    My intermediate project.
    Mallory M.

I had a great experience at Soul Collections. I enrolled in the beginner and intermediate sewing classes back to back. Shannon is great teacher with a LOT of patience. I really enjoyed coming to her class each weekend. Her teaching assistants were a great help as well. It was a great refresher for someone who had sewn in the past but it's also a great class for real beginners as well. I made a difficult piece for my intermediate project. She gave me a bit of extra time to complete it and I'm really happy with it! Thank you Shannon!

I'm in love with Soul Collections. I've been thinking about learning how to see again for months now. I stumbled across this local gem on Groupon and purchased a voucher for beginner's classes to get my feet wet again. I called the business to inquire about the class schedule and spoke with Shannon who is the owner of this lovely place. She told me that she likes to start all classes in the beginning of the month, that way everyone enrolled is on the same page which is cool with me. Shannon is very friendly and very passionate about sewing. At the first class, she gave us a little history about how the business got started. Prior to opening the storefront business, she taught classes in the comfort of her apartment. She wanted to provide an outlet for several teens who were hanging out on the street as she was going to her job. It worked for a bit but it didn't last long. Shannon then decided to open her business in the location where she is now to provide affordable lessons to those who wanted to learn about sewing. She offers several classes during the week and on the weekends. There is beginner's sewing, intermediate sewing, pattern making, draping, leggings, children's sewing class and several others. I really enjoyed my experience here and will definitely be back to take more lessons. There are also added perks if you check in on Yelp, there is a discount off of a beginner's class, there is also an $140 voucher that you can purchase for use towards classes valued at only $125 and there is also a 5% discount off any class. I would highly recommend this location if you are interested in learning about sewing.

I love it here! I finally learned how to use a sewing machine and I have a pillow, pincushion, and skirt to show for it. The classes only have 9 students, so you can actually get to know each other and ask questions. What i really like is when my first skirt proved to be going wrong at every turn, she allowed me to stay and work on it. It was really simple in the end. The pricing is the most affordable I have found, which is great. The first class was really slow though. We watched two videos showing how to do the same thing. I think just showing one would suffice. Other than that, it was all great. I can't wait to sign up for the intermediate course.

I had I great experience trusting Shannon with the alterations to my wedding dress. Shannon was very accommodating with my work schedule and made time for me when I was rushing to work or if she was staying late for a fitting. I would highly recommend Shannon for any alternating you are considering! I will definitely go to Shannon with any alterations I have. Thanks Shannon!

My daughter has been taking classes at Soul Collections for the past year. She also celebrated her 7th birthday there and attended a week of camp. This summer she tried various camps in NYC and when I asked her which one was her favorite she said "The sewing camp is number one". The owner Shannon is an expert in her field and is warm and caring. Her employees are also wonderful and helpful. I can't recommend this place enough, check it out when you can!!!

My experience with Shannon at Soul collections couldn't better. I took the beginners sewing classes once a week for 4 weeks, the class is 2 hours long and very well structured. In just 4 classes I learned so much! Shannon is also very accommodating as I missed my Saturday class because of work so she let me join her Thursday class! At the first class I made a pin holder which I was very proud of and proceeded to make a beautiful skirt from just a giant piece of fabric in the next 3 classes. With Shannons patients and direction I was able to do it practically on my own. I still can't believe I made this skirt!!! It's so cute! And now I have a few projects of my own I do at home. She definitely taught me the basics and enough to have confidence in cutting up my own clothes at home lol. Thanks Shannon! I will definitely be back for the intermediate class!

Shannon replaced the lining in my favorite Madewell wool coat and did a much better job than Madewell originally had.

Now that I'm all settled I decided to try the Intro to Sewing class ($80: supplies included) here & I am SO glad I did!! Diana Rupp, the owner was absolutely amazing. She was so friendly and open! I showed up there with absolutely no knowledge of sewing or how to work a sewing machine. But if you come with interest and an excitement to learn, you'll enjoy it. She gave us hand outs with everything we needed to know, took us through all supplies for basic sewing, taught us the parts of the sewing machine and how to thread a sewing machine. I didn't even know there was a whole process even before beginning to use one?! Lol. She went at our pace, helped us each time we made a mistake, all while having a regular conversation. None of us ever felt left behind or stressed. I was beyond excited when the class was finished. I bought some supplies from her store and even Diana's sewing book (which I highly recommend if you're dedicated). I can't wait to practice on this new hobby and make it my own! They also have tons of other classes available if you want to learn other techniques. Already eyeing the next class I'll be taking: embroidery :)) Love love loved my experience!

If you're like me and had zero to no experience with sewing, this is the perfect class for you. She goes over threading step by step and gives you some great techniques and advice to take home with you so that you can practice. The classes are very small, so if you have questions, she's available. The two hours flew by. I left the class feeling very confident in what I learned (a little too confident, telling people I can take on those mofos on Project Runway!) I can't wait to take another class.

They've framed and matted 8 or 9 pictures and made beautiful, archival prints from 7 or 8 special photos. These items have been in my phone and closets for years, and now, finally, there's enough time and cash to get everything up onto the walls. Having tons of questions and being aware of how complicated this can be, I approached the whole thing with trepidation. And now, couldn't be happier with the results. They asked questions, explained the process, and made suggestions that worked. Everyone has a great sense of color and proportion, and all the attention to detail and documentation you could ask for when handing over your artwork. Folks, thank you for the technical (cropping, getting digital images out of my Mac and into Blick's servers) AND artistic education. With Tera's enthusiastic attitude one day and Xiao's patient, calm demeanor the next, I forgot to be anxious and actually had a good time. Prices were reasonable and definitely transparent. Some of my things were complicated and/or special, and worth the $$$ spent. On the other end, there was no attitude and no shame for being unable to spend a fortune on each piece. For instance, Maria was happy to take a low priced stock frame off the shelf so that the complicated 2-opening mat one item needed was affordable. When a pick up was enormous and heavy, Tera actually helped me out the door, down the block, and around the corner. She waited with me for an Uber to come and get it all home! Though turnaround time is not instantaneous, Blick meets promised deadlines. Last but not least, shout out to Phil, another employee who chatted with me during a short wait. Details do matter.

I was drawn to the flameworking class because of the thoughtful expression of how the instructor, Saint, described the process of working with borosilicate glass in their class. Truthfully, I was so blown away by it all. Urban Glass has a beautiful community based inclusivity spirit and artist centered focus. The studio was well organized and vast. The staff and technical support team are friendly and helpful. Saint's class had a wonderful pacing to it for a 6 hour workshop. We got to know all of the participants and connect together in a fun way, had a few informative demos on equipment safety and glass techniques, and then got to creating! Han, another glass artist at Urban Glass assisted the class, and it was really great to be able to explore making marbles, small figurines on our own and also have Saint and Han jump in when we needed a bit of extra hands on help. I felt confident from the demos and my practice time to be able to rent space on my own after. Our class has stayed in touch since, and I know several of us from the class have been back to the studio since to create. I'm excited to return to explore and learn more!
