I have come here a few times in the past and I have personally always had a great experience. When I was young I had a cupcake decorating party here and it was a blast. I have also stopped in for the occasional cupcake and have experienced nice and quick service. I had my birthday last week and my mom ordered me this cake, it turned out perfect and I was so happy with it. We all enjoyed the cake as it was very good and not dry at all! Food 4/5: The two favorites were the lemon cake and strawberry short cake. They were both so delicious and yummy! My only complaint was the vanilla cake on the variety cake slices were a bit dry. Service 5/5: Something Sweet makes picking up your order so easy. I showed up right on time at my pick up time and everything was bagged and ready to go. I was in and out within 5 minutes. Full disclosure- I love the Food Network and when Maddie Lu's brownies popped up on my social media feed- like a Pavlov trained consumer- I immediately got in my car and drove there. The shop was busy on the Saturday before Mother's Day. Many cake boxes were stacked up for pickup and a couple was engaged in a consultation with an employee. Being a first timer, I wanted to try a few treats. Opted for a 4-pack of cupcakes, a brownie 3-pack, and a chocolate covered strawberry 6-pack. When my bill was almost $50 my only thought was "My husband is going to kill me." I'm a pretty good baker, so I needed these to be amazing to justify the cost. We started with the brownies- the cookie dough brownie was a hard no. The cookie dough on top of the brownie tasted artificial. The cheesecake topped brownie (with whipped cream and three berries) was tastier, but had my family saying, "We like your cheesecake more." The chocolate Twix topped brownie was my personal favorite, but I'm a death by chocolate kinda gal. The consensus from the family was that I make better brownies (sorry Maddie Lu). Next up, the chocolate covered strawberries. They were nice large strawberries, but the chocolate was overly sweet and shattered off after the first bite. Now, I needed the cupcakes to be phenomenal. Our 4-pack included red velvet, vanilla, cookie dough, and lemon. Everyone liked the cupcakes. Depending on palates, there was a favorite for all. The variety of flavors are in abundance and keeps me going back again and again because everything is scrumptious! I love that there are a lot of fresh items available on a walk in basis, making last minute treats easy. I appreciate the welcomeness when one walks in the door and her Mom seems to keeps things super organized on busy order ahead pick up days! Maddie always has fun new ideas for irresistible nibbles and everything on display is stunning! She strives for perfection. Business is stealing other baker's images from online and passing these pictures off as their own work to sell their own products is fully misleading and lying to customers. I came across your advertisement on Facebook to preorder your holidays pies and noticed some of the images didn't look right.. did a simple reverse image search and very quickly found the images you posted for some of your pies are not your images and are from Pinterest or where ever else. I tried to bring attention to this on their Facebook post but my comments got deleted or hidden which seems to be common practice for this business as on many of her posts you see a Facebook disclaimer that comments are filtered.. Real shame that a small business is stealing from other small businesses and to be so blatant about it. Duluth store-I ordered a dozen cupcakes the other day for a small birthday gathering. I had gotten cupcakes when the Duluth store first opened and was impressed, so I expected the same. Sadly, not really the case. Seemed so small! Definitely not a full-sized cupcake, and no real decadent "wow" factor. Some weren't as wide as the hole in the box even. Kinda disappointed. One Oreo cupcake had a small Oreo on top and the other had a chunk of big one. You can compare the size of the tiny Oreo to the cupcake for scale. read more

$2 special brought me from St. Paul to here. This has been known to happen. I've long given up on the food network channel after it became the SSDD channel. The downside was missing another local baker, Maddie Lu winning. They have actual small cakes on display and they are pretty fancy. As you walk in they have candles and other accessories. We enjoyed a half dozen that included, strawberry, mint green, hazelnut frosting and the token chocolate that I always have to try. I bought the frosted cookie too. I got there just in time at 4 on Sat. before the line went out the door. The Northern burbs needed something sweet and special. read more

