My 9 yo daughter asked me if she can learn how to knot. She didn't want to do it via virtual since Covid everything is virtual and she is done with it. I searched and found this place. Before Covid they run kids classes but now they just have the open forum which is like a open knitting class. They take only 4 people per class and set everyone apart. What a wonderful little store! They hand dye about half of the yarn they sell and the colors are incredible! While I was there, one of the co-owners was helping a knitter plan her whole project, from printing out a pattern, helping her understand needle size, and choosing yarn within her budget. This is the cutest little yarn shop I've ever been to. I was visiting my daughter in Brooklyn and we walked here from her apartment. I was overwhelmed by the amazing selection of yarns and knitting supplies. I was getting ready to start a new project, after not knitting for quite some time. Sadly I didn't have the pattern with me, but I found some tools and accessories that would work for me, including stitch markers, a stitch gauge, and a small ruler. The staff were pleasant and very helpful. I am planning a return visit soon, with the pattern, so I can purchase the yarns and get started on the project! The best I can say is meh. They have a huge selection of Hedgehog Fibers. The staff was lukewarm, uninterested at best bored at worst. I wanted to purchase stitch markers but they were *only* $7.00 and their minimum for credit card purchases is $10.00. I left with nothing. I was also looking for a magazine but, I didn't bother asking since no one bothered to ask me if I needed help or if I was looking for anything in particular. What a nice shop! My daughter and I booked a two-hour lesson with the lovely, genteel, and extraordinarily patient Kate, and I now know how to knit mittens--a skill I would never have learned on my own. After the lesson, we browsed and squeezed tons of product from Malabrigo and Hedgehog Fibres. The clerk answered questions, but otherwise left us to explore on our own, which I appreciated. Sample sweaters and neckwear from popular designers are awesomely executed and displayed. I ended up buying a couple of skeins of Hedgehog sock, and the clerk offered to wind my purchases. My daughter obsessed over a particular yarn. I wanted to buy it for her, but because she couldn't quite envision how she might use it, we left it on the shelf and went home. When inspiration struck her a few days later, I was able to make the purchase through Argyle's on-line store, and she picked it up the next business day. Brooklyn knitters are lucky to have such a classy yarn-store hangout with such a gifted resident teacher. And though I don't live in NY, I can see myself buying more Hedgehog in the on-line store and having it shipped. I recommend! read more

I found this store as part of the NYC yarn crawl. I found a yarn I liked but there were not many skeins of it on the floor. Kate was very cheerful and said that more skeins could be ordered, but I needed to talk to Esther. Esther who was anything but cheerful told me that it would take a month for the yarn to come in. I basically had to take an oath that I was okay with waiting for a month. Five weeks went by and I decided to call and check on the order. Esther answered the phone. She scolded me for calling because she thought I was someone else. Instead of her apologizing to me for the misunderstanding, she expected me to apologize. The owner should fire her. Three stars for it being "the only game in town" (only yarn shop in Windsor Terrace). LIke another reviewer, I find the customer service weak--one of the owners is always behind the counter and, when the shop is not busy, barely looks up from her computer. 'Welcoming", 'friendly' must apply only when the shop is empty (actually, now that I realize it, that is the problem---I only get service when I'm the only one there). I always seem to get one sentence answers to my questions and then....nothing. No "anything else", etc. Not very intuitive about customer service. Argyle Yarn Shop has only been open for a week, and I can already tell that a good portion of every paycheck is going to end up here. Great selection of yarn at every price range, amazing knitting needle and crochet hook variety, and truly beautiful pattern books. The owners have really put thought into making this a great shop, as well as a community space. Supposedly some classes and some a Stitch N' Bitch will be coming in January! I seriously can't believe my luck living 2 blocks away. Working with some truly gorgeous Cascade 220 Superwash right now that I didn't pay an arm and a leg for. Oh and have I mentioned that they wind the yarn for you and that you can return any yarn that is unwound if it ended up being extra? I don't know of any other stores that do that. I've been to dozens of yarn shops, and I can honestly say that this is the best one I have ever been to. SO pleased that I live so close. read more

Although my experience with yarn shops is limited, the good vibe, positive attitude, charming owners and beautiful store setup here will certainly make this place a success. I came in looking for a beginner set of crochet hooks and yarn as I've been wanting to learn the craft forever. Esther, one of the owners, quickly showed me to a great set of hooks and took it upon herself to do a basic crochet demo on the spot. She was knowledgable, friendly, and provided me free patterns and online resources to check out when I got home. I was told I could come back with any problems or questions, and feel totally comfortable that they would be welcome to that if I had any issues down the road. I'm so glad I stumbled across this cute little shop in my neighborhood. I'd highly recommend it to anyone, as this is one small business that I hope is a wild success--they deserve it! read more

My partner and I visited this LYS during the Brooklyn Yarn Crawl. Despite the increased foot traffic during the Crawl, we were greeted promptly and happily by the store staff. I was impressed with the variety here, as in addition to more expensive skeins, they also carried more economical yarn perfect for beginners or quick projects. I was also really happy to find a decent selection of crochet supplies! As a crocheter, I often feel somewhat out of place in stores catering just to knitters. They had a backlog of yarn to wind in store due to the crawl, so we didn't get our purchases wound. A good thing, too, as we bought several skeins and didn't want to wait! The store has an open layout with clear signage. It's easy to find what you need if it's in stock. It didn't feel cramped, despite the increased number of customers from the event. They apparently have a classroom and a fairly regular "knitting 101" class schedule. They don't appear to offer more advanced knitting classes or any crochet classes. I'm considering taking a class here... if only I can be pried away from my hook! read more

