Well, it's difficult to write this review because my previous experiences at Roar were so positive. However, today's appointment was very different. First, the stylist was very busy, so I waited almost a month to see her. Finally, when the appointment day finally arrived, I made sure to be there 10 minutes early and checked in electronically for my haircut. When I arrived, the stylist was busy with another client and didn't acknowledge me. She finished 15 minutes after my appointment was to have begun. After finishing with her client, she walked around the salon for a bit then approached me and asked my name. When I told her my name, she said, "I don't know what the problem is, but I don't have an appointment with you." I showed her my confirmed appointment on the StyleSeat app. At that point, I noticed that the appointment had been cancelled. I did not cancel it. She told me that they were "moving to a new scheduling app". The stylist told me that she was booked until 4 pm, so she couldn't cut my hair. She said she would send a note to the other stylists at Roar, to see if anyone was available to cut my hair. She then told me she was "going to a friend's house for a bit" and "would be back in a while". She left the salon and locked the door behind her. No one but me and one other client were left there, waiting alone. After waiting a few minutes for the stylist to return, I finally decided to leave. It was then that I discovered the door was locked and I couldn't get out. I tried the small locking mechanism several times but it appeared to be stuck. I spent another several minutes trying to get out of the locked door. I was very frustrated to be locked into the salon. Finally, it gave way and I was able to leave. If someone had just called me in advance to let me know they needed to cancel my appointment, then I could have chosen a different appointment on a different day and/or time. And if someone had not locked me in the salon, I could have left when the stylist left. This was a very unpleasant experience at Roar, from the lack of a welcome, to someone cancelling my appointment without notifying me, to the unconcerned manner in which I was left in a locked salon. I felt terrible. This is no way to treat a customer. read more

I got my (long, thick, straight) hair cut by Julieanne and was there for about an hour or so. She tried her best I think, but she did not cut my hair the way I asked her to and the style came out really bad. I showed her an easy reference picture with simple layering and my hair looks nothing like that. I specifically said no chopped ends and my ends are extremely choppy. Really disappointed... and I tipped her when she already charges $120 for a haircut which is expensive. I will not be returning. read more

I was really looking for a stylist that would take the time to listen to my interests and concerns so that communication would be easy for us both and she has made such a great impression on me from the start. While my appointment isn't until June, because she is booked solid(!!!), she immediately made time to take a consult and explore many avenues that I had been interested in learning about. My pre-appointment consultation was extremely informative and I did not feel pressured to book extensions and commit to anything unless I was ready. Sarah is educated, upfront, experienced, kind, warm, and genuinely wanted to help me with my hair. Sarah Moss is amaaaaazing!!! For myriad reasons this girly girl hadn't had her hair touched by a professional in well over a year. Cancer/chemo hair loss, a lost pregnancy, and other reasons contributed to the desperate state of my locks. Sarah greeted me immediately upon arrival and offered me a beverage, then proceeded to analyze my hair with her trained eye. She saw my vision of piecey layers but I needed her expertise with the color--I was going to leave it completely up to her. I have never, EVER marveled at my own hair color (I have gotten my hair colored in a salon religiously since college--20 years now--with the exception of the last year+) but she nailed it. She looked at my grown-out roots and skin tone then asked if I was okay just letting her do her thing. What I have now is a gorgeous warm chocolatey brown with a touch of red and gold. How she managed to add dimension in a one-step color process is beyond me, but she simultaneously brought out my hazel eyes and complemented my face shape while maintaining my natural summer highlights. She also gives THE BEST scalp massages In her shampoo. I had gotten to the point of almost dreading having my hair done in my former city with my former stylist--long and slow appointments, cold and industrial environment (going for a trendy, avant gard vibe, I suppose), lacking in basic customer service from the staff and overall experience as a whole, stylists chatting among themselves....we've all been there. Not only is my hair amazing, but the entire experience was a forgotten joy. It had been a while since I had allowed myself to be totally pampered. I almost fell asleep several times ("that's okay! you're not the first and you won't be the last," Sarah said) and she appropriately conversed/let me doze, taking my lead during the 3 1/2 hours I was there. Is there anything worse during hair appointment than having to entertain your stylist? The ambiance is soothing, the entire staff is friendly, parking was a breeze (street parking at just $1.20/hour) and I left relaxed and happy. Can't ask for more. Ok, so I went a really really long time without getting a hair cut before I moved to Austin, and the reason is that I have a hard time trusting anyone with my hair. I tried out a few different stylists but was unhappy or felt a little robbed once it was over and done with. ROAR is the place to go. I have going to see Jessica for my haircuts and colors for over a year now, and she never disappoints me. She knows I'm very particular with my hair, but it always comes out amazing. I'm kind of at the point where I'm like "do literally whatever you want to my hair"- I trust her that much. She's also amazing at men's cuts. My husband had also been going to her for haircuts for the last year, and we are sending all of our friends to her as well. I'll sing her praises forever, seriously! The salon is cute, chic and very clean. The hair washing sinks are actually comfortable to tilt your head back into (which I love). And I like the music they play! The parking situation kind of sucks, especially later in the day. Street parking only but I usually find a spot somewhere fairly close, so no big deal. I'm definitely not going anywhere else for my hair- this place is worth the trip to Rainey Street for sure, and then you can go out afterwards:) read more

