The food at Sottise is okay for a French Restaurant but the atmosphere is more a scene than a bistro. Musics and general noise level make conversation difficult. Price point is high, especially the wines. Menu is confusing. Difficult to know what is am entree vs appetizer. The redeeming quality is the service which is plentiful and attentive. read more

Service was excellent! So, run, don't walk for their amazing French onion soup! We got an outside, porch seat and it was a simply lovely evening. We loved the baguette w the buttery escargot, and the liver pate was delicious. I ordered an old fashion and it was so refreshing w an oversized ice cube that made it hard to resist not ordering another one--! Parking was a little tricky on a Friday night. This part of town is lively w lots of people walking the sidewalks, but at some point a larger parking space is gonna be a priority. We will return to this quaint White House for French food again. Despite the midweek visit, Sottise remained busy but the service never made us feel rushed and the staff worked well together to ensure that every table enjoyed their visit. What a pleasant surprise! A trendy urban French restaurant is not the type of place I frequent. I'm a middle-aged white dude from the suburbs--15 years older than the average patron, by my observation. I tried Sottise because I received a generous gift card from a coworker. The ambiance was quaint but vibrant. The service was quirky, but first class. The food was small portion, but filling and freaking delicious. I'm not big on caviar, so I stuck with familiar sounding fare--deviled eggs (we ordered a second plate they were so good), a French twist on a grilled ham and cheese (best I've ever had), and some sort of roasted beef plate (how the hell did they cook it so tender?). It ain't cheap, but if you're looking for a unique experience with very special service and food, you won't be disappointed. My only advice to the owners would be to turn down the music on the patio--hard for this old guy to have a conversation. Or, better yet, play some French bistro music, for Pete's sake! read more

This is an issue rampant with Phoenix restaurants - we are here to have dinner with friends and family, we're not clubbing. Caveat - I'm in my mid twenties and love a night out on the town, so don't think I'm some old fuddy dud. The food was good although I'd say not quite worth the price point. But, despite living in the neighborhood where this could be a regular spot for us, I will absolutely not be back since I won't be able to hear my friends talk. Fantastic place great food and service!!! Excellent for special occasions and romantic nights out. The only negative that prevents me from giving them 5 stars is the DJ. We were there on 9-17 when they had a live DJ which was play vary nice jazz music just WAY to loud. The music made it hard to communicate with the wait staff and with each other at the table. One of the best places I've eaten in Phoenix. Don't miss out on the baked Brie with the calvados honey. We also split the squash ravioli and steak. Quite an interesting new place from the people who started Restaurant Progress. A few things to note. One, it's small. Very small. We had a table for 4 reserved and the only true table for 4 is a very small round hi-top table with backless stools. There are more normal tables for 4 on their patio. The old house is gorgeous and offers a very nice setting for dining. They have an amazing cocktail list. Incredibly unique offerings. I had the Sommer and loved it. I can't give any feedback on their full wine list, for some reason we weren't given it to peruse. I didn't even realize one existed until I saw another table with it. We did get the per glass wine list. It's a very nice little list. Service was very attentive. Food was really really good. Baguette with butter and fig jam was nice. Warmed olives were delicious, although they were not served warm. French onion soup had amazing flavor but had too much bread in it. We wanted more broth to enjoy. We had to discard some of the bread. We ordered the baked Camembert. Wonderful. But it' needed to be served with a bigger portion of bread. The mussels were fantastic. The broth was outstanding. I wish it had been served with bread. The gravlax board was amazing! And the pasta dish was amazing. Another thing to note is that the portions are on the smaller side and lend themselves to ordering multiple dishes and sharing. The salted caramel cream dessert was wonderfully tasty. Overall this was a really nice dining experience. It was only night 4, so we totally ignored any little kinks that need to be ironed out...and there weren't too many. Next time I would make sure we didn't end up at the little corner table but most everything we ordered we would be happy to eat again. read more

