So I found this cute spot on yelp. Ever since I was younger I wanted to learn design and how to make my own clothes but became a nurse instead. Now that I'm all settled I decided to try the Intro to Sewing class ($80: supplies included) here & I am SO glad I did!! Diana Rupp, the owner was absolutely amazing. She was so friendly and open! I showed up there with absolutely no knowledge of sewing or how to work a sewing machine. But if you come with interest and an excitement to learn, you'll enjoy it. She gave us hand outs with everything we needed to know, took us through all supplies for basic sewing, taught us the parts of the sewing machine and how to thread a sewing machine. I didn't even know there was a whole process even before beginning to use one?! Lol. She went at our pace, helped us each time we made a mistake, all while having a regular conversation. None of us ever felt left behind or stressed. I was beyond excited when the class was finished. I bought some supplies from her store and even Diana's sewing book (which I highly recommend if you're dedicated). I can't wait to practice on this new hobby and make it my own! I just got back from my Intro to Sewing class and I had the best time. Diana was an awesome instructor. If you're like me and had zero to no experience with sewing, this is the perfect class for you. She goes over threading step by step and gives you some great techniques and advice to take home with you so that you can practice. The classes are very small, so if you have questions, she's available. The two hours flew by. I left the class feeling very confident in what I learned (a little too confident, telling people I can take on those mofos on Project Runway!) I can't wait to take another class. read more

Whether you're learning the ropes of the sewing machine, putting the finishing touches on your first quilt, or looking to create something new, this studio will make you feel right at home. They stock a variety of quilting and fashion fabrics (including gorgeous prints) as well as all the notions you need for a complete sewing kit. They also carry supplies for punchneedle, embroidery, cross stitch, needlepoint, sashiko, quilting, dyeing, knitting, crocheting, and kid-friendly crafts. (I definitely didn't realize half these crafts existed before walking into the store.) Pretty much everything you find in the studio corresponds to a workshop, so if you see something that interests you but don't know where to start, you can sign up for a class! I've taken 2 classes so far (Intro to Sewing Machines and Wiksten Haori Jacket) both taught by Diana (the owner) and they were both awesome. Diana's teaching style feels like you're having a conversation with a good friend who also happens to teach you something cool. I left both classes with a deeper knowledge of sewing techniques as well as a jacket I am pretty proud of. I thoroughly enjoyed my time there and loved working in the super cute space. Took the "Skip The Tailor: Simple Alterations Workshop" class which was about 2hrs long. I already know the basics of using a sewing machine [I took the 8-week course at The Sewing Studio. Highly recommended!], but felt that additional tips and tricks would be useful. Class was small, maybe 8 people total which was great since the teacher [Diana] was able help everyone individually if need be. All the equipment and the studio itself were pretty clean. Learned a neat trick to tie a knot in thread and how to sew a button properly, as opposed to making Xs like a mad person. We were taught how to hem pants [denim] by machine and how to hand sew a basic slip stitch [blind stitch/invisible seam] on wool. I so do not have the patience to hand sew, but at least I know how. Towards the end of the class, some students brought out garments that they wanted to alter and Diana explained how to go about it, with the rest of the class chiming in with thoughts. The teacher was nice and the class served its purpose... blah blah blah. The one gem I got out of the class was that their sewing machines had magnetic seam guides. I don't care that I sound like super dork... but OMG! I promptly ordered one for my sewing machine. No more drunkard crooked lines for this girl. *thumbs up* read more

Once upon a time, I worked 90+ hours a week. It was not fun. After I started a job that only required half those hours, I didn't know what to do with myself. A whole new NYC revealed itself to me. No longer was it the inside of an office, my gym or my bed. I had this bright idea to start taking crafty classes. Since this was just a few blocks away from my apartment, I signed up for a sewing class and was instantly hooked. After that, there was a flurry of sewing, embrodering, knitting, hanging out with everyone in the lounge. Good times were had by all. The studio is in an artists' apartment building on Chrystie St., kind of near the Bowery Whole Foods. It's bright and artist-studio-ey: bright yarn hanging from hooks on the wall, reams of cloth in the corners, sewing machines lined up on tables. I really miss taking classes here. If a class catches your eye, make sure to sign up for it as soon as you can because the classes fill up quickly. The space can only accomodate 6-10 people at a time. read more

