Stopped by this afternoon while in the area. We got some tacos and with chips and guacamole. We both loved what we got! Everything was fresh and flavorful. I've been a big Gueros fan for years.. in fact the Smith and 9th location was ideal for a Bay Ridgians due to fifteen minute ride on R train. It was my post Atlantic Avenue shopping stop as well. That location had a long bar, cozy feel and great margaritas. The real star was their Shrimp tacos, fried to perfection with a kickin sauce. Unfortunately, COVID ended my perfect taco place. I remembered comparing pictures of Smith and Ninth to this one on Prospect Place. It looked tiny compared to my one and only and pledged my allegiance to the 4th Avenue location. Well folks, that all changed because today after running some errands on Franklin Avenue, I decided today was the day for a taco visit. The inside is small but the service is friendly and very welcoming. There is bar stool seating with countertop and small picnic style tables. There is an enclosed area added as well as outdoor, during COVID. I ordered my shrimp and chicken Tinga taco and my first cup of cafe con leche via Mexican Coke. I started talking to one of the employees as I waited for my food and learned this location has been here 15 years and the cook had been here around 13 years. I also learned they have a Dram Shop on Smith Street that serves burgers, sandwiches, salads, tacos of course and full bar. Now to the good stuff, my tacos! What can I say about the fried shrimp, pickled onion, slaw, cotija, cilantro cream, chipotle mayo wrapped in a flour tortilla??? I'm speechless due to savoring every bite as I write this review. The chicken Tinga taco is lip smacking good; shredded chicken cooked in a tomato sauce with adobo and topped with queso Fresca. Gueros is located between Prospect Place and Franklin Avenue. A Very divey-like restaurant in BK with pretty decent tacos. If you're looking for quick service then i'd recommend avoiding the rush which seems to be a little after 5p (esp on a weekday). The inside fits a few people along the windowsill and maybe 1 or 2 tables. If you're party more than 3, i'd recommend sitting outside. I'd come across this restaurant a few times when looking for grilled steak and chicken tacos, so of course with taco Tuesday upon us, I sprung for dinner here. When I entered, the music selections was fantastic! It was like being at your abuela's house on a Saturday morning. The cashier was really friendly and help me to decide on which items I should get. You shouldn't come here hungry because you'll end up leaving with everything. I narrowed down my choices to the chicken nachos and a steak taco. I was driving so the temptation had to go away for a Margarita. I was given a table number stand to wait in the indoor seating in the "Golden" room. The food arrived quickly..... sensational. Everyone was raving about the chicken nachos, and they were absolutely delicious. I also ordered a steak taco (86 the beans) and it was quite tasty as well. All the food was a little bit saltier than I'm accustomed to, but an extra glass of water solved that quickly, lol. It was definitely a meal I would repeat. #1 tacos in NYC and it's not even close. The only way I can explain that this place isn't rated higher is because most people in NYC are too used to eating French-Mexican or Italian-Mexican tacos (NO! Herbs de Provence is not a Mexican seasoning). These are the real deal... the only tacos we've found in NYC that taste anything like actual Mexican tacos (more like West Coast style tacos, but close enough). They're pricey, and the service is a little scattered but I'll be damned if we don't come back here next time we want a bit of realness. For a treat try the picadillo and carnitas tacos. I was fortunate enough to come across this establishment on a brisk November night before going to the Botanical Gardens here in Brooklyn. I came across the name on Apple Maps as I desperately searched for dinner using the keyword, restaurant. Most of the results were closed but alas, Gueros was my knight in shining armor. I stumbled upon a few Yelp reviews that gave me hope and it did not disappoint at all. By far my favorite taco in Brooklyn right next to La Superior and Taqueria Ramirez. As a native Angeleno, it is really nice finding a Mexican restaurant who does tacos with integrity and love. The textures and flavors were perfect in each bite and I really loved the salsa. We were just out exploring the neighborhood and walking down Franklin Ave and we got to a place where the restaurants seemed to stop so we were about to turn around then we saw this down another street and stopped. Very happy we did because it was the perfect lunch spot. You go inside to order and then they bring the food to you. The tacos are about 4/5 dollars each and they have an interesting assortment; I had the steak and also the fried avocado and jalapeño tacos- both were very good. They also have queso blanco which I don't always see in New York and it was so good! They also have some covered outdoor seating with heat lamps overhead and some that are just in the fully open air depending on your preference. read more

