So, in fairness to the restaurant, I want to make sure that I'm transparent. I ordered Sosoba take out to pick up at 7:20PM and got there at 7:48PM. The staff was all super friendly in our brief interaction and there were a lot of people hanging out at the bar on a Monday night, sipping drinks casually. The vibe seemed like a nice place to be for a drink out with friends. Kind of romantic with a low lit ambience. Two stars is because my food was just not that great. I had the Vegan bowl and I replaced the noodles with ramen. Noodles and broth were separate so I warmed up the broth in the microwave. The ramen was really overdone - I'm not sure if that's just because I was late or if it's because that's how they cook them. I make ramen at home with fresh noodles and these noodles just tasted cheap to me. I paid $17 for the bowl which seems fair for the portion size but the noodles really were not good. I didn't even try eating them after my first few bites. The tofu on the top of the ramen had a great spicy sauce that I liked but like many other reviewers have said this bowl just lacked flavor. Veggies were cooked well and broccoli was firm. I ordered an egg but didn't get it. I was hoping this would be a great local place to order take out from as I'm trying to support local businesses in my neighborhood but it would take a lot to make me come back. I ordered the mac n cheese appetizer but didn't even try it. Disappointing. I'll keep my eyes on future reviews to see if things change. read more

Closer to 3.5. We had a dinner here and parking was tough but we found a street spot a few minutes away. The atmosphere is pretty cool, I loved the neighborhood and the vibe. Yeah, I'm that person who uses the word "vibe" non-ironically, deal with it. Also I noticed after typing this that other people have used this word as well, so it fits. We got a table with high top seating and looked at their menu. We ordered two appetizers: balls of fire (mac & cheese balls with hot sauce) and General Tso Tso cauliflower. The balls were okay, the hot sauce wasn't that hot and they were on the larger side so I split one. Absolutely loved the cauliflower, the flavors were perfect and I loved that sauce. For my entree, I got the Mothra, which was a vegetarian noodle dish with broccoli, fried tofu, bok choy, peas (didn't see any), mint and basil in a green curry. I did not like it! It tasted like a combination of coconut (probably used coconut milk) and lemon, and was not good. I tried some of the ramen dishes, and they were fine. Two of us ordered the katsu ramen, and asked for no bacon, but they came with it. They took them back and got us new ones, hopefully. Our server was nice and made a joke when we asked about the tip suggestions on the receipt, which was funny. I liked their hot sauce station, so many to choose from but I went with the classic, Sriracha. It was good of them to have veggie options since a lot of the dishes seemed to have red meat or pork. Experience: SoSoBa "The Nonstop Noodle House." They have definitely made it to my list of the top noodle houses in Phoenix, and being located downtown next to Lola's coffee shop, they will also become my most visited. Food: The tostadas we're unexpectedly amazing! You can mix and match and play around with the ramen section, so I ordered the "Mic Drop" with the spicy tonkotsu broth. My friend loves the trio of bao buns and enjoyed the "Ball of Fire" as well. Drinks: We tried the Echigo Flying IPA and the Kyoto Matcha IPA. Vibe: They had indoor and patio seating, but because it was a warm day, we sat inside. It wasn't too crowded so the noise levels were decent, and they had good music playing at a considerate volume. My dad has a shop he owns up the block and informed me how he tends to frequent this place a lot. So we went during my visit and man the noodles were so good. The employees who work there had some "colorful" language that didn't bother me much at all but I found myself wondering if the wrong person were hearing what I was hearing, what impression would they have? Back to the food..my dad ordered the "Sweet Chili Calamari" and I was all for it. I wish I didn't have to share with him LOL He ordered the "Mic Drop" which he swears by with extra Kimchi, and I ordered the "Hostile Takeover". Both were pretty damn good to me, I think next time I visit I will have a hard time figuring out which one to try. There are a few items on the menu I didn't get a chance to try during this visit but the place didn't disappoint. This is my second review of SoSoBa. And we've eaten here several times. Unfortunately, our last visit was not nearly as good as we expected. We took my dad who loves Asian food. We had 2 ramens, seaweed, salad, fried cauliflower, pork, and kimchi, tostada and chicken wings. The chicken wings were so sweet I could hardly eat them. The cauliflower was also too sweet and drenched in sauce. Way too heavy and much sweeter than it had been in earlier visits. The tostada was OK, but had very little kimchi on it. Been way better with enough kimchi so that you could have a taste with every bite. The Ramen did not have the flavor it used to have. The broth was, just OK. It used