I rate MAKE A FRAME "I.O.P." for INSANELY OVERPRICED! I had 5 copies of an 8x10 I wanted to have framed to give as gifts, so I went here bc it was closet to where I live. I chose a very simple framing and the price I was given was $174.00 for each (with no discount to have all 5 done)!!!! That is absolutely INSANE! Even if they had that former carpenter Jesus in the back doing the framing that's still disgraceful pricing. I politely declined. I went back on Yelp and found Brooklyn Art over on 5th avenue in Bay Ridge who did it all for $20 each! That's right I got all 5 done for only $100! And take a look at the pic - great work too! For the same 5 at Make a Frame it would've cost me $870 w/o tax - why would I pay $154.00 more for each when I doubt there would be that much of a qualitative difference to the eye between their work and Brooklyn Arts? And even if they are using better grade materials & say they are the best craftsman in the world - can they really justify a $154.00 difference per frame job? I wasn't getting high art framed here - just a cool little personal photograph printed off at CVS no less, lol! What can I say? Might have been the day / the person that helped me -- but I had called ahead to get a quote from a few places (all the quotes came back around the same amount) so I decided to visit Make A Frame first given all the pretty positive reviews... 1) There were two people working there and 1 other customer being helped. We somehow were there for over 40 minutes where two different people (that while they were pretty nice) measured and re-measured our painting, asked us the same questions and rambled on an on, until... 2) Final pricing came out to be over 70% more than what was quoted on the phone, which was incredible frustrating 3) They told us they were incredibly busy and it would take at least a month for the framing to be done. We ended up going to one of the other shops we had called and they got it done in under 3 days and at a price that was slightly below what they had quoted me. read more

This review is for quality of service, not quality of work. Our experience could have been a one off but we were very dissatisfied. I'm more than accommodating and understanding of Covid and supply shortages as these things are completely outside of everyone's control but I'm not understanding of bad service. Our initial consultation was disorganized. Granted this is a very large piece. We were misquoted several times on price, which was super frustrating. We were also misquoted on materials. It felt like the person working with us was not super experienced, at least with extra large pieces. I could have over looked this, but probably would have gone elsewhere if we weren't already there and the didn't feel like repeating this process. We told them of our timeline (which has a hard stop due to the holidays) and they said it was no problem. We had two weeks of wiggle room. We left hopeful. As we got closer to the expected date of completion I stopped by and checked in. They said it'd be ready exactly as planned. Great! We were excited. The date came and went, we didn't receive any updates. I called and was told they needed a couple more days, again, not a problem. I checked back in and they said it was the weekend, they were too busy, and it'd be ready on Monday. I said no problem. I called Monday and they said it'd be ready tomorrow. I said ok (patience decreasing). They never called proactively to say it was going to take longer, I reminded them of our deadline and they promised to have it done, just needed a little more time. Still didn't get a call or update. Finally I called the day before we left for travel and they said there was a giant scratch on the material, it wouldn't be ready and they had to reorder. HOW was this not addressed earlier? They offered to ship it to us out of state to Florida for half the cost, they wanted to make it right, I said no thank you, not necessary. We'd be back in two months. Sad. We show up to pick it up finally, we love it, I bring up their offer to "make it right", and the gentlemen we worked with got very dismissive and noticeably defensive. The problem with his attitude was that I didn't ask for this, his staff offered this concession to us for our trouble. He offered $35 off (half the cost of shipping, which I highly doubt) in a very sarcastic and dismissive way. Seriously??? We were super uncomfortable. In the end he offered slightly more. We paid the remaining balance and will not return or recommend this place to anyone else. read more

We tried a few different frame shops but once we found Make A Frame we've never been anywhere else. Super friendly and knowledgeable staff, before suggesting something that may cost more they always explain that and what the long-term differences might be. Great suggestions but also not at all pushy, always work with you if you have a different thought. If it's a standard size piece and you're not looking to do something custom they also have a great selection of pre-fabrication frames too. For me the cost has always matched the quality and wait time has always met my expectations. Generally they turn things around a little quicker than their estimates if possible. Never bought a piece from them but awesome selection of Stephen Powers and other artists works. read more

I have had many paintings framed at Make a Frame and the staff is always very patient and knowledgable in helping to come to the best decision about the many parts involved in the process. The quality of the materials is excellent and the staff are true craftspeople who build the frames themselves. For Thoren, the owner, each piece is a labour of love that he stands behind. A few of my paintings have been unusual, irregular shapes, and I very much appreciate the expertise of the staff in figuring out how to make each one work. I wasn't thrilled with the colour of the mat on one painting, when we could see it finished with the frame, and they changed it at no extra cost. The prices reflect the quality: if you have a special work of art, you want it beautifully presented. In my opinion, the frame is just as important as what it surrounds. It should be remarkable it its own right in addition to enhancing the art. read more

