I loved the class until I discovered that when we began using the blowpipes it was expected that we share them without sanitizing them between uses. Imagine blowing hard on a pipe with 10 other people also knowing those same pipes were used by previous people doing the same thing. The topic of cleaning the mouthpieces was never even brought up. Soooo if you're ok sharing a mouthpiece with strangers go for it! Otherwise beware. read more

A terrible experience and one of the instructors let a girl get badly burned without helping her; she was in tears and was treated like a wimp for what appeared to be a serious burn. Have traveled an hour+ to this place three times during open hours (called in advance twice), only to find it locked up (apparently they have no buzzer?) and David was openly cruel to one of the students for no apparent reason. There are far better places to practice your craft, and they aren't run by egomaniacs. Will never go back. For the record, when a Yelp tour comes through, just know that the staff here are making fun of you. read more

Do not book a class here! I had a class booked there last Sunday. I was nervous about going due to the corona virus. Thinking that I would get a person on the phone that understands, well NOT! They snarikily told me that viruses die at hot temperatures. Dont think the tube you put in your mouth is hot..she then came back to me that I could reschedule but I would be charged an extra 20 percent. That didnt feel fair at all, so I phoned again, once again someone had to phone me back. This time they said they would wave the fee, but they hoped I would come within 3 months I said I probably couldnt. The email confirmation still had that the credit was only valid for three months. I have had a small business for 26 years. Probably because I DO NOT treat my clients this way. DO NOT BOOK HERE! read more

We took the one day glass blowing workshop and managed to make some really cool stuff. The staff is so knowledgeable and patient. I spent the weekend at the Brooklyn Glass studio, Neon Sign making with teacher/artist , David Ablon and 2 fellow students. I was inspired by the work coming from the studios artists and various collaboration projects temporarily housed there (Blair Thurman being one of them) the facilities were wonderful also. Every year, my fiancé and I like to celebrate our birthdays by participating in some kind of fun event. This year, I signed us up for a private glass blowing lesson. When I called, I was greeted by an incredibly warm and welcoming spirit. Her name is Kat and she's the Managing Director of the school. Even though the classes were fully booked, she went the EXTRA mile by setting me up with a private lesson! I truly appreciate her efforts. She could have easily told me to book a later date but she knew I was trying to get this for my fiancé's birthday and he's SUPER special! She emailed me all the paperwork and made the payment process a breeze. On the day of our lesson, we met Josh, our teacher. Wow...what an AMAZING guy! He was funny, patient, enthusiastic, ULTRA supportive and so very kind. He allowed us to be as creative as we wanted to, all while answering all of my (many) questions and teaching us about the art of glass blowing. There's no question that we will return to Brooklyn Glass for more lessons. This place has SO MUCH to offer and the pricing is very reasonable when you put into perspective what you're getting and the length of the lessons. If you're on the fence about trying this place out...go for it! You won't regret it! You'll leave happy and when you see the fruits of your labor with all the pretty glass pieces...you'll always be reminded of the experience. I love events like New York Open House & Gowanus Open studios. They force us to get out of our little warm cocoons on a cold Sunday, and go out exploring. So it was yesterday when I picked a glass blowing shop to stop into. What an adventure. I knew nothing about glass blowing. I've never been to one of these places. Little did I know it involves million degree ovens, teamwork like coordination, and a whole bunch of creativity. When we stopped in, they were just starting a full on tour of the place. Along with about twenty other people, we watched one guy work the torch for a while, spinning & forming a glass piece like a master. And then we watched two different teams of two people work on making a decanter & a glass mug. Really exciting. Being right here in my backyard, I'll definitely be back to take one of there classes. Or to stop in for Hot Glass Cold Beer. What else!?!? read more

The introductory glass blowing class at Brooklyn Glass was a wonderful experience. I would highly recommend it to anyone even remotely interested in glass or just learning something new. The instructors were incredibly knowledgeable, friendly, and made the whole class a pleasure. They also tailored the level of "help" they provide. So whether you want a very hands-on "can't fail" type of lesson or whether you want to do it mostly yourself, they can adjust. It is hot - no fooling - but the instructors make sure you won't get hurt. They definitely put safety first, but fun is not far behind. I will be going back! read more

I came here for OHNY Weekend and it was so amazing! Everyone that works and creates there are so smart and talented. I also really admired their desire to push boundaries of what is possible with glass glass blowing and neon tubes. I want to come back for a class for sure, as soon as I make the money to do so. Signed up for tumblers (note the plural) class. Ended up making one tumbler, a flower (which broke before I picked it up) and a paperweight. Also turns out someone else snagged my tumbler, as the one I got wasn't the one I made. For the price (roughly $200) I went in expecting to make a few functional pieces, but instead left with one functional piece, one broken piece, and a paperweight. I wish I could give this place zero stars. Can we just say terrible morals. My husband bought tickets for he and his sister to take a class for Christmas. Well the day of a little over an hour before the class we got a call my father in law was being put into the icu and stopped breathing had to have an emergency procedure and is still fighting for his life currently. The tickets were almost 500 bucks we didn't want a refund just maybe some form of Credit towards a future class even if we had to pay a little extra because that would be the right thing to do. We are business owners ourselves and understand policies and that you can't always grant stuff but this was a life or death situation and this was the response we got. We reiterate 24 hr cancelation policy and they didn't offer anything. Talk about deplorable. read more