I would give the salon 4 stars but stylist 3. Typically I can get a braid done (on clean hair) for $10 at DryBar or under $30 elsewhere (Four Seasons). But - being desperate with the heat visiting in Austin, I was squeezed in with Panda. We arrived on time and rushed to the appointment, just to wait 30+ minutes. And then was told by Panda that her fee for anything started at $80. To be honest, she was good, but if I lived in Austin, I wouldn't come back. That's flagrantly overpriced and I live in DC. I've been coming to Roar for a couple years now. I love the laid back vibe of the salon. It's such a great location at the end of Rainey. Quiet enough to forget you're on Rainey, but close enough to walk and grab a bite to eat or a drink! *I do wish there was still a receptionist to greet me and offer me coffee or water like they're used to be, but that's neither here nor there! I met Juan while he was working at another salon in Austin and I not only followed him to Roar, but I drive in from Houston every 5 - 6 weeks to get my platinum blonde retouched with him. Juan is the best colorist that has ever worked on my hair. I am a natural dark brunette with a ton of hair. I always feel hesitation from other colorists when they're debating bleaching me and working with me. I haven't found anyone who was as willing and ready to work on me as Juan was. He is willing to go the extra mile and take the extra time necessary to achieve the most optimum results. My best friend cut my hair for a bazillion years until she betrayed our friendship by moving across the country to Portland, leaving me alone in a city of mediocre hair stylists. For months, I roamed from salon to salon getting no-so-great haircuts that ranged from weird fashion mullets to bangs that should have been straight, but slanted across from one side to the other (NOT CUTE). I was lost...bemused...betrayed...bewildered... And then I met Matthew and my world changed for the better. Matthew makes each individual strand of my hair feel appreciated and beautiful, which is pretty hard since hair is technically dead. Its a delicate dance, and he does it well. Now my hair is alive and full of life. I'm convinced that I have the best hairstyle that exists. And hey, if you feel beautiful, who cares what anyone else says? But that's just the thing. PEOPLE DO CARE. Every day I'm approached by someone who compliments my hair. Does it feel good? You bet your ass it does. So I'll keep going back. Mama's gotta look good. Briana does my color, which is a beautiful ombre style that fades from dark brown to blonde on the tips. She's young, but don't let that fool you. Got my hair cut yesterday by Jenni at Roar Roar. She did an incredible job! It's the first time I've ever had a complete dry cut and I don't think I'll ever be able to go back. She listened exactly to what I was looking for, but I also told her to inject her own style into it. Before she made any changes to the overall shape/style, she explained what she was planning on doing and what the benefits were of that particular technique, and made sure I was okay with that before going forward. Plus, she is super sweet and a great conversationalist. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is because of the price, which is steep for Austin (but I told myself, well this haircut in NYC would be $150-$200 so it's actually a great deal!) read more

