It's date night! I saw their great deal on Groupon then wanted to enroll in the session that was painting the "Brooklyn Bridge at Sunset." So I had to send an email with our voucher numbers to reserve our seats. Luckily, we snatched street parking directly outside since commercial parking on that block ends at 6pm (yay!). Class starts at 7pm. After climbing one set of stairs, we walk into the studio. Nikki, our instructor, greets us then provides a quick overview of the space. We select our seats, hang our coats, grab aprons and two slices of pizza per person. Who doesn't love a pizza party? I appreciated the prompt start, because it was a two-hour experience. The class itself (with 10 students including us) was pretty cool and relaxing. It was easy to "paint along," because there was a well-positioned TV that was connected to a camera over her canvas. She gave oral instructions as she demonstrated the techniques. We did our best to replicate what she just demonstrated as she walked around to give individual pointers. My right arm was definitely tired due to the repeated strokes lol, but we had a great time. Clean up was a breeze and it didn't take long for our canvases to dry. We're excited to come back for more classes. Aside from painting your own piece, you can also browse the pieces available for purchase. I can't think of a better way to adorn the bare white walls of our home than with DIY pieces. read more

What an amazing class! I pat myself on shoulder for discovering this place and brought three people to explore the inner artist of ourselves, with bottles of wine that is. The instructor was very helpful and let us do "free style" if you want. She checked on everyone, refilled colors, answered questions. I'm pretty fantastic at tracing, cutting paper, coloring, and writing the alphabet by hand. I'm not at all fantastic at drawing or painting. While I won't go so far as to say that I'm suddenly fantastic at painting after taking a class at Paint Along, I will say I'm much more confident and find painting to be really fun now!! A class is usually an hour and a half long and costs $45. BUT, if you check the website on the day of a class and they still have openings available, you will only have to pay $35! You can sign up on their events calendar (http://www.rezclick.com/paintalongny/index.php?flag_menu_index=calendar_php) and choose which painting you'd like to paint. The price includes paints, a canvas, brushes, a wash cup, and an apron (well, you'll only be able to take home the canvas, but it's still a good deal). Each class is BYOB. I usually become red and sleepy after consuming alcohol, so I stayed far away from the bottles of wine being passed around because I wanted to create as good of a painting as I could. My classmates who did drink seemed to have a grand time, though! Paint Along provides plastic cups and bottle openers! The instructor broke down steps in an easy-to-understand manner: she gave very good tips on spacing and shape-making, showed us how to mix paints accurately, painted an example painting for us, and made it clear that we could customize our paintings to our liking. She was very patient and a good multi-tasker, especially because she had to juggle teaching us, refilling paints, and helping those who needed a lending hand (guilty as charged). As Kristen D. mentioned, it may be nice to have an assistant who could help with these tasks, especially when a class is at full capacity. This is an exciting, unique idea for a great date night, some time alone, or with a group of friends. When we all observed our classmates' paintings at the end of class, we were amazed to see how there were little touches of personality here and there in brushstrokes and color choices! I now know why people paint. It is extremely carthartic. There is nothing like putting colours on a blank canvas. A time to start over, a new start, a clean slate. You get to narrate the story with all your imagination and fantasies. You can yell at the canvas with a bright orange, make love to it with a expressive yellow, smile with a bursting purple or drown out your sorrows with a fatal black. I never thought I could even begin to harness the art of painting...until now. My friend likes to paint and wanted to show me how to do it. I am ever grateful to her. She showed me how to release emotions