it. A generous portion of cheddar cheese was melted on the burger along with a crispy slice on the side... yum! The onion rings with homemade remoulade sauce was perfection. The sauce had a welcome bite to it. We are ready for our next stop through to further explore the menu! read more

It's my first time to visit this town of Slidell so I checked Yelp and saw great reviews. I guess I'm too spoiled for having a good meal especially seafood in Hawaii and in SanDiego So here's my food trip experience here at Southside cafe l, The first one I ordered was recommended by my server, she said the tuna fish grill was very good but when I tried to cut it was very tough! The texture was microwaved fish and when I started eating the fish it's so rubbery!!! So I had to exchange it and get the blackened catfish which is better because I can actually cut it and it's a lot softer that the tuna fish. But there's nothing special about it at all The flavor was just okay. The one that I enjoyed was the spinach dip and their nachos were very good. My curiosity takes me there because of the reviews and their slogan it says " A Slidell Tradition since 1991" so it's 30 Yrs old restaurant already. I guess I need to check other menu :-) Anyway! Thanks for a good service and maybe I will comeback again to give another dish a try :-) read more

We went here two times while in town because the food was so good. We had the seafood gumbo, shrimp & oyster po'boy, stuffed mushrooms, and smoked tuna dip appetizer, and the seafood platter for two. The seafood platter was huge, and offered all tge seafood option. Their breading was light and crispy. The seafood gumbo was wonderful, as was the po'boy. Our favorite item, surprisingly, was the smoked tuna dip!! I thought it would taste like tuna salad, and when our friend ordered it I was skeptical....but loved it so much more that the stuffed mushrooms. Whenever I see the French fry poboy on a menu, I know I have stumbled on a true New Orleans restaurant. The menu reminds me of old times. I am picky about my bread pudding but was confident after eating everything else that it would be wonderful and I was right. The boat drink reminds me of something I would have gotten at port of call years ago. Whenever I come to town, I make sure to eat here. I am transported back to happy times from years ago. It's a good stopping point if you are driving through the state. It's a bit noisy in the main room, but there are off side tables that are quieter. It includes a menu of lots of FRIED foods. And they are descent. I ordered an appetizer of the mushrooms stuffed with crab meat and since I have lived in Baltimore, I know better. They were not very good and I ended up leaving most. History

Established in 1991.

Founded in 1991 Southside Café opened at the current location on Pontchartrain Drive. The building originally opened in 1987 as a local donut franchise by Dan and Sharon DeBlanc. Expanded in 1994 to almost double the capacity, Southside had slowly grown into favorite meeting spot. It also had become one of the most patriotic places to eat. Fueled by the rising patriotism brought about by the Iraqi war, and Dan being a former Marine Corps Helicopter pilot, the restaurant soon became a type of meeting place for hungry patriots to eat, drink and congregate. With the overwhelming support of the community over the last 20 plus years, Dan, Sharon and Chris have strived to provide that comfortable local joint, were you celebrate birthdays, graduation or just having a great meal. With a staff and customers that includes over three generations; Southside Café is looking forward to the next 20 years! Don't Ever Give Up!

They have pool tables and darts and karaoke nights every week. Nothing fancy here, but we always enjoy ourselves. They have a decent selection of local brews on tap. The usual bottled beers are priced nicely. The frozen daiquiris are potent, reasonably priced, and they offer some original unique flavors. The greatest appeal for us is the food. Wow! The menu is long so we still haven't had a chance to try everything. They offer some creative and local items in addition to the usual "bar food" - burgers, sandwiches, wings, etc. Even on that stuff, the quality is first-rate. Try the Sea Dog or the Twisted Gator Fries or the wings. The fried mushrooms are not so great, but the fried green beans are very good. They scale back to a limited menu late at night so not everything is available all the time. The bartenders and staff are friendly. They do not have servers doing table service. Instead, you order at the bar and they bring your food out to you. It works just fine when they are quiet, but on a loud karaoke night you might wind up shouting your order across to the bartender. They are good with daiquiri questions and will give you a little taste of the frozen stuff to help you decide which flavor you want. Even on busy nights the food comes out quickly. Highly recommended. "I need to come in here more!!"

i have to say i have a bit of conflicting thoughts on this resturant. i still remember when it first opened it's tiny little door with the drive through still attached to the side from the previous buisness. i've watched the tragic and not so tragic up's and down's of it exsistance. when it first opened i remeber $4 cheese sticks and LOTS of em at that. those times are long gone and with the new improved southside recently has been built. where the old once had stood before Katina. the atmosphere still incredibly fun and layed back. it's famous wednesday night bike night packed as ever. the food still pretty good. not great but good. i did happen to get food poinsoning from the pontchartrain pig during my pregnacy. the waitstaff always looks busy like little ants to anticipate your every need. although the prices are resonable. i don't suggest their poboys, to costly for the small minisucle things and normally not that good. SO,GREAT ATMOSPHERE BUT AS FOR THE FOOD I"VE HAD BETTER! please bring a sweater if you go. it gets REALLY cold in there. read more

