I got married and had Sonar Salon and Kristan Humphrey do hair & make up for my mother, 4 bridesmaids, and myself. I regret this decision and I warn other brides to find another salon. I just got my wedding photos back and although my bridesmaids hair looks acceptable, my entire wedding album is practically ruined by my hair. It honestly looks dirty, looks ratty, and looks NOTHING like the pictures I gave her to mimic for my wedding or bridal shoots. I am shocked at how bad my hair looks. I am including pictures so everyone can understand. The iconic pictures of first kiss, first dance, the ceremony... all are tarnished by my bad hair and I am so very disappointed I used Sonar Salon...this mistake will be lasting memory in ALL my pictures. From the front my hair looked ok, even though my part was a bit of a wreck...I mistakenly thought on the day of my wedding that I looked beautiful and my hair was perfect and ALL my pictures would be all that I hoped for..... BUT I WAS WRONG. EVERY picture of the side of my hair or back of my hair is nightmare.... I mean it looks horrific, and I don't mean at the end of the wedding, side shots of me at the ceremony are just really really bad. read more

Sonar Beauty was wonderful to work with! They did hair and makeup for myself (the bride), as well as all 5 of my bridesmaids. We received so many compliments on the hair and make-up. I felt beautiful, and they really listened to what I was looking for. The team at Sonar Beauty was even able to work with me when I had a change of heart for my look. They were able to execute flawlessly and create the look I had exactly in mind. I am so thankful that I was able to work with them on my wedding day. I highly recommend Sonar Beauty to any bride. read more

Kristan was incredible to work with! This was a destination wedding, so I went to Sonar for a trial just a few days before the big day. Although I was having Kristan do only my hair on the actual day, on the day of the trial she did both my hair and makeup because I was having super-late-in-the-game engagement photos taken afterwards. She did such an amazing job! She was also super sweet and friendly, didn't seem put off at all by my awkward shyness like some people tend to be. :) On the morning of my wedding, she did my hair, my maid of honor's hair, as well as the hair of three other family members and a friend. I could not believe how fast she worked and with such amazing results on every one of us. She somehow made my just above shoulder length hair seem way more abundant than it actually is. AND it was still perfect by the time all of the festivities ended around 3am! Another thing, the salon was just the perfect atmosphere and vibe to start off my perfect day. It is super cute, especially the back room which Kristan so graciously allowed my makeup artist friend to take over that morning. She even offered us a bottle of bubbly she had in her fridge - exactly the thing I needed to ease my anxiety of being the center of attention for the day, ha! :) So yeah, I highly, highly recommend Kristan for your hair and makeup needs. I wish I lived anywhere near Austin so I could go to her regularly! read more

I absolutely LOVE my hair! Kristen re-did an ombre I had done months before at another salon. The blonde is bright, the color flows evenly and the tone is perfect. My hair is naturally dark but Kristen really did magic on my hair to get the color exactly the way I wanted and extremely close to the picture I showed her. I will definitely be going back for touch ups and a cut. Btw....The salon is super cute and love the decor. Kristen was very sweet and really listened to what i wanted.. Sonar Beauty was a solid pick. I was a little nervous at first, because I had a hard time getting anyone to respond to me when I first sent initial inquiries, but after the contract was signed I never got anything less than professional and courteous attention. I did the package of hair trial, bridal hair, and airbrush makeup, and from the first minute of my hair trial Kristan made me feel welcome and comfortable in her adorable vintage South Congress studio. She also whipped up an amazing do for my hair (and decided AGAINST using jeweled pins for my hair, which she could have charged me extra for, but decided they didn't look right with the image we were going for). She looked at photos of my dress, and the venue, listened carefully when I described what level of elegance I was looking for, and took what I said to heart. My hair looked glorious. On the day of, she and Rachel were right on time, and were cheerfully flexible about the rather small workspace of my doll-sized bridal suite. I had specifically asked for stylists that could handle African American hair, since all three of my bridesmaids had some, and they were both competent at handling such hair and making it look great. They also interviewed my MOH and bridesmaids on the day of as they were getting started, asking what styles they wanted, and really listening and adhering to their preferences as best they could. Sonar wound up doing our hair, and airbrush makeup, AND false lashes for me, AND covering a small tattoo on my arm, and they were still done in under three hours! Both Kristan and Rachel's hands moved like they could do this in their sleep (probably could), and carried on effortless conversations with my bridal party, never needing to backtrack or do over anything. They had to travel quite a ways to get there, haul their massive kits up a flight of narrow stairs, and then go to work in a room with hardly any space, but you'd never know it from their upbeat attitude. Really made the afternoon pleasant and reduced what stress a bride would normally be enduring on that day. Plus, I looked great at the end. read more

