Driving through town and Avenue Barbershop was recommended for a quick cut. I have very course hair with a cowlick in the back and it's hard to get my style right. Sal took me right away and listened to what I like and what I expected. "Short but not too short that you can see my scalp, enough hair left on top so that I can do something with it, the sides to a point please, and the back to follow the natural hairline." Sal cut it exactly as I wanted it (yes , he made a few suggestions here and there but only so that I could provide feedback), and I left feeling lighter and refreshed. I rarely ever leave reviews, but this was an awful experience and I hope others steer clear. I had an appointment with Erin, and the unprofessionalism started from the beginning as she was late. I'd never been to a barbershop where I have to wait 10+ minutes on the barber to arrive. Secondly, every time I explained what I wanted (1 even showed her a picture), she acted as if I were speaking a foreign language. She was unnecessarily rude and sarcastic in every response she gave. Picked this shop to get the boyfriend a haircut before attending a wedding in Wimberley. This spot had great reviews online and they had appointments available for the date and time we needed. Overall, they did a decent job on his haircut. A few things we noticed and weren't particularly fond of was: 1. the barber's opinion on what we wanted for his hair & that it wouldn't look good - (his cut has been done before, but we're now re-starting it from scratch so it's not yet finished). 2. we weren't sure how short we wanted to go on the sides and suggested Sal test the lengths and if need be, go a little shorter. I scheduled an appointment at another "barber shop" in town and once I sat down the other business informed me they weren't licensed barbers and could not deliver the cut I desired. I walked down the street and explained my situation to the fine gentlemen at Avenue Barber Shop. Jeremy got me right in and was very accommodating and personable. He absolutely crushed a medium skin fade with a hard part! The shop is a legit barbershop, not some place that draws your business based off of having a game on the t.v. and handing you a cheap beer when you walk in. If you want a terrific, expert, inexpensive haircut that's going to look good even a month after you got it, get yer butt to South Congress. I came here after a long history of getting salon cuts wherever my wife went. The girls were nice, and the cuts looked great out the door, but within a few weeks, the sides had grown out funky or the neckline was looking scraggly. The reason? Salons are great at women's hair, but not men's. You need a real barber, one who knows men's hair and how it grows out. You need the guys at Avenue. I've been here three times: had one cut from Jason, and the other two from Jeremy (both from Ohio! my home state). Each cut was clean, looked good, and best of all, it stayed looking good after a month. (Also: they do a straight razor in the back, which feels awesome.) Best of all? $18 + tip. The atmosphere is old-school, the barbering is old-school, but the styling isn't old school. The guys are all young, and know what's hip. Classic barbershop that does everything you'd expect and does it wonderfully. Vince is my go to guy and he is on point. The shop has no frills but feels just right. Stacks of magazines at the end of the seats. Four chairs, usually three up and running at any given time. You can't book an appointment so get there or expect a wait of an hour or so. Okay..... The first review I had for Avenue Barbershop was over 8 months ago. I have been back ever since. My first review, I gave them a 1 star because I called several tines and they never picked up the phone. But now I'm giving this place a "5-star." One of the barbers told me today that he was going through the yelp reviews and noticed I gave them a low review, but it was due to the phone, not the service. The service here is absolutely amazing! Every time I go in for a haircut, I tell them/show them (if I have a picture of the haircut) of what I want, they deliver. So far I have only gone to three barbers, but if there are other barbers there who are available I'll go to them. This isn't your typical barbershop since lots of barbershops these days have women barbers. Not to sound sexist but every time I think of a barbershop, I think of the Andy Griffith Show and the only staff there are men. The barbers here wear the white button up shirts, black tie and black pants Avenue Barbershop is a small place, takes cash only and they'll take care of you.