The instructors at Brooklyn Glass are immature and unprofessional, namely Alex. After being shown once how to do a project and use the tools, when I was working I was snapped at at every stage. Yet when a young, pretty girl was taking her turn, and made the same mistakes as me, not a bad word or criticism. She actually screwed up so badly she had to start over, but not a single negative comment, even when she was taking pictures when she was supposed to be helping. The stupid interaction and time eating jokes he and Jessie shared were a time waster and unprofessional. Looking around and later talking with other students, they agreed. If you have $200 to spend on learning a new craft, go someplace else. read more

I like to start that I am reviewing the weekend course Introduction to Glassblowing that was held on 05/3 and 5/4/14. This review should be discounted if you are interested in other classes, such as neon sign making or other workshops. The class itself was a decent amount of fun. Our instructors, Josh and Ben, really knew the craft and were more than helpful when it came to answering questions or offering suggestions on how to achieve certain effects. The source of my frustration stems from the management side; this class was overbooked. Even the instructors admitted to this and nothing was done to accommodate this error from the management side. There were 8 people in a course that should only have been 6. Only 2 work stations were made available for this class. In addition, the curriculum was also not adjusted to accommodate this large class size. Glass working is a fast process, but when there are 8 novices trying to learn at the same time, you essentially have 70% of the class waiting around doing nothing with two people would get hands on instruction. normally I would have no issue with this, but on the second day of class, we were all supposed to work on 2 projects. Because of the size of the class, 1/3 of the class, including myself essentially received a 1/2 day's experience. Our instructors were apologetic and invited us to stay a overtime to get our experience worth, but the studio was booked for another group immediately following ours. Its seemed like the instructors were completely unaware of this schedule as well. When I returned a few days later to pick up my work, I found the studio completely closed. I was told that I could pick up my work at anytime during the week that the studio was open. I showed up today at 7:00 PM (hours on the website said they would be open till 9:00) and was greeted with a locked gate. (It takes me over 2 hours to get to the studio). There was no signage or explanation as it was closed during a time when it should be open . I also called the office several times. No answer. Unless you live in South Brooklyn even getting to this place can be pretty difficult and judging from my class, most people were coming in from several hours away. If you are considering signing up for a course, try to make sure that there are no more than 3 people to work bench. Edit: I am updating the my review by 1 star. One of the owners did call back and apologized for locking up the main entrance when I wanted to pick up my work. Apparently there was a class there, but there was no phone and no buzzer, honestly they could have really fooled me and I did try shouting and causing a lot of noise to no answer. It is clear that he really cares, but my review still stands as it is. read more

I attended a 2 hour Glass Blowing class a few weekends back via HowAboutWe.com at Brooklyn Glass. The class was billed as semi-private, and ended up just me and my husband learning from a seasoned glass artist alone in the studio. We were taught the basics and really got the chance to do most everything ourselves by the end, with very little assistance. We created multiple glass items we could take home the next day. The facility is perfect and the class was so much fun....educational and interesting, something both of us have always wanted to do. Highly recommend Brooklyn Glass!! read more

I came here for a 3 hour glassblowing class with a Groupon for my wife's birthday last month. We had a GREAT time. I was skeptical, especially given how expensive the evening was, but I was blown away. The class was small - 8 participants, with one instructor and 2 TA's. Each person made a paperweight and a drinking glass. You could do as much or as little as you wanted. There was ample supervision and explanation. The one annoying part was one participant who showed up 20 minutes past the start time despite the voucher asking people to come 20 minutes early. So 10 people waited 40 minutes for this woman, who I thought should've been treated as a no-show given the cost of the activity ($150 each for 3 hours). Overall we had a GREAT time and would highly recommend. We enjoyed so much that we went back for the Hot Glass, Cold Beer fundraiser this past Saturday night. The place was very crowded and it was difficult to see/hear a lot of the demonstrations. Some sort of microphone would really help, especially in the main room. They also ran out of beer halfway through the event which was a real downer given that it was billed as all you can drink. If we hadn't come and had such an amazing time doing the class, I think we would have left very disappointed. read more

