This used to be a great vet clinic, but since it was "recently" bought out (sometime last year I think?) it's gone way down hill. The practice used to be owned by a committed vet. Now I'm not sure who owns it but I was told the person/people own four vet clinics and they cycle the doctors around. The result is that in the last year I've seen 4 or 5 different vets. That might have something to do with how they forgot to give my cat a feline leukemia vaccination even though I told them that she would be an indoor/outdoor cat and that she needed the vaccine. Because you rarely see the same vet twice it's real hard to figure out what happened and to make sure things are properly remedied. (Update: One of the co-owners of this clinic got in touch with me and has told me that they have now hired full-time permanent vets. This may remedy the problems I experienced. As of yet I have not returned to the clinic and so I'm unable to comment further.) read more

Dr. Colm Scanlon has moved to the Leicester Vet Clinic!!! He is the best vet I have ever ever met. The best manner with owners and animals. You can tell he really cares about animals , he is a so kind and understanding. YOu folks out in western Mass are so lucky to have him. I took my friendly, 7-lb cat here when she got a scratch on her ear and it became infected. Dr. O'Neill has the bedside manner of an orangutan. Rather than giving my cat a chance to acclimate to her surroundings, she attempted to grab her immediately, which put my cat on the defensive. She hissed and spat and swatted. Then, rather than letting me hold her, she opted to get out huge, scary leather gloves that no doubt smell like a hundred other frightened cats and get her assistant to throw towels and blankets at my cat, chase her around and basically scare the hell out of her until she was growling, thrashing around, and biting the gloves. WHAT THE F??????!!!!!! These bozos even attempted to muzzle my tiny cat whose ear was infected. DUH. How do you expect to fasten a muzzle on a cat whose EAR is in pain, genius? It makes me feel like barfing just remembering this. Inconsiderate, insensitive, negligent buttholes. I can't say I'm sorry my cat scratched her. We will never go back there. This doctor should not see cats. read more

I brought my kitty to the clinic. The vet was immediately unfriendly because I had skipped a vaccination/check up. I had moved since the last visit so I didn't receive their reminder. My bad, should have noted on my calendar. But she made me feel like I'm a horrible person for having skipped a vaccination. You see, my cat is a completely indoor cat. I had talked to some vet students in the past and had the idea that there isn't a huge need to vaccinate her against Rabies. Plus, the day after the vaccination she usually doesn't feel good. Anyways, my kitty had some ear wax and the vet thought perhaps she has an ear infection. They did a test and she came back saying that it looked pretty good actually but there is just a little bit of bacteria. So I got some prescription ear drops. I was ready to go. At the check out desk, I realized that I should have asked the vet to wipe the ear wax away. They use a solution on a cotton swab. The receptionist said she will check with the vet and then quoted me my total bill. I asked to see the itemized list because it was higher than I had anticipated. It turns out that they were going to charge me for a ear cleaning! I don't know about your vet, but my old one always wipes my kitty's ear and I've never heard of anyone charging for it before. When I asked about it, the receptionist had a guilty look on her face. If I hadn't asked to see an itemized bill, it would have been a done deal. All in all, a bad experience. I'm never going back there again. read more

Took my cat Maddie there to be shaved (long story but trust me, she is in a loving home). The staff was friendly and attentive, the tech asked the right questions and took notes when I answered. They gave options on a care plan and a written estimate before we moved forward (estimate had a low and high range). I thought the cost was high for the work that was done (which is why I gave 4 stars instead of 5) but I wasn't pressured by anyone and the decision to move forward was all mine. For at least two years, I have had nothing but good experiences with this clinic. My 11-year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes, so Oblio and I make regular visits. The vet was extremely helpful in showing me how to inject kitty insulin shots, sorta a scary experience at first. They are open until 6pm on Thursdays, which works great for me. Everything I need, from syringes to diabetic-specific cat food is always available. The staff is nice and helpful. I am SO glad this clinic is in my 'hood! read more

Great place to bring your pets, nice staff and making an appointment was easier than we ever would have expected. We had a semi-urgent need to visit with our cat and when we called just after 11am they told us to come in for noon. Great animal care and they explained how to apply the relevant medicines while giving the first dose. No complaints. read more

