I found a Livingsocial deal to a 4 hour jewelry making class. It was super fun- instructors were nice and informative. I was a little bummed because there were too many people in the class, and I ended up not being able to make more thin rings. The instructor was constantly being chased around so I pretty much tried to DIY everything. In this four hour jewelry making class, I made one thick band with a polished finished and a thin band with texture and matte finish. You start off with a metal wire then you get your finger measured to get the desired length of wire. Then you start to bend the wire in a ring shape. When you get close enough you have to file down the edges and make sure they are aligned to close perfectly. The next step is the soldering process where you heat up the metal and add a filler metal to join the two ends together. After you heat up the metal you have to pickle the metal to clean off the oxidation. After pickling you need to file, polish and then clean your jewelry. As you can see it is a long and time consuming process, I have definitely realized the worth of handmade jewelry- making even one of these was time consuming and takes a lot of effort. What was difficult was that I started out with the thick band it took forever to bend the metal even with tools! Before you can apply a metal and piece them together, the opening must be filed down and match exactly otherwise your opening won't close perfectly. read more

Hubby and I decided to take one of their classes as our Valentine's Day date! We saw them listed on "How About We" and signed up for the 10 person class after seeing their rave yelp reviews. We showed up on a Sunday afternoon for our 4 hour ring-making class (1-5pm). As others have noted, their studio is a little difficult to find. It actually appears to be in a residential building. The 1st floor is the show studio and the garden floor is where the workshop is. (They really need to put some sort of sign out, or at least label the buzzer outside.) The owner of the studio is Caroline, and her apprentice and instructor for the class was Carolyn. I was surprised at the depth which she went into while teaching the class. She showed us from start (even using math equations to measure the length of silver we'd need) to finish (polishing the inside and outside of the ring) everything that went into making the ring(s) and then was very hands-off, wanting each of us to have the entire ring-making experience. She taught us how to use all the different ring-making tools (measuring calipers, hand saw, mini blow torches, etc). The toughest part of the class was filing away the edges of the ring so that they could be soldered together perfectly. Because I was so terrible at this, my ring kept getting smaller and smaller as I filed it away. Eventually it was too small and I was frustrated and wanted to start from the beginning. Carolyn, instead of letting me give up, suggested we create something to place into the the ring. So we melted down more silver into a ball and soldered that into my ring and it turned out perfect! I was able to make 2 thin silver rings in a hammered texture. Hubby worked with the more difficult 1.5mm thick silver ring. He didn't add any texture to the ring, preferring the smooth silver. He filed in a roman numeral design on the outside that was our wedding anniversary date. It turned out really special and awesome looking. After the class (which was super laid back. They let us linger until 5:30pm) we wandered back up to the show studio and shared a glass of wine while Caroline set up an artsy and amazing photo shoot with our new works of art! :) Hubby and I later agreed Carolyn was not only a fantastic instructor, but she looked a lot like Megan Fox, if Megan Fox smiled a lot more. hahaha. I found Liloveve through Coursehorse. After driving Coursehorse up the damn wall and back down again, I finally got to take a class through them. I almost went with another jewelry place in Williamsburg but these guys got better reviews/feedback on Yelp. Finding Liloveve wasn't a straight forward path. I thought I was smart too planning out my directions beforehand. When they planned the street grid, did they take a lesson from Queens? Grand does this weird thing where it becomes another street just by crossing from one corner to another but then magically becomes Grand again if you keep walking....So I get to the address and I see that it looks residential. There's no sign or label on the bell or ANY indication that they're there. I was starting to wonder what I had gotten myself into. This is why the first half of the star got dropped in my rating. It did turn out to be the right place and I'm led into a basement of awesomeness. Almost. They're very well organized and had all the necessary tools and equipment set up for the course. And everyone had their own workstation. My only complaint was that there was no AC. I think my inner child died of a heat stroke when they shut the door because of mosquitoes coming in from the basement door that led up to the sidewalk. With that and a bunch of burning lamps and a handful of torches....This is why the other half of the star got dropped. The overall class was great. The instructor was nice, knowledgeable and patient. Her teaching was thorough and she gave everyone an equal amount of attention. She stayed on top of who was doing what as far as safety goes. This was for the one day ring workshop. I got to make three rings--2 thin and one band. I liked it a lot. I'm considering doing another class in the Fall. The best thing I like about their classes is that they provide everything for you. I almost took a ring class elsewhere and cancelled it after it gave a whole list of materials I had to buy. But yea if you're thinking of doing a jewelry class, they're the place to go. read more