I went to the Intro to Sewing Machine Class today. We were only 3 students. Diana was very patient and knowledgeable. Like others, we made a wallet. I finished it with half an hour to go but I showed her an eye glasses case that I'd knitted and wanted to line. She very generously showed me how to make it and gave me the fabric and some matching embroidery thread attach it. I don't have a sewing machine and I was using the class to see if I could really handle one and with a view to buying one in the future. Best place to take a sewing class! I was very nervous because I had only used a sewing machine once in my life, but Diana was an awesome teacher! Class was taught at a great pace and she gave everyone a lot of attention. It was very relaxed and she was very encouraging! She had lots of patience and did not mind showing us the steps over and over again! Looking forward to taking the Fashion lab workshop next! Also did blockprinting with Siobhain, another excellent teacher, full of great knowledge and tons of ideas! This was a fun treat! I had a great time at the Intro Sewing Class and I look forward to taking more classes here. We made a cute little wallet and the class was very relaxed and cozy. The class began with explaining the sewing machine and learning how to thread it perfectly. It is excellent for beginners or people who want a refresher on how a sewing machine works. I love Make Workshop. This week I enrolled into the intro sewing class and had a blast. I hadn't touched a THREAD, much less a sewing machine, since junior high home ec, so needless to say I was a little anxious. But like most in my class (with non-creative jobs) we needed an outlet to nurture our creative jones; Make was the right place to be. Diana, the owner, led our 2-hour class. I'm sure I can speak for my classmates (about 10 people) when I say that she could not have been more welcoming, informative, supportive, fun, and patient. We proudly left with a newly crafted wallet from scrap material, and knowing how to thread a machine and rig a bobbin. Project Runway, here we come. So much fun, I definitely plan to take more classes. Diana is awesome! She has such a love of sewing and so many years of experience. She'll tell you ahead of time the mistakes that you'll likely make, and you either don't make them, or laugh harder when you do. Either way, you learn from it and that knowledge sticks. The space is wonderful for small groups. Diana's got big tables, a row of sewing machines, ironing gear, and everything you'll need in case you forget to bring your own to class. I love Make Workshop! If you're looking to learn a new craft, practice one you know or buy beautiful fabric and notions, this is the place. I took 3 classes there (weaving, leather and quilting workshops) and I learned so much that I have been able to keep working on those crafts on my own and make a variety goods (and even sold some!). The classes and teachers are attentively selected and the actual shop is just beautiful. One of the classes was taught by Diana, the owner, who went above and beyond in helping me achieve my complicated design, supported and encouraged me along the way. It has everything you need and the hand picked inventory is of the highest quality and you can buy it both in person and online (I have done both!). I took the Intro to Sewing Machine Class and am now one week into the Fashion Lab. Diane is a great teacher -- she's enthusiastic about teaching and seems to know her stuff when it comes to sewing. Diane shares lots of advice from sewing tricks and best practices to money saving tips. The projects are a lot of fun and a great stress reliever after work! I knew nothing about sewing machines when I first came, but Diane created a welcoming environment for all levels. Her book is required for Fashion Lab (it's on the supply list on the web site, so she's up front about it), but I didn't feel like she kept trying to sell her book at all during the classes. She has a couple copies for sale at her studio (which she doesn't mention unless you ask), but freely tells people to buy it on Amazon, where you get a big discount. The classes can be on the expensive side, but it's Manhattan (and in a very convenient location at that!) , so what do you expect?! read more

I took the Sewing II: Make a Dress class and I MADE A DRESS!!!! This was my first attempt at sewing clothes. Before the class I had made pillows and curtains. Diana is a wonderful teacher. She is very knowledgeable and also very patient. In addition to doing tutorials in class, she also worked with each student individually to meet our specific needs. I am tall so I had to make some adjustments to the pattern to make the dress fit. Diana was super-willing to help me with that. This was such a change from a sewing class I tried to take in Brooklyn where we were told that if the pattern didn't fit us, tough luck (I quit the class after the first session). Diana was available both in class and by email to answer all of my questions. I learned a ton. I now know how to lay out pattern pieces on fabric, how to put in an invisible zipper, how to sew seams and make a lining, how to make darts, and how to sew a hem. In order to finish the dress during the time period of the class you will need to spend some time working on your dress at home so it is best if you have a sewing machine or access to one outside of class time. My dress came out beautifully! I get tons of compliments on it and I wear it all the time! This class has started me on a mission to make my own clothes. Thank you Diana and Make Workshop. read more

