I've been going to paint lounge since as early as 2016, but it's my first visit to this location. It's a cute studio (possibly not as large as some other locations). Good instructor. Fun class. Prices are always great and it's byob, so it's a plus.

I decided to try the Painting Lounge with a few of my friends to celebrate my birthday. We had a session for 5pm on a Sunday. At this time, the building is not unlocked, so pay attention to the address and buzz in. You may have to wait a bit! We signed up for a painting called Spring Moonrise Over the Dock and TJ was our instructor. It was a smaller class with probably 15 or so people. The ambiance was terrific, especially with the 90s throwbacks! TJ also did a good job modeling and explaining the techniques to be used as well as encouraging people to do what feels best for them. The instruction went at a rapid pace, so it is probably not the best for beginners. The thing is that I understand why TJ needed to go so quickly to stay within the class time limit including drying time. I just felt like I was always 2-3 steps behind. The other thing I would like to see would be individual feedback, especially for the trickier techniques. My final critique is of the specific image. TJ's final image did not look like the model on the website for the cherry blossoms. I know it's minor, but I have tried to do DIY painting following YouTube videos, and the blossoms are always where I messed up, so I was disappointed with my outcome because of that specifically. Don't get me wrong, our images look fine and reasonably like the advertised image. This session was discounted, so it was $30 instead of the regular $50. For the $30 price point, it was overall a great experience, and I would be down to try again!

This is a very fun activity for groups, friends' night out, corporate team building, etc. I came to the Chelsea location on a Saturday night. The studio is located on the fourth floor. I believe the same company has 3 or 4 other locations throughout the city so it's convenient to pick the one closest to you. I booked online when they had $34 tickets on sale. Booking was easy but I didn't get a confirmation email or anything. I emailed a copy of the invoice to myself from checkout just in case but when I arrived, they only needed my name to confirm my reservation. We came as a group of 3. There were only about a dozen people in the class, but the studio can accommodate large groups and had room for 40 people or more. They have lots of wine openers and cups. You can BYOB but no hard liquor. They also provide plastic aprons that provide pretty good clothing coverage but I would still recommend wearing clothes you don't mind getting paint on. The artist did a fantastic job of walking us through the painting. We did an NYC skyline nightscape. As expected for painting novices, it was intimidating at first but she made every step easy and fun. She was motivating throughout the class and encouraged people's creativity, unique approaches, and diversions from the template artwork. She played a great music playlist of oldies hits and sang and vibed along to the music. She was attentive to turn down the tunes when she was giving instructions so everyone could hear her. Gave 4 stars only because the set up was a tiny bit cramped. Our easels were shoulder to shoulder with little space in between. It was hard to know where to place my wine glass to avoid risking splashes from the paint brush cups. Also, once we finished, it felt a little rushed to leave and we didn't have time to relax and take in our paintings or enjoy the atmosphere for a bit longer. But I totally understand that there may have been another class right after ours. I definitely recommend this experience! The artist was lovely and did a stellar job coaching us!

Please make sure you go to the right location since they have multiple locations. We arrived little late but we still have enough time to finish our painting. This is my gf first time painting she enjoys it so much! Instructor Anna is super friendly and shestep by step instruction. She also play her own music playlist which is all most popular songs. Highly recommend for you. If you have 2 hours , enjoy this fun and relaxing time painting with your loved one.

Fun class and instructor was detailed and informative every step.friendly for beginner.love it and definitely will do it again!

My friend and I had such a great time here that we're already planning for our next class. This was my first time at a BYOB paint and sip class. I was nervous since I have zero experience painting, but instructor Sabrina is a graduate from Parsons and is very knowledgable. I ended up "messing" up my painting at the beginning and she came over to help me when asked. She is also patient and will demo a part again if requested. There is everything you need for a BYOB including a fridge, bottle opener, and cups. I would recommend coming in at least 15 minutes earlier than your class time to get your bottle chilled. Check-in was very easy; you just needed to give your name. I came here with a Groupon and the online process for scheduling was hassle-free. I called on a weekend regarding an inquiry and someone picked up on the second ring. The person on the line also told me that they have deals every Sunday and so I should not waste my Groupon on the ones already on sale. The customer service here is pretty good. The venue itself is spacious so that you are not elbowing the person next to you. It is in an office building and I had no trouble getting in. The place was kept clean and there are two sinks. My favorite part about this whole experience was the ambiance and crowd it attracted. Everyone participating was very nice and nonjudgemental. I never felt rushed and it was very inviting.

I came here with some friends for my first ever in person (not on Youtube) paint and sip. The place was a little confusing to find initially but such a great experience. Everyone is set up at their own easel with paint prepped and given a smock/apron to wear in order to their protect clothes. The class is BYOB (not including hard liquor)- so of course we each bring a bottle of red. Napkins, cups, bottle and wine openers are all provided. Our instructor, Franny, did a wonderful job at leading the class in our painting. I really liked how she painted with us while an example of the finished product was up right next beside her. This made it easy to understand and follow. We all had so much fun and were happy to have signed up. I will definitely be returning!

