7 months ago I went to this establishment to get a "trim" because my usual barber was out of town. i had been growing my hair for 2 years but needed the dead ends cut and a little shaping. I showed Cam a picture and described in detail what I wanted. I asked him if he had experience cutting curly hair, and he said yes. He then spins me around in the chair and starts cutting my hair. My eyes were closed a lot of the time because of course, I didn't want to get hair in my eyes. several deep snips had happened and he then spun me back around to face the mirror. I opened my eyes to look when there was a lull in the action and WOW. I couldn't believe my eyes. Not only did Cam take 12 months' worth of growth off, but he took it upon himself to angle my hair differently than the desired cut, and he also decided to THIN MY HAIR OUT WITHOUT ASKING ME FIRST! I AM 46 YEARS OLD! WHY WOULD I WANT THINNER HAIR???? i had to let him finish because I was cooked. i got up out of the chair immediately and went straight home to see exactly what this sorry excuse for a barber did. I was mortified. if you google it, curly hair is not supposed to be cut with thinning shears because it shreds the curls. He had ruined all the ringlets I had been growing for 2 years. my hair had no texture, shape, or form. i then proceeded to go back to the barbershop to confront this man about his terrible service. Cam and THE OWNER both tried to gaslight me and tell me it was my fault this happened and that I should learn how to communicate better. They even patronized me over the refund I demanded and acted as if I were petty. the audacity. The only reason why I didn't crash out on both of them was because I was starting a new job that Monday. Even today my hair isn't back to normal and from what my barber says, it's gonna take even more time to get the curls back with several corrective cuts. DO NOT GET YOUR HAIRCUT HERE EVER!!!!!!!! you're better off letting a goat chew it off. i gave it one star because the website wouldn't let me give a zero. all of these good reviews have to be fake. read more

All around great people and talented at what they do I have gotten cuts from Saul and Chris both of them A++ on their craft. I moved to Austin at the beginning of 2018 from chicago. I assumed without a doubt that i would easily be able to replace my queer barber. Sadly I had no luck, zero, until I found Ru @queerfriendlybarber and the Barbashop. Having someone who's capable of cutting a fade and long hair in one sitting is priceless. Let's not mention the razor cut, hot towel and essential oils that make your neck feel awesome. The shop is tidy and clean. Parking is simple and finding the front door is easy. All of this badassery for 35$ is ridiculous. I'm not even sure why I'm sharing this with you because I would prefer to keep this a secret for myself. Seriously... go get a cut here. I'm not picky about haircuts at all, so when I say I got the only bad haircut of my life here you know I mean it. Stylist gave me a completely different cut from what I showed him. As it was much shorter, there's no way to fix it other than to wait for it to grow out. I don't think they (or at least my barber) are used to doing longer or more textured cuts. If you want something standard done with clippers you're probably fine, but I've paid far less for far better haircuts. Stylist was very sweet, that's the only reason it's not one star. read more

I was recommended from a good friend to try out The Barbashop and I can tell you with absolute certainty, it is the most exceptional experience I've ever had in terms of getting a haircut. After getting a haircut like this, I'm instilled with a newfound sense of confidence and feel closer to who I am and how I want to look. The best part of the experience starts with who cut my hair. The barber who did my hair, Ru, is a wonderful, down to earth person who makes you feel comfortable, especially when you're making big decisions like cutting off over eight inches of hair. The atmosphere is incredible. It's in a sleek warehouse type building that has some incredible local businesses nearby. Anyone would feel comfortable and even energized in this place. My family came to visit Austin to see our oldest son, and my wife set up an appointment for our youngest son and me: Him to get a haircut and me to get a shave. But after I saw the job Ruby did on my son's hair, my wife commented that I should get a haircut as well to "fix" the haircut I just got last week in addition to getting a traditional straight-razor shave. I am SO glad I did both. Our barber was Ruby, from whom our oldest son gets his haircuts. As the shop owner Able said, "Ruby is the best barber in Austin." He wasn't lying. I have never had the kind of treatment that I got at The Barbashop in my life in all my life. Ruby's attention to the smallest detail while cutting my hair was simply amazing. And the shave? OMG! Ruby's a magician! The shop itself is rather barebones. But that's only because - as of the time of this writing - it's only nine days old, so they still have to get all accouterments installed like a reception desk. But no matter, the shop is fully functional. And make no bones about it: It's a barbershop, not a hair styling salon. Recently moved here from LA, I was going to Floyd's Barbershop initially but I hated the overturn there. It was hard to find a barber that would stay long enough to give me a consistent cut. From the first time I walked into the Barbashop I knew I found my new home. The clean aesthetics made it very welcoming, not to mention Abel and Ru's huge smiles and personalities! Not only did Ru take the time to figure out what hair cut I wanted, but also took the time to explain to me how different cuts would look on me and also how to maintain my hair and beard. It's been by the far the best low fade I've ever received both in LA and Austin. Ru even did a great job hiding my receding hairline . Then it was finished up with a warm tea tree oil towel wrap. Been here twice, the first time it was hard to locate, both times I got a bad cut. Stray hairs were uncut and my fade was once again too high. Paid close to 40 before tax n tip. I think he charged me for a beard trim but he only faded the sideburns. I didn't want to insult the guy bc he messed up my first one even worse. I just won't go here anymore. read more

I've been looking for a place in Austin for 8 months now and have officially found my spot! First off, I walked in and was immediately drawn to the aesthetic of the shop, but most importantly how welcoming the experience was right off the bat. Had the privilege of having Ru take care of me today and she not only cut it the way that I wanted, but offered her own unique spin which turned out phenomenal. Also, not sure if it's just been my experience while living in Austin, but I haven't found a place until today where the person cutting my hair actually connected and chatted with me so that was nice for a change.