in a healthy way. Learning healthy coping skills is progress to Nirvana. The art studio is in an office building. At first, I imagined the art studio to be sterile and office-like. But I was pleasantly surprised. Once you enter the suite, it is warm and bright. The instructor (her name is escaping me right now) is friendly and extremely nice. She was playing some 90s alternative rock. Two thumbs up already. For all the workshops, you can BYOB. She suggested a wine shop 2 blocks away. The instructor is easy to follow and always willing to help. And although I am a novice, I created a half-decent painting. I really enjoyed splashing colours on a blank canvas. Now I just need to get a bigger canvas and do it like Jackson Pollock. A great first date spot and a fine evening with a fellow painter. Amazing one-of-a-kind experience! I came here with my girlfriends on a Saturday and we had such a lovely time. I'm already planning my second visit. Tickets are $45 for the two hour class. I wish class was a little longer bc toward the end felt a little rushed but still had an excellent final piece. It was lots of fun and best part is that it's BYOW. We learned, painted and sipped on wine/champagne. I wish I could do this everyday. The instructor was so friendly, patient and helpful. Afterwards some of us still had wine left and found out there is an Indian place around the corner that's also BYOB so we brought over our bottles and finished them there along with some yummy Indian food. Paint Along is the perfect outing for a small group who's sick of the same old same old. Let me start this off right-- BYOB. We popped a couple bottles of wine and went for some light sipping, just to get those hyper-critical jitters out of our system. Then it was time for the painting to begin! The instructor was super friendly and made us all feel confident we'd walk out of there with something beautiful. She threw on some music and started the class, walking us through the painting step by step. It was funny to feel everyone hesitate with each new color she told us to throw onto the canvas, and I couldn't help but take a peek around the room to see how my piece compared. Soon enough a really lovely painting was done, all by my hands but not by my inspiration (which I am TOTALLY cool with). I'll definitely be back to Paint Along. I am no painter. I can't even sketch! But, when one of my coworkers suggested we should do one of these BYOB + painting, I thought, well why not, it's fun... We came here on a Monday night to paint "Dorothy the cow" and I have to say, now, we're picasso! We are going to have an office face off to vote for the best painting! I have to thank our instructor for this wonderful painting I painter (for the first time I'm proud to say, I'll keep this!, in fact, i'm hanging this in my cube tomorrow!) Our instructor helped us step by step and explained to us how to mix colors to get the effect we want. I'm very satisfied. The price is $45 for 2 hours which includes canvas, paint, brushes, apron and instructors. I do have to admit, $45 is a little pricy, and I know a little trick. I took this class to celebrate my good friend's birthday and to have fun with painting. Our teacher Jessie was wonderful. She had lots of patience and guided us through the whole process of our painting experience. We had a awesome time and it was relaxing too. I can't say enough good things about Paint Along and their classes. I also can't pretend to be a good painter; in fact the last time I painted may have been middle school. That didn't stop me from having a great time and creating a master piece over the weekend. The instructors at Paint Along are great. They were able to break down the images into easy-to-create shapes and sections and made the whole group of about 14 feel comfortable and confident as soon as we started. They moved us along at a steady pace and before we knew it the 2 hours was up and we all had our own art to take home. As countless others have said in the reviews, this is a great date spot. The only caution I have is that you may get too focused on your art that you forget to talk or drink the wine you brought. For us, this resulted in laughs, chugging to finish our glasses of forgotten wine, and plenty of fun. I'm looking forward to any excuse I can to get back here and make some more art. read more