We had a really great time. Our instructor, Farrah, lead a fun room, letting us do our thing a little and be unique in our interpretations, while still teaching the style and techniques of the intended painting subject. Music was fun for us. The 3 of we're excited to hang out and do something quirky and different and had even more fun than we expected.

Came here with a friend for our first sip and paint class and it was super fun! The instructor was super nice and walked us step by step how to paint each layer of the drawing. I really liked how it was BYOB as well, and the prices are really reasonable! It was a great experience and I'd definitely go back.

I ended up coming on a Friday night with my boyfriend for a two hour class and had such a fun time. The class only has around ~10 people, but it looks like each class can fit ~40ish people. The class was super easy to follow and there was enough time to talk while waiting for layers of paint to dry. Our instructor, Vee, was hilarious! Loved her class, and she laughed at my better half's bad jokes so serious props to her. The Painting Lounge is BYOB, so do not forget your wine! They have plastic cups, wine openers, and a fridge, and they also sell water in case you forget yours. There are cubbies for you to store your belongings to keep stuff clean. Also don't forget to wear clothes you don't mind getting dirty. There's a few NY locations to pick from, all of which are pretty easy to get to areas. You sign up for the class ahead of time and can pick based on the painting that's going to be taught. All in all, I had a blast and will definitely be back. I love that this is a great place to go alone, on a date, with friends, or even for a birthday party. Good for even the most stubborn of guys.

Everyone must have the Paint Lounge experience once in their life. Searching for something out of the box to celebrate my friend's birthday, I stumbled upon a Groupon deal for $35 class, Bring Your Own Bottle in Chealsea. 14TH ST was the perfect location for everyone attending from Canarsie, Southeast Queens and New Jersey. I loved the ease of the Web reservation and details. I chose the Van Gogh painting class and was excited. Upon entering building 39 on 14th ST you must enter the Pass Code. I was greeted by a regular artist attending the class, she assured me that this would be a night to remember for me. I met Jon the Painter instructor. He quickly found me on the attendance roster and immediately I began tracing my Van Gogh. The set up was perfect. Ample corkscrews for wine bottles, my paint station equipped with a denim smock and everything I needed. Jon was very thorough walking around the class to demonstrate and make sure we were all producing our own replica masterpiece. I felt at ease and appreciated that he taught without being overly critical. I learned some skills I didn't know I had. Mid way through, I became tipsy and made an awesome painting now hanging in my bedroom. This is a great idea for Date Night, Girls Night or a solo relaxing evening.

I came once and painted Hopper's lighthouse. I really enjoyed the format of the class - very laid back with lots of one-on-one instruction if you want it. You can pretty much take your own pace, too. This is a great option for some friend bonding. Or a date! It's a different type of activity than just dinner and booze. Also, you do not need much artistic skill to do it. I promise! You need to know how to follow directions. And you'll end up with a masterpiece. Be sure to go with a discount, though. There are lots floating around Groupon and such. There's no reason to pay full price. You'll have a great time!

    The Start of Starry Night
    Chris E.

My 1st ever painting experience and it was awesome! I signed up with a few friends for the Starry Night painting (using an online deal), which was a 3 hour lesson. The 2 hour lessons are $50 ($25 with an online deal) and the 3 hour lessons are $65 ($25 + $15 with the online deal). We arrived a bit late at 7:05ish and the class was already tracing out the painting so to those who might be late, Word of Advice # 1 - get there on time! For those curious about the gender split, the makeup of the class was predominantly female, but I would say at least 35% of the class were males (most coming with their girlfriends). The classroom was a bit cramped because everyone was sitting next to each other. I imagined the set up to be a bit different where everyone would be facing the front, but that wasn't the case as everyone had to turn to their side to face the front. My friends and I sat towards the back since we were the last to arrive and unfortunately it was a bit hard to see the painting that the instructor was painting so Word of Advice #2 - sit towards the front to get a better experience! All night I felt I was playing catch up and since this location is BYOB, we brought some alcohol with us, but it was tough mixing the drinks with the lack of time we had and trying to paint simultaneously. There were a few people who brought alcohol with them, but ultimately it's difficult to sit and enjoy your drink because the class was pretty aggressive since Starry Night takes a long time to paint. Just when I finished a set of instructions, the next instructions were laid upon us so it was one after the other. Time just flew! The instructor was very good though and he gave very specific instructions. He was very clear and walked around with his painting once in awhile so that everyone could see up close what he did. If anyone needed extra paper towels to clean their brushes or extra paint, he was readily available to provide them for people. At the end, when everyone is done, you can go and get some clear bags to cover up your painting to take home, which is a very good idea. It was definitely a cool and fun experience and I'm already looking to come back!