Brooklyn Glass is the best! I took at 1-day bead-making class with Laurie and it was a great experience! The first hour of the workshop consisted of picking out glass, going over the basics, and demonstrations. The rest of the time consisted of hands-on instruction with some occasional breaks for demonstration of additional techniques. The class allowed enough flexibility for students to make "requests" for specific things they wanted to work on. As an instructor, Laurie was extremely patient, knowledgable, helpful and encouraging! Since my first class, I have been back many times both to work with Laurie and to practice independently. The atmosphere at Brooklyn Glass is incredible. It's clear that everyone there truly has a passion for glass, whether they have been working with it for years or have started more recently. You can learn a ton just by talking to some of the other people there! Everyone, techs/instructors/management/students is so supportive and encouraging of each other; the constant positive energy makes Brooklyn Glass a great environment in which to work and create. read more

I did the neon intensive weekend with Kody and Daniel. It was so much fun! We had a small class where we all got a lot of hands-on experience learning the basics of neon glass bending. The atmosphere was professional yet fun. It was a great way to spend a weekend and BONUS of the class is you can go back and rent space in the facility to keep bendin'! Highly recommended. read more

AMAZING TIME!!!!! I did a group class with some co-workers and it was soooo much fun. The teachers were fantastic and so welcoming. To be honest I was a little scared, considering we were surrounded by molten glass, but they made me and everyone super comfortable and walked us through it all. I am gicing this business 5 stars but only 1 star for safety. They do provide safely glasses but no gloves (the tube socks that are recommended really do nothing) and there is quite a bit of broken glass on the floor. Someone in my party had to get three stitches in her leg due to broken glass. However despite that, I would go again. The instructors are awesome and it is a unique way to spend the day. read more

The Pumpkinmania session led by Alex and Emily was made more special by their warmth, generous spirits, focus on us novice learners and ability to make us feel competent and capable even as we might have been intimidated ( I was!!!) by the heat and fire in the studio. After going on a tour last year with a friend, I decided to take my science-loving 11 year old to one of Brooklyn Glass's free tours. The stuery friendly, relaxed environment and extremely entertaining. The one hour tour navigated us through bead making, the neon shop and glassblowing and the tour guide was knowledgable and clear . The whole staff was super friendly and engaging and the demos were great. It was amazing to see very talented artists in action. The space is also amazing. Large neon shop and the glassblowing area is beautiful with areas for artists to keep their work. read more

What an exciting energy there is participating in a neon class at Brooklyn Glass. The teacher is the best. So knowledgable and experienced in his field and making the course as fun as it gets with real hands on activities! We have been learning from this teacher for over 10 years and each time we attend another session we learn something new to help hone our skills and push the creativity. We recommend taking this course if you are at all interested in lighting and learning about a serious science and fine art that has been around for decades. I took the two day intensive NEON introduction class. We were blessed to have Dave Ablon, one of the BG Precision Neon founders and neon artisan, as our primary instructor - he shared industry history and insights to the different neon crafting techniques of different regions of the world. The BG facility is very well fitted out for instruction, with students in session along side inspiring production work. Dave is one of the rare experts in his craft who is also an effective teacher. The assistants helping him / us were on top of their game as well. The structure of the course - the first day quickly getting students into creation of a free form 'modern art' working neon piece is a smart move on the part of BG - encouraging students to NOT stay within the lines; to not try to achieve expertise in one go. The second day did dive into technical skills development - very challenging, with humorous results in many cases. My initial attempts at cutting, fusing, bending etc looked much like that ugly clay mug I created in 1st grade art - something only a mother could love. I wish I lived in the NYC area - to be able to use access to the BG studio as a course graduate 'renter'' of the facility and all it offers in terms of space, equipment, supplies and the like. My fiancé and I took the Neon Weekend class and totally loved the experience. It was disheartening to see a somewhat negative review from a fellow classmate (Eden F.)- one which seems to reflect a "glass half empty" point of view. She made a couple of valid points (everyone should bring their own lunch, perhaps more stools would be nice), however none of which overshadow the positive take-aways and do not merit a 3 star rating. Going into the class, $400 felt like a real investment for me but walking away I felt every penny was worth it. David, the instructor, is a great teacher and person- one of the last remaining experts in his craft in the East Coast and to learn from him was an honor. I would encourage anyone to take the course if they were on the fence. I left feeling inspired by David and interested to learn more. I understand that Eden is very young and inexperienced, but I wanted to step in and speak up more fairly for the same class, because I have to wonder if she would have nicer things to say if SHE hadn't broken her own light at the end (really unfortunate, but nonetheless her own accident). The instructor was also kind enough to offer her another light to go home with which he had made..she responded quite rudely to his gesture. Regardless, the class is fantastic...you can ask any questions that you may have as you go and it is truly what you make of it. Everyone will leave the first day with an abstract piece (squiggle) which they make and will be able to light. The second day is dedicated to producing a more designed piece- the instructor will mention this but it is really best to pick something very simple. Your second day of glass bending will only lend itself to a certain level of complexity- a script letter, or linear shape etc are good ways to approach. Hope this helps! Have fun! read more