We ordered our wedding cake about 5 months in advance. I enjoyed being able to taste test and such. We found out our event center couldn't accommodate taking the cake a day early due to lack of refrigerator space. So we asked our friends to help us out. They picked up our cake, and brought it to our event center. As soon as I saw it, I knew something was wrong. It was a plain, white 3 tiered cake. We had ordered a black cake with red roses to go with our Halloween wedding theme. I noticed it right away, but figured "well, we are just going to eat it anyway." My event planner at our wedding venue noticed the issue, immediately called Maddie Lou and had the correct cake delivered. Ordered a 230$ birthday cake, with a dozen matching cupcakes. This order was originally placed in the Duluth location. The children working at the store had no clue on how to even go about pricing out a cake. So I had to wait for a phone call. Got the call a day later, discussed my options. Everything sounded great. I called to confirm I would d be picking up cake after 6 on a Friday. When I get there ,the cake had been sitting on the counter all day in that humid hot mall. It was july They thought I was coming at ten. So they took it out at ten and let it sit all day long. Even Walmart takes thier cakes out of the cooler. All the decorations either fell off or broke and the cupcake decorations were melted off or broken. The cake was crooked and leaning. Ok I call talk to the owner. Apologies and a half refund. Ok give me refund. Fast forward 3 months. Still no refund. Finally talk to the office manager via email. Tells me to call. Ok they needed my card to issue the refund. So if I would not have called and looked for my refund, I never would have got it. When I asked why nobody reached out to me to get my card info, he stumbled over his words. Basically told me it got lost in the shuffle. Long story short I had to buy decorations to make it presentable , and hunt down my refund, that they just conveniently forgot. The only good thing was the cake did taste good, but looked like crap. I feel they should have given me a full refund. What a disappointment. A good business owner would have followed up immediately and made sure her mistake was remedied right away. Will never go through them again. read more

The cakes and goodies at this bakery are really very good, creative and tasty. Expensive, but seemed to be well worth it............. I would have highly recommended them until today. They are featuring on their online ordering site, under the heading of Christmas items, gingerbread men in the act of sodomy. They had a link from their FB page to the order page. When I noted on their website that this was inappropriate I was promptly and immediately had it made clear that she (Maddie Lu) was not the least religious and I was entitled to my opinion but should not force that on anyone else. Really? Sodomy cookies featured (First time on page) to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The hypocrisy is overwhelming. You don't believe in Jesus Christ, but you are very happy to make money off those who celebrate Him. I am disgusted with this place and I will never spend a dime of my money in there again. So unfortunately I wouldn't even give them 1 star but they blocked after I submitted a review which I submitted in August and she replied today with a rude response for no reason my original review in August said "I'm sad to give this review since I love all your treats but unfortunately my wedding cake was not what my Husband and I hoped for or feel like we asked for ! We had a professional cake baker cut our cake and serve it at our wedding and after 3 slices she began to cut the slices paper thin cause we noticed it was not going to be enough this being we added a layer last minute we asked for a cake that feed 80-100 people and were told we would even have extra sad to say some of our guest didn't even get cake and that was very upsetting for the amount of money we paid ! The cake looked great but unfortunately not even I could tell you how it tasted as for my husband and I barley got a taste we are very disappointed!" After this original post they emailed me and offered me like a 10$ credit for a dessert or something like that when we paid over 350$ for our cake that felt like a slap in the face ! And the random response I got 4 months later is "We have never gotten a complaint about a cake not serving the people suggested and we have made hundreds. When figuring how many people your cake would serve, we used the exact same size scale as we did on the hundreds of other cakes we have sold. It is clear to me that unfortunately it wasn't cut right. Sorry about that, but that isn't something we can control." I ordered a cake here for my gender reveal. I thought the cake was a pretty simple one. Just two pastel colors blended together. However when I picked it up I was shocked at how people who specialize in baking and decorating could do a crappier job than I would've done myself. The colors were completely wrong. And there was no blending whatsoever. I can't even imagine being a bride and ordering from this place for such a special day and having your cake look nothing like the photo you sent over. I'm always pleasantly surprised when I walk in and they've got beautiful cakes pre-made sitting in the case. They're quite tasty as well and priced fairly. I love going in and seeing what creative designs they've thought of. Quick tip is just that the cakes are made with buttercream so if you don't let it sit out at room temp long enough, the buttercream is a tad hard. However, it is buttercream so what do you expect? I came across the kiosk location at the Ridgedale mall and not the Coon Rapids location. The presentation catches the eye and everything is displayed very precisely and professional. There are macaroons, cookie dough in jars, and some cupcakes as well. I can only speak for the macaroons as I did not purchase any of the other items available. Their prices are reasonable and