I broke a small frame while visiting a friend's place nearby (couldn't find the light switch!), and I popped in here to get it fixed. Ten minutes before closing for the weekend, they fixed the frame in under ten minutes and charged me less than four dollars. Arrogance and rudeness are only a few of the words that come to mind. I've always hated the way I've been spoken to with dismissiveness and derision in this place. But they were the neighborhood spot, so that's where I went. I've had many pieces framed here over the last half decade because I used to live nearby - it was a little out of the way, but the quality was right (mind you the price was a touch on the high end). While I'll admit that they do good work, I came down the other day all the way from Queens (I moved about a year ago) to give them my business just as I had for years. It was raining, and they had a sign on their door that said they would be closed until a few days after the new year. That's fine indeed - but three staff people were inside working clearly visible from the sidewalk. The rain was intense, it was a cold, dirty, New York winter rain and there I was, frame in tow, from an hour away just to get some work done as a loyal, returning customer. I caught the attention of one of the employees (owners? I know not which, but I'd worked with him and recognized him from the many pieces I'd done there before) and he comes to the door - but refused to open it. "WHAT?!" He yells through the door (mind you, the metal security gate was pulled half way down, the sign was on the door - so I knew they were technically closed but Hell, it was raining, I'd come all the way from Queens, and they were all clearly inside...) refusing to even open the door to yell through the gate. "I came all the way from Queens because I need some help with this frame." He looked at me, as if I was some sort of devilish pariah. In his mind, the big F. U. was surely present. He did everything short of show me his middle-most finger with fist in crux of elbow. But instead, that familiar, condescending stare with which I have put up with for years for lack of a better neighborhood option. "Its raining man, can I just drop the piece off for now and then I"ll come back and we can sort it out after the New Year?" Blank stares, angry looks. Still, not even bothering to crack the door so we don't have to shout. "COME BACK AFTER THE THIRD" Why would you even come to the door if you weren't going to open it? To add insult to injury? I saw the sign on the door, but I also saw three human beings with what I presumed might have been empathy who could have just as easily said, "yes just step inside for a moment, drop that here and come back after the third and we will sort out the details then," which would have taken just as much if not less time as it had for the shouting through the door process. And it was then that I realized that I always hated the customer service and snotty attitude I ALWAYS received at this place - and now that I didn't live in that hood, why should I ever come back? COME BACK AFTER THE 3RD? AFTER THIS? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? So there I stood. Sopping wet in the pouring rain - his mean mug looking back with a self satisfied scowl which matched most of my experiences there which I had endured for convenience sake over the years. But not any more. Not ever again. I'll never come back to this frame shop and if you want people who won't treat you like dirt when you try to frame up your cherished work, don't go here. There are plenty of other options in Park Slope that are just as good, friendlier, and less expensive. read more

At a time when everyone is pushing away business: I mean I went to five framing stores - five - who said they couldn't do anything before August or September before they even knew what my issue was! these guys welcomed me and took a look and did a simple thing on the back of my artwork so that it would hang better and they charged me less than six dollars - I repeat, six dollars. when I tell you I will be giving this wonderful wonderful store all of my framing business (and I have a lot to come that's gonna cost a hell of a lot more than six dollars each), they have earned it with their honesty and willingness to do a small job where no one else in the neighborhood would. They've done beautiful framing work for me, since I moved to Park Slope in the late 90's. I'm a professional photographer and at the time I started to use them, I was exhibiting darkroom printed fine art photographs in NYC galleries. I'm now a commercial photographer (wedding, food and family), and I love framing my food and family images. They have framed tintypes for me, wetplates, fine art silver prints and family photographs for me. Very meticulous and knowledgeable. You can choose the level of framing you'd like - ie. thick matt board and hand carved wood, with the most archival with UV glass, or a less expensive simple option. They also have a few ready-mades, if you are in need of a quick and cheap option. read more

San Art has framed at least 15 of my pictures and all the work has been outstanding. Rainer's recommendations for mats and frames are unerring and they are incredibly patient with indecisiveness. They never try to upsell and always finish work on time. If you are framing pictures you care about, you owe it to yourself to have them framed by San Art. read more

