I initially discovered this business while contemplating on cutting off my long locks. I called at first to ask about consulting, as I hadn't visited a barber in 6-7 years. Kit picked up the phone and answered all of my questions, and reducing a lot of the anxiety I had. I booked my appointment online, showed up, and the rest is history. Kit is amazing, not only a talented barber, but a wonderful human being. Throughout my cut, we shared anecdotes, experiences, and by the time I left, felt like I was talking to an old friend. The cut was exactly what I wanted (and I didn't even really know what I wanted when I came in, but Kit made it easy after consulting)! I left with a new established sense of confidence, especially after dropping what felt like 10lbs of hair. This business is everything I've looked for in a barbershop, the people, the vibe, the cuts. One of the worst haircuts I've ever had. I paid $80 (which is already insanely overpriced) for a rushed, careless job. I explained multiple times exactly what I wanted, but he completely ignored me and did his own thing. It felt like he was just trying to get me out of the chair as fast as possible. The result? Uneven, sloppy, and nothing like what I asked for. I left feeling frustrated and ripped off. For that kind of money, you expect someone to listen, take their time, and deliver - none of which happened here. If you value your hair, your time, and your wallet, go literally anywhere else. FINALLY! The hunt for a new barber is over. I moved to Austin about six months ago, back in August, and I've dreaded the process of finding a barber ever since. Naturally, while looking for a place I could trust, I turned to Yelp reviews. Maybe it's a bad habit, but I tend to scroll to the lowest reviews first, ultimately scaring myself away from trusting the positive ones. While exploring Yelp, I stumbled upon Scruff's Barbershop and had a feeling I'd like it there. An almost perfect 5-star rating is hard to ignore, so I decided to give their team a call. I originally thought I was calling their 1st Street location since it's much closer to home, but I must have accidentally clicked on their East 5th location instead. (Best mistake ever, haha!) My call was quickly answered by Kit, who let me know I could be seen just a few hours later. I was excited but also nervous, a bad haircut can ruin anyone's day, and I really didn't want to deal with that. I'm so happy to report that everything went incredibly well. Kit instantly put my nerves at ease. She's fantastic at communication, and I loved the collaboration we had while trying out a new style. I am incredibly thankful... I stumbled onto Scruff's because a friend in Monterey CA had been here when he visited some thought I would give it a shot. As a stylist myself, I knew to come prepared with what I liked and didn't like. My barber, Darren, was great and was good company too. I like what he's doing with my hair and I like that he's helping me make some good choices. He's turned me I to a Kevin Murphy Touchable fan. I can't get enough of this stuff. Great atmosphere with clever details and the barbers all get along and the "Free Britney" t-shirts they wear....perfect. I don't even like to submit negative reviews, but this was an upsetting experience and way overpriced! Charged $35 for a 5 minute easy beard trim; but it turned out horrible. Worst barber experience I've ever had, to be honest. I asked Richie (I think was his name) for a fade. He said sure, then proceeded to trim my beard. He didn't use a straight razor to line me up, and it was uneven. When I pointed it out, he told me it was because of the scarring on my cheek....I don't even have any scars on my face! So that was weird. Just seemed lazy. Then, he told me he didn't have time for a fade, after he already started trimming my beard. They weren't even busy. And it felt like he rushed the trim, lined it up horribly and left me with 5 o'clock shadow. I had to go home and clean it up myself. I wasted my time and money, just to end up shaving it myself afterward. And I didn't even get a fade. After paying a minimum $35 for the worst beard trimming experience, they don't even apply beard oil/cream at the end. At least provide something nice at the end if you're gonna charge the most for the least amount of work. Somehow, I left scruffier then when I arrived. I definitely expected more, I was highly disappointed! I would recommend finding a real barber who takes pride in their work, one who actually cares about their customers. read more

Needed a new barber, a haircut today, and a placei felt catered to LGBTQ, all at the same time. I checked out the reviews on Yelp and a number of places came up with 5 stars, which I really prefer. This was the furthest from me, but had the availability I needed and checked the other box so I booked a cut. I could not be more satisfied. Mike Abney is super friendly, great at cutting, and gave me the best cut I've had in years, with very little explanation from me since I'm not expert in all the descriptors. I have started using Scruffs Barber recently for my haircuts. I started using them during covid time as I wanted somewhere close to my home in the eastside. Well I was very impressed. I am one of those clean freaks who was worried about going out into public places with covid. But it had been like 4 month since I had my hair did and I started to look, well words can not describe. So I booked an appointment with Tim as he was recommended to me by my friend. So I got there and I noticed the sign on the door. The were not letting any one in without thanking their tempeture. This was a great start. I got in my chair and they gave me a new mask so I would not get hair on my own mask. This I thought was very thoughtfull as I was concerned about all those little hairs getting stuck I'm my mask. Got to talk with Tim while he did my hair but I was very aware of what was going on around me. the place was very clean and the staff and other barbers were all taking great protocal. I ended up leaving with a great hair cut and have been back and it is all the same. I also watch all the other barbers cut the other customers hair and they all look really good on everyone that goes in there. so now let's be real you all know you sit in the chair and look at the other people getting their hair did and sometimes you see a haircut on someone and your like dang that barber really did a job on that person, well this has not been the case everytime I have gone in there so far.