I experienced unaccommodating and unfriendly service from the owner who was dismissive of my request to frame a picture a certain way. I needed advice about backing and mounting so a picture would fit with others I have (done at a very old school, traditional framers in another town) and he stopped just short of sneering (see his response to see what I mean). I give Make a Frame a low rating just because I think that the prices here are jacked up compared to other framing shops in NYC. I was doing price checks in various areas of town for UV Conservation glass (24x36"). The majority of the prices fell around $50-60 and MakeAFrame quoted their price for $90. I would have expected Museum Archival glass to be that price not standard UV Proof Glass... I stopped by the shop and I was impressed with the setup. Young, courteous staff members with modern & hip artist prints adorning their walls. I was discouraged knowing that their prices lean on the tad over- expensive end. Again, I do not know first-hand on the quality of their work but judging from the other reviews it appears to be great. Just keep in mind there are cheaper alternatives for possibly the same quality of work. read more

These guys are spot on. Totally professional, completely helpful, and seemed to take the extra time to get it right. Admittedly, I don't know the first thing about custom framing. I originally went into the shop because I live a block away, and simply thought I'd show them what I want framed (a silly little napkin which had scribbles from the first "date" I went on with my gal), and I'd walk away with the finished product 20 minutes later. Haha, very naive. I forget the name of the guy I worked with (because I'm bad with names, not because he wasn't impressionable), but he thoroughly, and patiently walked me through each step, guiding me with colors, sizing, bordering, styles, etc. I'd consider myself a person with somewhat of an artistic eye, and he definitely understood what makes something look good--he even casually guided me away from certain things I was considering with great reasons to back it up (width of spacers, color contrasts as it pertains to the sheerness of the material I was framing/mats/frames, acidic vs acid-free mats as it relates to what I am framing, etc). Whenever there is such a lob-sided balance of information between two people, the one with less can feel vulnerable. At no point did I get the impression I was being taken advantage of--it was just solid, authentic service. It was cool how he made the experience educational. One of the things I liked most about my visit was that while the fella that helped me seemed extremely knowledgeable on the technical and visual side of the equation, he also used the back-story to what I was framing (a crumply, first-date, year old napkin) to help me design something that was consistent with and helped express the overall sentiment of what was inside the frame. So maybe I'm impressed with the shop because it was my introduction to custom framing, and I have nothing else to compare it to, but something tells me this place would be a gem even for someone well-acquainted with this world. As far as pricing, again, I'm totally in the dark... have never shopped around or anything, but I'd venture to say that the service justifies the final price. Good work guys! read more

Amazing! Basically what everyone said is true. You go in thinking, hey they're awesome. And you leave thinking, "man that was even better than I expected." A frame fell off the wall, shattered the glass. I went in and they were busy! The three people who worked on the floor were all helping customers. But I was helped as soon as one of them was free. I told him what happened and had brought the frame and a piece of glass to show. The guy scratched the glass to see what kind it was, although he already guessed from looking at it that it was normal. He then checked the frame's edges to make sure that even though it fell, it was still in tact in all the corners (thanks, never would have thought of that!). He then checked to make sure the frame was still in its proper shape (kind of). He measured it, and brought the glass back. Although during the wait, I was able to observe the other two helping customers with choosing frames and they are very detailed, patient, and helpful. He came back and said he had cut a second piece because the first had cracked, and it was the crack that would spider out. He warned me about being careful when handling raw-cut glass, and when putting it in, how best to clean it and with what. He fit it in the frame to make sure it was the right size, and then asked me how it was hung. I told him, and both he and I thought it was unacceptable, so he provided me with complimentary mounts. And then decided to do more, and knew right away what kind of clasps the frame's backing used, and went and got me two, with a wire to custom size it for the frame. Came home and it's good as new read more

Rating: 2.5 stars My husband and I bought a massive canvas charcoal drawing about three years ago and we FINALLY took it to the store to get it framed. After reading the reviews, I was hoping that the folks at Make a Frame would tell me what works best and quote a reasonable price. The canvas is massive and a little tricky -- it's crooked on the top and on the bottom, but straight on the sides. So I told them to cut the canvas, so that the sides of the canvas could be exposed and not hidden behind a matte. I called them after the time estimate had passed and was told it wasn't ready. When we picked it up, we thought it looked great and couldn't wait to get it home. Until I realized it was crooked...and proceeded to stare at it for 10 minutes straight, trying to convince myself that I could live with it. Now the price tag wasn't cheap, but it was not an easy project. I ended up calling them back and they suggested adding a matte to cover the crooked canvas edges. I only had to spring for the $80 matte (no labor costs). They also mentioned that they would never cut the canvas - it is part of their policy to maintain the integrity of the original artwork (something that might have been helpful to know on day #1). At the end of the day, the framed picture looks amazing in my apartment and I am thankful for that. But I think a little more proactive communication and upfront expertise/advice would have been very helpful. read more

