It was such a beautiful evening I just have to start from the beginning. I walked up with my friend (who had a piece in the show) and was immediately WOWed when we saw the beautifully lit large windows showcasing tons of happy, supportive, exciting people looking and talking about fiber art. Yes, I've been to galleries before but something felt really good in that space, positive vibes from the get-go. We were greeted by a lovely lady asking for donations. For $5 you got a raffle ticket and free tote bag or scarf. The raffle prizes were all at least $100, well worth a $5-$20 donation, let alone the rest of the evening which I am about unravel to you. Works ranged from gigantic detailed creatures hanging from the ceiling and spilling to the floor, gorgeous intricate embroidered illustrations, very cool sculptural/costume-like joined head piece, large scale portrait quilts, intriguing fabric films.. everything I saw was a FEAST for the eyes, and completely different, yet connected. Cutting edge indeed. I was super impressed and got to meet many of the artists there that night, including Joetta. Although it was crowed (which is SO great for a gallery opening!) the atmosphere was completely positive. The live brass band added a bouncy background to conversation, and later an impromptu dance party/congo. There was lots of delicious savory finger food and darling 'textile arts center' cupcakes. Plenty of complimentary wine and cold craft beers. Bathrooms were spotless, well lit, brightly colored and stocked with essentials. One of the more inspiring NY events I've been to. The current exhibition is up Sept 17 - Oct 11, even without the party it's absolutely worth checking out. The facilities are gorgeous, and class listings are on their website.

Our class was a random assortment of ladies of different personalities (how PC is that ;), but Natalie was very attentive and always sweet. She shared all her tips and techniques and helped guide us to create some unique creations. Of course, none of our work really looked as good as Natalie's, but maybe in time. :-/ The intensives also come with a week of free studio time, but it's really quite a schlep, so I didn't get to take advantage of it. Nice little bonus though!

I can't recommend the skill and professionalism of this shop enough. I had an old, 18th c. Tibetan…read morethangka for decades that had been poorly framed and wanted to do it right. They helped me select the perfect mat to blend with the old cloth and faded colors, and then custom mixed a color and hand painted the mat bevel to highlight the piece even more. They made sure the glass was UV-filter since it would be in a bright room. I smiled when a friend saw it hanging in my living room and said, "What a beautiful piece! Is it new?" Such a difference... Now I understand why they also frame for museums and serious collectors. All in all, a wonderful experience with knowledgeable and friendly people that I hope to have again when I need framing.

I was drawn to the flameworking class because of the thoughtful expression of how the instructor, Saint, described the process of working with borosilicate glass in their class. Truthfully, I was so blown away by it all. Urban Glass has a beautiful community based inclusivity spirit and artist centered focus. The studio was well organized and vast. The staff and technical support team are friendly and helpful. Saint's class had a wonderful pacing to it for a 6 hour workshop. We got to know all of the participants and connect together in a fun way, had a few informative demos on equipment safety and glass techniques, and then got to creating! Han, another glass artist at Urban Glass assisted the class, and it was really great to be able to explore making marbles, small figurines on our own and also have Saint and Han jump in when we needed a bit of extra hands on help. I felt confident from the demos and my practice time to be able to rent space on my own after. Our class has stayed in touch since, and I know several of us from the class have been back to the studio since to create. I'm excited to return to explore and learn more!

The teachers were all incredibly patient and helpful and let us do our thing, but guided us the appropriate amount. We now have amazing custom knives built by our own two hands! This is a nice date night experience…read more Sorry for my late review work has been really busy but I didn't forget to write an honest review based on our experience. I booked a late Father's Day gift for my husband took him to the up-cycle Game Boy class. We love playing games together so I booked it for each of us to get a game boy in the end. You are given the opportunity of picking which gameboy you are going to repair, and you do all the work. You take it apart clean it dry it put it in a I believe was a laser cutter, You customize it and set you up your speaker, screen and motherboard. You get the full experience. He really loved it and so did I, I am not experienced at all in welding or anything like that and the instructors were so helpful and knowledgeable. The way the walk you through it was really helpful to the point I was able to memorize the steps and retake apart the game boy to replace a piece that was oxidized. Don't worry the staff will help you if you're second guessing your ability to do this lol. The best part in the end is you keep it. ^_^ I highly recommend this 1 day class it was very helpful informative and fun. I will be coming back to try to make the survival knife next lol.

They set up a cool bar in the back with cheap beers and mixed drinks. Free snacks all around, including everyone's most-talked about/questioned saltwater taffy. Bathroom situation was odd. Guys were encouraged to pee into an industrial wash sink with a wooden ramp leading up to it. Didn't smell great. But I did appreciate the "whizz palace" P&R reference. Plus free photobooth!

ENVIRONMENT Interestingly enough, there was ample seating all over the coffee shop. There were ceramic pieces on display all over and after inquiring with the barista she confirmed there's a ceramic studio located in the back(separate ownership). However, for anyone in seek of a unique date idea the combo of coffee and ceramics fills a niche. The service was okay and there were select tables designated as "laptop free". SIPS I tried a chai latte which was decent but far from my favorite. HOWEVER,the drip coffee stole the show and I found myself appreciating it far more than expected. It was quite flavorful. While coffee shops that center around unique themes can at times feel gimmicky, the cafe at Artshack does so in a tasteful way that offers unique value. I will certainly be retuning for the drip coffee and maybe taking a ceramics class at some point.Happy sips!

I've gone to…read moreother studios, and this was the first one that allowed us to make as many mistakes as needed and just grab more clay to start over. It definitely took the pressure off being perfect the first time and made it so we could both go home with a piece we were satisfied with. They also have multiple colors that you can glaze with which is a nice touch. The instructor was also really helpful & patient. Can't wait to go back!

Went for the Sat night class for beginners and was looking forward to learning how to use a pottery wheel. It was definitely challenging, but I think I made a few things that I could've ended up saving? There wasn't quite enough hands-on help for me to know though. Turns out the we ended class 20 minutes early and I totally had enough time, but was feeling rushed since the teacher was calling out to finish and clean up. I had nothing to take home and will probably not spend another $85 to do a class again. Definitely go if you're interested in learning, but spend the time wisely and don't leave early if you want a nice handmade bowl to bring home!