My wonderful man surprised me by booking a table at this delightful , back in time French Bistro. The moment we walked in, the atmosphere was bubbly, warm and cozy. Brought the feel of our favorite restaurants long gone such as House of Tricks . Its cozy so if you dont want to hear your neighbors conversation or accidentally bump their chair, dont come.They had a DJ Spinning some suitable french music. The drinks were presented beautifully and every starter we had was perfect. We like to graze. Starting with the creation of Oyster steak tartare , we decided the kitchen was on fire. A lovely bite with the smoothness of oyster and delicate tartare. The deviled eggs were very good and seem to be popping up as a starter everywhere. We especially were impressed with the Onion soup. After reading all its accolades we were very excited for our first time at Sottise and made a reservation for a friday night at 8:30. Things started off promising but sadly ended in an epic fail. After ordering drinks and our courses (three small plates and beef bourguignon as the main) we were enjoying ourselves and finishing up our last small plate when the manager came to our table and told us they were out of the beef. Confused because we'd already placed our order, I told him "no worries, we've already ordered". It was only after he repeated himself that I understood what he was saying - more than 20 minutes after taking our order they couldn't fill it. When we questioned how it happened he told us the exact time we'd ordered (8:55), as if that should matter to me, and that they'd been out of it for over an hour. He explained what was left on the menu, but never apologized, acknowledged the mistake or offered to fix it. When we told him we weren't happy and that we didn't need to hear anything else because his service was lacking he said "it's a two way street" which sounded like he was threatening to kick us out of the restaurant. Feeling completely done we finished our drinks, asked for the check and left. Our original server never came back and when the manager brought the check he said "I've made the requisite adjustments", meaning he took the food we never received off the bill. As if that would even be a question. To be clear, the issue wasn't that they were out of a majority of their main dishes, because our server told us what they were out of when we ordered. It's that she didn't tell us about the beef, allowed us to order it, and then the manager came over 20 minutes after we'd placed our order, never acknowledged what happened and when questioned, tried to pass it off to us for having a "later " reservation. My friend and I had a reservation for Sat., at 5:45pm. I made the reservation myself. First of all if your heading to this restaurant for the first time there's a couple of things to know. It's a house and the sign is posted on a pillar. It's so low that the cars parked in front block the sign. We drove around 6 times until I called and found out that was the restaurant. Secondly there is no parking. We had to walk two blocks and while that's not alot my friend has COPD. When we got there they told us they could not accommodate us inside; even thou I explained why my friend had COPD. We left and went to Renata's in the Biltmore. The Restaurant is very small inside and they have a porch outside. It's very expensive and the decorum and location are undesirable. If I were you I'd find a different french restaurant. read more

As much as we want a good French restaurant in Phoenix, we aren't ready for one yet, and Sottise is proof of that. There is nothing here that you cannot get that is better somewhere else. Boquerones, go to Pa'La. Mussels, pretty much anywhere. Their version is tiny, and butter heavy versus white wine and balanced. The bourguignon was a short rib dish, not actually beef bourguignon (aka should be a stew)...which was the best item that we tried...however not as described. Also, the short rib at The Gladly is superior, or even on a Friday at Little Miss BBQ, however the later is very different...the former just better in every way. The duck came out scorched to within an inch of its life, it was replaced...however the replacement was average at best.. Too sweet and no crispy edges. Just soggy cooked duck. Virtu would be the superior duck...however if you are going there you should be getting the octopus appetizer at a minimum and would be rewarded with superior food and service. The Vesper cocktail was well made (other than shaken and not stirred in true James Bond fashion), however the Bijou was an odd choice. Server in an up glass with a "whiskey ice cube" instead of mixed properly...the dilution didn't work properly. Please go to Citizen Public House for proper Bijou mixology (when they had/have it on the menu). The dessert we tried the seasoned gallate. which would have been better if received from Essence Bakery (although what wouldn't when discussing French pastry). The service was French like (casual / cold /average - which is fine), however if you are going to have service and price of the 7th...you better back it up with the food. This reminds of my grandma house where Imy well timed record changing happened when I was eating my salad. Service was lacking training required. Octopus and salmon roe were very tasty on its own.
