Had an absolutely terrible time here with instructor Archie. She paid more attention to skipping songs she didn't like than making sure everyone was on track. Others in our group said something more than once about the track skipping, but it continued throughout the whole experience. She also sped through instructions and skipped instructions. At least 3 times during our session, she interrupted with an "Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you to..." Overall Archie really ruined the vibe for what we hoped would be a fun afternoon out doing something different. We won't be returning or recommending to anyone else. read more

Beautiful Brooklyn space, the large room in the back looks great for a celebratory group class. Our teacher was fun and encouraging. I always look forward to visiting a painting lounge and drinking wine but I completely forget how challenging the classes can be. Our teacher was very patient and came over a few times to help our group. I would recommend sitting up front because it can be hard to hear the teacher's instructions or see what they are painting from the seats by the window. They provide cups and a cork screw for your wine (BYOB). I would definitely return for date night or a girls night out. read more

Recently visited again to paint Magic Tree "Summer". The two hours flew by quickly and although this time the class was pretty small (only four people), we somehow managed to have even more fun! The teacher (sorry, I can't remember her name, but she also lead us through the Klimt painting during my first visit as well) is so personable and easygoing. She makes the class a lot of fun and not intimidating at all. Even though the weather was bad and it was a weeknight, she still did not rush us out and pretty much let everyone finish at their own pace. I can't wait to paint at the Painting Lounge again! I had no idea how much fun this could be. I came across a groupon and decided it would be a fun activity since my niece was in town. If you look at their website, they have several locations and often have sale prices at different hours. You don't need any experience and this is something everyone can enjoy. Our instructor Chris was wonderful. He gave us alot of tips and tricks and information. I haven't had this much fun in a classroom setting since Kindergarten!! Through a Zozi deal, I booked a Saturday afternoon class to paint my own version of Gustav Klimt's "Tree of Life" (http://www.reproduction-gallery.com/oil_painting_reproduction_gallery/Gustav-Klimt-Tree-of-Life-1905-09-large-981951732.jpg). I brought my bf here as a birthday treat, and we were in great company with some random strangers, and our good friends, Isabella & Marco. Our instructor, Julie, was so laid back, and sweet, and very accommodating. She let us sit together as a group, and diligently took photos, all while instructing us non-artists to learn how to mix colors and paint the image to reflect Klimt's vision. Of course, at some point, everyone took some liberties to express their natural artistic inclinations and went to town on that canvas. Some were incredible, others were mediocre at best (mine for instance, ha)! The best part was being able to take our paintings home. The BYOB concept is a truly good call, as you can bring any beverage of your choice. Alcoholic or non. Everyone comes relaxed and ready to have a blast while being blasted. It's genius. These painting classes seem to be getting more and more popular. I see pictures of people attending them everywhere. Despite my lack of any artistic ability, I really enjoyed this class. The teacher slowly went through what color to use for each section of the picture. What to blend, and even went around helping each person. I'm amazing at how easily she can blend colors to make it look nice even on my ruined parts of the painting. We used a Gilt City discount, so we only paid about $20. Otherwise I assume it would be quite expensive. I never thought I would have the patience to paint, but this was actually quite relaxing. You can come with a group of friends, by yourself, or with your significant other, but I think it's really great to go with a group of girls. read more

