My boyfriend tried the vanilla soft serve with Nutella filled Aboong. The warm fish against the cold ice cream created a great mix of textures and flavours, but once the fish is gone the ice cream itself is just ok. The taiyaki, in my humble opinion, are the winners. The Oreo taiyaki was absolutely delicious! It came out super fresh, they filled both the body AND tail with Oreo so every bite had a great ratio of chewy fish and filling. Went to somi to get dessert after lunch. Ordered a matcha strawberry milk and a taiyaki filled with custard. The taiyaki was tasty and freshly made. Also tried the Oreo filling and next time I'll ask for extra filling. I felt like the filling was lacking in quantity but that's just my personal preference. The restaurant is small and tables are situated as best they can with one blocking the employee only door. The manager worker, pushing a cart told me that I was blocking this way and he needed to get him to the entrance. I proceeded to get up and allow him to move the chair where he wanted to. He told me well. I'm gonna be coming back back-and-forth as if to say don't sit back down. Another customer witnessing the exchange move the chair so that he could get in and out. When he came back out, he points to the chair and say you can sit down now. Customer service needs everything to me to include management having a responsibility to the customer that support their business. Yesterday Somisomi was showcasing a collab exclusive flavor 8-bit boysenberry, only available from April 18 to April 26. The line was longer than I've ever seen it wrapping around outside. I saw so many young people in cosplay, possibly characters for an anime I'm not familiar with. Look at the photos and see if you recognize it. A character might be called Silverwolf? Anyway, I was so happy to see Somisomi so busy. My friend and I stayed in line for 20 minutes before we were able to place our order, we had only 10 minutes to spare before our tickets at the Aratani Theatre. We wanted to have the milk and 8-bit boysenberry swirl soft serve in a cup. Unfortunately, we realized that we had to decide between possibly not being led into our reserved seat at the theater or missing out on this delicious dessert. It was just a matter of not realizing how long it would take. I don't blame Somisomi because they had a huge number of ahbong to make fresh, and of course, there was no way to cut in line We ended up telling the lovely staff that we had to leave, and to please give our orders under "Coco" to someone for free so it wouldn't be wasted. Delicious and satisfying sweet treat! I visited Somisomi after having dinner in the area and had a good experience; I loved my ice cream and my taiyaki. This location is quite busy and has a lively atmosphere with limited indoor and outdoor seating. The line moves pretty quickly in my experience. Orders are placed on an iPad, and your name is called out when it's ready. The only issue I had was a missing item, but the staff were friendly and quickly rectified this when it was brought to their attention. I was in town from San Diego with a group of students and we decided to stop at Somisomi on a very hot Friday afternoon. The shop is right in Japantown and is on a bustling and fun street. The folks working the counter were efficient, but not as friendly as I would have liked. I ordered a matcha soft serve with Biscoff crumbles and an Ah-boong (filled with custard) also known as a taiyaki in Japan. Standing outside on the sidewalk, I ate my taiyaki first and then by the time I started to eat my soft serve, it was a soupy mess. Oh well - 90 plus degrees will do that. The soft serve was delicious and the matcha flavor was light and sweet with no hint of bitterness. The taiyaki was fresh and crisp, although there was not much custard inside of it. There are standing tables and a few tables inside, but there was not enough seating inside for all of us... After completely covering myself in matcha ice cream, I wanted to wash my hands, but Somisomi does not have a bathroom customers can use which was disappointing. The amount of people that walk in here on a weekend is incredible and without fail I get my Ah boong in less than 7 mins! I tried the Cookies n' Cream w/ Dalgona during this visit and my eyes rolled. My go to is a matcha soft serve in a custard filled Taikyaki. The matcha has good flavor and not too sweet. The ube/matcha combo is a good choice, but IMO the ube over powers the matcha flavor. This place is always busy on the weekends. Parking is either street or structure parking. It is in the heart of J-town. Ambiance is casual and loud. The interior is small and has a few tables and chairs to sit. There is a long tall bar where you can eat your dessert and some seats outside to eat. There are a few ways you can eat your dessert. I chose the upside down method because it does get messy and I can never eat ice cream from a cone without dropping part of my dessert. You get free toppings of your choice. Look at my picture for the upside down. I also asked for extra filling in my order, and I'm glad I was watching them make it because they didn't add the extra. My husband's order didn't have extra filling so they took the top apart and added another spoonful without cross contaminating their supplies. I think the cashier/order taking should repeat any "special requests" so there isn't any mix up in the end. That's the reason for my 4 stars. You can also get taikiyaki as a whole with fillings but it does take longer to make. 2 or 5 pieces. Price isn't bad and their finished products are always fresh and hot. read more

I've been to Somisomi a few times, was sad that the location at the Santa Anita mall closed. Even tho this location is closer I always dread the crowds, parking and unfortunately the lack of cleanliness outside. There's usually homeless ppl roaming around and just a stale smell that lingers outside which is pretty much the only place you can eat it since it won't travel well. The line was long even on a Wednesday night but moved pretty quickly and very easy to place order at the kiosk up front. This time I ordered the milk and ube and I was very tempted to try the cookie butter one. I got the taiyaki with black sesame filling and upside down since I find that the easiest way to eat it and any dripping from the soft serve will fall into the cup. I would say it always hits and I always enjoy it even though I have a hard time finishing the whole thing. Nothing wrong with the place itself or what they serve, I'm just not a fan of the location and lack of dining area inside.