Over the last few years I've had about 10 pieces framed at San Art Framing & Supply and I've been consistently happy with the results! San Art offers a great selection of frames from a variety of price points and are good at offering opinions on what they think will best elevate your pieces. The guys that work there are polite, knowledgeable, and really good at what they do! When you get your pieces back you can absolutely tell that the work is done at a high quality. That high quality does come at a price though, however, so getting something framed here isn't for the faint of heart. I'd rather spend more for these things though since I figure they'll last me a lifetime. I've also never really shopped around in the neighborhood so for all I know these prices are standard - gotta pay those Park Slope rents somehow! They also require a lot of lead time in busier seasons (like leading up to the holidays.) Price and lead time aside, which weren't really complaints but just notes, I've only had one small issue there. Once I stopped in with a rolled up canvas to price getting it stretched and was given a pretty high number by a younger guy that I hadn't seen much before. I left to think on it and decided to just have it done since I love their work. When i returned I was served by one of the other guys who I usually see there and he gave me a lower number. Glad I didn't just go ahead with the first number or I would have paid more! I'm sure there are other decent framers in Park Slope, but this place does beautiful work. When it comes to framing, you get what you pay for, so if you look at it as an investment, it doesn't hurt your wallet so bad! I'll keep coming here as long as I live in Brooklyn. read more

I've been a customer here for about a decade. They've framed about twenty pieces for me, in that time, and this review applies equally to every single one of those. There are fundamental aesthetic and practical reasons why I frame my favorite artwork. I believe that a frame (besides protecting art from UV sun rays and atmospheric decay) establishes the context within which the viewer understands the art. The process of selecting a frame is personal, and I like to take my time to think and understand the pros and cons of each possibility, before making the final selection. San Art is an absolutely impeccable, outstanding framing outfit. This review is written as I am moving far away from here, and paying my respect to a business that has been an cornerstone of quality of my life here in Brooklyn, NY. These people are absolute professionals and they're not messing around. If you're not of a strong opinion about something you're having framed, or fairly wishy-washy (and admit it now if you are), you're probably going to regard the owner and staff and brusque and rude. My take: They are direct. It wastes less of their time, less of your time, and allows them to get on with what they do best - and that's FRAMING. I was very impressed by how they took me through the process of choosing frames for the three items I took in to them, and how they took even the smallest pieces of information I gave them about the works involved and helped me make choices based on that (example: one work is a photo a friend took and gave to me as a gift - he signed it on the back. The framer suggested having a section in the back where I'll be able to see through the backing where my friend signed it). The prices are not the cheapest (this ain't Fast Frame, folks), but they use quality materials, and just about every frame is custom made. It really doesn't get much better. As far as I'm concerned, this place was worth every single penny. read more

I love mom and pops and always try to support local businesses when I can. I needed some framing done about 10 years ago and stopped in here to check out their selection and they were so rude and arrogant I left. Fast forward to last week. I had a big piece that I didn't want to lug I to manhattan so I tried them out again. They were actually really nice, and job they quoted me was affordable. I was told that they'd need a week to finish it up, but they called me two days later and told me it was done! So far a great experience. Well....... I went in the next day to pick it up and they couldn't find my painting. After about 15 minutes I asked them to just give me a buzz when they found it thinking I'd go back later in the day. Three days went by and no call, so I called them concerned that it was lost. They said that the dimensions they listed on the paperwork didn't match the size of the painting so they were looking for something smaller, but that they did have it. I went back the next day and they couldn't find it again. I explained the issue with the dimensions on the paperwork, and left to run a couple errands. The good news is they finally found it and it wasn't permanently lost. The bad news is after all the run around to pick it up, the mat is crooked. Never again. read more

This is small neighborhood family business as it should be. The kind rarely seen anymore. The opposite of buying or framing art online. When you walk in the door you instantly know that things will slow down and care will be taken to you and your project. There is integrity and craftsmanship at its best at San Art. Entrusting irreplaceable pieces of art work (whether expensive, a family heirloom, or a water color painting by a 6 year old child) can be very anxiety provoking. Owner Rainer and his employees are always aware of this and take care to make their handmade frames compliment the work inside. We have been using San Art for over 15 years and have always been more then satisfied with the work done. Over this time we have relied on Rainer's creative eye and decades of experience to guide us to an end project that always exceeds our expectations. We have come in with multiple difficult framing projects (like a lithograph owl that needed to float) and Rainer has helped us create the most beautiful, thoughtful work. One thing we know for sure is that Rainer is a true true master of his trade and an artisan. He is always perfecting his craft by learning and developing new framing skills. Don't be distressed by the overwhelming sense of chlaustrophobia you'll feel upon entering this decades-old, family owned framing shop because this place is the best. Warm, fuzzy and welcoming it is not -- literally every square inch of this place is consumed by equipment, dusty antiques, old prints, and a ridiculous number of frame samples -- but their work speaks for itself. They're honest, they're reasonable, they have superb suggestions, and their attention to detail is absolutely impeccable, right down to how they wrap your art when it's time to pick it up. I recently had a series of eight pieces framed identically. They easily could've upsold me on custom frames at $150/piece. Instead, they also presented me with the option of using really nice pre-made frames and adding nice additions like good mats, wires and full backing. I opted for the latter, which cut the cost from $1000 to $500. It took almost two months to finish all of them, but eh, it takes forever anywhere. I'll admit I've tried to cheap out on framing over the years -- I'd take art to frame shops based on which sh_tty Groupon I could scrounge up, but you get what you pay for. I'll never take my stuff anywhere else again. read more

