I can't say enough good things about this place.. it's definitely one of the very few last true old school barber shops in the Austin area. It's a no frills kind of place. But all of the barbers Know what they're doing and do a Great Job doing it! It has a small town barber shop kind of feel. There is no website with a scheduling option. You come in when you have time, they put your name on a list, you have a seat in a waiting area and they call you when they get to you. I went in for my first time today and got a trim and a hot shave by Billy. It was reasonably priced unlike a lot of other places in Austin. Overall an amazing experience. I think the last time I had these two Services done elsewhere in the Austin area it cost me nearly a $110 bucks.. with loud music playing in the background, a lot of hustle and bustle with bright lights, beers being served, and yada yada yada... I have been going to Adolph's Barber Shop since I moved to Austin about 2 years ago. Everyone is very friendly and the longest I have ever had to wait for a hair cut is around 10 to 15 minutes tops. The price is also affordable which is great, and allows me to get my haircut more frequently. My latest haircut was done by Rachel Marroquin who did a great job listening to what I was trying to go for and I was very happy with the way my hair turned out. Nice folks, but they could really benefit from an online scheduler like at South Austin Barber Shop. When I walk-in, they ask if I'm already on the list. (Before I'm let in through the front door, which is key-locked via dead-bolt during business hours.) When I call, they won't put me on the list. I just moved from Cali so I was looking for a new barber shop. Wait was around 15min so pretty short plus the price is decent. I got the young female with glasses. Avoid her. She sucks. Fade didn't even look like a fade...more like a 1. You would think for a place that charges extra for fade that they'd hire barbers who know how to do a fade. I'll give this place another try after a month due to pretty good reviews but definitely waiting for someone else instead of her. Update: Went back and definitely had a much better experience. 25min wait but that's because I wanted to be specific on who was going to cut my hair. Heed the warning of the very few low star reviews. To start, I am a regular at Avenue Barbershop on South Congress, and yes I'm very very sorry I cheated to see if saving $156 a year on haircuts would be worth the switch. Upon first entry I noticed that none of the barbers have anything close to an old fashioned haircut themselves... red flag. I take a seat in the chair and was asked what I wanted, told the man a three on the bottom half blended up and I part it on the left. 15 mins later after a horrible conversation I could hardly understand, english wasn't great(not a cause for a bad haircut), I was up out of the chair. The lack of care that is inputed towards the cut at this barbershop is not even on par with your typical supercuts. My neck wasn't shaved, and hair wasn't even parted for precision blend. I have no clue where these 5 star ratings are coming from. These people have obviously never been to a real barber. read more

It's easy to forget that sometimes, it's what you don't get that makes a shop so special. Last week I caved. In a moment of weakness, I decided to go to Supercuts. Like keeping a bad girlfriend around, I rationalized it away (it's only $3 more, it's right down the road, the haircut can't be that bad) knowing, deep down in my soul, that it was the wrong decision. I parked, smashing my bumper into the curb. I should've listen to the universe and walked away, but I'm real, real dumb sometimes. Into Supercuts I went. The unusually claustrophobic retail space was made moreso by the 5 others in line ahead of me. I listened as they dutifully gave their personal info, address, phone number, to the lady at the front desk. You're not managing my 401k, you're cutting my damn hair...have we really become this complacent? Behind the front desk lady hung a large monitor, radiant and proud. It displayed the constantly swelling waitlist. Wait...that list had 11 people on it...there weren't even 11 people in the entire store! I watched in horror as the names multiplied, jumping ahead in the queue, in front of the people that were physically here. Apparently their app lets you schedule an appointment and cut in line, even if someone has been there, physically waiting. The line grew shorter. I drew near. My time was neigh. As I approached the census taker, I listened to one of the employees giving the customer a hard sell as she cut his hair. She loudly proclaimed the benefits of tea tree shampoo to the grizzled veteran with a sparse buzzcut. Jesus Christ lady leave him alone! Can a man get no respite?!? I turned on my heels and bolted. As the door swung softly shut, I heard the front desk lady asking for my social security number. Twenty minutes later I was at Adolph's. Ten minutes after that my haircut was finished. Have had my hair cut here 5 times in the last year or so. Four different barbers have done the job including today. All of the barbers here are seasoned and experienced. Every haircut has been done well and timely. There were about 6 people waiting today when I arrived. There were 6 or 7 barbers working so it went quickly. Some people waiting are there for a particular barber but I take the first available because my haircut is pretty simple. What earns this place 5 stars is the price. $10 for a haircut is definitely "old school" and has been worthy of at least a $5 tip. I'll be back!!!! read more

