Another howaboutwe date night with my fiance - this time an activity together rather than just stuffing our face. My fiance and I struggled to locate the studio initially since there was no clear sign of where 1B was. We later realized with another couple that it was inside this apt complex with no doorman. We had to buzz and wait for the elevator attendee to come get us. A good 5 minute wait just by the main entrance. When we finally arrived, we realized the studio itself was inside this really crammed room in the basement. Only enough space to have about 10 canvas set up at a time. We walked in right when other couples were just introducing themselves. We quickly grabbed our aprons and said our names + occupations - then hurried to set up our station - brushes, paint, and check in to get our blank canvas. Instead of having all the couples paint the same chosen piece together, there were a pile of painting samples laid out for each couple to choose from. Each couple was asked to work on 1 canvas together and let their creativity juice flow. Besides the bottles of paint, they also had bottles of white and red wines available for all guests. Our teacher was extremely sweet and down to earth. She constantly went around making sure we learned all the basic techniques, ensured we had all the materials/right tools, and refiled the wine supply. My fiance and I felt really comfortable just being goofy and showing off our almost zero to none artistic talent. Our instructor even came around and offered glitter paint color! She knew I like sparkles from far hehe. The 2 hr class time flew right by and we had an awesome time. Our instructor even offered to help take pictures of us with our final masterpiece. I never learned her name since we arrived late and I felt awkward interrupting to ask - but she's a complete sweetheart. Perfect studio for all levels. There were couples who obviously had more experience with painting/art but we were all allowed to show off our styles/preferences/interpretations of each piece - no pressure or intimidated at all. I haven't been to the physical location yet so this review is only in regards to their online classes. I've taken mostly art journaling, mixed media, and one Procreate workshop. The classes and instructors are phenomenal! Rebecca, the owner, offers a free class most Sundays but do check the schedule. I love how nurturing and supportive the vibe of TASNY is. It is unlike most art schools I've encountered. I believe all schools should celebrate the love of creating art regardless of what skill level the student is at. This nurturing atmosphere is towards the adults too and I absolutely love that! My favorite instructors so far are Emilee Reed & Anna Levy. They are both passionate about teaching, kind, and patient. I do find that I need more time to complete my art offline so I wish the workshops were a little longer but this isn't a big deal. It's important not to feel rushed anyway. I highly recommend taking workshops and classes from them. Their classes are more reasonably priced than some other places. I can easily see that TASNY puts in a lot of effort to grow a sense of community. Visit their website and Facebook (especially for replays of the FB Lives to familiarize yourself with them). I am so happy I found this place! I have not ever drawn anything my whole life (stick figures for UML don't count). I wanted something for a beginner to start me off, not a full-blown art education. I Yelped, of course, and after looking at a dozen studios, I chose this one because they had a "Fear Free" drawing class. How appropriate. Well, the business shares its space with an apartment complex; it sits in the basement. For a claustrophobic person, I was a bit nervous at first as I walked in and saw the office right behind the door. The 2 art rooms are a bit cramped and not at all fancy as I imagined them to be after seeing them in movies, but guess what? This place really grows on you! The owner and instructors are so welcoming, especially to newbies like me who don't even know how to hold a pencil. They not only encourage you, but provide you with instructions catered to your own skill level and comfort zone. So after I stopped breathing for a minute, I raised my hands and asked for help. As you can see, my result after one class (it's charcoal!) There are numerous different classes for every level. You can purchase all your supplies there. What's great for folks that don't know what's needed, they actually bundle all you need and list them on the course site. I basically knew what to expect the first day I was there. Make sure to read the instructions that is emailed to you after you sign up. When you get to the studio, ring the door bell once. Someone will let you in. Just sit and wait. The elevator person will flag you momentarily when the elevator is headed down to the studio. That's it. Enjoy! read more

Classes are very basic and not for children with art background. After discovering this, after my child took 2 sessions in a class, I emailed to let them know we needed to change the course to something more advanced or get a refund. Rebecca emailed that a refund check was being mailed back to me for the remaining amount. It never arrived. A few months later, I emailed to let them know. Michelle emailed me that another check was being sent. A few months later, it never arrived. I emailed and asked if I could apply the amount to a new class and a few months later I still have no response. No one answers the phone. I lost money and time. Don't waste your time and lose your money with this company. read more