easily displayed. The gal running the stand was very professional and polite. I got a small box of macaroons which is $10 + tax and comes with 5 macaroons of your choice. They have a great variety of macaroons available to choose from including Chocolate Peanut Butter, Lemon, M&M, Birthday Cake, Espresso, Pistachio, Cookie Monster, Chocolate Brownie, Mint, and several others. Out of the five I chose, four were pretty good and flavorful, one I wasn't a fan of that might have been the Chocolate Brownie. I tried super hard to like this place; visited three times. No greeting from employees, short answers, and a general feeling of not wanting to be there from the employees. Overall the customer service is nonexistent. If the cupcakes or fruit crisps had any flavor or anything extraordinary about them the customer service part could always be looked past. Sadly this place is lacking both quality baked goods, customer service, AND the allure of many other baked good places. May as well go to cub, they may be more mass produced but the flavor is at least better, with better service. read more

This place is RACIST. Do not give them your business. I visited this dump July 13th, 2023 around 2pm. A young woman with red or was it strawberry blonde hair ? And a woman with blonde hair were behind the counter. They loudly greeted two white woman who walked in right ahead of me and basically fawned over them. I did not get greeted I just got icy stares and silence. I stood there, smiled and waited to be greeted. The worker with the reddish hair who greeted the white women along with her co worker. Stepped away and allowed her blonde co worker to tend to the white women. Well she must have thought it was a staring contest. Because she continued to stare at me directly in the eyes with a very menacing dead pan look. I just looked at her and awkwardly smiled again waiting for her to greet me with the same enthusiasm she greeted the white women with. Or at very least say "what can I help you with?" Or simply "hello". But with stone like eyes she stared daggers. Then she just turned her head to watch her co worker help the white women. She rudely ignored me to point where the customers who were greeted noticed and very nicely apologized to me! In front of the rude worker. I thanked them and walked out. I believe in giving people chances to redeem them self! 1st experience: I came to pick up an order that was placed by a family member when I saw the cake I was caught off guard and stated the facts, "that is a ugly Rapunzel" I took the cake home to my family and my sis in law who placed the order was so disappointed. My niece cried. Everyone agreed it was a terrible job. Since then she is never returned to order from them. Even the macaroons we ordered were sloppy. We returned the cake and picked up something from their display... They added a bit of a touch to the display and saved the day!!! For that alone I was willing to return to order basic cakes. (Update: Found a Pic of the Rapunzel cake) 2nd experience: I personally ordered a gender reveal cake. We discussed the cake details, she gave great suggestions and I was so excited I couldn't wait for the event. I arrived to pick up the cake and it was boring. So, I stood there trying to find words to express what more I felt the cake needed... before I could finish the owner/manager stated "you don't have to take the cake if you don't want it", I looked at her said "of course I want it, I just want more life in it. It's the day of our event, I don't have much of an option!!!" She took the cake back and jazzed it up! The cake though not neat was attractive as I wanted it to be and I thanked her. And left happy. At the time, I reminded her of my brides maid proposal cookies that I had previously ordered and then postponed. I gave her my pick up date and left excited. The cake I took home fell apart terribly... but I didn't complain. Because of how poorly thought out the placements on the cake were my sis in-law knew where I got the cake from. I laughed it off, It served it purpose! 3rd experience: blurry writing on cookies Brides maid proposal cookies. It's suppose to be an exciting time. I ordered personalized boxes and other little things to put in the box. I wanted to add cookies to the proposal boxes. I went to Something Sweet to order personalized macaroons (I'm new in the area and don't know many places. Everywhere else I called didn't do personalizations.) After hearing the cost, which really wasn't bad but I had already invested so much. I asked for other options. She the manager suggested these cookies! I loved the idea and placed the order and paid in advance. When I went to pick up the cookies, they were beautiful but once again just not neat. I complained and wasn't well received. The wording on the cake " Will you be my bridesmaid? Was blurry. I stared at the cookies trying to decide whether I should take them with their flaws because I have dates on these things! Before I could finish, the employee responds , " it's a good price for all this detail." I mentioned " I'll pay more if I have too but I want the cookies to have clear wording" That comment lead me to say this is my last time for real! She goes to the back and in between time their was an incident where another customer who couldn't see what I was complaining about decided to comment and verbally abuse me, I