About two years ago, I regularly visited this place every Friday and occasionally on Saturdays, despite the roughly 20-mile drive from my home. At the time, I enjoyed the food and considered the drive worthwhile. However, after the restaurant changed cooks, I noticed a decline in the overall quality and stopped returning. Today, I decided to give it another try and stopped by for a small bite. I ordered the vampiro, but unfortunately, it did not meet my expectations. The meat lacked noticeable seasoning or flavor, which was particularly disappointing given the restaurant's claim of cooking with mesquite coals. The tortilla topping also appeared to be more like a pre-made tostada than a tortilla toasted over an open flame. Traditionally, I would expect a lightly charred tortilla, which adds flavor and texture to the dish. Based on this visit, the quality has not returned to what I remember from two years ago. Solid go-to for tacos. I got chicken and nopal on the taco combo plate which comes with a drink (nopal was a tad salty) I chose the watermelon juice and it was sooo refreshing! My husband and I came to the conclusion that the food is salty, not sure if it's the cheese they use, but it is definitely above the average seasoning of salt. A friend told us to try this place out & I'm so glad we did! The pork taco was amazing and had so much flavor! The asada taco was pretty good as well. The salsas were awesome too, each taco was $4.95, on the pricier side in my opinion but I would say worth it! Stopped in and ordered a carne asada street taco and an asada vampiro. The asada vampiro was the clear standout. The crispy shell with melted cheese took the same asada and elevated it, more texture, more flavor, and just more fun to eat. If I came back, this is what I'd order again without hesitation. Some of that is personal preference -- I'm not a huge street-taco guy -- and some of it felt like it could've been a touch fresher off the grill. Not bad, just not a knockout. The restaurant had a great smoky aroma, and the salsa was solid. I'm usually a salsa-bar fan, but even with the small containers, the flavors were good and complemented the food well. I like this spot! Super friendly and welcoming, our pup was greeted with a little treat the moment we walked in, and we were offered samples of any of the meats since it was our first time. We tried the asada steak, pollo asado chicken, and tripa tripe tacos. The meats and tortillas were both delicious. The tripe is fried rather than a menudo style, which is what I was expecting, but the different texture worked well. Even though I know they just made it, the dishes didn't seem super fresh or warm. With the mulita, I felt the cheese could've been more melted. The flavors all felt bit dull to me too. Not sure if they had other salsas but one of the ones they give you are very flavorful. Neither were really spicy. Also couldn't leave without refilling that bomb horchata! Frank greeted us and asked was it our first time there. It was and he explained everything including providing a taste test jicama flavored meat. It wasn't my favorite as it was bitter to me. I ordered a chicken burrito with all the yummies in it, rice, beans, guacamole, chunks of chicken, cheese and salsa on the side. I also ordered a Jamaica drink. My total was $17. We sat outside on their spacious patio. It took about 5-7 mins for my burrito to be served. I bit right in and then remembered to take a pic! This burrito was filling and delicious. The chicken was seasoned well. Customer service was top tier! As we were finishing out lunch, Frank came to check on us and asked if we needed anything and to tell us we could get beverage refills. Tacomasa is serving up very clean feeling Mexican food where all of their menu items are easily customizable. They have a large menu ranging from burritos, tacos, mulitas, quesadillas and more. A combo is a cool option that comes with rice, beans, and a small drink. Rice portion is really small in a little container but the guacamole is so good. I like how the guacamole is not too oniony. My go-to right now is there carne asada tacos. Service is awesome too, they are very communicative and answer all your questions with ease. Last time while they were cooking, there were so many flames and the whole place was super smoky so it was tough eating inside. For my meats, I chose asada and pollo - the asada was so, so good. It was tender and flavorful with just the right amount of char. The pollo was fine but obviously not as good as the asada. Compared to the asada, it was rather bland. The real star was actually the corn tortilla. The tortilla was pliable and giving so much masa. I also shared al pastor burrito ($12.95). Well I was really looking forward to eating at this restaurant and unfortunately was very disappointed in both the food and service. Ordered 1 lengua taco, 1 asada taco, 1 adobada vampiro and lengua vampiro. Usually lengua is my favorite at any taco spot but the lengua here was not tender, bland and had pieces of fatty part of the lengua. They do give you a generous amount of meat but it doesn't matter if the texture and flavor is not right. The asada taco was the better one of the three meat choices I tried. It had a smoky taste to it which was nice. It was topped with what I think was suppose to be guacamole. The adobada had plenty of sauce but lacked flavor and salt. Some of the meet was chewing or had silver skin looking pieces. Ordered the salsa on the side but none was provided with the order. The hand made tortillas were not bad. Also tried the pepino & piña agua fresca which was ok but lack flavor and you could mainly taste the sugar/sweetness. The drinks are 3.50 but price isnt posted. The inside of the location has bar seating and very warm. There are about 6 outside tables when you get a nice breeze. They have a small parking lot that gets busy. Mas Taco Masa Por Favor These new sterile mex places popping up might be a good thing. I mean, Chipotle, etc., started it and it feels more like a cafeteria. Went twice. Done Well, my Tuesdays in the area became pretty cool thanks to finding Taco Masa. They have two more spots as well. You walk in and bam--that smell of crossing the border at O'dark 30, with the boards and beer in the 70s and 80s when Mex was still Mex. But I digress. That mesquite smell-- I was under the impression open fires in places weren't allowed. After looking around, I saw the beloved stack of mesquite and that deep bed of coals. I knew I had found "it." I was going to get the standard bean burrito sans rice to test the water, but that smell... Then that stacked pork on the turntable--Al Pastor! Ha. I asked for that meat instead of the "pastor," and I think the polite, professional gal tagged me with "gringo." I might have redeemed myself when I asked for some fried serranos inside. What arrived was nothing short of amazing. I felt like I wanted to be on the side of the road in Mex on a dirt street after surfing, but the new sterile vibe was overwhelming for me. Between the homemade tortilla that is clearly made with love, and the thick cheese that coats the tortilla, and the flavorful beans, I am in love!!!!! The Asada Mulita was also amazing.