Had a great time!!! Probably one of the best date ideas. My boyfriend surprised me with this because I've been wanting to do a paint night for the longest time. We arrived first in our group for the night. We decided to paint one canvas together (one of the employees was going to give us a hard time about doing so but another said it was okay). I believe the large canvas was $10 and the smaller one was $8. It was definitely nice to try to work on one painting together. I think it's the most patient we've been with one another and also a lot of fun. Wine and painting was very fun and relaxing. I have had a consistently disappointing experience with Art Studio NY for the past 5 months- I would think the company was a scam if it weren't for the positive reviews I see here. I have been chasing down my promised refund for months now and reading other reviews, seems like I need to be a publicly squeaky wheel to have them fix their mistake. In June I signed up for a 4 week drawing class for $125 (plus spent $64 purchasing the required art supply list items they sent me for the class). The day before the class was supposed to start, I got an email stating that it would be pushed back one week. One week later, the night before the class was supposed to have been rescheduled to, I sent an email confirming the class start date and received confirmation from Trisha that it would start the next day. Then on the start date, one day later, received an email from Emilee that the class series was completely cancelled and that I was only eligible for a credit for the company. This was all unprofessional enough; I wrote explaining the scenario and Trisha apologized and agreed to refund the $125 tuition for the class that they canceled (with 6-8 weeks for processing). This was in July. 3 months and 2 follow up emails later, I still have not received my refund. I see in other reviews that this has happened before and apparently a poor review needs to be written before this company rights their mistakes- this is dishonest and unprofessional, and writing detailed one-star reviews is not how I want to spend my time. There are lots of other good options for online art classes, I would not recommend this company. read more

Bought a pack of 5 painting classes right before COVID hit. I was only able to take two and absolutely adored my instructor, unfortunately blanking on her name. With that out of the way, I never received a refund for the three classes that occurred after the lockdown. I was told to join an online class session, although I had already left the city without any of my supplies or canvas (which they have you leave @ the studio). Okay, they said that's fine we will put your name on a list of people that will be issued a refund. 9 months later and they aren't responding to emails or calls about a refund. Absolutely ridiculous. We did a private class with Amy and enjoyed it SO MUCH!!! I got this as a birthday present for my spouse. Not only is Amy a talented artist and teacher, but she is personable and so so easy to learn from. And we actually LEARNED a ton, even though we are super beginners. Everything she taught us helped us in the next step. We ended up with art we are proud of and skills to keep going on our own. And since everyone is doing Zoom during the pandemic, she gets extra points for a successful class video video (that can't be easy). Sometimes zoom classes can feel awkward or distant. Felt like she was right there in our living room. I couldn't believe two hours had gone by and I hadn't looked at the clock. For my friend's birthday she wanted to do a paint and sip class and she chose this one. I had my doubts about these classes, in general, being over priced. Off the bat, we realized that you must buy a canvas to use in the class separately, which kind of sucked, whether most other paying and sip classes do this as well or not, I'm not sure. Getting in, I realized the studio was actually a pretty serious art studio that had these classes in addition to normal scheduled art classes. The customer service (if you can call it that?) gave me a pretty good feeling after walking in though. The credit card processing was slow so they let us start class and returned our cards to us once it was processed. There was also an ice breaker at the beginning to hear about everyone's previous experience with painting and art, a very nice touch. Two hours honestly isn't enough time to finish any painting, especially not for me. No one kicked us out of the studio once the two hours were up. The teacher was very helpful and the whole night was pretty balanced in social interaction and creativity. Big shout out to Michelle and Amanada, who contributed to such a fun night. I feel bad having waited this long to review this place. The studio is nice and cozy. But, I took the "dare to oil paint" class in 2018. I have to tell you it was a disappointment. I've taken many art classes after that one and found excellent places where instructors actually do care about your work and give you better feedback. In this class, I have not received good feedback to move the project forward. Our instructor (Amanda) spent most of the time chatting irrelevant stuff with one of the former students (or sometimes with us). Max 2 minutes on our painting and 3-4 minutes on stuff. The instructor was around but was not great at giving helpful direction. So, take this class if you like to have 8-9 paint and sip nights (too expensive for that in my opinion). If you are actually interested in techniques and improving your skills, you are better off in other places. read more

I had gone for a beginners class after getting a Groupon. We were allowed to bring wine to enjoy while painting. We were given a picture that we would all work on together. A few people had asked ahead for a different picture, and were accommodated, happily. The instructor was very nice, a good teacher, and allowed each student to adapt the art to what they wanted to create. He came around a few times to offer help and guidance. I took a semi-private lesson (2hr) for two together with my girlfriend. Through the website I got connected with Richard, who was very helpful with setting up the lesson. The place itself is not too easy to find. The studio is in an appartment inside of a bigger regular appartment building and there aren't many signs, who are guiding you. So better get the phone no. of the instructor beforehand. We were painting a realistic picture based on a photography we took earlier. We learned to wash the canvas, draw the painting in a light color, how to mix colors, which colors to use and to avoid and finally how to start painting it. We also talked about the dis(-advantages) of oil and acrylic and got other useful art tips. We also got served wine during painting. Considering the price (250$) I would have expected everything to be included, but you still have to pay extra (with a hefty margin) for the colors and the canvas (or bring your own). Overall it was a great lesson with a nice instructor. I had fun painting and learned more about how to paint a picture to make it look like I want. read more