I took a ring making class here and it was awesome. We learned how to cut, file and bend metal. I found out how to needle metal to make it easier to bend, how to solder and use polishing machines. I also learned how to oxidize the metal. We learned techniques to hammer or saw designs into the ring. I felt like the class was small enough that I could get one on one instruction and was also given a lot of creative leeway. It was a great 4 hour class and I felt proud of my finished product. Each tiny detail was done to perfection and we could tell that was her mission-- to create a piece for that person with their personalty and her expertise in suggesting ways to make it happen. For several years, i wanted to have someone make me that special statement piece from a stone my life partner gave me in a ring. It ocured to me there, that Caroline had to be that person. I roughly sketched out the idea, and she took it from there knowing what the metal can do and what stone placement would best suit weight, balance and wow factors. I picked up this piece last week, and she presented it to me in tissue paper. I unwrapped it carefully and as I got to the last unfolding, I was taken off my bench with the sheer genius and quality of this statement piece. I had no idea it could ever look this way. We could not have been happier with our experience and final results. We went to several places looking for wedding bands (Liloveve was our 4th place) and instantly knew we'd found the right place. Caroline listened and was very patient while I explained what I was looking for. I found out about Liloveve through LivingSocial and took their 4 hour ring making course and absolutely loved it! My experience was great from beginning to end. I was having issues signing up for a class through their webpage so I called and was able to reserve seats for myself and a friend as well as had any questions answered. They sent a confirmation email for the class registration as well as a reminder email a few days before the class. Even though I had read on Yelp (as well as their email) that the building was a bit hard to find, I still walked right by it. When I got into the building, I was warmly greeted by Emilie and showed where to go. The class was taught by Brice, whom I found to be a great teacher. We were given a little background about the task, taught how to measure and prep the metal, file it down, bend, solder and finally design and polish. We were given the choice of several different gauges or a thick band, which was a more daunting task and took longer. I chose the thickest gauge wire and was able to make 2 rings in the time frame. The most tedious task was filing the two edges of the metal perfectly to make the ends match for soldering. I had a really dificult time with the first ring but filing the second was a breeze! Designing the ring was a lot of fun. We were taught different hammer and sawing techniques. I think we had about 8 or 9 people in the class so we were each able to get one on one attention and help from the instructor. One tip I have is to have short nails. I kept thinking that as I was sawing and polishing since I was working with such small objects. I will definietly be looking into taking more classes here! read more

I took the four hour ring making intensive with Kate as the instructor. I found it to be a very informative, challenging, fun, and rewarding experience. I found that the class size was a little large, considering that it is a very small studio and only one instructor for the class. I feel that the class could have been more productive if a reference guide or outline of the steps involved had been provided for each student, so that the instructor wouldn't be overwhelmed by questions from every student. Took a silversmithing class here. It was super fun, and the instructors were obviously well-informed. This was a satisfying creative outlet, and I looked forward to it every week. I definitely left with a better appreciation for jewelry and an understanding of what goes into making a piece. I think that everyone who signs up for one of the class series (not sure how it works for the one-off workshops) should be pretty aware that on top of the class price, which is not insignificant, you will be putting a substantial amount of money into materials. I totally get that jewelry making is not a cheap craft, and that this is an independent business, but the price of tools and additional materials to work with caught me off guard. Not sure if they have made any changes in recent months, but a good warning and estimate of additional costs would be helpful when signing up. I would say that if you are legitimately looking to be able to make your own jewelry independently, their classes might not quite be for you. There were numerous instances where instead of further explaining something I wasn't quite getting, the instructor just took my piece from me and finished the task themselves. Helpful for ending up with a piece of jewelry that looked decent and wasn't a mess, but not a solid learning experience. This is not a positive or negative by any means, it's just a question of what you're looking to eventually get out of this. It also might be different in the higher level classes and, I am sure, is partly due to time constraints as well. And finally, because I think a lot of people take classes in NYC in an attempt to make friends (it's hard!), there was like...no socializing in my class. At all. Everyone sort of had their heads down at each of their stations. So again, not a negative, just something to keep in mind if that is one of the reasons why you are signing up. read more