I wanted to take my mother out for her birthday but wasn't interested in the typical bar/lounge painting scene. Painting Lounge sounded like a nice alternative and it was a plus they had their own studio right in Willamsburg. The large front windows of the studio were nice and worked in their favor as free publicity. People were walking by and stopping to watch us paint; some even for 15-20 minutes. But there was also a guy that went to the extent to interrupt our class. He opened the door and called our instructor out of the classroom, how rude? (Michelle from Full House voice) We were the first ones there and Emit, our instructor asked us our names, checked us off his list and told us to pick a seat. The painting was of Moderate level and I was happy we had a small photo of the original clipped onto the canvas for reference. Our class consisted of families and couples, some that were beginners like us which made us very comfortable. Emit was pretty informative but I noticed he would forget to tell us certain details (add the reflection of every color of leaf into the water, the leaves require a certain brushstroke). He got a lil caught up in creating his own masterpiece, that's why next time I'll be sure to book an Easy level class. I feel those instructors will be more hands on, atleast I hope. We tried our best to recreate the original painting and my mom was happy with hers; I was content with mine. I came here a few weeks ago for a Friday night painting class and it was a great experience. I bought a Groupon months ago for this place, and we finally booked a Friday night to use it. The owner was really friendly (Kevin) and the studio was welcoming and fun. We all had a nice workstation prepared and also the instructor was clear and on-point. This is a BYOB (so go to Vine Wine a few blocks away). So bring your wine and get creative with your paintings. It is amazing how we all had a template to work from and yet we all created very different works of art. I love how individualism and creativity works. The class took about 3 hours and Kevin was very into this clients. He was very enthusiastic about teaching and he was also very interested in all the students' paintings. He took photos of everyone's work. You can also get your work framed for an additional $25. Kevin also has a nice Nooka watch too, so ask him about it! I will definitely come back for more classes. This is just a therapeutic and fun way to end the week! It is also great for a first date. You can get to know one another while also making cool art! read more