We had a fantastic experience at Southside Cafe! I went with my husband and our 17-year-old son, and it was the perfect spot for all of us. The ambiance was lively and welcoming, and they have a really nice area to sit and relax while waiting to be called for a table. The food was outstanding! The hamburger patties were large, juicy, and cooked perfectly. The homemade potato salad tasted fresh and had that classic, comforting flavor you hope for but rarely find outside of hame made stuff mom used to make. The grilled tuna steak was especially impressive--tender, flavorful, and cooked just right. The French onion soup was rich and delicious with great depth of flavor, and the pot roast sandwich was incredible--tender meat, perfectly seasoned, and truly satisfying. Everything we tried was excellent, and you can tell they put care into both the food and the overall experience. If you are anywhere near Slidell, are hungry, patriotic and/or a member of our armed forces, this is a mandatory stop. I'm from New Orleans but had a meeting in Slidell tonight. I'm delighted that I stopped. The menu is expansive with soups, salads. po-boys, gumbo, pasta, burgers and other specialties. I started with an Old Fashioned which Jenn made. It was excellent and the largest OF I've had anywhere in the country. The Irish channel gumbo, a bathtub size bowl with chicken and sausage gumbo, seafood gumbo and potato salad, caught my eye. It was wonderful and was a treat to the palate. I probably should have stopped there but decided to finish it off with a small hit sausage po-boy which I thoroughly enjoyed. I heard the deserts were very good but had to pass unless they were going to rolll me out in a wheelbarrow. This crowd was energetic for a Wednesday night. After travelling all over the country for almost 5 years, I just can't get the great food from the Southside Café out of my mind. The Gumbo is the best I've had, and their Mufaletta Sandwich was unbelievable. Soup and Sandwich combo with gumbo and Mufaletta is enough for two adults. Top the experience off with a tall cold premium adult beverage, and you're about as close to food perfection as you will ever get. These folks were devastated by Katrina, and they were one of the first restaurants to open back up after the storm. A good thing because there were thousands of hungry people needing good food while the hard work rebuilding was being done. To make it even better, their prices are great. Had dinner at the Southside cafe on a recent Saturday night. We had 4 adults and 2 children. My opinion is that the food is average. It tasted fine but very light on seasoning. We had gumbo, shrimp po-boys and fish po-boys. Food came out fairly quick. Service was a little below average, server did not write our order down just listened to it as given. One of the kids did not get what they had ordered, and we were missing an extra order of fries when food was delivered. ( maybe she should have written the order down)Then we had trouble finding our server to get items corrected. She was more interested in watching the game on TV than serving us. We ordered the eggplant and onion strings and fries, although all were delicious I must say the egg plant was the best I've ever eaten. I love this Restaurant. I espically love the decor. To honor our Military in the fashion that the owner has done is incredible. The atmosphere is perfect. The staff is wonderful. They always make you feel welcomed. One of my favorite sandwiches is the Big Mo Jama. I can never it it all but the portion is so nice that I can make a couple of sandwiches out of. To me that's perfect espically for the next day and the Gumbo is wonderful. It taste like my grandmothers. Which she always told me that she puts alot of love in it that's what makes it perfect. This was the first time that I've been to this Cafe and it is one of the best ones I've ever been to. The staff are always there to help for anything you may need and the food is outstanding. I had a double stacker hamburger with Swiss cheese and a salad and it was very filling and very delicious. I recommend this restaurant to anyone who has an appetite and not much money because they are very reasonable on the price and they will fill you up with each plate. I look forward to returning to this Cafe in the future which I recommend and will recommend to all my friends. read more

My infrequent trips to the New Orleans area always result in a trek to find the best seafood served by good folks. Southside Cafe was recommended by the hotel's front desk clerk (Nikki) and she was right on. I had a combo basket of fish and shrimp and both were outstanding. However, the surprise of the trip was their GUMBO. Wahoo. It was spicy and full of the stuff that makes seafood gumbo better near the Gulf. Service was astounding. Everything was incredible. I'm very rarely blown away by a restaurant. The portions are huge and delicious. The seafood mufalletta was huge and delicious. The service was great and fast. It's difficult to express how great this place is. The icing on the top is that the place is filled with Military memorabilia, portraits of service members and model planes. I have had meals on a takeout basis. The plates are hardy and will surely satisfy any hunger. I had a fried pork chop and red beans for my last trek out for a little take out. It was excellent, tasty and satisfying. I have dined in once and had a seafood platter fit for a king. Every piece was fried to perfection and I ended up taking some home. Ok, so this place is very hit or miss. I est here a lot as it's right next to my work But some days the food is great and some days it's really not good at all. More so the Gumbo for sure.