Came here on a Friday night on a whim with the girlfriend, and ended up having a great time. Everything you would need for painting (and drinking) is provided and is in great condition. The location was easy to find, and the studio was big enough for a class of 20+. Ashley (instructor) was very engaging, informative, and provided a structured approach to paining a fairly difficult piece for two inartistic novices. Coming to Paint Along was the perfect start to a perfect Saturday! I had heard of some painting and drinking thing before but didn't know much about it. So when a friend suddenly had an extra ticket, I was down! Paint Along is a small "studio" in a converted apartment. You bring your own libations to drink -- everyone in my class brought wine. You can probably bring liquor but it's not really that kind of party. The teacher provides wine openers, cups, and napkins. There's a wine shop next door (super nice people!), so you can even buy something on the way upstairs. The classes are assigned a painting per session. You'll know when you sign up what your painting will be, so you should choose something you'll be proud to display in your apartment. My session was Starry Night Redux, which is a simplified version of Van Gogh's Starry Night. You start with a blank white canvas, and the instructor walks you through setup, which is drawing your guidelines with chalk. From there, you get walked through painting each section, moving from lightest colors to darkest colors. If you need more paint, napkins, etc, she'll quickly bring it over. There were paintings of the Redux and the original all over the room, so I looked at both and made my redux a little more fancy. I'm a person who can barely draw stick figures, and I was surprised at how intensely I got into the painting. It's so relaxing. I planned to go in and get drunk, but I barely touched my wine because I was concentrating so hard. There was a large group of girls in the class that day, but outside of annoying girl conversation ("I'm so tired of seeing Clare Danes' crying face!"), everyone was really involved in their work. At the end, the instructor is happy to take pictures of your group. Why I gave 4 stars instead of 5: 1) I thought the pacing was a little off... we started 15 minutes late, waiting for late arrivals, but didn't get those 15 minutes on the back end. We were pretty rushed at the end to finish painting. So I'd suggest a 3 hour class (instead of 2 hours) if you can. 2) I sat in the front and had an okay view of the instructor and her painting, but it might have been nice if she had a helper walking around, checking on everyone, giving advice, and squeezing out more paint. But the bottom line is that I loved my time here. This is such a different and interesting way to spend a day... if you're looking for fresh date ideas, try Paint Along! I plan to bring my mom here when she visits, and if we have another great time I'm happy to upgrade to 5 stars. read more

I hear all the time people who hate their jobs, say they're treated unfairly and I just wanted to say from an employee point of view Paint Along is fantastic. It's really great meeting new people every class, we have a great time in the BYOB classes and ofcourse it's really great teaching new or expert artists some tricks and having everyone leave happy. Its really exciting having new people come in or teaching a brand new painting. Frankly, the most fun is at the end when people leave proud of their work From what i have seen and done, Paint Along tries super hard to make your time as fun as possible- and I for one love the environment, working to cool tunes and great clients as well! read more