Anyone who loves knitting will tend to love all yarn shops by definition, but I really think this one is special. Brooklyn is a giant place, and yet it has a real dearth of all things crafty, in particular yarn shops. You tend to get your yarns in one of two ways - purely acrylic, not-very-good yarn from a dollar store or high-end, can't afford to make more than one baby bootie yarn from some extravagant place. This is the yarn shop for the people! Excellent selection of yarns at all price points and some really beautiful things that won't break the bank (but also some even MORE beautiful things if you want to splurge). They've got a super friendly and approachable staff that are a joy to chat up and learn from and will help you in a very easy way get what you need. Argyle also has a very nice frequent buyer program - I don't know many stores that provide this. I can't remember the exact details but suffice to say after you spend a certain amount on yarn, you get something in return! A discount, a freebie, some such thing. What's not to like! Thank you, Yelp, for directing me to this lovely store. I first went pre-Christmas to buy a pattern book and some yarn to finally make my husband a sweater (boyfriend sweater curse lifted!). The shop was bustling barely an hour after opening on Saturday, yet the two shop owners (a man and woman... not sure if they are related?) were carefully checking in with each customer, answering questions, giving advice, etc. The atmosphere was extremely inviting - much better than some snobbier shops I have visited. Upon checkout I mentioned that I was in need of a class in entrelac, as my attempts to teach myself were failing miserably. What luck! They had just scheduled one for January! The class was $50, but considering my other option was $70+ at the Vogue knitting convention, I decided to give Argyle a try. The class was fantastic. Kate was patient, encouraging, and really let the knitters go at their own pace, just checking their work as they went along to make sure nothing went awry. A quick note for those who take classes: The classroom is in the back and has these lovely windows onto a little patio. Although this leads to lovely light in the room, it was chilly during the class. Make sure you wear long sleeves to avoid needing to bundle up in your coat! I can't wait to go back for more classes and more yarn (but no more yarn until I finish some of my stash!). read more

This place has a good selection and reasonable prices, and it's right in my neighborhood. The only real issue I have with Argyle is that the vibe here is sometimes a bit weird. I recently spent almost a hundred bucks here on supplies for a project and when I tried to ask a simple question about the pattern the woman manning the counter acted like I had completely ruined her day. There were only two other people in the store. I've been knitting for a while now and usually even the busiest yarn stores are pretty chill, the people who work here often seem totally overwhelmed and impatient in a way that is kind of odd. read more

This shop was superbly adorable. The 2 people behind the counter, who I assume own the place, are really friendly and helpful. I wouldn't say the selection/collection of yarn was large, but probably comparable to a lot of other yarn stores in NYC. LIkewise, the prices are higher than ideal but probably comparable to a lot of other yarn stores in NYC. If you want good advice and want a learning experience out of your yarn buying experience, this is a good choice for you. But if you want purely yarn to start your project, there are probably other stores in NYC to go to with a bigger selection of yarn for a larger range of prices. I'm happy I came to this shop and it was a pleasant experience, but maybe just not what I'm looking for. read more

This is my go to and favorite yarn store if I can't make it to Lion Brand (which is rightfully Mecca for yarn) on my lunch break in the city. Or if I'm simply at home on the weekend or whatever because its either a 2 stop train ride for me or a little bit of walk over. Very friendly staff and honestly pretty affordable prices in comparison to some other small business knitting stores. They also have a much wider selection than other small knitting/craft stores in Park Slope/South Slope, Cobble Hill area etc. You can get both fairly cheap synthetic stuff and luxurious soft woolly stuff and I love that aspect. read more

Wow! Such a wonderful yarn shop!! I stumbled in for some white sock yarn and stumbled out with MUCH more... woops. :) The cute couple who own(?) this store are so helpful! They have an amazing database to help you find what you need. For instance I wanted some purple/orange variegated yarn for a baby gift and they were able to pull up every yarn in the store that fit that description. SO HELPFUL. Visited this yarn shop today, and totally fell in love! It has a great yarn selection, and stellar customer service! The shop owner, Esther Betten, was very kind and helpful! She offered information about a worsted weight yarn I was looking at and winded all my yarn purchases for me free of charge! She allowed my daughter who is almost 13 months to play with a toy shopping cart and play around the store and also opened the back room as a changing station for her as I stayed longer to peruse around. I picked up several different yarns, two on sale for great prices and a splurge purchase of Madelinetosh yarn in Vintage color, a beautiful colorway! Argyle has a wonderful selection of yarns. They're really great quality and the colors are vivid and gorgeous. Pricing is higher than Michaels, but you get a much better looking product after all your hard work! Some lines they carry include MadelineTosh and Quince and Co. Even better than the yarns is the customer service. Esther is the nicest and most helpful shop owner I've ever met. She is super encouraging towards new knitters, friendly, and happy to answer any yarn, knitting, crocheting, embroidery, or weaving question you may have. I'm attempting an ombre scarf project and had to split up the skeins; she helped me calculate yardage, figure out the pattern, and even wind the double fingering weight balls for me. read more

This place is beautiful and warm. Everything a beginner knitter could want. It has a great atmosphere and there is a man who works here that has a lovely personality and is very helpful. Just don't ever bring your kids there and I'm sure this could be said for a lot of stores like this. I spent more time saying 'don't touch' than being able to pour over their gorgeous yarns. I know a lot of moms that knit. A little kids table with an abacus on it would suffice. Still a fan. read more