I bought a Groupon for a BYOB painting class and due to different things, I had to reschedule more than once, annoying I know. Kristy (sp?) was so flexible and really patient with all of the reschedules and worked me into a class. They don't treat you like a "Groupon" customer, ya know? The class was very laid back, a lot of fun and I found the instructor, Jake, to be knowledgeable and easy going, I would definitely recommend the Art Studio NY. I was at Upper West Side location for private event - BTW elevator is man-operated (no buttons!) , super vintage but it seems pretty safe and functional. My company rented the studio for 2-hour session for 12 people, and we had two instructors in house, Lin and Chris. We were given paintings of our choice to imitate. Chris was encouraging, but not helpful. For example, when I asked her how to mix paints to get a light brown color, she stalled for awhile, because she didn't know... I gave up on her. She offered no meaningful advice, only paid empty compliments like "Oh good job!", "Looks good!" I wouldn't pay almost $100 to be treated like a kindergarten child in art class. Not all hope was lost, Lin was great at teaching techniques and offering solid advice. She understood characteristics of different painting and guided me through very simple directions. I probably won't come back. It is pricey and I don't want to take my chance of getting an unprofessional instructor again - I'd be paying to waste my time. read more

I took the beginners painting class and loved it! My teacher was amazing , fun and helpful! I learned how to paint a wash Over the whole canvas, draw out my painting , see the painting in shapes, mix color and finally paint. She was very encouraging and let us know their we're no mistakes and no way was wrong . I now am going to purchase my own paint set mind you before this day only art I ever took was drawing senior year of high school! I am now 25! I loved my course this past winter at The Art Studio NY! I hadn't taken any drawing classes since Jr High School and my instructor Charlotta was engaging and thorough and made us feel into the experience rather than think our way into it. As an adult, it was so refreshing to be a beginner at something and discover I was really good at it! Had such a fun experience here with my boyfriend for Valentine's Day! We were the first couple to arrive on that snowy day and were greeted by "B" and another woman. B ended up being our instructor. Although, we did arrive early she made sure to accommodate us with anything that we needed. The art studio is in the basement of an apartment type building, it is such a nice intimate, but comfortable space. I surprised my boyfriend with this "couples painting class" as did many of the other ladies with their boyfriends. There were maybe six other couples with us, and we had a brief meet and greet before the session began. B was such an excellent teacher and so many people were amazed by mine and my boyfriend's "original masterpiece". Although, we had a picture to model after she encouraged us to think outside the box. Along with painting we were served wonderful, snacks, and beverages, with nice modern music playing in the background. It was definitely a date to remember! Thank you again B! My first class was beginner's painting and I realized that I didn't really like painting and that I wanted to draw. This class from THe Art Studio was taught at the MET. Although this was described as a beginners class..it definitely was not. The instruction was much too fast...we were asked to draw statutes at the museum. Incorporating many various techniques. Frankly, I found the class very frustrating! The Beginner's Drawing Class at the MET is a great way to learn to draw and see the MET in a new way. Our instructor, Isaac Ruff was fantastic. He started with a demonstration of drawing basics, then built on that foundation after giving us time to practice each technique. He also went around to every student and provided positive feedback and excellent tips for improvement. I highly recommend this class and Isaac as an instructor! read more

DO NOT GO HERE- the environment is not safe- i came at 705 pm for a pastel class-the elev operator yelled t me why i s pressing the button- he let other people on and would not let me- he was up and down few times and demanded apology for pressing the button - he looked mentally crazy and acted that way-t eh super told me to apologize ti him and he left the buildling- i called the art studio and no on picked up at 715 pm -the super returned 10 mins later- and let me go 10 mins on we went another elevator- and i arrived 730 pm - the teacher never told the coordinator- and i was scared i wont get out of the building- there is no emerg exit and no way to get to basement level except by maniac operator- class ok- but i am demanding refund;- i composed myself and the maniac said nothing as i left with the group- there ws also weird message on receipt re refund- like none ever given no mattter what- I KNOW WHY THEY ARE SELLINg WTIH GROUPON OR TRYING TO - NEVER GO HERE-YOU MAY NOT GET TO CLASS DUE TO CRAZY ELEVATOR OPERATOR AND A STUDIO WHO NEVER ANSWERS PHONE TO HELP in response to the business owner.. oh the video of the elevator operator shows what..? that he refused several times to allow me in he elevator..did you see him screaming at me .. and his violation of his job duties? show me the video .. and no other way is available to get to class in the basement, show me the video? and its funny how you try to attack me or my reviews.. my reviews have to do with your unsafe location issues ..no safety of everyone- there is no way out of that basement studio and you can be stranded or worse at the whim of a psycho elev op ...rebecca your response to my review is pathetic and doesnt address the safety issue and building violation of your art studio.. no stairway route up or down in an emergency. available. the super disallowed me the route .and no on was there to answer the phone while at 7 pm while a class while a class was going on . rebecca response is pathetic coverup/.. does the video show me getting in the elevator to go to class.. rather it shows the elevop refusing me to enter several times.. you have charged my credit card for a class i and other could not get to.. oh and another woman in the class also complained about the same guy's attitude.. i fail to believe this is the first time.. your customer service is very poor and so is the way your business is run.. and you offer no refunds ever it states over and over on your receipt after one pays.. pathetic read more
