A Bed-Stuy Gem! I attended the grand opening brunch of this establishment and had an excellent time. Upon entry, the hostess and manager were very pleasant and welcoming. Was super excited to try Sonora. Well... excitement soon turned to disappointment. The layout of the place means there is a good chance you may be seated directly outside the bathroom. No barriers or anything so you can hear toilets flushing and can actually see inside the bathroom when people go in/out. At one point our waitress went to use the restroom and when she came out the first stop was our table, to check on us. It was just weird. The food was OK, not great. Tepache is way better. There are barely any vegetarian options. I had the veggie burrito and it consisted of a few bits of sautéed mushrooms and canned corn. The rest was rice and beans. Super disappointing. My dining companion also remarked in how bland his meal tasted. I am hoping this was just a first week hiccup and that they will get better. We could use more restaurants around here, just hope this one stays. I have been here quite a few times now, it's occasionally crowded for an event, but generally there's no problem, it's a good size anyway. Food is always good, prices range from like $2.50 tacos to I think $27 ceviche so that's unusual but I guess they're catering to everyone. Unfortunately, I have to update my review. I only had Sonora during brunch m but after going for dinner, I've never been so disappointed. Our server was extremely awkward and was doing too much while not doing enough. We continuously had to ask for water and chips/salsa. We had rice and beans on the side and the beans that tasted so salty, it was clearly an accident. Easily the worst and most confusing enchiladas that I've had in my life with barely no chicken and filled with peppers and corn. Picture attached. The food is below average. Shrimp in ceviche was not fresh at all so we couldn't eat it. This place was recommended by locals in Brooklyn on our last trip to NYC. Very chill atmosphere and excellent daily specials. They even have a DJ on Friday nights. Yummy tacos, fairly priced, my favorite was the chicken tacos, you can order all the tacos hard shell or soft. I also recommend their Sonoran burger, it's phenomenal. Another plate we tried were the Nachos de Pollo which are very good with a touch of red enchilada type seasoning, if you catch this place during happy hour they are on the Happy Hour Menu. So my friend invited me to this place to eat and drink and it's right down the street from me and I've always wanted to check it out. I read the reviews about it which were all negative but I thought it be worth a try. Boy were the reviews accurate. I ordered food and a drink off their brunch menu. The food came in on time. But I had to ask on 3 separate occasions for my drink. It took forever to get a waitress to come to our table. At that point i thought it couldn't get worst. But it did. The waitress brought the check and over charged me and I had to dispute with her. Lackluster service for average tasting food. They need a restaurant manager who can keep the floor running properly. I was excited about coming to this neighborhood restaurant. The first time I've been here I ordered out so the experience of dining in was exciting and new. But boy did things change. My friend and I ordered food and drinks together along with chips and guacamole for the table right away. 40 mins later and the food had still not arrived. When we asked the waiter (who had not been to our table once to check in during this time) he looked at us blankly and said "what food?" No exaggeration. Not only did he forget to put in our order and check on us, but when it did come out (30 mins after that) he did not apologize, or offer to compensate or anything for the food. We even asked to speak with the manager and we were told he wasn't there and the cook WILL NOT L compensate food that had already been eaten. (Mind you, it had been an hour of waiting, we were starving and of course we're going to eat the food). They had safety restrictions in place, but was able to dine inside (last time I was here it was outside dining only). Ordered a few different tacos and all were delicious. I've been here maybe 3 or 4 times and I only come back for the food, it's authentic and fresh. Other than that the service here is subpar. There's a girl who has worked there for a min and she's helped me out all but once. The first time she messed up my order and had an attitude about it, second time she just had an attitude. Another time I ordered for take out with her and she was surprisingly pleasant, tipped her over 20 percent cause I thought we were turning a new leaf, and my order was messed up that time as well. I visited Sonora during its opening week and had the best experience . The waitress Daniella was extremely nice and offered suggestions