responded to her with an equivalent insult!! The employee came back and said they would fix the cookies... she took a look at the cookies and agreed with me and pointed out things that I myself didn't notice!!!! (I wasn't going to add the below details but it's necessary to express my feelings throughly about this experience.). I left the store and a few minutes I receive a call from the owner/manager asking me why I caused an explosion in her store. I was confused, had to gather my thoughts and words to express my confusion and offense at the words she used to ask me about the incident. It was so belittling. I told her just cancel my order. I asked her to make sure she looks at her cameras just so she knows that I wasn't the aggressor and I hoedown she regrets how she spoke to me! I drove back to get the money I had paid at the time of my order. The employee told me the manager said we are not giving you anything not the money nor the cookies. I asked her what she thought of why happened earlier she said she didn't see it that her helper (who I barely interacted with was upset!) The employee who made claims about the errors in the cookies now had an attitude with me. I walked out and called the police! All I wanted was my money, nothing more. First experience with this place and it will be my last! I went Friday afternoon/evening to talk to someone about a custom cake order that I needed for the following Saturday. The 2 girls at the register told me I just missed the decorator and I should come back the next day because they were not able to help with custom cakes. I get it, no problem, I'll come back tomorrow. I came back the next day around 12. I was waiting in line with a few other customers when another lady came up to the counter and asked if I had been helped. I told her I was there to ask about a custom cake order. The first words out of her mouth were "I don't have time to talk to you today about custom orders." Her tone was harsh and rude. I tried to explain that I came in last night and was told to come back the next day to talk to someone. She stated again very harshly that she didnt have time for me today and started to rattle off all her excuses as to why she couldnt talk to me. Her cashiers don't know her schedule, training someone in and another delivery. I know she was saying something about an appointment as I turned my back to her and left. I'm sorry if being a customer asking you to talk to me about the service your business provides is a HUGE inconvenience. And if you think I am going to make an appointment to come back a 3rd time to talk to someone so rude, you must be out your mind. If this was the owner, Shame on you! If you were an employee, you should be required to take a course in how to treat customers or fired. If you only talk to people about custom orders via appointments then you should train your cashiers to say that. I would have saved myself the 2nd trip and called. I was coming in for a simple gender reveal cake. I already had what I was looking for picked out. All I needed to know is if you could do it. All you had to do was look at it and say yes or no. By the looks of the other cakes in your gallery wall, you could have done this. The place I ended up ordering it from, I was in and out in 20 min. Congrats on losing business. Rude is an understatement for Maddie the owner. Too bad I have to give her one star, she deserves no stars! I went to order two cakes from her. My husband and I went there on 2-5-19 (during a terrible snow storm...shouldn't have been out driving) and were looking at the gallery wall when Maddie came in behind us from outside. I said to my husband, "good she is here so we can discuss with her our ideas" I asked to speak with Maddie and I was told it would be just a moment. The 16 year old girl then comes back a few minutes later to tell me she cannot speak with me. I left immediately. I was sooo upset. I cried on the way home. I wanted to order 2 cakes from her. One for my son's birthday and the other for my 29 year old son that I lost 6 weeks ago. Friday is his first heavenly birthday since I lost him. I had to wait until my husband got home from work (I don't drive) to take me to her bakery. Who in their right mind would go out in the snow with terrible roads to order a cake??? I would! It means show much to me that I wanted to discuss with her face to face. I went home and wrote my experience on Facebook. She responded with a very rude comment. I then wrote a response to her comment only to find that she blocked my comment. Wow! I was not happy with her at all. Terrible customer service! Thankfully, I found a bakery to make my cakes and I talked directly to the owner. I told her of my experience at Something Sweet by Maddie Lu and she couldn't believe it. The baker I found to make my son's heavenly birthday cake was super sweet. She even told me, "I'm sorry for your loss". Thank God there are wonderful people out there that actually care about customers. If Maddie can't take the time to answer questions for her customers when we come in person for whatever reason, get out of serving customers. Her reason for not speaking to me she wrote on FB was I was exhausted and crying??? Really??? She wasn't even doing any tasks. Well guess what? In my job as an RN I too was very exhausted and cried many times, but I couldn't go and hide and not take care