This place has the best catfish and slaw I've ever had. I ordered the catfish platter, which came with four fried filets, two hush puppies, French fries (I didn't want these so I asked for mine without) and coleslaw (the server offered to bring two since I didn't want the fries). Boy, am I sure glad I got two coleslaws! Normally I'm not super excited about coleslaw, but this by far the best I've ever had with finely chopped cabbage and just the right amount of dressing. The catfish filets were juicy and tender with an ideal amount of breading. It is reasonably priced. On a whim it was decided...we wanted fried catfish and were looking for an adventure as well. Shaw's, here we come. First of all, it's located in the middle of nowhere if you're coming from Nola or the Northshore. Be prepared to drive down some long, winding (creepy) roads. But part of the adventure is getting there, right? Keep going. It's worth the drive. Just when you think you're about to fall off of the face of the earth Shaw's appears. Whew. But wait. The parking lot is way full. Let's go in anyway. We came all this way, after all. Inside it is slammed. "Oh no," I think. This is going to turn out to be a big fail. It was not. We were seated rather quickly considering the volume of people here. Our waitress was prompt taking our order and had that sweet southern drawl that I love. She brought out a big ass bowl of coleslaw and our drinks while we waited on the reason we'd come all this way...the fried catfish. Here's what you can look forward to at Shaw's: -Excellent food and service (that catfish was to die for) -Excellent people watching. Under normal circumstances Shaw's would warrant a four star review. What makes it a five star place is all of the memories I have from my frequent trips here during the summers of my youth. For years I spent the summers up the road from this restaurant at the New Orleans Area Council's Boy Scout camp. On weekends we would load up the other counselors and head to Shaw's. Some of my fondest memories involved their catfish and the beautiful redneck waitresses who would not give us the time of day. Recently I went back to the camp for a visit and was lucky enough to return to Shaw's for dinner. Despite many years having passed since my last visit, I was pleasantly surprised to find that not much had changed since then. Shaw's is a very simple place. They are only open Thurs-Sat and there aren't too many items to choose from on the menu. In fact, all you need to decide is if you want your catfish filleted or whole. This is an all you can eat joint. Once you've chosen the type of catfish you want, your order is delivered with baskets of hush puppies, French fries, coleslaw and catfish. As you finish one basket, let the waitress know and she will bring out as much as you want. I have seen tables with 10 empty baskets so it must truly be all you can eat. All of the food is very good, but the catfish is some of the best I have ever had. I imagine part of that is due to the freshness since they buy from one of the fish farms located up the road. If you are in the area, or if you're willing to drive for great fried catfish, I highly recommend you check out Shaw's. read more

Well off the beaten path, you can find Shaw's basking in its simple charm. I was told by a Mississippi native that this is the cat fish place to go. What he failed to mention was looks I would receive. Maybe he didn't know, but I digress. It's a small establishment that almost feels like you're walking into someone's home. The plates, cups, etc. seem like it was pulled out of grandma's cabinets. The food: I ordered the catfish. Why? Because Mississippi, that's why. It was great. Maybe the best cat fish I've had. Although I'm still not a big catfish fan. But it's all you can eat. How do you beat that? It came along with slaw (I don't eat that stuff from anywhere), fries that were great, and the hush puppies..... oh those hush puppies. It was my favorite part. They were amazingly good. The sweet tea tasted close to Chic-fil-a sweet tea, which is a win in my book. Then ended it with some good banana pudding. But did I mention those hush puppies. If you want country then Shaw's is your destination of choice for excellent big servings of catfish. Sweat tea was perfect. Our large group of 20 were given a separate room. For out of townees this place is open Fri, Sat, Sun only, call ahead to confirm they are open before driving to Shaws. The restaurant is clean just got to look past the trailers in the parking lot. My husband and I have been going to Shaw's for 3 years, every Thursday. We have missed a few weeks, but that is not normal for us. Their catfish is unsurpassed! And their Slaw....Oh My! I had never had slaw with sweet pickle relish in it before, but my oh my, it is good! If you come on a Thursday night, you will probably see us sitting in the corner behind the front entrance.
