This past Friday, I hosted a birthday dinner at Sonnyboy for a group of 12 and it ended up being the best place I could have chosen for a large party. I had emailed Jatin, the restaurant owner, in advance to organize the large party and he arranged 4 tables next to each other to accommodate the group. That was perfect because we were close enough to all talk, but not trapped at a long table without any ability to get out. Beyond the table, Jatin was incredibly responsive and helpful before the event and was so nice while we were there, making sure we were well taken care of the whole time. Plus he made this paan drink that was absolutely incredible. The service there was excellent in general and everyone was really sweet. As for the food, we ordered all of the small plates to share before people moved on to entrées, and there genuinely wasn't a miss. The Kung Pao cauliflower was my personal favorite. It was crispy, saucy, and that cravable sweet and sour flavor that you get from manchurian. Loved it. The tingly fried chicken lived up to its name: ultra-crispy, juicy, and layered with flavor from the Szechuan pepper, mustard green mayo, and lime that made it feel really bright. I also really loved the shrimp dish and the shishito peppers. I'm gluten free and felt very well taken care of. There were lots of options and the servers and kitchen were really clear with me in terms of cross contamination. Meanwhile, the rest of the group, who are very much not gluten free, could not stop talking about the burrata and fig toast, the marinara meatballs, and several other dishes they ordered. We all left full and happy. I would recommend this to anyone whether you're just getting some friends together or having a larger party. Already thinking about going back here next year. Stopped in on an early weekday evening. I just needed something to eat before meeting a friend nearby. I sat inside at the bar area and the restaurant was empty. They had outdoor seating some people were occupying at the time. I had a glass of wine and the rigatoni. The menu is pretty small, especially if you are a vegan or vegetarian. The rigatoni was good however. My food came out before my glass of wine. Thought it was weird that the bartender was organizing glasses and other back of house things before getting to my glass of wine. I was sitting at the counter so I could see what was going on in the back. Odd way of prioritizing tasks when the restaurant was essentially empty. Prices are average for the area. Service was ok. Great dining spot! It's on the slightly smaller/narrower side, so if you have a large party I definitely recommend reserving ahead of time. We came for dinner and it was very dim/ moody lighting. That evening we went there was only one waiter, but he was super sweet! - Chicken Caesar Salad, (4.5/5): I loved the crunchy croutons bits. The salad itself was refreshing (though the leaves were a little mushy and the chicken was a tad bit dry). Such a hefty portion and I even took home leftovers. - Golden Mash Chicken, (4/5): my friend ordered this. The veggies were roasted perfectly, a the mash was rich and buttery. If you don't read the news, you don't live in NYC, or you live in NYC with your head buried in the concrete, you may not be aware that everything has become unconscionably expensive lately. When it comes to eating and drinking out, there's not much we can do about it, except to find good happy hours. Sonnyboy has a great happy hour. We were wandering around on a sticky day, and saw people eating and drinking at tables in the middle of the street, and that was the energy we wanted. We were pleasantly surprised to find a menu with quality $12 cocktails (shoutout to the Watermalone, exactly the thing to imbibe when you're sweaty), and various delicious things for only $11 like a very solid burger (reminiscent of McDonald's in the best way), an even better fried chicken sandwich, and an absolutely gorgeous and incredible burrata peach toast. If peaches are in season, it's exactly what you need in your life. And they were. I already felt obscenely lucky to have an affordable and tasty meal (with cocktails) in the middle of a Manhattan street, but it was also the night before the Pride Parade, and let me tell you, the people watching was spectacular. Did you know Sonny boy means "a male child" in slang. I didn't. Came here as I stay in LES often, and had no idea about this place. So happy I found it because it's delicious!!! Went here for brunch and was told there was a 30 minute wait. As it turns out, we only had to wait for 10. Outdoor seating is literally in the closed street, so we sat indoors at the bar. As stated on the menu, the Cucumber and Watermelon cocktails were very refreshing, but I can't remember the names at the moment. The food menu and restaurant itself is not the biggest, but it's fine because the food we got was on point. Beware: the lemon ricotta pancake is most definitely shareable between multiple people. I would have loved to give this place 5 stars because the food was super good! I got the smoked salmon Benedict which was very tasty and the salmon was fresh. My husband got the breakfast burrito and loves it. The portions are quite generous. The drinks were also unique and good. I got the Passion Smoke. Coffee was delicious but sat up at the bar for too long and was lukewarm on arrival. This brings me to the problem: service. While everyone was super nice we were insanely rushed. I don't think we were there for longer than 35 minutes, which is ridiculous. We had a reservation and were seated right away. They took our drink order but seemed annoyed that we wanted a starter before entrees came out. They were all rushing around and clearly intimating that they wanted our table turned over. The server actually only took my husband's order and we had to call him back to say that I did in fact want to eat too. No one offered me a 2nd cup of coffee which I wanted since the first was cold, so I asked for it. They seemed anxious about that. Ultimately I was served an Americano instead because the coffee was still brewing and they wanted to get us out. The reservation next to us came in as a 3 top so they sat them without having a seat for the 3rd person because they needed our table. Again, we had not been there for long at all. Perhaps they should have been rushing the 12 top taking up most of