Just came out of my sewing 101 lesson and it was great! We learned how to sew a skirt after measuring our bodies then cutting out pieces from fabric. You can bring your own fabric, or they have fabric in store to choose from. My fabric was about $24 after a 10% discount. Emily was a fantastic teacher and made things easy to learn. I learned a lot and now have a cute little skirt to wear. Classes are limited to 4 people so they're pretty small. Emily is there every step of the way to ensure you're doing things correctly. My class was from 11-2 and there weren't any rest breaks, so make sure to eat beforehand or bring a snack! There's also open sewing for $7/hour. Class was I think $85. Great value for sewing lessons in Brooklyn for sure! read more

I found the perfect skein of Rasta for a warm winter hat and when I paid the price was not what the label said. The salesperson said "tax". I told her there is no tax on yarn in New York City and she said she never heard of that. I explained that there's no tax on clothing the cost under $110 and yarn or fabric used to make clothing again she said she never heard of that. Incredibly disappointed! If you were operating a business in New York City, you should know the laws. So disappointed that I had to return the yarn, and leave without it! read more

Had an amazing experience at Brooklyn Craft Company! I attended one of their Sewing 101 classes, taught by Diana. Some highlights: * The store itself is super cute. A crafter's dream. * The staff was so incredibly nice and helpful when it came to fabric selection * Perhaps this is more luck of the draw but my fellow classmates were all kind and encouraging, I had a great time learning with them. * Diana's instruction was great, she thoroughly explained the ins and outs of our machines and how to use them. * COVID-19 Precautions: Everyone was required to be masked up regardless of vaccination status. It's a tight space so social distancing is tricky, but everyone has plenty of room to work. * After a workshop, you walk away with a finished piece! (in my instance, a tote bag) So satisfying and fun. I will definitely be returning for another workshop! :) read more

I took a class here through coursehorse.com for beginner's sewing 101. The class was supposed to be 3 hours, from learning how to use a sewing machine (all the parts, threading, stitiches, etc) to creating a simple skirt. They let us stay well after the 3 hours to complete our projects, which was super awesome. The two women running the class (one was the owner) were very helpful and patient, even when I had some issues with my stitch coming out crooked! I never felt left behind, they took their time going around the class to everyone to help (only about 10 people in a class which was nice) and everyone worked at their own pace. I was so inspired by this class, I bought a sewing machine a week later. Really! I've been sewing scarves, pillows, even tank tops since. I look forward to more sewing classes and other craft classes from them because it really was such a great experience! read more

This is a small shop that also offers classes. I have taken the quilting classes. The teacher is amazing, the staff was helpful and nice. The fabrics were limited, but high quality. They also offer open sewing time for a small fee. You can use their space, machines, irons, ironing boards and they will give you a discount on any supplies. Such a gem. read more

The workshop Brush Lettering was so much fun! We learned the basics, and it's so much harder than I though. Mila was great in explaining different techniques and very patient with us. The three hours flew by. It was great that we could buy the supplies after class, although we got to keep the pen and the notebook. Definitely recommend it. Cute store too! read more

Finding live bait in NY is tough but this place had great night crawlers! In most places half are dead but not here! The staff was knowledgeable too - sometimes you get a blank stare when you ask questions but they clearly knew their stuff. If I could give them six yelps I would but the highest I can give is five so this is a whole-hearted five yelp review. read more

I took the indigo dying class with Molly George. She was very knowledgable on the topic and passionate about the class. I would recommend this class to anyone that has never done this type of dying. In the class you are taught various techniques on how to make patterns with the dye and their is freedom to experiment and explore creative possibilities. This is the kind of craft store where you walk in and immediately want to buy everything on the shelves. Everything here is whimsical, adorable and attractive and very Pinterest-worthy. I took a quilt block class here and absolutely loved it. Not only was the class affordable compared to other classes out there, but the teacher/owner Brett was an awesome instructor, very patient and helpful. She made quilting seem very simple and easy. The space is small and intimate, and the sewing machines are all brand new and top notch quality. I went in today for a watercolor technique class which included a light brunch. The space was smaller than I expected, but it made more a more intimate experience. The instructor was sweet and knowledgeable and I walked away knowing a bit more about the art form. The class was a bit pricey to take, especially since the brunch was a box of store bought pasties, but overall it was fun. read more

BCC is an awesome, owner-operated craft store just off the G in Greenpoint. I've taken multiple classes there, each one resulting in a new set of skills I can now use and build on. The instructors are super patient, all from experienced backgrounds and the class sizes are so small (usually 6-8) that everyone gets personal attention and to finish their project! When it comes to supplies, they've got everything from cute gifts to practical fixings and even project kits. They recently expanded their fabric offerings, too, carrying a great selection of Robert Kaufman solids and C+S / Birch prints. Go there and get inspired! read more

This is a super cute and adorable shop a few blocks from the Greenpoint G station. They've fit a lot into this little store and I strongly recommend stopping by here, even if you're just in the market for a cute gift. I had to keep my wallet on lockdown. It was rough. There is a variety of arts and crafts supplies sold here, as well as a variety of Cotton + Steel fabrics which are super cute, albeit a bit pricey. If you have a fabric addiction like I do though, cost is no matter! I took a 5 hour Beginner's Quilting Class here and while it could use some improvements, it was great. I've been sewing for a few years but I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and explore quilting. The instructor, G, was helpful and very patient. The class was small and individualized attention was not an issue in this class. But, even though the class was small, I found it difficult to manage sewing as there wasn't a ton of space available at the sewing table. It was hard to spread out the fabric when ironing and sandwiching the quilt. Also, I suggest splitting this class into two sessions. Five straight hours is a lot and by the end of the class, my head was spinning at bit. If anything, it should be noted in the class registration that there will be no break and students should bring their own lunch/snack. The class took place from 12pm-5pm, so if all you ate was breakfast, you were pretty much starving by the middle of class. I can't work like that so I ran out to get a snack. I had honestly assumed there would be some sort of official break. Just some advance notice about not having a break would be super helpful. But, I left this class feeling more confident in my quilting abilities and I learned a lot too, which is the most important thing! You will leave class with a small quilt (if you finish it on time!) which is a nice accomplishment. I definitely plan on coming back here for more classes or any time I need some inspiration. read more

I've taken about 5 or 6 classes with the gals at Brooklyn Craft Co. It is soooooo worth it! Every class I've attended has made me want to just craft all day! They are very nice and super helpful and will go over everything multiple times if you get stuck! You do have a certain amount of time for each class, but sometimes it runs over and you can stay if you don't finish your project. Sometimes they have guest instructors for crafts, which are also very helpful and knowledgeable about their craft. Sometimes you even get to keep some of the things you use to make your craft- I was able to keep the loom I used to make my headband! Generally all craft materials are provided, but they do encourage you to bring your own if there is something specific you want to use. They will even tell you what to bring if that's what you choose to do! They even offer some snacks that are delicious! The classes offered by this company are well worth the time, money and effort! I encourage everyone to take the classes at The Brooklyn Craft Co.! read more