Make a Frame is not the cheapest option around, but the quality of their frames is well worth what they charge. I've had five items framed at Make a Frame over the last few years and they've done a fantastic job with each one. Their associates all have great taste and are helpful to consult with when determining the type of frame you want for your piece. I recently ordered a frame from them that didn't come out to my exact liking (which wasn't even their fault) and when I emailed Make a Frame about it, I received an immediate response from Thoren, the owner, graciously offering to fix the frame free of charge and he even drove over to my apartment to pick the frame up and drop it off when it was fixed. I cannot say enough about this place. The staff is always very good, suggests economical options, and will also steer you towards what will be best for your work. When I brought in an inexpensive photo to get framed, they sold me a good quality metal frame that I could put the photo in myself, and assured me I could do it. The shop is just fun to be in and look around. They have interesting images framed on the walls and in the store windows. Best of all they know their stuff. I wouldn't go anywhere else. I brought them in a nylon roll-up chessboard signed by Garry Kasparov that I wanted framed. A staff member worked with me for 30 minutes choosing the right frame and matting for the piece. He provided great professional guidance with respect to both aesthetic and technical issues and worked within in my taste preferences and price range. I just picked up the framed board today. It looks great. Another employee explained that they had made some executive decisions about the backing that would ensure that the board would remain well-preserved -- something less experienced or caring framers likely would not considered. I just picked up probably the third piece of artwork that I've had mounted, matted and framed at Make A Frame, and as always I couldn't be happier with the end result. The place has a really cool, creaky bohemian vibe, and it's always really interesting to see examples of their work all over the walls. Plus the folks working there are top-notch and always very friendly. This time around I took in an unfolded first-run print of the new New York City Subway Night Map, intending to have it preserved under glass in case it ever ends up being worth anything. (Not likely, but a guy can dream, right?) I got it back a few weeks later and it couldn't look more awesome. It doesn't get better. The best customer service, the best work. Thoren is a pro, and his entire staff is helpful, constructive and inviting. The framing experience can easily feel overwhelming for customers, which they recognize and address by working hard to make the experience feel positive and collaborative. We've worked with Make a Frame for the last 2 years when ever we've needed frames for some art we've received from friends. Each time we've loved going to the shop, chatting with Thoren and his crew. He and his crew has been super helpful in picking out matte and frame combinations that best brought out the work. We also love that he's honest about when not to splurge and when a higher end frame really makes the piece. One of prints they framed slipped from it's float and we took it back to the shop. Our experience remained friendly and engaging all the way through to the end, when we were deciding upon a pricing package with Jess. HIGHLIGHTS: - Megan was extremely careful with our artwork and asked permission before handling the pieces - Megan expertly assisted us in selecting the wood for the frames by comparing and contrasting different woods and stains with the colors in the individual art prints - Megan seemed to genuinely enjoy working with customers, artwork, and her coworkers, and never once did she attempt a "hard-sell" --- instead, Megan tailored the experience to our wants and needs - Megan balanced "shop talk" (glass types and treatments, wood stains, measurements, etc.) with fun chit-chat --- like admitting she used to drink boxed wine when she was in college (It's totally okay! I did, too!) - Jess jumped in to help Megan during the pricing package decision making process and did everything she could to get us the best value for our money - Jess explained everything about the various options in a way that made it easy to understand. Absolutely fantastic service. We took two prints and three photos in 30 minutes before closing and we were treated very well. The gentleman who helped us went over the prints/photos one by one and gave us our options for matting and framing. No upselling or pressure, just clean competence. I love working with people who know their stuff. The matting and framing took a couple of weeks, and the results were excellent. They bumped up a couple of the frames to the next larger size for free because they had run out of the smaller size (after confirming over the phone). The mattes were perfectly cut and the framing clean. I've cut my own mattes and framed before, and I was really impressed with their work. Good stuff! This place does really expert work. The staff is knowledgeable and extremely helpful. I have had four pieces framed there now and have never been sure of what I wanted when i walked in. They took time showing me tons of options for framing, glass, mat, and mounting techniques. Really excellent customer care. It can get expensive, of course. I have been going to Make A Frame since I was a kid. Back then you could make your own frame and for a kid, this was super cool. Now as an adult I continue to get my items framed there. If you're the type of person that has a lot of time to waste or has tons of patience then this is the place for you. We just wanted a simple frame for a poster, we stood there for almost 25 mins with no one letting us know what was going on. I even witnessed a paying customer nearby waiting to pick up his frame and no one even approached him he had to reached out to an employee to assist him. I have gone, off and on, to Make a Frame for twenty years. I have never been disappointed. In the last five years or so, having inherited quite a few paintings and watercolors of the highest quality, I have taken things in to be re-framed, adjusted in the frame or newly framed and have been hugely pleased by what I see as newly honed professionalism and top notch execution in framing at Make a Frame. They carry many more upper-end frames than they used to. The name of the place is somewhat misleading - I don't know how many people go there to actually frame something themselves, which at one time people used to do there, if memory serves. I am delighted because I no longer need go to Manhattan. It was bound to happen with so many young artists, designers and creative individuals populating Brooklyn; Thoren and his crew have really filled a need. In addition to knowing a huge amount about the subtleties of framing, they are enormously clever and think inventively while being welcoming and efficient. So nice to have them here.
