We got both chocolate and vanilla cupcakes. The vanilla ones were moist and tasty, the chocolate ones were very dry. The cookie decorations stole the show. Overall could have been better. Came here on a Friday morning and by the time we got there the options were limited. There were about 6 or so options available, and of those 3 were bacon options (we don't do pork). We did try the key lime pie and a mango pineapple one. The filling on both were good, but I liked the key lime one better. The actual donut itself was on the dryer side in my opinion. I stopped in to get some donuts and they had quite the selection! I ended up getting 4 donuts to try including the bakers special churro, a cream filled donut, and two glazed. The flavors were great and so was the texture. The shop was very small but wel kept and the staff was welcoming. The man who served us was very peppy and just a delight. I am excited to come back and try more of their sweets! This location was easy to get to and had plenty of street parking surrounding the shop. read more

Thirsty Whale NEVER disappoints. Stopped in (a day late ) for national donut day, as if anyone needs a reason to get donuts, and grabbed a half dozen with friends. I was roped in on this occasion by their IG showing they had blueberry cake donuts and I don't find cake donuts at many places (looooove cake donuts). I'm also a sucker for a cream cheese danish. Things to know if you've never been: - It's a tight little street just off a tight little intersection. Expect parallel parking, and likely expect to walk about a block as they can get really busy. - It's also right inside, probably 3-4 customers max can fit it. Good news it's easy to see the whole array of what's available. - As with most donut shops it can get spendy compared to a national chain, but well worth it. Their donuts have stellar flavor across the board, and their standard glazed/frosted have a wonderful fluffiness and height. You won't be disappointed. read more

For most holidays we like to grab some baked goods from a local shop. For Easter, we saw the cupcake offerings from Thirsty Whale and knew we had to have them. During pickup, I saw the other delectable breakfast options and ordered a few as well so that we had both a great start and end to the day. Breakfast: I am a Peanut Butter junkie - literally eat and drink anything with Peanut Butter in it and you can find me eating PB out of a jar. The Reeses Bomb donut was just meant for me. A beautiful chocolate glazed donut that was super fluffy and filled to the brim with a creamy - but light - peanut butter filling that tastes like the inside of a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. Just for good measure more Reeses sprinkled on top. Apple Fritter - my favorite breakfast food. Just with the donut it's airy and flavorful. It has just the right amount of glaze to both admire the crunchy exterior with the pillowy apple interior. Cupcakes: Now we had to try all six of the Easter cupcakes. They were beautifully decorated and all tasted phenomenal. Thirsty Whale Bakery knocked it out of the park with my cake! They were so accommodating to my ideas and gave me quotes on all the different cakes I had in mind. Plus it was absolutely delicious! Also, their cheesecake shooters and cupcakes were a big hit that we didn't have any leftover from the wedding. We got so many compliments on it! I only rated 4/5 because the day we were suppose to pick up our tasting box there was a slip up and they didn't have it ready so it made me concerned about them forgetting my order day of wedding. For our wedding we had a delivery window of 11:30-2:30. At 2:30, the cakes still hadn't arrived and when people began calling the day of contact (general bakery) they were closed for the day and no one was getting back to anyone. Eventually we discovered the cake was sent to the wrong wedding venue and no one confirmed anything with our day of coordinator. While the wrong address is certainly problematic, why was no one monitoring phones during the entirety of our delivery window? We were given a delivery window until 2:30 and were only given the bakery line as our day of contact. Why were we not given a useful number that would actually reach a person? The cakes arrived after some guests had left and we are now left with 2 round cakes and approximately 2/3 of the sheet cake we ordered sitting in our freezer. This is AFTER they lost our tasting box order. They compensated us there with the box at no cost and complementary pastries and seemed apologetic. Unfortunately, they have proven to be incompetent again. Currently in the process of resolving them delivering our wedding cakes to the wrong venue. Thus far they have offered to refund our order and give us a complimentary cake for a later date, but honestly that resolution is incredibly unsatisfactory and does not come even close to making up for the stress and disappointment. read more