I went to Roar for Wendy to do my color and went ahead and got my hair cut there a couple of times too (by someone other than Wendy). FYI - If you're looking for Wendy, she no longer works at Roar - find her at Bollecine Spa now. While I do love the cut I got there, I feel a little dirty about how much I paid for it. Seriously, I won't even tell you how expensive it was because I'm totally embarrassed about it. And this may seem trivial, but their chairs don't have a place to rest your feet. Being short, that makes it uncomfortable. So, yes, an awesome haircut no doubt, but a great cut isn't worth that kind of money to me. I love Roar the salon, it has this sort of old world glam feel to it. I love Rory McNeil, the owner of Roar. Rory is dynamic and charismatic and is pure joy to visit with ...but...yesterday, I had my hair cut and coloured for the first time at Roar and I have to say that Im more than just a little disappointed. My hair colour is sort of this flat looking medium blond and is WAY too dark and not at all flattering to me. The cut? Sheesh what can I say? Lauren is a sweet girl, but my hair is incredibly short and not at all what I asked for. To be fair, I had some damage from the last hair cut and colour but I wasnt expecting to loose 4 inches of hair to a cut I didnt ask for. At $275.00 for the cut and colour, I was expecting to look and feel like a million bucks when I left the salon. I didn't. I guess it's back to the drawing board in my never ending search for a true hair artisan that delivers.....just as soon as my hair grows back out. Ugh!! read more

Well, I was one of those skeptical girls who never wanted to try a new salon after moving away for college, but little did I know that my attitude would quickly change after being introduced to Roar! If you want to leave a salon feeling like a rockstar, (even while feeling like crap and super hungover and getting less than 4 hours of sleep), you have GOT to go to Roar. I'll admit that I wouldn't have gone here on my own especially because of the price, but I was pushed by a friend and glad I went. As I might have alluded to, I was incredibly hungover, and happily surprised at the offer of a mimosa when I arrived by the sweet girl at the front desk (I suck at names). After chatting about my cut, changing into a smock and trip to the wash bowl, I was sitting in Matthew's chair, entertained by a tiny and cute shop puppy and lovely conversation. Matthew is AMAZING. Not only is he easy on the eyes and super sweet, but he also cleaned up my outgrown 'do and made me feel BEAUTIFUL. I honestly will pay more for a salon that I leave looking and FEELING great. I had a color consultation with Helene afterward (it's my fault I schedule it like that but I always wait until the last minute to schedule hair appointments) and after chatting, we decided I could wait another week or two to get my color done (because we didn't want to ruin what Matthew had just done!). I went to ROAR Salon recently and Erica Rae gave me the best cut I've had in Austin. I had been seeing the same stylist in LA for over 10 years prior to moving to Austin. I have very thick, curly blonde hair and it takes a real expert to cut it correctly. I prefer a dry cut to see where my curls will lay and many stylists I've seen will only cut it wet. Erica is an expert on cutting curls dry. She was able to balance out my cut and remove a lot of excess weight on one side . She kept the volume and the layers were perfect for showing off my curls without being too "Big and poufy". Can't wait to go back to see her in 6 weeks! She is also a funny, charismatic and great person to chat with for an hour...Highly recommend! read more

I'd come to an appointment and describe the look I had in mind, and she always knew how to make it happen while tailoring it to my specific hair type and my lifestyle. Roar is a sweet salon in a very convenient part of town. When you're done, you can take your fresh hairdo bar hopping on Rainey. My stylist is Juan. He's a lovely person. I adore him. And, as a stylist, I trust him with cutting my curly hair which is no small feat. Occasionally, we throw some color around to freshen things up. Red is tricky for hair. I wasn't even sure of the shade I wanted. Helene got it just right the very first time! You wouldn't believe all the compliments I get now on my "natural red hair." Roar is adorable! I had my hair cut by Lauren Dewalt, who was super professional and really sweet too. I was a little iffy if I wanted to change up my look drastically or not, but Lauren took my few cues and really ran with it and I am so happy with the result.