to be super flavorful. We had the Micdrop & Hostile Takeover. I had a glass of wine, Pinot noir that really was not good. The others had the whiskey which they enjoyed. Service is always been sort of iffy, but it was definitely not good this time. The table was not clean. It took quite a while for the server to even bring us water. We didn't get checked on and no one offered soy sauce or hot sauce... Which, unfortunately the ramens really needed. Far better ramen at other restaurants in town. Though some of the reviews say that this place is inconsistent with their food, I believe you should try it for yourself and then judge! I thought the servers were amazing. My food came in 10 minutes, which is reasonable. The food was hot and yummy. The meat and tofu tasted fresh as well as the veggies. I eat everything including the broth. I personally thought it was very yummy! For a small shop the place looks nice and has a small patio seating out in the front. We stopped in SoSoBa for a quick late dinner with my family. When we entered the host barely spoke and didn't give off a friendly attitude. He acted as if he didn't know why we were there... ummmmm to eat?! Anyway. He seated us and walked away. Didn't explain the menu was on the barcode on the table, didn't bring water.. eventually a lovely server/bartender came over and brought us water and explained how to use the barcode. No matter when I come here, no matter how busy or not busy the restaurant is, it is guaranteed that at least 30 minutes will elapse between getting seated and having someone check on you.According to my partner this isn't the case if you sit inside but if you don't want to check on a patio, why have one? It's nice to get away from the loud music and/or being our dog. Additionally, if the restaurant is busy at all you'll wait at least 30 minutes for your food no matter where you're sitting. I'm not sure if these issues are related to understaffing, poor shift management, all of the above, or something I'm forgetting to mention, but I've given SoSoba at least 4 chances now and they fail every time. I was disappointed with the Mac and cheese ball. It was just cried Mac&cheese with a squirt of hot sauce. This was my first time at this location. Have been to the one in Flagstaff. Just the same menu, however, the space here is comparatively bigger. The location is on point for this ramen stop. However, the ramen are average and little pricey for the taste and value of money. I had the Tantanmen ramen and my husband had the Hostile Take over. The broth of my ramen was really good, very rich flavors, the minced pork was cooked well, but the eggs were okay, just the usual boiled egg. My big problem with the ramen was the noodles. They were not cooked perfectly, because there was this whole bunch of noodles completely entangled and sticky. See the pictures. Next, the Hostile Takeover was good as per my husband's comments. The customer service was okay. Nothing so over the top. Just usual check in on if everything was okay. I really liked the vibe and the location of Sosoba. But the ramen not so much. My husband and I each ordered the udon (I got vegetarian) and thought it was good, with the right amount of a spicy kick, but not amazing. All was forgiven with the General TsoTso Cauliflower, though, which could have been a meal in its own right. Absolutely incredible and a very large portion. I would not recommend this location. We had a terrible experience here! A group of friends and I came in and the waiter told us it was about a 10 minute wait and we immediately got seated. After we got seated we didn't see our waiter for about 30 minutes before we ordered drinks. We only ordered 1 beer and waters all around. Took about 30 minutes to get our drinks. When she dropped off our water, one friend went ahead and ordered his meal because he was ready to order and the rest of us needed more time. About another 20 minutes until our waiter came back. As she was taking our orders, my friends food came out but they brought out his order wrong. When he pointed out he ordered something different, she immediately got mad at him and started yelling at him that his order was right and that he did not order a different ramen. My friend repeated his order to her and when she realized she was wrong she stormed off and never got the rest of our orders. She never came back to check on us, half of us didn't get to order (me included). When we would try to get her attention she would give us a dirty look and walk away. The bartender also give us horrible attitude when she dropped off a few more beers because she asked us something but we didn't hear her the first time so when we asked her to repeat herself, she acted like it was the end of the world that she had to repeat herself. Once again we tried getting someone's attention because we needed more water and the waiter flat out ignored us. She came back about 40 minutes after she got our orders trying to act all nice because it was time to pay. When she was doing the total for everyone she got mad that half of us ordered and when I tried to tell her she walked away again. Our waiter was a small petite girl with short hair and bangs.