I was fostering a 5 month old rescue kitten with plans to adopt. The Kitten had been at this hospital 4 days prior for routine check up before it was euthanized. I was so upset and distraught that so much issues and health had been over looked and not treated for. This could be a 1-time mistake, but it is one that will stay with me forever. :( read more

I recently adopted a rescue dog and I've taken him a few times to Union Square - each time they are efficient, quick and effective. I took my cat snowball to this vet clinic because she stopped eating for 3 days. Vet staff was very friendly and professional. Snowball must have like them also because usually she screams her head off the whole time. This time she did not scream much at all. They gave her some medication to help with her sickness and to get her to eat. Well as soon as I got her in the door she promptly told me she was hungry and proceeded to eat some meat that I had put in her bowl before we left. I am very pleased with the treatment my cat got here w/ Dr Scanlon. He was thorough and patient, and she's so much healthier after having four teeth extracted. The recovery from the surgery was a breeze, much better than when she got spayed at a different place. Also: the staff is great and it's easy to schedule and cancel appointments. And the rates seem reasonable. I was told I would be spending over $600 to have her teeth extracted anywhere in the metro Boston area, but the bill for the surgery was something like $430. I would say don't be discouraged by prior bad reviews, they seem to be about different vets... read more

The front desk staff is always nice and attentive, and the vet there, Dr Scanlon, is very nice and personable. They're great for day to day stuff like vaccines and routine physicals. However, I took my dog in several times for a runny nose and coughing and was repeatedly told that it was allergies, and that "he just sucked up some dust" and that it was nothing to worry about. My dog collapsed a few days after my third visit to them and had to be taken to Angell. It turns out he had walking pneumonia, which the vet had completely missed. My poor pup had to spend 4 days inpatient attached to an IV and wearing the cone of shame, which was awful for him and cost an arm and a leg. Dr Scanlon was nice enough to call and check in (Angell had called for my dog's medical history and explained the the health crisis). However, I wouldn't take him back there for anything more than routine vaccinations and picking up flea repellent. read more

I have been taking my dogs here for the last 11 years, through Dr. Murphy, Dr. ONeill, and now Dr. Scanlon. The earlier 2 docs I thought were fine - but Dr. Scanlon is a GEM. He is warm, caring, knowledgeable and professional. He is cautious and honest, but is not going to run/charge for unnecessary tests; a great balance. He diagnosed my dog's lymphoma and referred us to Angell, but he calls to check in on her still. The techs are wonderful too. Prices are totally fair when compared to other clinics. read more

I have two dogs that are getting on in years, and have a number of different health problems between them. I've always been very pleased with the care that they received at this clinic. Dr. O'Neil seems a little more brusque than Dr. Scanlon, but both have seen my dogs and they have always been caring, professional, and knowledgable. I am very impressed with the level of customer service as well. All of the vet techs I have interacted with have been very patient and helpful, and I really appreciate Dr. Scanlon's phone calls to check in and ask if I have any questions. The convenient hours and ability to get appointments quickly are also a godsend when you need to get your pet seen in a hurry. read more

I lost my beloved cat of 16 years this past weekend. She was under the care of Union Square Vet Clinic for more than two months. She was so very sick and finally needed help to end her suffering. The weekend veterinarian and her support staff were so kind. They were also respectful, sensitive, and understanding. They made my last memories with my cat calm and beautiful, despite the sadness I felt that day. My cat Misha is 19 years old, and has been going to Union Square Vet since he was about a year old. They must be doing something right, for him to reach this "senior -senior citizen" status! Misha has always been a bit of a "problem child" - not very sociable and sort of skittish - but the techs treat him like royalty. I bring him in for routine claw trims, and they have managed to make the process more endurable for him. At one point his weight reached 19 pounds, and they offered advice on helping Misha to drop a few pounds. Two and a half years ago, Dr. Scanlon diagnosed Misha with chronic kidney failure. I had to start administering subcutaneous fluids to him once a week. His condition has very gradually worsened, and now he has to have the fluids daily. He also has developed a hyperactive thyroid, and has to have medication for that. Misha does not care for the low-protein diet often prescribed for these problems common to older cats, and has been losing weight. He has also taken to excessive vocalization in the wee hours -- sometimes performing an entire opera while wandering around and jumping on and off my bed. Dr. Scanlon listens carefully to my concerns about Misha, and is willing to make suggestions over the phone to try before bringing Misha in to the office. He encourages my attempts to research Misha's issues online and to try alternative foods and options to help reach a sort of delicate balance in managing Misha's conditions. (For the record, Misha saw Dr. O'Neill for many years as well and I never had any problems with her.) Thanks to Dr. Scanlon and his staff's patience and professionalism, Misha has reached a ripe old age and continues to enjoy a decent quality of life in his golden years. I'd recommend Union Square vet to any pet owner. read more