I brought my vintage engagement ring in to be fixed when one of the prongs came loose, and she took the time to explain what it looked like had happened and what she'd need to do to fix it. I got my ring back a few days later in better shape than it had ever been -- I had taken it elsewhere to get re-tipped a year earlier, but clearly they hadn't done a good job. We took a ring-making class with these guys recently (bought a groupon at a very reasonable price). We loved the class! Our instructor was Bryce. He gave us a safety lesson and some basic instructions to begin with and then let us go off on our own to start creating. He brought us back together a few times (as we were advancing to the next steps in the ring-making process) to give us some additional lessons. This was great because, had he gone through everything at the beginning of the class, I'm sure we would have gotten some things wrong! They were very pleasant on the phone and said I could bring it in that day. When I got to the right address, there was no sign out front so I had to call to be buzzed in (just be aware of that). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED The personal attention that Caroline offers through her studio is very rare. In fact, most of the classes she offers encourage individuality instead of following rigid guidelines as to what you are supposed to create in the class (as, unfortunately, do other studios and schools). The owner of the studio is very accomodating. I love the variety of her classes, too: from silver to wax, to enamel and then the more advanced classes, too. So, you can progress with Caroline's help from a total beginner to being able to create quite a lot of designs on your own. I have been taking classes from Caroline for a while and disagree with the other comment about the "political" climate. I'm in no way a flaming liberal myself, but have never heard political comments from Caroline, the owner (wacky radical students happen everywhere in this city). I don't think any of it is ever encouraged - otherwise I would not come back myself. read more

The owner of Liloveve is talented and smart but a bit cold and uncaring in the way she operates her studio. She is a good teacher for the most part in being organized and able to explain things, but if you don't understand something and ask her questions, she may simply repeat herself rather than trying to understand your question. And she sometimes cancels class without telling you -- she will simply send you an email and not bother pick up the phone to call. Regarding the other teachers she brings in to teach, some are good and some not. One of the wax carving teachers was very disorganized and spoke very bad English even though she explained certain aspects of the class well and was effective one-on-one. The teacher of the locket class seemed to lack certain metalsmithing abilities, in terms of how long to heat a metal in soldering, and spent party of the class working on her own projects rather than teaching. Also, if you are a male who is not radically liberal, you may not feel comfortable with some of the people in the class who even look down on others who use actual animal antlers in their jewelry. read more

We designed our engagement ring with Caroline nearly 2 years ago. She spent a lot of time with us, explaining things, and we thought we'd really found someone really special to work with. Six months later, when it came to my mother's 60th birthday we went back to get a bracelet made. I understand she had personal issues, but not only did she miss the date for my mother's birthday party (we could only tell her what we had got for her) but she ignored emails, phone calls etc. We finally received the bracelet about 2 months afterwards, and we tried to be understanding, even though she didn't keep track of payments, and we didn't get the half refund she promised. My husband has tried to contact her 3 times in the last 2 months to get bands to match my ring, and she just does not respond. Perhaps she doesn't want to work with us anymore, but more fool us I think for giving someone so many chances. I honestly wish I could say better, and maybe you'll have more luck.