This place is a gem! My daughter has been taking one of her youth sewing classes here for almost a year now and LOVES it. It's her favorite after school activity, and in addition to embroidery, hand sewing, basic crochet/knitting, she is getting to use a real sewing machine. Diana really makes an effort to help the girls in the class find what they are interested in and prep projects they can stay focused on for an afternoon. I also took a knitting class here to learn how to make a hat for the Women's March & found Diana to be a patient and organized teacher for someone like me, a total beginner! She went out of her way to get the perfect wool for me & custom dyed it to the perfect shade of pink. I hope I can take another one of her classes, either to learn to tailor my own clothing or more advanced knitting. read more

I've taken 3 workshops at Make over the past year or so and have been thrilled with my new skills! I took the Fashion Lab last Fall, and then over the summer took the Embroidery and Pillow Making workshops. Diana is very funny and down-to-earth, and her teaching style is clear and informative. In more full classes, she repeats information as needed, since people tend to work at different speeds. (She's a good multi-tasker)! In classes that are less full, she is a fun conversationalist while you're working on your project. Even though she keeps a busy schedule and has a lot on her plate, she's very open to questions and interested in what people are working on outside of class, which I admire. At the end of the Fashion Lab class last Fall, I was nearly finished with the dress when I realized that it needed to be taken in for a better fit. I figured I'd eventually get around to it, but as it turned out, who was I kidding with my crazy schedule...? During the Pillow Making workshop, I mentioned to Diana that I was unsure of how to re-size it, and she graciously invited me to come in just before one of her current fashion lab classes so we could do a dress fitting! It was great- she really helped me, and she let me stay to work on it during her class, and now I have a clear path to finishing the project! I am also currently working on embroidered Christmas gifts, and making new throw pillows from vintage fabric I bought in a Berlin thrift store. SO FUN. YAY!!!! read more

I see why people are giving this high ratings - it's cute with a very Etsy feel and well you can't shit on that. Wrong. I'm here to tell you that you can and you should. There were only 3 people in my intro sewing class. We were set to make a basic pencil case with Velcro and a decorative button. The Velcro was the peel kind that adheres to the fabric. No big deal. Nothing too complicated, small class and 2 hours do accomplish this pretty minor task. Practically didn't make it. She [Diana?] waited an eternity for her third student to arrive. Great let's get started, but don't ask questions yet. No still not yet. Not now either. I'm not ready for questions...basically don't ask questions. One of the other women got her head bitten off for almost ruining [Diana's?] machine. Maybe if you had let her ask that question...oh sorry...you were talking. Oh and we were rushed out barely finishing off the basic project. Too much money to spend on bitchiness if you ask me. read more

I wanted to like this place. I took classes at Make when I lived in New York and was very disappointed. Diana and everyone there are extremely nice, the studio is homey and welcoming, and the selection of classes is unlike any other place I've seen. But the prices are too high, the classes disorganized, the equipment isn't well-maintained, and one of the instructors I had was very unprepared. Make just isn't worth the time or money. Why? I didn't learn how to make a zippered pouch in my zippered pouch class because of broken equipment. By the time Diana gave up fixing the first two machines and set me up on a third, class was over. I didn't learn to hem jeans in my hemming jeans class because the instructor arrived 45-50 minutes late to class and was unable to explain how to hem jeans. (huh???) Me and my classmates felt pretty ripped off. Diana emailed everyone the next day to apologize for the disaster and offer a free makeup class that she would teach personally. Nice gesture but I couldn't attend her session, wasn't offered a workable alternative, and still don't know how to hem jeans. Out all that money with nothing to show for it. To give them credit, I did take a great Denyse Schmidt workshop ages ago through Make. It was not taught by Make instructors, it was taught by DS herself, so it was really informative, amazing, inspiring, and well organized. It was spendy but worth it to be taught by DS herself. She organizes workshops on her own now, not through Make. If you're looking for great intro and advanced sewing and quilting classes that are reasonably priced, you should try City Quilter. Their equipment is very well maintained and the instructors are top notch. I went there after Make didn't work out, and am I glad I did! read more