After visiting a few various barber shops in Austin over the past 5 months, I will officially call Adolph's Barber Shop my home. Haircuts start at $10 and go up depending on what you want and it is very reasonable. At any given time of the day upon walking in, you will find at least 4 barbers cutting hair which is great because you can get in and out without having to wait a long time. Of course there are at least 8 I believe barbers (both women and men) working full time so you will always have someone to cut your hair. I go to Senor Martinez and he is great. I always get a military fade high and tight and he knows how to do it. They have great hours and are in a good location so if you looking for a place to get your fade this is a great place. read more

My increasing dissatisfaction with haircuts from Great Clips (especially at $14 per visit) forced me to look for a new barber shop. After some preliminary googling, I came across Adolph's. All the great reviews turned me on to it, and I decided to swing by as soon as they opened yesterday to give them a shot. I live in southwest Austin, so it was only a 10-minute drive. I got my haircut immediately, and it looked great! The barber was very friendly and only charged me $10 for the cut. I liked the overall atmosphere of the place, too--it seemed intentionally old-fashioned. They even had a big TV that was showing an old movie on AMC. I was quite satisfied with this place on every account. Needless to say, I will not be returning to Great Clips--not when Adolph's is such an appealing alternative. read more

5 STARS for a consistent, inexpensive haircut! I tried to go to the SAME Super Cuts attempting to get the SAME "stylist" (when I did find a good one) for the SAME short haircut I've always had- yeah I know lame but maybe I'm trying to hold onto my 'youth' ok. Unfortunately there seems to be a high rate of turnover at places like that to where I would be lucky to have the same good person cut my hair three times in a row. That stopped after my first visit to Tomas Barber Shop. Theresa has now been cutting my hair for about 5 years now. I love it because the only hair question I MAY get when it's colder is "do you want to go with a 1 and a half or 2?" That's it! Otherwise we can shoot the crap about anything and everything else we please. I don't even need to look into the mirror when she's done although she'll still offer for the perchance I may have turned high-maintenance on her. All of this for $9! Even with a $5 tip I still come out cheaper than going to a Super Cuts or someplace WITH a coupon! Hours are 730am to 6pm Tue - Fri. Saturdays they close at 5pm and closed on Sundays and Mondays. It's located in a white building shared with a jewelry store near the corner of Manchaca and Ben White just east of the Conoco gas station. If you drive past Jack-In-The-Box you've gone too far. I usually go in the early mornings without much wait, if any. All the barbers seem to have been there some time and have their regulars. With 7 chairs available chances are you can walk in during the day and not have much of a wait- unless you go on Wednesdays which is "Senior Citizens" discount day. Hmmm...that may explain why "Gunsmoke" seems to always be playing on TV. So checkout Theresa- she's the one at the back left corner when you walk in- or any of the other barbers at Tomas Barber Shop...there are definitely worse cuts you could get in town for MORE than $9! read more

This is my new favorite barbershop. Sure, it's not as hip as those other too cool for school chains like Floyd's, but who needs "hip" for a good haircut? This is just a straight up no frills barbershop, and they get the job done! I walked in and it was a little awkward at first because there is no host or place to put your name on a list. There are just about 10 chairs and you just kind of make eye contact with someone and ask them if you can get a hair cut. I think I lucked out on my first visit and got Maria. She said she had been at that barbershop for 20 years! What?! Who has that much experience in the same place? I was in good hands for sure. She even made some recommendations on how I should get it cut and she was right on. Glad I took her advice. I've only been once, but when I got home, my wife really liked it and someone at work even asked me if I've been working out. Ha! Well, I'm sold. Definitely coming back here. I'm sure everyone's experience depends on who you get. All the barbers looked like they knew their craft and had been doing it a long long time. Plus the cost of $10? While going to school at UT, I had a hard time finding a really good place to get a cheap GOOD haircut. I'm talking about 9-10 bucks and my hair doesn't look lopsided. I also didn't want some barber shop chain either. People come and go from those places. Back home in El Paso, I always used to go to a privately owned barbershop with a group of 5 or 6 reliable Mexican guys who knew what they were doing. I looked for so long to find the same place here, but had no luck. Every place I tried out around Riverside/Oltorf was cheap, but they were kinda scary/ghetto and they did a good job maybe like half of the time. After moving back to Austin, I wanted to find a good place away from Riverside (as college students we're oblivious to that area)... so I randomly decided to try this place after a Google search. It's on my way to/from work so it's convenient for me. I walked in for the first time, and I was so relieved to feel like I was back at my old barbershop in EP. 40-50's ish aged barbers, conversing in Spanish and it was clean and not ghetto and not scary. I sat down with a gentleman named Mario and he totally got the job done and I was convinced that I had finally found a good place. Mario was even out one day and I had my hair cut by Maria and she had done a pretty damn good job too. BTW, haircuts are $9 bucks here. CHEAP AND GOOD. read more

