This is a nice date night experience. Sorry for my late review work has been really busy but I didn't forget to write an honest review based on our experience. I booked a late Father's Day gift for my husband took him to the up-cycle Game Boy class. We love playing games together so I booked it for each of us to get a game boy in the end. You are given the opportunity of picking which gameboy you are going to repair, and you do all the work. You take it apart clean it dry it put it in a I believe was a laser cutter, You customize it and set you up your speaker, screen and motherboard. You get the full experience. He really loved it and so did I, I am not experienced at all in welding or anything like that and the instructors were so helpful and knowledgeable. The way the walk you through it was really helpful to the point I was able to memorize the steps and retake apart the game boy to replace a piece that was oxidized. Don't worry the staff will help you if you're second guessing your ability to do this lol. The best part in the end is you keep it. ^_^ I highly recommend this 1 day class it was very helpful informative and fun. I will be coming back to try to make the survival knife next lol. read more

My friend and I did the Buddy Up package for the chef's knife class. I thought it was fun and helpful to work together on one knife, but either way, we all had the support of the instructors guiding us through every step of the process. We were so happy with how the final knife turned out! Some of the other unique workshops include making leather bags, copper lamps, stained glass art pieces, or even longboards. No matter what you choose, it's so special to walk away with some great memories, new skills, and an awesome custom object. read more

This place is a true NYC gem! Sometimes you just need to make things and this is a perfect outlet. Very laid back, friendly vibe. I was lucky enough to get a four-hour private stained glass lesson with Kelsie McNair, and while I have a lot to practice and plenty more to learn, I feel equipped enough to practice on my own. Soup to nuts, we went from design idea, to material selection and through all key steps of the process to make a window hanger. As a novice, I'm surprised I walked away with anything respectable but I did! All the while, Kelsie, the instructor and Chris the manager were good natured and supportive. They are people you'd happily hang out with and made it very easy to learn from. Today far exceeded expectations and increased my interest in the craft. Such a fun class to do- by yourself or with a partner. We came on a Friday evening and had so much fun making a lamp. We had 5 to choose from and they gave us tutorials on how to cut, solder, and glue the pipes together. We loved Shannon! She was so sweet and attentive and just an easy person to talk to. I found out about Craftsman Ave just a few days before our wedding anniversary and it felt like a fun change from the usual "fancy dinner" anniversary celebration. When we signed up to make copper lamps, we chose it expressly because of the date of the class being near our anniversary, and were pleasantly surprised that the date night package included wine from a local Gowanus wine store and pizza from Table 87. I had never heard of Tabel 87 either (I guess I live under a rock, or in Manhattan) but I will now be a fan for the rest of my days. I have NEVER made anything like a lamp or even cut copper pipes, but the guide was so laid back and gave great direction. I felt like I was really doing it myself but I also didn't feel nervous or self conscious about my lack of experiencing soldering or using a pipe cutter. I feel pretty awesome about myself after the whole experience, and my husband who was initially a reluctant participant was inspired to try out other workshops in the future. We weren't exactly sure what to expect, but our instructor Gerard was an absolute pro and made the experience incredibly fun, interesting and memorable. My wife and I went last to the stained glass date night. What a great experience. Kelsey did an excellent job of explaining all of the procedures necessary in creating a finished stained glass project. The setup allowed all of us students to work on our projects without interfering with each other. The atmosphere grabbed me as soon as I got there. The outside door handles were made from welding torch nozzles, when you stepped inside it felt like an artists workshop. The areas for fabrication were well laid out and designed for a safe class. The staff was knowledgeable and helpful. During the break we had pizza and wine as part of the evening. It was a night of learning, great conversation and we came home with a finished project. We are planning on going back for some of the other workshops. read more

Craftsman Ave is great! I took the Intro to Metal Fabrication class and although it can sound intimidating at first, it was easy to follow along and the instructor was super helpful. We had a choice between making a tray or stool, and I picked the stool. We finished the class a bit later but we all got to go home with a beautiful finished product. I took a 4-hour Saturday morning Introduction to MIG welding class and I loved it! The class size was small, and so we had tons hands-on practice and loads of interaction with our awesome instructor Jerome, who was knowledgeable, patient, and super friendly. Jerome began the class by giving us an overview of the steps that we would take to fabricate a metal planter. Next, he explained each step and the proper use of each tool as we completed each stage toward our final result. He ensured that students were adhering to safe and proper use of tools throughout, as he offered encouragement and tips to ensure a better result. All told, I couldn't ask for a better experience, and is exactly the entry-point that I needed to start practicing these skills on my own. Although Craftsman Ave is a good distance from my NJ home, I'm strongly considering taking another class. If they offer the Customize Your Own Motorcycle class again, I will crawl through broken glass to attend. If they open a Montclair, NJ branch of this place, I'm renting the apartment above. If you haven't grinded down welds while listening to rock cranking in the background, you haven't lived! read more

For partner and my 5 year anniversary we took the date night class to make a side table. This was an incredible experience. Jeff and his assistant Arlene were very friendly, fun, and knowledgeable about woodworking. Prior to the class , Jeff made us homemade hot dogs and hamburgers and we were also serenaded by rock jams from the 90's! Overall we were able to use three different types of saws, as well as sanders and other tools. Afterwards we all enjoyed a beer together. I just took my second class and again, had a fantastic time! I first took the Lettering class which was really inspiring and informative and just took the soap-making class where we made a whole pound of soap to take home. I love Craftsman Ave because the class sizes are VERY small and it makes for a very hands-on, informal experience with a lot of individual attention. The staff is incredible friendly and helpful; I've interacted with Jayson and he is the best! Craftsman Avenue is a craft/maker space opposite Lowe's on 11th between 2nd and 3rd Ave. They have classes on woodworking, jewelry making, motorcycle design, lettering etc. and offer studio space. It's a great space, clean, open. I had a lot of fun making earrings in the jewelry class and I am definitely going back for more. read more

Wood / saw dust can be major health issue. Some woods are extremely toxic to breath in and some folks are allergic without ever knowing it until they experience it. At Craftman's there are no ceiling, floor or individual hook up ventilation systems to filter and bag the wood dust from the table saw, band saw or sander. A cloud of dust enveloped the table saw as we cut about two dozen pieces of wood. This lead me to notice the amount of wood dust coating the walls and surrounding all the wood working equipment. The class was ok, but the amount of wood dust makes it unsafe for me to take another class with them. If you take a wood class there, I would advise bringing one of those throw away nurses mask and a set of ear plugs. They provide safety glasses. read more

We organized a small group (8 people) private intro to modern woodworking course and had a great time with Jeff! This was for a 30th birthday with a bunch of people who had no experience, and it was a huge success. We left with great tables and Jeff made the whole thing feel super celebratory and fun. One of the group member's table didn't exactly hold together by the end of the night so Jeff fixed it and sent it to him in the mail! 10/10 recommend!! read more

I got this class as a gift for my boyfriend partially based on the rave reviews for the highly experienced scheduled instructor. However, the instructor was switched out at the last minute for a college student who had never taught a class and time went way over, so we missed other plans that evening.