of my patients. Their lives depended on me. She totally disregarded my feelings and made me feel even worse. WHY??? Why would I ever go back to this business or recommend her? I won't! If she can't handle the stress and continues to treat customers so poorly she needs to get out. She is very young and has a lot to learn with customer service. This is not my first poor experience that I've had with this business. I bought some of their macaroons and they were stale. Yuck! I threw them in the trash. The other poor experience I had was when I bought one of their huge caramel apples. The apple had a small round sucker stick, not the usual popsicle wooden sticks that are used to hold a heavy caramel apple. When I was eating it the apple fell off the weak sucker stick and got all dirty. In the trash that went also, after only 2 bites. I wrote a review on FB and she responded stating that they ran out of the wooden sticks. Really??? She should have waited until she had the proper sticks, but I suppose she just wanted to push these apples out the door for profits. She didn't even offer me a replacement caramel apple or a discount. Nothing was offered! I see a pattern here reading all these similar responses to Maddie being rude and having poor customer service. It's just not a one time thing. It's so sad that many people have been treated poorly by Maddie. I definitely will Never shop there again and I also will not recommend her to my family and friends! There's been some drama around a now deleted post by the owner, and I want to support this business... Something Sweet is a good small business! I truly believe that the intent of the original post that has been referenced on FB, YELP, and google reviews is that small businesses have been and continue to be hurt by state mandates. Is COVID serious - YES! Is having a paycheck serious - YES! Is not losing your business serious - YES! So perhaps as 2020 comes to a close, we give each other grace and stop the virtue signaling and cancel culture. We all have different perspectives on what should or should not be happening right now. Now on to my review... The cupcakes, macarons, cakes, and other desserts are delicious. Our family also loved the cheesy chicken enchiladas dinner. It sure is nice having some sort of cupcakery in this neck of the woods. However, my visit left me pretty underwhelmed. The place is VERY cute, and in a great location. There are several seating areas and a pretty muted and relaxing color palette. I think the layout is spacious enough not to feel crowded like some other bakeries tend to. This would be a great place to sit for a bit while eating your goodies. The goodies themselves, however, I wasn't impressed with. There are about 10 flavors of cupcakes, macarons (that are too big and aren't all the same shape/size), truffles, a cold case full of mini cheesecakes, jumbo cupcakes, and cakes, chocolate-dipped pretzels... Lots of stuff to choose from. There are a few gluten-free items. Every single cupcake except red velvet had buttercream frosting - I am not a big fan of red velvet and can't stand buttercream, so I couldn't even try a regular cupcake. The cold case items looked interesting, but the signs had no descriptions of ingredients, and the girl behind the counter responded with "Um...I think?..." to the two questions I asked regarding flavor/frosting. I went with a raspberry cheesecake. It was just okay. Definitely no fresh raspberries were involved in the making, so really, it just tasted like the no-bake boxed Jell-o cheesecake. At $3.75, just not worth it. I might go back to try some other items that looked interesting, like the Porky's Demise (not sure what it contains besides bacon, but I love bacon!). Was dropping something off at the Men's Warehouse in Riverdale and saw this new bakery across the Mall and decided to check it out. The bakery specializes in cupcakes, cakes, sweet treats and those French macarons. We ordered up a 6 pack of the cupcakes and we're very impressed with the wide variety of the selections, including the Samoa (tastes like the girls scout cookie), teachers appreciation and some great chocolate cupcakes. They even have a massive cupcake piled high with frosting and other sweets called the 'mancave' The cupcakes were delicious, the staff was very friendly and the place was crowded. I would recommend it to anyone who has a sweet tooth. Especially for an area of the cities that does not have a lot of local selection to choose from, it's great to have a new local place to grab good food. As a matter of fact the owner is a recent graduate from a culinary school (and a local herself) who jumped right in her with own business... Bold move worth some support. read more

I really wanted to love this place, but I was just underwhelmed. I tried the oreo cupcake and the red velvet cupcake. The cake in both of them were very dry unfortunately. The cream cheese frosting on the red velvet cupcake was on point though! I also tried the mint oreo shake and OMG was that good! I would go back again for some more shakes and that is why I am giving it a 3 star rating. They are more known for cake stuff though, so with that being disappointing I just couldn't give it a higher rating. I will go back and try another cupcake though because at least I know if that's not very good, at least the shake I plan to order will be read more