I have been having pieces custom framed here for over five years and in this time I have had at least 20 works framed. I have been very happy with each piece. The frame selection is excellent but more importantly the knowledge and taste of the people who work at this shop is incredible. Regardless of the monetary value of what you are having framed they treat each piece with respect, I have literally had everything from a free poster I got at a rest stop in Alabama to an oil painting by a noted artist framed here. Im SO glad to have these guys in the neighborhood. We are very sensitive about aesthetic issues, to the point it take us a long time to hang anything on our walls. In addition to the picture, the frame has to feel right. Ive brought in a range of pieces from a fine modern painting to a range of antiqueJapanese prints and a small modern icon, several of them needing special treatment, and other more prosaic projects to San-Art over the years. Each time they have worked with me patiently to find the most aesthetically appropriate solutions and frames, with great results. This was my first time getting anything framed so I was very lucky to have this shop nearby. They were fantastic. They spent over an hour with myself and my boyfriend picking out the perfect frame for a large print. Since it was so large, the cost was fairly high so they worked with us to find a cheaper solution that still looked great. I cannot say enough good things about this place - great work, nice and knowledgable staff, plethora of styles available, etc. read more

Not impressed. While the photos I took them were beautifully matted and framed, it took them almost 4 months to frame 2 photos at a price of almost $400. I got pre-made frames, so it's not like they had to make them. When I went in with the photos and picked out all of the options I was told it was going to take 12 weeks for them to complete them. I thought that was a really long time, but I waited 13 weeks and then called to see if they were done. They then told me it was going to take an additional month! The next photo I had framed I took to another store and picked out the same options. (Pre-made frame, same matting, same style of glass) 1 framed photo cost under $100 and it was done in 2 days and looked just as good. I won't go back to San Art. read more

The. Worst. They 'misplaced' an heirloom silver frame that I brought in to have the glass replaced. They broke my heart by loosing a much-loved antique piece, and never reimbursed me the cost to buy a similar one. I wouldn't bring them anything I cared about seeing again. read more

San Art did a beautiful job on the pictures we wanted framed, with the exception of one haven't got back. We spent a lot of $$$ here. After months of waiting for a signed photo portrait of my child to be framed (all the bells and whistles, fancy glass, wood, matting) and several walkbys to check on the picture (they were always closed), I finally called the shop to ask what happened to our picture. The man who answered the phone who I am assuming is the owner seemed like he really cared about the lost picture and told me he remembered it and would search the store and call me right back. Well its hours later, and still no call back- I finally call THEM AGAIN and same guy answers, but this time proceeds to have an attitude and tell me he hasnt searched . I just wanted to know if they lost the picture. DO YOU HAVE IT? YES OR NO??? They never called us to tell us it was ready and it was already paid for. I feel screwed and will not take in any more pictures to get framed until they resolve this issue. read more

Great selection of frames, expert work, but most importantly, they will spend generous amounts of time with you to help you select the best frame, matting and glass/acrylic protection (if needed). Just picked up an antique WW I poster from San Art and am totally pleased with the finished product. Their help was invaluable in helping me choose the right matt and frame. By that I mean that I was given lots of options in an organized way and not rushed. Turn-around time is inexact, but the end result and their integrity more than compensate for that. Recently I worked with San Art on a rush framing job and had such a positive experience that I wanted to post a review. I'm a Brooklyn based painter and had a small work that I needed to quickly frame for an exhibition. Not only did the guys at San Art agree to take on the job despite the three day turnaround, they worked with me in all ways to get the job done and for a very reasonable cost. Beyond that they also treated the work, which had recently been varnished and was still drying, with the extreme care that was required. Typically I have framed my work at Sky Frame in Chelsea, but given this experience and the fact that they are in my neighborhood I'll definitely plan to work with them again. I came in just to get my print matted. I already had a frame. The staff was so great helping me pick the right matte color and quality. They were very busy but squeezed in my print and matted it in a couple hours which I really appreciated! They also threw in some hardware to hang my print and wrapped it beautifully to protect it. well, i really only went there to buy mat board. i couldn't find the place at first, so ended up there very close to closing time. i was received with warm courtesy and respect. i was very happy with what i walked out with and i will without a doubt go back for framing needs. the kicker of my visit, however, was that i walked in behind an unhappy woman who had been swearing out loud for about half a block, since she passed me while i was locking up my bike. she continued the same adorable nasty demeanor inside San Art. the guy taking care of her transaction delivered service as though she were perfectly cordial and pleasant, like beyond polite or acceptable. these people deserve some stars! i'll check back later with my impressions of the framing quality! read more