as we were ‍ indecisive. The food was savory. The dessert was delicioso! What i loved most was that we were NOT rushed, we came around 4ish, aka dinner time on a Sunday, the house got full and even though we had been there for 2 hours at that point. I went back here again because I really liked the steak here, and hoped that service would get better. The service stayed the same, and unfortunately the food got worse. Me and my partner got there and sat wherever we wanted. It took a while before someone came over to take our order. We knew from the first time to order everything at once, so we did. The food still came out on a delay. What was the annoyance with my dining experience this time was the food was waaaay overpriced, for mediocre food. I got a pina colada that had no alcohol, was about half the size of my partners beer, for 11 dollars. And when we ordered the steak and burrito, it was sub par at best, a lot of non seasoned food, and again at 28 bucks for the steak alone. Nail in the coffin was, the waiter charged by 2 bucks extra for my drink than the menu price. Had to rectify it by giving me my two bucks in cash. Tried it out again, and it only got worse. But their service is really slow and the servers we had both times we went there were rather indifferent and seemed to be bothered by us being there. There are about 25 people in this establishment at 636pm on a Saturday evening--- 7 plus servers on the floor and none of them can get anything correct. I ordered the grilled salmon with vegetables and coconut rice. My order took about 20 plus minutes to come out the kitchen. When it did come out the server took it to the incorrect table. Placed my meal in front of the lady seated at the table and walked away. She then realized she placed it on the incorrect table and went to two other tables and did the same thing. Finally she brought it over and I told her I didn't want it. She took it from the table and returned 3 minutes later with it. I said mam I don't want it it's the same plate she had the absolute NERVE TO SAY "HOW DO YOU KNOW ITS THE SAME?" Haaaaaaaaa who does she think she is? Encheladas with canned corn and peas... sprouts on everything for some reason, soggy $14 nachos that can barely serve one person... Also, the margaritas seemed to have no tequila in them at all, just sugar. The server never asked us how the food was and took forever to bring us our bill even though we were the only people in the restaurant. I wanted to like this spot, I really did. Walking distance from work and a place to share margaritas and laugh after work with my coworkers sounded like a great time so I went to scope the place out and report back. I appreciated the outside chairs and tables and the spacious modern look to the restaurant. It was clean and it looked like the set up was carefully planned with a bar set in the middle of the place. The unisex bathrooms were also very clean and roomy I am happy to report. My friend and I were encouraged to take any table we wanted to we took a table that had another table attached because it was by the window and in the center of all the action After we placed our orders we got comfortable chatting enjoyably or as enjoyably as we could because there was a table of about 6 young women who were laughing uproariously like hyenas for most of our stay. I have no idea why they weren't asked to tone it down because their volume was very bothersome. Second strike was when a lady who I can only assume walks up to us and asks if we want to move because a group of four just walked in.......I paused. Ok so why must I move my seat? I looked past her to the OTHER table with 4 chairs just behind her that she somehow didnt see......she mumbles something like "Oh, oh you dont have to move." I didnt understand why she didnt consider that before thinking it was cool to boot us from where we were settled. She could have even just put 2 tables together as the place was not packed at all and the patrons were respectfully spaced apart OR took one of our tables but she didnt even consider the inconvenience of her request to us so it left a sour taste in my mouth. Third Strike was for the food. The entrees are quite pricey but were lacking in flavor. I started to eat my steak with shrimp meal and my soul was crying out for some salt. I tried to catch the eye of someone, anyone for some salt but no one came to our aid. I started looking in my purse for an abandoned salt packet but I just had to suck it up and suffer in silence. I thought my friend was just stuffed when he didn't finish his steak burrito but he told me that next day that it was very bland. The Guac and chips were standard but omg they needed some SALT! My friend ordered steak and eggs which he says was good as well. For $45 with unlimited Mimosas or Sangria was definitely worth it. The bartender (I wish I caught her name) was awesome.