I ordered a fried shrimp taco and Al Pastor for my girl and then 2 fried avacado tacos for myself. They brought all 4 tacos out in the same dish. I explained that i have a shellfish allergy and couldn't eat my two tacos after they were in contact with the shrimp one. I watched the waitress go inside n simply have them out my 2 tacos in a different dish and bring them right back out to me. When I addressed the fact that doing that, changes nothing, I was met with a nasty attitude. Another waitress then tried to explain to my girlfriend that it didn't really make a difference because the shrimp is fried in the same oil as everything else! Thought the tacos here were decent also wasn't too pricey. Had the shrimp and catfish tacos; shrimp had loads of flavor but the Blackened Catfish Taco was find of bland. Also ended up getting the nachos which was pretty good as well. Lastly, the margarita size was good but wasn't that tasty recommend getting additional flavors. Omg the shrimp nachos tho!!!! They are a must have and I heard the steak nachos are also to die for. I want to try them but every time I get to Gueros the shrimp nachos are calling me. I will get the steak the next time and update!! This update is brought to you by a young woman who loves some good Tex-Mex, but that's nacho concern right? Lol! It was only right for me to do this update after my visit here a couple days ago (refer to my last check-in) since it has been a while before then; such a long while. Well, I came back to show Brooklyn how much I miss thee and how could I do that without paying GUEROS a quick visit. Did you know that Güero is a word used in Mexico and some parts of Central and South America to denote a person of fair complexion or with blond, light brown or red hair? The Mexican word Güero ultimately originates from the Spanish word huero (empty), and from the phrase huevo huero; meaning an empty egg that was lost during incubation. The phrase huevo huero was referred to as a sick person and from this came the association with the color white. Not to run off topic, I just thought that was interesting to know. Ok, ok now while the food here may not quite be your traditional Mexican, it sure is amazing. Featured in Grub Street, Thrillist, The Infatuation, Zagat, and The New York Times you will be sure to know why so many others would express their approval. The inside of the restaurant is very compressed, prior to Covid it would be like a typical NYC train car during rush hour ( if you know what I mean). There is a small bathroom inside for customer use only as well, although I am still trying to figure how they managed to fit it in. They always have and still do offer outdoor seating and are definitely taking precautions in following the health/safety regulations due to Covid. The menu is small but everything on it is packed with big flavor. It simply consists of Tacos, Quesadillas, Nachos, sides and drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic). No Burritos you ask!? Nope. None. They pretty much list each food they have and the fillings (meat or vegetable) you can add to your liking. I have tried almost everything but I usually wind up getting the same fillings. My favs are the fried chicken or brisket nachos, and the mushroom, steak or fried avocado & jalapeno tacos. The prices have always been a bit moderate at GUEROS with tacos ranging from $4.50 to $5.00 for one, quesadillas are $6.00 plain and an extra $2.00 for filling, and the nachos starting from $12.00 with an extra $4.00 for a topping of your choice. Of all of my favorites, I will start with the nachos. The nachos are a top favorite among patrons and it seems like they taste just as good as I remember since I last visited. Served in a paper boat like shaped tray, the chips are fresh yellow corn tortillas piled high with their signature queso blanco, spicy pico de gallo, sliced avocado or guacamole and a topping of your choice. Although brisket tends to be a tough cut of meat, I can tell the brisket filling at GUEROS is slow cooked because of it's tenderness. The beef is shredded perfectly and falls apart in every bite with a braised like flavor. The fried chicken is cut up in boneless bite size breast meat deep fried lightly golden with crisp breading. The meat is seasoned light but well, however they don't give enough chicken on the nachos. Every order I had would have way more chips than chicken. Maybe it's due to the high demand of the fried chicken in other dishes so they have to stretch out the servings (shrug). The chips are a tad salty so make sure you have a good beverage to wash it down with. Margarita anyone? Lol. The best part of these nachos (and I mean the BEST) are their signature queso blanco and the spicy pico de gallo. Both add a taste which differentiates their nachos from any other I've taste by far. The queso is salty, hot and dripping melted with a touch of habanero kinda spice to it. It is drizzled onto the layer of chips before all other toppings are added and is not recommended to put on directly if you are ordering to go or delivery. Instead request it on the side so your chips can maintain their crunch. The pico de gallo has fresh tomato, cilantro, white onion, and de-seeded jalapeno marinated in vinegar. They give just a dollop to keep the nachos from getting soggy while adding that touch of pico flavor. The tacos are also another popular item with the fried avocado + jalapeno being the top choice. The avocado and jalapeno are fried with light with crisp batter, added is their pickled house slaw on top giving it a tang in taste... Simply delicious. You can not go wrong with each of these popular menu items that make regulars and newbies flock the door. GUEROS Brooklyn was and still is the place to be for great Tex-Mex food in Crown Heights.