The most fun I've had in a long long time! The Painting Lounge is crazy cool. During each class, you recreate a work of art. I bought a Groupon with my best friend and waited months for a Van Gogh's Starry Night class to be available. I have a print of it hanging up over my bed so I wanted to put mine right next to it! I paid $25 for a 2 hour class deal but then they changed the time to 3 hours so I added an extra $15 to register for the class. So worth it, and wise on their part because I don't think I would have finished it in just 2 hours. The class is BYOB, so naturally, that's what attracted me to begin with. I brought a bottle of my favorite vino for the occasion. They supply you with everything you need! Paints, apron, bottle opener, cups, brushes. And the best part is you get to keep the canvas when you're done. :) Never painted a day in your life? Don't worry! The instructor starts you off with a very basic outline that you trace onto your canvas and then walks you through every layer. You can also have it framed at the end (around $30 if I remember correctly.) Also noteworthy is Kevin's (the owner) incredible taste in music. He sets the mood up big time. He had the Smiths! I die for the Smiths. By the end of the class, everyone is happy and tipsy and walking around checking out what everyone else did. Its great that the final paintings for each person turned out so differently and reflected their style! I am going to try to come here every month it was the best experience ever! Walking out with our artworks makes the evening a nice memory. Of course, there always the debate as to whose painting is better and where to prominently hang our works of art for critics to see it in the best light. We are thinking they should be side by side in our restroom. Maybe the next time around we'll put them into a more prominent place. They run the booking system for the classes beautifully through the website. You get exactly what you bargain for and it is a fun and efficient process that builds the anticipation. They taught in stages of where I feel they could not be more clear and straight to the point. They handled the class very well!!!!! The crowd were great, and controlled with all the wine opening . The Painting Lounge is such an awesome place. I had always wanted to go to a place like this ever since I found one back home! I've been three times and done 2 separate paintings. All three times I had a great experience with the booking, painting, and staff! I drove all 3 times and had no trouble finding parking! There's a liquor store on the corner and a nice grocery store right beside Painting Lounge if you forgot to bring anything to drink (not that you have to!) If you want something to do afterwards, the Brooklyn winery and brewery are both near by if you want to get a drink/food afterwards. I used a voucer all three times - Google offers, a Painting Lounge gift certificate discount, or a Groupon/LivingSocial deal. It's easy to book online and enter your codes so you don't have to print anything out and take it with you. Once you get there, Kevin just checks your name off the class roster. There's a very easy and well set up calendar online as well as a Facebook page so you can see what you're getting yourself into. Once you come in, you put on a smock and start tracing over a pre-drawn stencil + carbon paper onto a canvas (so helpful). Then the instructor will come around and give you acrylic paint and there's already water and brushes on the table. The instructor is usually very helpful and will repeat any instructions if you fall behind. Just have fun! Awesome place for people of any skill level. You can't mess this up! It's a paint by numbers kind of place taught by a really laid back instructor that helps guide you through the process. When you first walk in there are two tables with painting canvases and easels set up ready for painting. A rough sketch of the painting is placed over the canvas where you use contact paper to transfer the lines onto the canvas. From there you're ready to start mixing colors and start painting! We did the stars over Paris painting this past Sunday 12-22-13 and had a blast. We stayed longer than the 2.5 hours and they didn't rush us out or anything. After you're done you can get your painting framed for a nominal fee, but we chose not to. I would recommend this place as an alternative date option for everyone. I visited Painting Lounge last week Friday for my Mom's birthday and we had a great time! It was very easy to book online. Bernard was our host and he was wonderful! He made us comfortable from the time we arrived. We had a party of 6 and all sat near each other, poured our wine/champagne (that we brought) and got to painting! There is a fridge that you can use to chill any beverages as well as plastic cups and cork screw openers. There was music playing in the background, great playlist by the way Bernard! Bernard took photos of us, with our camera and theirs, which was great as we had a ton of memories from the night. Bernard took his time with the instructions and kept us all on track. Had an amazing time here for my friends birthday celebration. It was actually at night time (started at 10PM) and not in the day. I was nervous of going to a painting activity because I am not artistic. My friend had booked the entire large room and a personal instructor for a party of 20. For every stool, there was a canvas, a plate of paint, three brushes and an apron provided for each person. My friend had chosen a tropical painting - two palm trees with the sun reflecting over the water. In the end, it was easy to follow since the instructor broke up the painting in parts. The instructor would also come around and let us know if we needed to make any modifications on our painting. It is BYOB! So don't forget to buy a bottle before coming here. Painting Lounge's BYOB painting sessions are fun and an awesome way to relax. I have been to 3 sessions so far: the Bob Ross mountain landscape, Vincent Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and Henri Matisse's "Flowers on Chair." You get all the necessary supplies with your reservation fee. For the mountain landscape piece, Kevin (I think he's the owner--at the very least he's usually the instructor) even provided a plastic version of the knife Bob Ross was famous for using on his mountains. I found myself really getting into it with adding details for the "Flowers on Chair" session and the staff let me stay past the 2-hour mark until I was satisfied. Kevin is always very patient, kind and encourages both your painting and drinking! He has a mini-fridge for chilling whatever beverages you bring in, corkscrew and cups. Fun atmosphere, very laid back crowd, friendly folks, and overall a great night. The music playlist was a nice mix and during class, people are encouraged to talk to each other. The instructor was friendly and (very) patient and made the class enjoyable. We did this on a Sunday night. My painting partner supposedly was a professional artist and sold work in 4th grade at an art fair (animal still life). I paint for fun very sporadically (usually by copying a photograph or someones work), so what I am saying is, no real talent or skill set is needed. If you are an advanced painter though, you would still enjoy this class. We picked a gender neutral painting. We threw in a competitive spin and decided to make innocent friends choose their favorite painting (via text in a side by side comparison). Overall we came away with 2 pretty good looking paintings. The paint drys fast, and you walk out the door with your masterpiece. If you are considering this, book it. It is worth it. (I purchased this on Gilt for a cool 50% off). read more

What fun! If you've never painted a day in your life, you can come to Painting Lounge and still produce a beauty! My aunt, my sisters and I ventured out to Williamsburg on a FREEZING Friday night (at the height of the polar vortex) for the Starry Night over Brooklyn Bridge class. Every stroke and detail is already planned out for you. All you really need to do is follow the instructor and you're guaranteed to come out of Painting Lounge with a decently good looking replica. They provide the stretched canvas, the acrylic paint, three heavily used brushes, a smock and the talent. All you need to do is bring yourself and copy. :) The three hour time frame given to you is definitely not enough to finish this particular elaborate painting but our instructor was very nice and let us stay a bit longer. Another thing to note is that at the time of our class, the BYOB part was suspended. I think the city is cracking down on these wine and painting classes. :( read more