Nope! Okay y'all! Don't do it! Worst annoying experience ever. I had the owner Kristen try to do my hair and I brought in my own take in extensions in and she left most of the blond out then made me buy another pack of Brown. Craziness! She calls todsy and says they hair they are not in supposedly on brown back order but I'm supposed to go tomorrow and dye my roots to blend it and go back again for tape more brown hair another day & 100$ hourly rate. Brown hair never on back order. She does not know ho layer hair just chop it off. Do not go there you will get taken advantage of and be juiced for money to keep going bsck. FYI. Color sucks. She left it all over and Burnt Scalp and ears. Now I'm Stuck w clip ins to cover her bad blending. Her greedy. She's nuts hope you enjoy the free 200$ for brown pack I never got! read more

Kristan was the absolute best!! She arrived on time, got everyone done quickly and we all looked amazing! My bridal party didn't even have pictures for her to go off of. She just made it up all on the spot! Before the wedding day, I was really worried about the timeline and if she will have enough time but it all went fantastic! She told me not to worry too much and that she got it and yes she did! I'm so happy that we had her there to make our wedding day even better! Definitely recommend! :) read more

Hanna saved this new mommas ratty hair! Since having my first child and wearing my hair up for 3 months I knew I needed a new do before I returned to work. I found her on Groupon and gave her a call needing to get in asap as I procrastinated getting my hair done. Had a wonderful experience with Kristan and her team on my wedding day. She & one other girl came out- they were on time, professional, sweet, and made everyone's hair look excellent. Kristan practically saved my life over a year ago. One bad day in October, I decided to cut my own blunt bangs, so I came to her under extraordinarily dire circumstances. I had been to a half dozen great stylists at great Austin salons over the years, but I was really looking for someone I could trust over my own judgement and organic products (I always ended up drifting away and picking up the scissors or box of color to experiment.) Although reviews usually are how I find services, I chose Kristan, because based on her photos she clearly has a pulse on what is beautiful and sexy. Maybe shallow, but it worked: Kristan saved my hair that day and somehow every time it looks better than before. She is charming, artistic, hard working and highly trained. And she uses the best products around (natural, charmingly packaged and from Italy!) I trust her judgement to make me look naturally beautiful and most like myself. And that is how Kristan found me. Note: my profile photo shows hair from a long Colorado camping trip when I went feral and lost a hair elastic in a canyon. This is right before she saved my hair the second time with a keratin treatment. read more

Kristan is an absolute hair color and cut goddess! I got her expertise recommended to me from not just 1, but two of my friends months ago that told me about how great she was and had been meaning to head in to Sonar Beauty for some time (overly grown out ombre = not the cutest). She was extremely welcoming and sweet, as well as hilarious and honest with me. She listened to my blonde-haired dreams and gave me the approach of full highlights or an all-over color and we decided on lots of foils and a cut, keeping my length while going blonder. She was so patient (and professional!) with my long lions-mane major hair, and you can see straight away that she is really passionate about what she does, her products, and making sure you absolutely LOVE how you look when you leave. If you've ever had a stylist cut your hair without chatter or questions or making sure you're comfortable, you know how frustrating that can be, but Kristan 'checks in' the whole time in between awesome conversation (about Beyonce, Austin's best happy hours, and our hilarious experiences with the Whole30 diet), making sure you love your length and what's happening to your locks! She actually teaches classes on coloring, so her expertise reputation is well-deserved and she will happily explain all sorts of color care, knowledge and steps to inquiring minds (like mine). Plus, homegirl got my hair so much brighter and blonder damage-free while keeping my length (!!!) which truly rules and is nearly unheard of for us blonde addicts. Seriously- go ahead and book with Sonar Beauty, and see the adorable little styling nook for yourself- but make sure you make plans for after your appointment, because you're definitely going to want to show off how amazing your hair looks. read more