I was in from out of town and had placed an order in advance for 2 dozen peanut butter balls to add to a dessert platter for my son's wedding rehearsal that evening. I arrived that morning and was handed a small bag with 8 peanut butter 'balls'...none were round, nor were any of them the same size or shape. Basically blobs of pb and chocolate. The situation wasn't handled well at the shop. About 30 minutes later I spoke with the manager via phone and was told the new online ordering system was to blame. She offered a substitute dessert that I would need to travel 45 minutes to the other location to pick up. I didn't have the time. I called back about 30 minutes later and left a voicemail... under the circumstances and it being their error, was it an option to make them now and I could pick them up when ready...I was only 5 minutes away. Peanut butter balls require no baking. She never returned that call. Overall disappointed, poor customer service, undependable business and sadly would not recommend to anyone. I found the speaker with a rating of 4.5 stars on yelp and Apple maps. So I stopped by to try their donuts it seems that some Dunkin' Donuts last November. So I ordered a croissant which was almond croissant. It looked like a cross-croissant wanna be because it was not raised it was thick and not melting in my mouth like a regular croissant. I visited Thirsty Whale on a Friday at 9:15am. I called ahead (they don't allow walk-ins so be sure to call ahead!!) about 30 minutes before I left and ordered a half dozen of assorted donuts. You're able to pick and choose which flavors you want, each are priced individually. There's no "parking" here, but you can pull up to the front of the restaurant and they'll bring your order out to you. I didn't need to call them, they will have someone walk out and check what your order is and they'll come give it to you on your passenger side. These donuts were amazing. The old fashioned donut was to die for!!! I usually love raised donuts more than cake but I would 100% order a dozen of these. The apple fritter was great too. Very fluffy and flavorful. And the best part? All of this was only $7. You absolutely cannot beat the price. I highly recommend these donuts. read more

What has happened to my bakery? I ordered the bunny buns carrot cake for Easter. Way too much frosting. The paws and tail were almost completely made of frosting. But most disappointed me the most was it wasn't a carrot cake. It felt like bait and switch. I think it was a spice cake? I wouldn't have ordered it had it been a spice cake. Pickup was easy, they had 2 people handing out boxes and we waited no more than 5 minutes. Considering how they literally sell out, that's nothing. Now as for the taste? Out of this freaking world. I ordered a custom Great Gatsby style Roaring 20s themed birthday cake. I worked with the team member Jenn for months and she was great to work with. We covered all the details and options to for my requested order. The designer did a great job of taking inspiration from the images I sent them and put her own spin on the final product. In order to choose the flavors I requested a flavor box for $10. The box was one of the best things I could have done in order to decide which flavor, frosting and filling I wanted for each layer. I decided that it would be best to have a group of friends over to try out the flavors in order to have a consensus on the popular options. After the tasting, the votes showed that the Amaretto cake and Spice cake were tied for the most yummy. The Baileys won for the filling and Vanilla Buttercream frosting was the winner. With that in mind, the base of the cake was Amaretto, and the top cake was Spice. Both were covered in Vanilla Buttercream frosting and had Baileys filling. Of course to accommodate the vegan folks I had 10 vegan cupcakes. All my guests said they loved the cake. The delivery price of the cake to the venue reasonable and everything was seamless. In all the only comment is that there was too much frosting. Eventhough it was delicious I dont think it had to be that thick. read more

