There is absolutely nothing wrong with this place if you like tacos. I wanted a variety so I went for their version of carne asada (costillo) and pollo (chicken). Asked the cashier if two was 'enough' and he said he usually goes for three as a small guy so I asked which his favorite was and the cabeza (beef head) was recommended. I went all in; $3.5 per taco, rang me up, asked for my first name and first initial of my last name. Dinner set me back $18 and some change to include my semi-chilled Modelo Negra from the reach in fridge.
The service was great despite a five minute queue at 730pm; the cashier was polite, patient, helpful, and complimentary (heard him give a welcoming salutation to the tattooed lesbians ahead of me who gave praises to Sonoratown's LA joints).
We originally sat at the window but my friend was cold from the strong ceiling air so we moved to the high top counter underneath the hand-painted Sonoratown logo wall as you walk in. My name was called twice as the server walked around with my tacos on a yellow parchment serviette triangle on a green plate. My friend had a yellow plate for his burrito 2.0. Both plates came with a grilled green onion strand and two perfectly mandolined radish slices. Everything was cool as you'd expect from SoCal taquerias.
This is where my average rating begins. The flavors of complimentary salsa (verde y roja) were excellent. The heat levels were perfect, they were fresh and bursting with chile goodness. The tacos... were not so inspiring. I believed the hype of what I read- 'LA taqueria...flavor...awards-' I wanted to give them a shot in my Long Beach. The chunky street tacos included perfectly shredded cabbage. They win best shredded cabbage for sure. Their flour tortillas were super nice too. I guess they sell them as two bags were packaged in street taco and burrito/quesadilla sizes by the cash register. The best flavor was the cabeza, hands down; the cashier was right. The carne and pollo... maybe the flavor was left in LA or Sonora? Real talk, it was basic. It was clean but not very 'tasty'. Although I didn't eat all day, my mouth was ready to party. It felt like I ate two cabbage tacos with red salsa and I couldn't tell you which was chicken and which was beef. The subtlety of the cabeza was the only different, redeeming and memorable trait of my dinner with its green salsa. I would return to try the same tacos without the red salsa party to see if I can taste something that I missed.
I wanted to like this place despite all the ish talking my friend made of all his daily taco ventures working in LA- and being the biggest loudmouth cynic I know. I wanted to prove him wrong by trying out Sonoratown. But maybe he was (sort of) correct- whether a new hot taqueria or a street vendor, 'they're all the same'. I disliked him for that but there may be some validity behind his statement. To me, 3 stars is a very good thing; Sonoratown is a good restaurant-it just wasn't amazing or excellent deserving of 4-5 stars. read more
