But you absolutely positively want to avoid the two restaurants on the side. The kolaches and baked goods at Nonnie's Bakery are nearly inedible. Given my bad experiences with Nonnie's, I studiously avoided having anything to do with Papa G's. * * * Well, circumstances are circumstances, And for reasons that would come out of a hackneyed situation comedy script, I absolutely positively was stuck taking a dinner at Papa G's. My earlier instincts had been 100% on target. As they say, "The Truth Comes Out in the Wash." * * * I had a small but perfectly acceptable chicken fried steak. The toast that came with it was fine. The price was eminently reasonable. The lady behind the counter was nice. The deal ruiner? The Tater Tots. Looking around at the other tables, I saw the French Fries were exactly the same way. They serve a lot of Tater tots and French Fries at Papa G's. The potato products are Way way way overcooked in the fryer, They are greasy. They taste burnt and unpleasant. I was hungry and this was the only food I was going to get in a while, So I tried to make a go of it. I should have left every Tater Tot except the first one on my plate. * * * Now to be fair, Truckers LOVE The Rocking G. There are a lot of trucks parked in the back and the truckers hang out throughout the complex. The food is inexpensive, and the gas may be inexpensive too. They have good showers, and the physical building is nice. I did NOT have the burgers. Since my chicken fried steak was okay, the burgers may be okay. * * * But given the rough time I was having keeping the meal I had from a) coming up the wrong direction earlier in the evening, or b) departing my system in an disorderly way the next day, I am not that eager to give the burgers a turn at bat.

The best jalapeno cheese burger in the Universe…read more They get VERY busy at times, so be patient. The service here I have always felt in a scale of 1-10 is a 9 or 10. Pro tip : Call ahead for the burger, it's ready in 20 to 25 minutes. If there is a line to order / pay, stand to the left of the line for pay/ pickup. I don't believe it is marked as such ? Ambiance is not fancy, but clean.

NEWSFLASH.....THIS JUST IN ..LOCAL COUPLE HAS SUBPAR MEAL AT THE DAIRYBAR…read more Yep, that's right! My wife and I had a surprisingly bad meal at the dairy bar. We thought about using the drive-through but that line was extremely long with oversized trucks and SUVs and such so we decided to park and walk in ; the dining area was surprisingly not busy. Maybe three tables were occupied; we were able to order immediately. I ordered a cheeseburger with onion rings and a Sprite and my wife ordered a cheeseburger french fries and an unsweet tea with extra ice. Although the kitchen was preparing food for all the vehicles outside, we received our food in less than 10 minutes . I noticed my burger tasted a bit odd because the pickles and lettuce were quite chilled, and yet the beef patty seemed lukewarm at best and it did not even attempt to melt the cheese that had been placed upon it; same situation for my wife's hamburger. The cheese just sat there on the hamburger patty, not budging, not melting not getting gooey just sitting there. While her french fry order was hot and fresh, my onion ring order was rather lukewarm and crispy and yet also somewhat rubbery. Kind of weird for a fried product unless it had been fried and then possibly reheated in the microwave and served to me. It became obvious to both of us that the kitchen staff had simply pre-cooked some hamburger patties and set them aside and plopped them on hamburger buns and then they added the chilled mustard, lettuce, onions, and pickles. I hope that someone from the restaurant actually reads this review because across the highway I'd be willing to bet that there are several eating establishments that are about to go in providing us with more dining options.

I usually call in our order when we are about 20 minutes away from our stop. Everytime I call in the order the person on the other end is friendly and repeats back what we order. The convenient store part of Hruska's has a lot of items that you can choose from to purchase and they have clean bathrooms which is a positive. When we get there we park, walk in and head to pick up our food at the counter. It's usually labeled with the ticket stapled to the bag. We then get in line to pay for our food. The line is usually backed up but moves fairly quickly. There is also a small area with tables and chairs that you can sit at and enjoy your meal or sit there if you need a rest. For my meal I usually order a Hamburger which comes with lettuce, tomato, pickles, and onions. I usually get mine with mustard. Their burgers are so good and a good size. Overall Hruska's is a great stopping place while traveling. Whether it's for gas, a bathroom break, or if you want to grab something to eat this is a one stop shop place.

Arguably one of the greatest foods ever invented. Atleast in my world. How can you go wrong with bread filled with sweet or savory fillings? Hruska's is about halfway between Houston and Austin and a perfect rest stop to fill up on gas, use the clean facilities, grab a snack or indulge in their amazing baked goods. They are steeped in history and have been around for decades passing along the family recipes. It's obviously improved structurally over the years from a country store and looks like a modern gas station now. It's always pretty busy every time I have stopped in, but they are a well oiled machine and keep the masses moving with excellent customer service. They have all your gas station essentials like snacks and beverages. What sets them apart is their bakery. Here, they label their kolaches as the traditional fruit filled variety. I like them, but they are never my first choice. I love the ones with meat inside. Here, they label these as pigs in a blanket. They have a large variety of both. I usually go for a regular sausage and cheese, but over here, they sell a delicious pan sausage kind. On top of all their sweet and savory baked goods, they also sell burgers on the grill. Their burgers have made it to the Texas Monthly Top 50 burger spots. I have yet to try it. Overall, this is an always stop place for me. I highly recommend stopping here to stretch your legs and enjoy a delicious pastry while you're at it. I will definitely be back.