My heart is heavy when writing this review because generally the people were really sweet. Although,I can't help in being cheated of my group on and disappointed in the results for balayage. I visited Elena Evans who mentioned nothing prior to the group on (for balayage and a hair trim) that I would need to get it toned. I showed her a picture of the look I wanted and she quickly proceeded dying my hair. She avoided dying the bottom half and focused on the crown of my head, so I ended up like this: (refer to pictures below). Also, instead of the roots being dark and the bottom lighter it was reversed :( I left the salon trying to convince myself that I liked it. When I arrived home I noticed that it was not a blended look at all and probably something I could have done at home. I texted her about my dissatisfaction and she told me that she was sorry I wasn't happy and maybe I would like it better if it was toned (which was $30). I was unwilling to spend more money there after not having a good experience so I bought box die and tried to undo all the damage. Moral of the story: If you have a groupon for this place ask about extra services because she didn't tell me at first and be specific with the balayage look you want. I wish I could have gotten compensated or been serviced for this extreme look. The balayage look I received was nothing as they advertised" meaning to sweep or to paint. It allows for a sun-kissed natural looking hair color. Get softer, less noticeable regrowth lines, and bolder pops of color. The principal idea being less is more when creating soft, natural looks." read more

So I'll start by saying I am very particular about my hair. Very, very few people have gotten it right. That might be why I forget/wait so long to get it done. That is also why I waited a week to post this review. Everyone knows a stylist can make your hair look good, but the real test is the next few days when you have to wash and style it yourself. I met Kristan through a girl friend of mine and unbeknownst to me, my boyfriend had gone to her a couple times for a haircut. I commented on how good his hair looked after his most recent cut and he said "yes, Kristan did a good job." Seeing what she did with him and my friend, I scheduled an appointment. When the day came, I arrived at her studio and she sat me down and asked what I was looking for. I already had some ombre that had grown out too much so I was in for more color and a cut. I love love love volume (the bigger the hair, the closer to God), so I requested as many layers as she could do without it looking disconnected or choppy. She asked me some specific questions and we went through pictures on her iPad. Once it seemed like we were on the same page, she started the process. A little over two hours later I was done. By then it was around 8:30 pm and though I thought it looked good, I waited to get my hopes up as I wanted to see it in natural light. As I mentioned previously, I am very critical when it comes to my hair. I paid Kristan and went on my merry way. When I got home, my boyfriend commented that my hair looked good but he knew of my appointment so I thought he was just doing his duty and being a good boyfriend. Over the next couple days, I realized that Kristan HAD done a great job with both the color and cut. The cherry on top was that not only did my bf compliment my hair the day of my appt, but he also said how good it looked two days later after I had blow dried and fixed it myself. Kudos Kristan!! Highly recommend this girl!! She knows what she's doing and has 10 years of experience behind her. Note, she uses both organic and non-organic color. And whatever line of products she uses smells heavenly, esp. the leave-in conditioner! read more

I've seen Kristan only twice now, but I highly recommend her for her high level of expertise in both cut and color. On my first appointment with Kristan, she successfully highlighted out 2 years worth of henna which had become dark on my hair, without damage mind you. Not only that, but she fixed a bad cut from another stylist I'd seen just 2 wks prior (someone whom I'd seen numerous times, mind you). On my second visit, Kristan made recommendations for my color that she felt would help with my skin tone, and keep the gnarly premature gray under wraps. She gave me a beautiful combination of reds and blondes using her TOP NOTCH organic color by Milkshake from Italy. I haven't been this pleased with my hair in a while.... if you're struggling with getting it right with your hair cut or color, I recommend booking an appt with Kristan. Her true expertise and friendly vibe is a rare find. read more

Kristan is great! After working with her for the makeup for my bridal party and myself at my wedding I thought I would give her salon a try. I came in knowing I wanted some kind of hair color, but had I had never colored my hair before so I needed some advice! Kristan was incredibly helpful, and she helped me get some super fun highlights. She also recommended some great hair products that are far superior to my usual grocery-store generic brand shampoo and conditioner. The pricing is very competitive to other Austin-area salons, and Kristan is both friendlier and has more experience than many other stylists that I have tried in the area. I will definitely be going back! read more

Seriously, one of the best colorist in Austin. I am lucky to have found her and will send anyone her way.