I took the intro sewing class at Make, I wanted to like the class but unfortunately I didn't, I went there with a friend, we did learn a little bit since we didn't know anything about sewing with a machine at the time, but the class was so blah... I don't think the girl really knows how to teach. We waited for a long time to begin the class because some people were late, there were people who wanted to know more about her book and she obviously gave this people way more attention, me and my friend were really disappointed, I won't go back there for any other class. I have been dying to write a review for Make since I took the pencil skirt class there a while back. Where to begin? Ah yes, Diana. I'll start by saying that I was extremely excited to take this class since I am a fan of her book. However, after my experience she proved to be a much better writer than she is a teacher. She is impatient when you don't immediately understand what she has explained, and finds it difficult to clarify when you ask questions. I needed help with fitting, and she treated me like an alien organism. There were only three of us in the group, it wasn't as if I took her attention away from others, but she became frustrated never the less. She nearly bit my head off when I asked about doing a lining, replying, "You should have done that at home." I mentioned that I emailed her with a question about how to get started, and she said, " I don't answer emails about class projects because I don't get paid for that time." Seriously. One poor girl only spoke Japanese and Diana was rude to her as well. Throughout the 3 classes, she was busy working on her own projects and chatting with a friend who had come into the studio. She couldn't be bothered to do anything but talk about herself, and seemed to forget that we were even there. I didn't learn anything that wasn't already on the pattern envelope. read more

There were only two of us in the class that day, and it felt like hanging out learning something new with friends, if your friends had a lovely relaxing space with white walls and tin ceilings and lots of interesting art projects close at hand. I felt like the instructor was rushing and inpatient the whole time. I am a complete novice when it comes to sewing and was expecting a more thorough and patient instructor. I took a workshop on Block Printing. The class was small and the instructor friendly and knowledgeable. My complaint is that even though this class was called beginners the instructor raced through the basics and was all too eager to race ahead with the more experienced class members. She stopped to help me when I asked her to come over and show me something and was pleasant the whole time, but never offered unsolicited assistance or checked to see if I was doing things properly. Perhaps this is an unusual experience but I think that in a beginner's class a teacher should be more proactive in helping real beginners. read more

I really hate giving such a mediocre review, but I did not have a good experience with Make. I signed for the skirt class to brush up on my sewing. On the first day of class, I was very surprised to learn that the skirt class was the last leg on a longer course. Therefore, I was joining a class that had already bonded and was relegated to the outer margins of the room. I was surprised at the class size - way too many people in a small, but admittedly very charming space. Diana, so sweet on the phone, seemed annoyed when anyone had questions. The deal breaker was that a few sewing machines weren't working. I never returned for the next class. Took a class at Flirt in Brooklyn and had a much better experience. read more

I took the alterations workshop and it was great! I was worried that one 2 hour session wouldn't be able to cover everything, but we did and there was time to ask her specifically about the projects we wanted to work on at home. Diana was great, super friendly and helpful. She gave us samples of denim and wool to teach us hemming, both by machine and by hand. I definitely feel like I can shorten my jeans and pants without running to the tailor anymore! I plan to go back and take more classes! read more

I took Intro to Sewing Machine and found the class easy to follow. Machines are set up for students to work on, but students may also bring their own. The instructor/owner is very enthusiastic and cares about her student's development. It's very clear that she loves what she does, and that - at least for this newbie - is very inspiring. Make is incredible, I've read some of the negative reviews and I have to say that I have taken nearly 5 classes at MAKE and they have nothing but wonderful. Diana is a great teacher, she even offered to stay later after class to help me if I didn't fully understand a technique or needed some additional time to finish a project. I highly recommend MAKE to novice and advanced sewers. read more
