First, the service was great and thats the only reason for the two stars. This was my first visit in 4-5 years. When I lived in the area, we would go at least one Friday or Saturday a month. Since it was the first Friday of Lent, we decided to make the trek and looked forward to what we have always thought was the best catfish in the area. We both ordered the fried catfish as it has always been our usual. When the server placed it on the table, I mentioned that it looked different but maybe they are using a new fish fry mix. So I put some of the fish on my plate with some of their delicious coleslaw and hush puppies. When I picked up the fish, it was as if I could barely squeeze it and oil would come flowing out of the fish. So I took the napkin and tried soaking some of it off and tasted it. It wasn't bad fish but the taste was nothing but oily. I couldn't eat any more of the fish so I ate the Cole slaw, a few of the fries and the hush puppies. My husband ate more of the fish after soaking up the grease but I just couldn't. The only thing I could think was maybe it was old grease but we got there 15 minutes after they opened. Then I thought maybe the grease wasn't hot enough when they put the fish in because that would definitely cause the fish to be greasy. But it didn't taste good either. I did not bring this up to the server only because I didn't want to make a scene. Hopefully someone else brought it to their attention. Best fish house in Pearl River County! I cannot eat seafood however my family loves it! I grew up on this restaurant as a child. I get the fried chicken tenders with all the fixings, the coleslaw and hush puppies are the best I've ever had. Everything is seasoned to perfection, and the staff is above and beyond. Whole fish (all you can eat) coleslaw, and hush puppies to die for! That's my all the time order. My mom always ordered gumbo and a small catfish filet. My mother in law and her sister both had shrimp platters. My husband (bless his soul) had the same as I do. My three boys and 4 grands are difficult to get fed. But they do and it's a standard treat when they come to visit. Service is great considering the crowd. The ambiance is true southern catfish wonderland!!! From the outside it looks like a major hole-in-the- wall kinda place. It is.... Picnic style seating in open room, with two much smaller areas to the side. Food was good. Extremely fried- down to the pickles. Portions were large enough to feed people who actually want to eat. Down fall is that they only accept cash or personal checks. Who carried checks anymore? Fish was all you can eat for $14ish. Very hot, fresh and crispy. Little light on any seasoning in the batter for me. But that seems to be the case everywhere. Could not find a current menu anywhere online so we expected $.75 per year of age up to 12 for kids all you can eat. That's what the only menus online said. I have been visiting this place for about as long as I can remember. It is right up there on the list of places I bring foreign friends. The gumbo is mediocre. Don't order it if you want a real representation of gumbo. I will send you up the road to my mama's house. The all you can eat catfish, hushpuppies, fries, and slaw, coupled with a true sweet tea provide a good example of southern cuisine at its best. My grandparents swore by this place, and my son eats here. I consider it a part of my heritage. The hushpuppies are sweet, melt-in-your-mouth balls of heavenly delight. I judge all my hushpuppies by Cuevas' standards. When I was a child, Mr. Cuevas used to pass by all the tables and make sure you were ok. He set a great example for southern hospitality and genuine interest in the satisfaction of his customers. If you love all-you-can-eat amazing thin-sliced fried catfish, Cuevas is as good as it gets. We've been making the drive from New Orleans to Picayune, MS for about 25 years once or twice a year to go to Cuevas and we love it. For about $10, you get all-you-can-eat catfish, fries, hush puppies, and cole slaw. Everything tastes great. The service is a 10. We always have a great waitress who is extremely helpful and nice, and they are always stopping by to refill your drink and ask if you'd like more catfish or sides. It only takes about 45-50 minutes to get there from New Orleans, and it is always worth it. They have strange hours, and are closed on certain days. We usually go on Saturdays for dinner, and I think they are only open for dinner. Also, it is cash only. I last went about 3 months ago, and will be heading back soon. read more

She got a 99c dessert- banana pudding- but said it tasted more like package pudding than anything (but, it was only 99c yo). Seriously was some of the best hushpuppies I've ever had. Coleslaw was really good and mellow, too. Batter could have had a bit more flavor for the shrimp but, despite the oysters being small, they were cooked perfectly. Now, the reason I am giving this place 3 stars is because my mom asked for a child's filet to go. The lady/our waitress said okay and that she would let us know when it was on the counter to check out. NOT ONCE did she say "Oh, you can't take a child's to go" or "Child's does not mean less food." No, once we got up there to check out and the food was waiting- THEN we were told that, no, there is no child's to go. So, we were stuck paying the $14. And they give you this TINY little container of coleslaw and MORE fries than you get with eating in. The pieces of fish were a little bigger but the hush puppies were smaller.