My painting came out nice and I had a good time. The only frustrating thing is that there should be more than one person working there. There wasn't enough time to actually keep up with the teacher and the last thirty minutes was extremely rushed. The teacher was explaining, painting her own, refilling paint, cleaning spills, and answering questions (for people who were'nt paying attention so she had to repeat herself 20x for each step). If there was one extra person working with her to walk around and help people, we probably would have gotten through it in time. Also, classes should be scheduled further apart because if you go over the time and the teacher still has 5 more steps to go over - too bad. Because they need to get you out of there and clean up for the next group. There is no time for error with the way this place was set up. The staff was patient and kind and my painting came out nice, but if the last thirty minutes were'nt rushed it would be ten times as beautiful. P.S. This isn't a very relaxing thing to do. Found this place through living social, went for my class today, and I couldn't be happier! The instructor was easy to follow, super nice, very knowledgeable about art, accommodating, and just overall wonderful. You have the option of bringing your own wine to the class, but seeing as how it was sunday afternoon (and I had stayed out till 5am the night before drinking soju and singing karaoke), sunday afternoon wine was not happening for me. I was throughly entertained nonetheless. We went through the painting step by step, and our instructor broke down the steps VERY well. She was also there to troubleshoot anyone who was having difficulties. The best part of the class was afterwards looking at all the paintings. EVERYBODY'S looked amazing and unique, even those who claimed they couldn't paint... Makes me love the art of art The classes are regularly $45, but with living social it was only $25. They're about 2 hours long, and all materials are provided (even the smocks!). They also host parties.. AND they can customize a painting for the party. Um, next birthday party.. DONE! Such a fun activity! I came here with 2 friends... we all got the Bloomspot deal for $22, and I must say, it was more than worth it! My 2 friends and I might be 3 of the least talented artists in NYC, and my painting came out amazingly well! Our instructor was super sweet and very helpful. She led the class with step-by-step, easy to follow instructions on how to paint each part of the painting (which was necessary for me, since I had NO idea what I was doing). My friends and I brought our own wine, which I highly recommend to enhance the experience :-) Right when I left, I called my mom and told her I want to come back to Paint Along with her as soon as possible, because I know she'd love it! One of the best deals in NYC! I have already taken 3 classes and signed up for 4 more! They give you everything you need, the inspiration (example), instruction, paintbrushes, canvas, paint, a space, an apron, and fun! Just bring yourself and a bottle of wine to enjoy yourself or to share! They also provide cups and a bottle opener so no worries with that. Then, you get to take home your masterpiece and show off all your artistic abilities! I have had 3 different instructors, including Marti (one of the owners) and they were ALL very helpful and friendly. The max amount of students I think is 14 so while the space is a little small when the class is full, it makes for more camaraderie. This activity is great for dates, first dates, a group of friends, or ALONE! I highly recommend Paint Along...there are MANY different pictures/classes to choose from and if the one you want is full, they'll do it again another time, just keep checking the calendar. Our instructor was patient, funny and kind. She gently guided us to paint red poppies against a layered blue sky with the sun glowing in one side. Her words were encouraging and she wielded an able brush. When my classmate accidentally dripped black paint onto his canvas, she came to the rescue and removed the dark blob. I held my brush in one hand and a plastic cup of red wine in the other. I noticed my strokes became more shaky as the class wore on, but I cared less. I felt my inhibitions drop and my inner artist shake free, splashing all over the canvas and on the top and the sides. Our paintings were of the same image, but at the end I felt like we painted our souls. Like the other reviewer, I purchased a class with Groupon at a discount. At $45 regular price per session, I think the price point might be a little high for me to go again soon. After all, with $90 I could buy paints, canvas and have my own in home boozy art session. But then again, I would have to clean up afterward and Paint Along is all inclusive. Maybe I'll be back to re-imagine the Eiffel tower. read more

OMG I found this place from one of those Group Buy websites. I believe it was Groupon. It's housed in an office building and its basically a small office converted into a painting studio. Able to accomodate about 10-15 people, the class was full! You get to choose what you want to paint from their calendar on their website. But everyone paints the same theme - unless you're like me & my friend and choose to switch up the colors! That night - 4 girlfriends and I met after work, brought a bottle of wine and painted a pair of lovebirds. You get so into it , we almost forgot to drink the wine. The instructor makes it very easy to follow and simple. Taking you step by step through the process of outlining to shading and creating light & shadow with the acrylic paints. You get an unlimited supply of paints and the instructor is there to help you if you need some one on one help! :) I'd highly recommend it, a night with girlfriends and a great way to indulge in some creativitiy! read more

Been here 4 times now (finally used my last credit). I did the Poppy Field, The Kiss, London Affair, and Starry Night. All in all, it's just okay as long as you don't expect too much and really depends on the teacher you end up with. So let me review each of my classes: Poppy Field - the picture was not what I was expecting. The actual work was much simpler than the picture. But I was mostly disappointed with the teacher. They had this guy substituting last minute and you can tell he did not want to be there on a Sunday. Not impressed by his drawing skills either. By the last hour of the class, he was chatting about sports with one of the guys who you can tell got dragged into the class by his girlfriend. Totally ruined the experience. The Kiss & London Affair - these were my favorite classes (otherwise my review would've been lower). The teachers were great (Nikki and ???). I believe they were the senior teachers and they're very professional. Both even stayed extra hour to give us time to refine our paintings, which you almost always need for these harder (more detailed) works. I really wish Paint Along would post the teacher names so I can only take classes with the ones I like. Starry Night - I've been wanting to do this for the longest time, and was the most disappointed because 1) it should've been pre-sketched since the actual painting takes a long time 2) the teacher was in a rush. we didn't even have time to finish the black tree (which is the most important part of the painting) because she wanted to finish at exactly 5pm. did not enjoy this at all. =( So for anyone interested in these classes, my tips are 1) start with something simple if you don't have any art background and work your way up 2) bring your own brushes because the brushes they provide were very worn out 3) try to get there early to get a seat in the front so you can see the details and not get cramped in the back (their seats are way to close to each other and if anyone put too much strength on their paining the entire table shakes. read more