The TL;DR version for those who have already made the decision to go: - Do shop designer sample sales to look just as chic as the daughters of the Middle Eastern elite and Asian jetset, but for 50-75% off retail price. (Download the Sample Closet app to get alerts on all ongoing and forthcoming sample sales.) - Do take advantage of classes offered by other New School programs. - Do apply to be an RA (Resident Advisor in the dorms) for the chance to get FREE HOUSING IN NYC. I REPEAT, FREE HOUSING. NO RENT, PEOPLE. (Also, your federal loans accrue less interest.) - Don't turn into one of those "Can't-Live-Without-NYC" New Yorkers. (Please refer to the excellent metaphor of self-imposed concentration camp victim and prison guard in the 1981 Louis Malle film, My Dinner With André.) 2. For those who may be on the fence about going: As a prospective undergrad, what attracted me most about Parsons --- besides its location in New York --- was its affiliation with The New School. This is one great advantage that Parsons has over other design schools that do not operate under the umbrella of a larger institution. Experimentation and crossing disciplines is an important part of the undergraduate learning experience. For my part, I took writing classes at Lang, filmmaking classes at the General Studies school, and had a bit part in a Lang theater production (SO much fun!). I also, with my team, won an award with LVMH and took advantage of the internship listings available exclusively to Parsons students, resulting in three years at a prestigious publications house. I humblebrag to make a point, which is that the possibilities and opportunities are endless IF YOU SEEK THEM. Otherwise, unlike a campus college, no one is going to reach out to you to offer you options, options that could turn into distractions that take you away from your studies. The Parsons experience is the city experience; you are very much a part of the fabric of New York, commuting and working and being broken into the crazy-busy life of a New Yorker just like the rest of its inhabitants. However, if you think that you need to study at Parsons --- or in the city, for that matter --- to get internships that will lead to jobs, that is not always the case. My first job out of college had nothing to do with my internships. And interestingly enough, my friends who went to schools in the city had more circuitous routes to their current jobs than friends who went to school out-of-state. These out-of-state friends didn't have any connections in high places; except for the ones in finance who were recruited at campus job fairs, the rest just applied persistently for their opportunities. The biggest con in my perception of The New School as an alumna is that it seems to operate more as a business and less as a school committed to the quality of its education. There are more adjunct and part-time instructors than full-time and many of them, I'm sorry to say, are incompetent and far too busy with their own careers aside from teaching to bother with their classes. (This would be marketed by the school as, "Learn from professionals who are connected to the real world," or something to that effect.) I suspect that whatever profit is being made is invested into its makeover in order to attract more students, and thus more money. As soon as I'd graduated, the school started calling me and MY PARENTS asking for donations! What gall! I assume selectivity rates are generally low, esp for international students who pay twice the already exorbitant tuition. If there's anything that my senior portfolio class taught me, it's that four years of design instruction does NOT drive good taste or basic design sensibilities into some students' heads. Even for a "to each, her own" kind of person like me, some of these final presentations were just downright embarrassing and did not justify the price tag on their education. I believe that true talent will find its way to opportunity, no matter which school you're coming from. You should consider Parsons only if you can afford it without taking from your middle-class parents' savings or from your future. Otherwise, consider a campus school where you can dedicate yourself wholly to your craft and enjoy being a kid for a little longer. You can apply for summer internships in the city and relish New York that way, without feeling burnt out.

Another problem is the atelier teaching method with few expceptions often corrupts individual talent resulting in work that looks very similar. I really looked forward to my evenings at the NY Academy of Art. Adam Cross, the instructor, was phenomenal. He was an absolute expert on the matter, and provided constructive criticism, always in a kind manner, basically just giving you tips on how to improve and sharing ideas for things you can do to make your drawing or painting better. He made the class fun and interactive and was genuinely interested and passionate about teaching us art. I did not have prior experience coming into this class, and I didn't feel lost at all. It is slow-paced (in a good & most necessary way) and really teaches you the foundations. Homework is given for those who want it, and I was pretty impressed with the drawings I could make by Week 4! I highly highly recommend this class for beginners. You will be stunned at the work you've produced by the end of it. PS: we also took a tour of the actual degree students' studios -- their work is stunning!! Makes me want to go to art school :)

Our daughter loves this place so our intention was to use our unused classes in the Fall when they re-opened but they were only willing to honor unused classes at 50% so we would have had to write them another large check with the risk of them getting closed again in the event of a second COVID wave. They said that they were struggling and not liquid enough and I feel for them I do but families are struggling too. These classes have always been a stretch for us. They said that they offered a summer option which was to cover unused classes but that didn't work for us schedule-wise. The Art Center a great place for kids but don't expect them to meet you halfway if an emergency pops up.
