Not sure what I was expecting to find, but I was pleasantly surprised and I had a nice time. I have lived in Slidell for years and never managed to eat here until recently. It is tucked into a little strip shopping center with a Pizza Hut and a Jujitsu school. The parking lot is very dark and there is no signage out by the road so it's difficult to see until you are right on top of it. I was watching for it and still missed the first parking lot entrance in the dark and almost went into the ditch. Crisis averted. I made it OK. Inside, the restaurant was spacious and open and it felt a lot bigger than it is. It was not busy, so there was no wait for a table. Wood paneling on the walls, county music playing, it was comfortable inside. The servers were friendly and took my order right away. My food came out quickly and everything was correct. I had an oyster po-boy and it was as good as any I have had around here. It was a little pricey for what I got, but it wasn't overpriced either. The price of oysters fluctuates wildly, so there's no way to really know the price ahead of time unless you call. They had a number of daily specials advertised on various boards around the restaurant. I need to go back sometime to try some of those. Overall, no complaints. Food was good, the place was comfortable, the servers were friendly. Highly recommended. Solid four stars. read more

While passing thru area ate here twice. First stop had a special, Prime Rib. That, and sides, prepared to perfection. Second trip for lunch had hamburger steak & chicken pasta- again nicely prepared. Service both stops good, price reasonable- a great place. read more

First time here and we were pleasantly surprised. Driving pass and just pulled into the parking lot. Not real busy on this particular Friday night, so that was a plus. Nice size place with a bar. We were greeted and seated right away. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We ordered just entrees and a couple drinks on special. We had the whole fried flounder and seafood platter. Both entrees came with a side and a salad. We got the house and a ceaser salad and fries. All of the seafood came out hot and fresh and was seasoned well. The flounder crust was the right amount of crisp and the fish was white and fluffy. The seafood platter was equally flavorful. It came with catfish, shrimp, oysters and a stuffed crab, all fried nice and golden. The stuffed crab was a surprise bonus, very delicious stuffed inside the actual crab shell. We washed it down with a traditional Margarita and the special of the day, a blueberry lemon drop. I think we spent about $57 for everything before tip. Well worth it. Great food, great price. On the way home from a stay in New Orleans I chose this lunch spot over its local competitors using yelp. It was a tough choice but definitely a good one. First the negative; the gumbo was just average and the mixed veggies served with my entree were overly cooked and not seasoned, but that's not why I came. My wife's blacken gulf fish was perfectly seasoned and cooked. My fried oysters were much better than any I got in New Orleans; lightly breaded, seasoned and flash fried. The $3.95 bread pudding was short on presentation but what it lacked in price and visualization it made up for in taste. The service was cordial and prompt since there wasn't a crowd. This is a place frequented by our Slidell relatives. They like the fried catfish most and are grateful for sweet potato fries. I am not a fan of their catfish, it's in strips rather filets. The broiled or blackened flounder and trout are better to me. Have had them fried , but dry. The best plus is their green salad with homemade dressings which are excellent. Like other places, the drinks are overpriced and the tea is very diluted. The staff are excellent, all of them worth big tips. Don't order the crab cake unless you like the tasty bread stuffing (good)and the hunt for a flake of crab meat. A long long time ago in a previous life, I lived in Slidell, LA for about for about 4 years and in NOLA for another 6. While I lived here, I learned a few things about where to go and what to eat! Vera's is tucked away in a little strip mall off the beaten path. It's not a place tourists would ever find. But let me tell you the food is exceptional. I started out with a cup of seafood gumbo. It was good, but not great. The choice for dinner was either the fresh grilled speckled trout or the fried whole flounder. The trout was amazing. It came with the fresh veggies, and they were perfection. Now you also about the other dish in the photos. My comrade ordered the Alfredo and raved about it, I ordered the seafood platter and my boss order a blackened fish plate. I haven't been here in a couple of years at least. The batter they cook the shrimp in is NOT the same, nor is the onion rings. Very disappointing. No wonder why the shrimp poboy is $12.95. It's not the same fried batter. Personally I would prefer to be charged the credit card fee and the extra condiments than to have not so great food. Service was good until the end where we waited a while to ask and get the check along with a waitress that walked away when I was going to ask for things. We don't want to run the server and we want to not wait as long so could have waited to get a list of requests. She got the boxes, but waited a while to get the check which is more important than the box in that you'd give them at the same time NOT make the customer wait. I am assuming she waited to write up the check that it took so long. Still tipped 16% cause I made her go back, because I forgot something. I give for excellent service 50% and upwards. As far as the service goes, I was mostly pissed at after being offered a box, she was literally walking away instead of making sure we didn't want anything else. It's like they don't want to work. I asked for bag, check, box, and 2 to-go refills. Why servers walk off so quickly here as I had this happen years ago here with another server? All you are doing is getting your tip lowered by just asking about 1 thing to 1 person in a party of 2. Stay put to see if the customers would like anything else like dessert. Took too long to come by to be able to ask for your check. It wasn't that busy. As I said, food isn't the same. I won't be back because the batter is low quality now. I remember the shrimp being crusty not soft flat. It's disappointing because I loved my shrimp poboys here. I knew it was different when I saw our onion rings. Today I have to give them a 3 star because of the food. Food: The pasta dish with the catfish and shrimp was conflicting. The fish and the shrimp was tasty, seasoned really well, but the pasta was not pleasant tasting. It had no taste, kinda watered down taste. This will not get ordered again. I love their chargrilled oysters, but today they were almost burnt. Not buttery but they gave extra bread that was drenched in butter so it made the bread a little cold. I really liked the atmosphere. I had the special seafood ravioli and they were delicious. The bread was the most amazing that I have ever had, melt in your moth good. We also had the chicken strip and it was an enormous serving with really good ranch. Vera's Seafood is currently located in an unassuming location in a strip mall. Doesn't look like much from the outside at all. However, once you go in, you'll feel like you have reached the dockside. The maritime decor suits their menu, which as the name would suggest, features fantastic seafood dishes. I am told that Vera's was once located right on the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain. Unfortunately, flooding devastated this original restaurant. After this occurred, Vera's set up shop in its current strip mall location, and just remained there. So, seafood is the focus, and all of it is fresh and well prepared. The daily special is always a good choice, and sometimes includes my personal favorite, the stuffed flounder! Many people enjoy their shrimp dishes, fried, grilled, or in a po-boy. All are excellent choices! I also recommend their scallops... Vera's is one of the best seafood choices in Slidell, and is well worth the short drive from the downtown area. Don't let the plain exterior fool you, there's a great restaurant hiding in this strip mall. read more