Super fun! I went with a group of girlfriends, and we, too, purchased through Groupon. The instructor was knowledgeable and helpful, and paints were refilled quickly. She also took questions whenever we needed something clarified. It's totally different than what I normally do, and that made it extra fun. I'm the farthest thing from a painter (perhaps only worse at singing), and even I was able to follow along and end up with a product that excited me. I think that my only suggestion is for the instructor to tell us a little bit more about herself - not strictly down to business. She has a really cool thing going on, and I would love to know more about how she got here. It would be great to make it a little bit more personal and personable. read more

I came here twice this spring. Once with a friend and even once with my boyfriend. We had a great time. The time with my boyfriend we painted sailboats and we happened to be the only ones in the class but she taught the class anyways. We got alot of one-on-one attention and it was a great time. Even when I came the time before we still had alot of help when we asked for it. It was a relaxing way to spend a friday evening and our paintings are great as wall art in the new apartment. You can bring a bottle of wine or bubbly and enjoy being creative. We're going back to this place on Friday but with his mom and I think she'll really enjoy it. This will be our third time back. I had a great time here as it was my first paint & sip class. Since coming here, I have gone to the painting lounge a week later, and then a paint nite at a local bar after that. I have to say, this class and place was the best experience. It's right by Murray Hill, close to all the Indian restaurants on lex avenue with liquor store right next door. It's on the second floor and it's a beautiful clean, intimate studio, kind of like visiting a friend's home. The class size is perfect and everyone faces forward towards the instructor as opposed to other places where you have row by row and someone else is sitting right across from you with the back of their easel to you. The intimate class size allows for you to actually learn technique, see your instructor's paint strokes and be given feedback if you like. The lighting is also appropriate-- the paint events at bar venues have horrible lighting. This is the biggest difference since in the other places, you can't really see the instructor's paint stokes when they teach and don't feel as confident. I painted Splatter Poppies taught by Nikki with my cousins and it was great. You can really customize your color palette and learn new techniques like getting those abstract splatters on canvas. I loved my work at the studio and loved it even more when I hung it at home. My only hope it that they have more visually interesting works available to paint. I loved paint along! It's such a fun concept, the instructor is really nice, patient and helps you with any problems you have. This would be perfect for private parties (birthday, bachelorette etc). Everyone walks away with a masterpiece. Highly recommended! read more

They have a multitude of resources for your painting experience. First wine and paint experience. Went here with a group of 15 girls for a work event (celebrating women's history month) The instructor was engaging, funny and detailed. We chose to do a painting of the empire state. Upon arrival the painting area was set up all we had to do was arrange our drinks and food. The place was very clean and well kept. Would definitely return here and recommend to others as a group activity. read more

This is painting class for dummies. The instructor tried to use a "cookie-cutter" method to teach. My class was 2-hour long and I felt extremely rushed. Three-hour class would have been a better choice. The space was so small and crowded for group class. I have my friend's arm rubbing my arm the whole time. The table/chair set up was so uncomfortable. Get some real painting easels please!! You are only given 3 different sizes of brushes. The whole experience was mediocre!! My painting looks so "unfinished." The two stars are for friendly staff. The instructor was helpful at the beginning refilling paint, answering questions, etc. She then completely ignored us in the last 30 minutes. Most people in my group class can't seem to keep up with painting and listening to instruction at the same time. I felt like I was taking a test when the instructor said in the end, "I'll be collecting the paint brushes in 2 minutes." It reminded me of my high school teacher saying "pencils down." read more