This review is for the newly added Wayzata location. I went there on Thursday 9/19/24 with my mom, we were there at 10:45 in the morning. I went in excited, always looking for a great bakery and prefer to support local businesses. This location is in an area with a very tiny, hard-to-maneuver parking lot, although this isn't the fault of Thirsty Whale, so we were still excited to find something yummy for a late breakfast. Upon arrival, one of the six young women behind the counter greeted us. We picked out a Chocolate Cherry Muffin and a Croissant. They had a lot of other choices, but everything in the very small case was placed so closely together that the frostings on the donuts and other items were transferred to the item next to it. It wasn't appetizing and I should have listened to my inner voice and walked across and up the street to Benedict's, but I didn't, so we picked a Muffin and a Croissant thinking these were the safest options. And then it got worse. The muffin was cold, as if it had been frozen or refrigerated upon opening the store that morning, it was not baked fresh that day as we had expected it would be and after tasting it, it was probably a couple of days old. It was not moist; the chocolate cake was crumbly and had no richness to the flavor. The Croissant was barely baked, the outside was soft, and it was not flaky. So disappointing. Our items were placed in two white bags, we were not asked if we were eating there or taking it to go. No napkins were added to the bags. The downside is that if we had indicated that we were going to eat it there, we could have been given picnic-style red and white paper hot dog trays to put our sweets into. So, eating a muffin that was already crumbly without a plate, became very messy. We were asked if we'd like anything to drink. I asked for hot chocolate, they had a rather extensive coffee menu, so I was sure they'd have the supplies to make a hot chocolate. I was told that they didn't have hot chocolate but could put some mocha syrup in milk and heat it, umm no. So instead, I ordered a peach smoothie, which was too peachy, like it had peach flavoring, in addition to, some real fruit. It was made with cream that was not the same temperature as the rest of the items because it began to separate in my glass as we sat down to eat. Into the trash, it went... Also, there isn't a designated pick up location for your drink order. They just shout the type of drink you ordered. No name on the cup or order to identify it. You have 6 people behind the counter, drinks could be delivered to the table. When you go up to the counter to grab a spoon, you can choose your spoon from one of three containers that contain plastic, cheap, flimsy "silverware" with all of the spoon, fork, or knife side up. So, everyone could touch every spoon, fork, or knife each time you need one, or could sneeze or cough in the general area and all of the utensils would be showered with germs. So, unsanitary and gross. Each of those employees should have to go through Serv-Safe training. They haven't... The ambiance of this location is lazy. They put some fake flower vases in the corners but did have some small vases on the tables with fresh flowers. However, every table in the area where we were sitting had fallen petals on the tabletop, so that tells me that no one wiped down tables before starting for the day. If you are going to do fresh flowers, at least change the water daily or change out with freshly cut flowers. No one was wiping down tables as people moved in and out of the location. Too busy chatting behind the counter, I guess. The clientele in this area will expect real plates, fresh flowers, and tables that have been wiped down. Hopefully, this place is given the attention it deserves otherwise it will get left in the dust by the Starbucks two doors down and the multitude of other places to get breakfast pastry or scoop of ice cream. P.S. I did take some pictures if anyone from the company would like to see them. read more

If you don't follow them on social media, that will need to be one of the first things you do before visiting thirsty whale.Due to Covid and not having people in their store to purchase, they require a call ahead order which they will then deliver to your car. Because I don't follow them on social media I ended up having to order from my car which didn't cause a delay and the staff was nice. Unfortunately, we came for donuts and met with pastries. After ordering a bunch to try, including: their oatmeal cookies, lemon bars, animal cookies, Nutter butter like Sandwich & almond croissants.. The total came to about $32. Out of everything that we ordered, the almond croissants were probably the winner. Nothing really stood out as amazing or felt warranted for another visit. The lemon bars did not have a tart lemon taste you'd expect, the Nutter butter sandwich was dry and lacked the savory peanut butter taste and finally, the oatmeal cookie center had way too much butter and nothing to balance out the flavor. However, since I heard most of the reviews being about their donuts, I will update this review when I finally get a chance to try them. read more

A line is a good sign! On a rainy Saturday late morning there were a few people standing outside the Thirsty Whale. Inside is tiny, about 6-8 people tiny, but who needs a bunch of space when all that matters is what's behind the counter. What's behind the counter are truly delicious donuts. To exceed in donut making, fancy artisan donuts are great, but they gotta be able to do basic donuts right too. The raised chocolate iced (a basic donut in my book) was perfection- light and airy with rich deep chocolate frosting. An excellent "basic" donut meant the more fancy artisanal donuts were also delicious. The "Elvis" with banana custard inside a peanut butter iced/chocolate drizzled outside sounded iffy, but the flavors melded well and it was very good. Love cereal? Then the Fruity Pebbles will delight. This vanilla iced donut is covered in Fruity Pebbles cereal, and was a kid favorite. Street parking was available and easy.