Cute eclectic decor lots bigger on the inside than it looks from the outside. Great service! They were very sweet with my toddler that was being fussy from the long car ride. Food was wonderful! We had alligator sausage appetizer I wish I knew where they sourced it because it was fantastic. We also had the blackened snapper and kids burger. The kids burger was massive and my toddler loved it but it's definitely plenty of food. The blackened snapper was tasty and a sizable filet. Came in last minute on a road trip. The food was absolutely delicious, especially the cat fish pontchartrain. My mom was skeptical with the special of a fried fish with a creamy crab sauce but she said was amazing. My granddaughter said her grilled cheese was so good she wanted to take the cook home lol. The service was top-notch. Our waiter, Ashley, was very friendly and attentive. The other waitresses were very nice and talkative even though it was closing time when we were leaving. The last time I was in Vera's it was somewhere around 1978 - when they were in the original location on the Lake. A lot of memories tied to that. Stopped in today and had a snack/lunch so it's not a full on review. Had the classic seafood gumbo that was solidly good. A side of hush puppies was nice. I would probably go 3.75 on my review if Yelp allowed for such subtleties. The current system forces you on a regular basis to always feel like you're lying a little bit on your ratings. You either feel like your unkindly voting one star lower or undeservedly voting one star higher. That being said - I went for the 4 because - thanks for the memories. It was okay for what it was your usual seafood fare. The gumbo was the best part of the meal. It had a smoky taste to it and was absolutely wonderful. The server we had stayed on top of drinks and checking on us. The food was hot and fresh, but the shrimp was just a bit overcooked. We ate because we were hungry and it was there. I read the reviews and they said it was good so it may have been an off day that we went. We got the lunch specials and they are worth the price you pay for them. Checked out the restrooms and they are not exactly wheelchair friendly. You could possibly get one in the restroom but you would have to do quite a bit of angling of the chair. Today the food was abysmal. My first visit, five weeks ago was delicious. What happened in five weeks? I ordered the shrimp basket both times. The shrimp today were small and covered in a very thick bland batter and overwhelmed the flavor of the shrimp. I was so thick that I had to pull it off. The French fries were OK. Nothing special with frozen fries that are a bit under cooked. I also ordered the gumbo on my first visit and again today. Huge difference. The first time it was one of the best cups of gumbo I've had in awhile. Today it had an odd scorched and bitter taste. The absolute worst was the bread pudding. It looked like they scraped up the last little bits in the pan and half-a$$ed warmed it. Looked like messy garbage and tasted like it was left over a few days. The manager/owner? gave me $4 off for the bread pudding. I didn't ask for it, just complained that it wasn't something that should be served to customers. Today was my last visit.