I have been here twice and have been pleased both times. I never know what to tell the barber when they ask what I want, but the first time I went in Maria took care of me. She was really nice and I got one of the best haircuts I have had in years. My second visit was not as easy. Maria already had a customer, so I took the first person available. I don't think I communicated with him well how I wanted my hair to look, and after he finished I left knowing that it wasn't a perfect hair cut. When I got home, I looked at it more and realized that it was nowhere near what I wanted it to be. So I went back to Adolph's to get it fixed. The gentleman who cut my hair the first time was busy, so another gentleman fixed my hair. I was apologetic, but he kept telling me it was no big deal and not to worry. I'm currently growing my hair out and just needed a trim to keep my hair from going too wild. Just waiting for the top to catch up with the bottom. Anyway, I stopped by here at about 11am on a weekday. There were some people sitting down so I took a seat. The clientel seemed to be a much older crowd with some exceptions. A very diverse crowd: the barbers and the clients. I brought a book and waited for about 30 minutes when a seat opened up which I took. It's first come first serve. I had a really simple haircut so it was pretty fast. It was $12 and I gave a nice tip. I'd definitely come here to get a haircut again. The price is great and they know what they are doing. I've been getting my hair cut here for the last 5 years, or so. I don't really need a complicated haircut, but I wear it on the longer side so it's not just a matter of deciding what number I want on the clippers. They do a fantastic job for an incredibly reasonable price. The price allows me to tip more generously, which I really like to do especially given the quality of the haircuts here. When you walk in, a bunch of friendly barbers welcome you and look for you to acknowledge that you'd be next in line for one of them. If there is one you've gotten to know, they'll let you know how many people are in front of you. I've had Billy cut my hair the most over the years. He is very friendly and does a great job. If Billy is busy, or I'm in a hurry, I'll just look for an open spot at someone else's station. Matty, next to Billy, I believe I have her name right, has done an excellent job, too, as have several others, a couple who have moved on. Matty is very friendly and welcoming. The truth is, looking around the room, I bet anywhere I chose would be a good experience. Adolph's is the smoothest and most welcoming hair cutting experience I've been able to depend on. This is the place I get a great cut by a group if people that love what they do. I have not gotten a bad cut here and it is always the same group that are cutting hair. I have gone during the weekday and it is not very busy. They always have 4 or5 clients getting cuts and one barber waiting. I went on a Saturday and it was packed. I just recently moved to Austin, and I was looking for a local (not franchise) barber shop that was cheap and close to home. I found Adolph's on yelp and read the reviews. Since it was on my way to work, I figured I'd give it a try. In a nutshell, haircuts were $10. I arrived after 1pm on a Thursday, and there was no line. Two of the barbers were available at the time of my arrival. I asked my barber if he knew what a Caesar cut was. He did not know. I can already tell he was pretty basic in his cuts, and has no desire to know anything more than fades and military cuts. Haircut took about 10-15 minutes. I have short hair, and was just wanting a touchup to allow for the top to grow out. Barber did a good job cleaning it up and making it look sharp. As I was about to pay, I found out that they do not take credit/debit cards. If you forget to bring cash, they will refer you to the Conoco station on the corner. ATM fee was $2.25 (plus whatever your bank will charge you...most likely another $2.00 fee). I tipped the barber $2.00. Would I recommend this place? Maybe. It's a men's haircut place. There is no music. It's catered to the older generation (ages 50+). Very little personality. Unsure whether they like their job or not. Little interaction with new customers (unless you're a regular). No desire to even try to sell any of their hair products. I'd say use this place if it's convenient for you, and you have little desire to make it your favorite place to go to. In the end, you get what you pay for, and sometimes paying more ensures you getting what you REALLY want done to your hair. read more

But the fact that I'm writing this after 5 months oughtta tell you that the place is THE PLACE for a clean, affordable, professional, done-the-old-fashion-way haircut in the Capital of the Lone Star State. No product push, no pretenses, no fancy-wansy hair wash, Adolfo and his crew cuts to the chase and gets you ready for a job interview, a passport photo or, of course, a good couple of weeks of good hair days. I wish I could remember the name of the gent that did my hair that day -it happened 5 months ago, remember?-. He, as well as the rest of barbers are superb. Why do I say the rest of barbers are superb if I had not been attended by them? Because ALL of the chairs were busy, all patrons took off with a smile on their faces after giving tips and many thanks to the barbers, and needless to say, all went their way with a good haircut. I found this place on yelp and the reviews were good but there weren't too many, so I was skeptical. I went there today and had my hair cut by Maria. I wanted a simple cut, just a number 2 guard on the sides and finger length scissor cut on top with a rounded back. She paid VERY close attention to detail and took her time but still managed to get done very quickly. The cut was clean, even and blended perfectly into my beard. The shop itself was very clean and inviting. The barbers were pretty fun to be around as well. The Travel Channel was on the Big Screen and everyone was watching Andrew Zimmern chow down on some craziness but it was still a professional environment. When all was said and done ... 9 bucks. Sweet. Overall, a good experience. I will return when my hair returns. Thanks Maria.