the restaurant who were there before and after us. I get that it's busy for brunch but this was out of control. I popped in here last night with a friend after a comedy show at Sesh. The ambiance of the restaurant is great, but the food and service was just okay. They seated us promptly, but when we ordered the waitress seemed pretty scatterbrained and repeated our order to us several times and asked us to point to the items on the menu since she wasn't familiar with it. It was pretty dead in there since it was so late so I didn't know why she seemed so out of it like when a restaurant is packed and the waitresses are super busy. I ordered the Apple Walnut Salad with Chicken and a side of fries. My roommate order the Mussels. We split a bottle of the Lawson's Dry Hills Gewürztraminer. I was disappointed that there weren't any wines by the glass, but was pleasantly surprised when the bill came to find out that all bottles are half priced on Tuesdays! The mussels my friend ordered were very good, but spicier than she expected. The arugula on my salad was a bit wilted from how much dressing they put on the salad and the chicken was so salty I couldn't eat it. The fries were excessively salty too. This is a small, cozy LES restaurant. I was a few minutes early for my reservation, but they sat me right away. To drink, I had the Poolside cocktail. It was pleasantly spicy with a tropical vibe from the curacao. They have happy hour even on Saturdays and the cocktails were only $12. For my main, I had the kale caesar salad and loved it. I rarely order salads when eating out. However, I wanted something light and was not disappointed. It was quite a large salad with a generous topping of reggiano cheese. The bread crumbs provided deliciously buttery texture and the avocado was an added treat. Every bite was satisfyingly crunchy. I was meeting up with a friend that I haven't spent quality time with since probably middle school and couldn't decide where to meet for a late brunch. The food here was good, and the coffee was great! Lots of outdoor tables and some inside as well. However, I wouldn't call this a must-visit spot. We arrived and were given a wait-time, which was accurate and we got a prompt text when our table was ready. Our staff was knowledgeable and on point with service. Unfortunately we were disappointed to find out that the online menu was not updated- prices did not match and a dish that we had chosen the restaurant for, their shakshuka, is no longer served. Bustling, small space with a decent brunch. Came here on a Sunday at around 1 pm. Even though we had no reservations, we were able to be seated right away at the counter. The place stayed pretty busy until we left at around 2:30, with some folks coming in having to wait a little bit (but it never seemed to be overly long). Sitting at the counter is the best, because you get to see all of the dishes coming out! Based on the visuals we were getting from other people's orders, we opted to try: - The ricotta hotcake: very tasty and not too sweet. It's fairly dense, but very satisfying and feels like something you wouldn't be able to make yourself. - Harissa folded eggs: I love a good plating, and the folded eggs looked beautiful. I was in love with my experience at Sonnyboy for brunch and 100% will be adding it to my rotation when hosting family or friends. My friend and I beat the crowd coming at 10:15 on a Saturday (it picked up right around 10:30-11 and got packed! And they opened up street seating to accommodate more tables). The servers were incredibly friendly-- we loved Sam A who was bubbly and fun and attentive :) Our drinks were lovely, including some fabulous espresso in my americano, a Coca Cola on ice with a lemon (a la italiana) and a glass of champagne, or "mimosa lite" ;) Our food came before I even took my first sip of coffee, which I would say the next time I would pace the food to come out slower. I am happy however we got our order in before the crowd because I'm not sure how long we would've waited -- everything came out super fast. Nonetheless, the food was a beautiful spread. I'll be dreaming of the harissa eggs for weekends to come.... The texture of the crunchy thick slice of sourdough was contrasted by smooth lightly spiced eggs and fatty salmon. I was delightfully thrown off by the crispy lettuce and fennel and some random yet tasty accoutrements, but it all worked harmoniously! Fabulous and a meal that will keep you full from brunch til dinner. My friend said the breakfast burrito was also fantastic, if they did a version meatless or without cheese I'd consider for the next time. This is the type of place I may or may not try new things (like the gorgeous avo toast or a sandwich), but I may have already found their menu gem. My only criticism is the eggs and toast were on the slightly greasier side -- I'd like to try the toast dry next time since there is already a lot of fat on the plate. We didn't have a reservation, but the hostess was lovely and helped us get seated within 10-15 minutes. We sat inside at one of the tables. It's a small space, but cozy. We ordered the Hotcake, Shoestring Fries, and Breakfast Burrito to share. The hotcake was good and unique. It was thick and fluffy, and the berry compote on top was the right amount of sweetness. Sonnyboy is a great brunch spot probably serving the best folded/scrambled eggs I've had in a while. This is the perfect pick me up kind of brunch that everyone needs everyday! Some of our favorites were: 1. The Harissa Folded eggs- best! 2. Smashed Avo toast, get this with the scrambled eggs. The dukkah and zataar flavors were great enhancements. 3. I was recently visiting New York and was looking for a brunch spot that would cater to vegans and others and I stumbled upon Sonnybon. The vegan crab cake drew my attention--especially because it is made with lion's mane mushroom. It was DELICIOUS to say the least!! I think this is one of my favorite meals I've ever had. It was so filling but I also never wanted it to end. Each bite was a symphony of savory goodness, with a crispy exterior giving way to a moist and flavorful interior. The space was super Small. Food was so so. Not worth the trip In my opinion. We called in advance to make reservations. They told us no reservations needed...then when we got there they insisted we needed reservations...SMDH. SO ANNOYING read more