Kristan is amazing! She is so sweet and really invested making you look your best. I've gone to kristan for hair cuts, makeup, updo's, and highlights. Every time I have been beyond satisfied. Additionally, kristans prices are very reasonable and she makes the experience super enjoyable. Definitely recommend Kristan over any other stylist in austin. read more

This is a difficult review to write because I liked the owner cuz shes scrappy and a smart business gal. I like to support strong women. But this isn't a personal review, it's about the work and on an important day like a wedding you want perfection. I am the grooms mom, and the officiant. I wanted to look as stunning as a 60 year old woman can. I had hair and make up for myself, and makeup for my daughter. To be fair, I told her I wanted a more natural look, hearing stories about wedding make up. I haven't had a makeover since I was a young woman, so I was excited to learn how to apply on older skin. Well I won't do what she did. Cake makeup, dry looking and pasty. Sad thing is,,,maybe that was just my face, but I thought makeup was supposed to fix that. I dont think she applied any shadow, didn't look like she did, and she barely applied mascara until I kept prompting for more until it finally occurred to to suggest false lashes. Um, yes maam. But for some bizarre reason she didn't put many to the inside which made my eyes look weird. Then some were clumped together like globs. She did the same to my daughter and a clump fell on her cheek later. Sloppy, too fast work. She seemed to be annoyed, applied make up very brusquely, to the point that both my daughter and I laughed later about being bruised. In the end, I hated my make up, and suggest to you to do what everyone says...do your own, or get a trial first, or go to someone different. Elena did my hair, which I was also very disappointed in, however, that wasnt her fault. She was very sweet, reworked it a few times to try to please me, I just didn't know what I wanted but if I had known, she probably could have made it happen. So here is the stunning part. 2 make ups. 1 hairdo. $300!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not in the wedding biz so maybe that's just par, but holy schmolie!!! The bride was in the house, so I paid my share with a smile and a tip, but. YIKES! As an aside. The brides make up was absolutely gorgeous. So I dont know if she just spent more time and worked harder on the bride, but my daughter is also gorgeous and could have done her own make up better. And even though the day is about the bride, I was also a paying customer and deserved the best. Maybe the tip for the salon is...remember that everyone in the bridal party wants to look gorgeous, slow down and get it right. read more

I have naturally (very) curly hair and even when I go to expensive salons, it is hard to find someone who knows how to properly blow it out straight while leaving some body in it. Kristan is the best I've seen-- fast, friendly, and reasonably priced! Kristan also puts into my hair an organic (formaldehyde-free etc) relaxer periodically, and while it doesn't straighten the hair, I love that it takes the frizz out (especially bad on humid days) and doesn't have the harsh chemicals the other ones do. You won't regret going to Kristan-- she's an excellent stylist. read more

I've been waiting a long time to write this review. I made an appointment with Kristan a few months ago for all over color and cut, I had read all the reviews and was excited. I hadn't gotten my hair professionally done in over a year before going in and my overall goal was to make my hair look and feel healthy again. I first verified that my late afternoon appt time would be long enough to color and cut my hair, Kristan texted me back saying it would be. I showed up 15 minutes early, 5 minutes after my appointment time Kristan walked in and straight past me asking "are you ready?". I sat down and told her to cut off what looked unhealthy so she did just that, took the scissors, bunched my hair up and hacked the bottom few inches of my hair off, i'd never had that done before. She then started dying my hair by slapping the color brush onto my head, seriously plastic hitting my head. She also had really long plastic nails that would stab my head, face and ears, not relaxing at all. She then left my dye to process and got started on someone else's hair cut. Ten minutes go by...twenty....thirty and i'm getting anxious. She finally walks back to grab something and sees me sitting there still so she rushes me to the sink to rinse my color and then LEAVES ME WITH SOAKING HAIR IN THE SINK TO GO FINISH THE OTHER HAIRCUT. NEVER had I ever been left in the sink with nothing but a washcloth protecting my clothes. Sat there for probably 20 minutes, my phone died, I was pissed, and I could hear her talking about how she was going to be late to a concert and how she wasn't going to have time to get ready. She finally gets back to me, washes my hair and gets me in the chair to cut. She cut my hair so fast and didn't even dry it all the way, she put all of her stuff down and started walking to the front before I could even really notice anything was wrong. She checks me out and starts talking about how she took this amount off of whatever and how she didn't charge me for whatever else, I was upset and I'm not a confrontational person so I just went with it. I got home and noticed that the color was fine, my hair only turns one color, but I asked for long layers, instead I got uneven chunks, my hair was so uneven, when pulled over my shoulders there was a noticeable difference in length. I literally wore my hair in a ponytail for months until I could afford to go get my hair done by my usual stylist in San Marcos, she even commented on how uneven the cut was. I waited to write this review because Sonar was doing my best friends hair/makeup for her wedding and wanted the full experience before being too tough on the whole salon. I got my hair done by Elena and she was amazing, so gentle and sweet but also quick, I got my make up done by Brooke and felt gorgeous for the first time in forever. Completely different experience than I had in the salon with Kristan. This is just my experience, personally I will not be returning to Sonar but was please with my wedding look. read more