Watch out for the Rimadyl blood test SCAM: I have been taking my dog to this vet all his life. His is an otherwise healthy 12.5 year old Labrador. I moved out of the city but still continued to drive the 45 minutes to see them out of a sense of gratitude and loyalty. I won't do this anymore...I needed to get a refill in his rimadyl medication and they told me to bring him in for a blood test and I did and they charged me $265.00! And this was after I refused the first two tests they wanted to do! And this did not include a visit with the vet! I should have been warned about the costs. read more

Found them being too pricey in charging for a domestic health certificate printed out copy for 30 bucks and the exam was 62 so basically i payed the 30 for a piece of paper printed out with very little detail on it tisk tisk. So disappointed. read more

Union Sq Veterinary used to be a wonderful place. A couple of years ago it was sold to another proprietor and the wonderful vet left for someplace unknown. The new vet I met, Erica Rezek, was terrible: rude, inept and seemingly money hungry. She charged over $400 (would have been over $600 had I returned for the booster but by then I was out of money) for a few shots (two cats). NO attention was paid to my poor tabby's skin problem or gum issues. This cat had scabs and lesions all over and she totally blew it off. The vet remarked that my cat probably has fleas despite the fact that she couldn't find any sign of fleas and I had been treating them with Advantage II (also ridiculously expensive). For bad breath that could indicate serious gum disease she threw some cat toothpaste and toothbrush at me without even telling or showing me how I use it. Needless to say I never figured it out. Now the problems have gotten worse and I don't know where to turn. The place is a rip off and they don't care about the animals they supposedly serve. read more

We've been taking our pets (two dogs and two cats) to this clinic for years, and with good reason. The actual vets have changed, but a lot of the staff has been there for ages, and some of them will greet my pets by name. In particular, I like the fact that the people who answer the phone are really knowledgeable so you can ask them questions like "do you think my pet needs to come in?" and they can help. The actual office is great, and amazingly pet friendly. I never thought that a vet office waiting room should be "pet friendly" until I was in this one and though, why aren't more like this? Simple stuff, like bench seating that's easy to put a cat crate on so the cat is up and away from other animals. They also don't nickel and dime you or try to push services, food, etc. And everyone from the vets to the person at the door loves and cares for animals. And if your pet is sick, they will always try to get you in that day. read more

I was back at the Union Sq. Vet Clinic two months ago, and the coarse doctor I spoke of previously was gone- whether she is still employed there, I don't know. There was a new Irish doctor there who was very kind, cordial, and seemingly knowledgeable. I thought my cat had an ear infection which the vet did not see indication of outside the ear, so gave antibiotics for an inner ear infection. The reason for 4 stars, not 5, is because I'm pretty sure it actually was an outer ear infection, as my cat's ears were still getting gunky after he finished the antibiotics. I ended up giving him some medicine from a visit last year which hadn't expired yet and think that was ultimately what helped him... though I also recognize that the antibiotics should have killed any infecttion, so can't say that the vet was wrong, just that it took a little extra time for the problem to resolve. At any rate, I liked him and feel much better about going back in the future. read more

Union Vet has treated me and my dog great. I am in the military and have really odd hours and they always work with me to get my dog in. I am a young owner so I tend to get worried at just about anything that happens to my dog....so we make frequent visits to the vet, most of the time the vet tells me it's nothing to worry about. I moved here from Baltimore and the vet I had down there took me to the bank everytime I walked in there. They didn't know my name or my dog's name either...Everytime I walk into Union vet the girls behind the desk always get up and come over and give Bo a hug and ask how he has been doing. That type of thing just makes you feel good, and puts trust into your vet. I know they are going through a new vet now but I will still keep them as my vet. I went in there a few months ago and had no problems at all. I love Union Square vet and will never leave them! I'm only giving them 4 stars just because the location. Parking can be a nightmare depending on what time of the day you go. Better location - 5 stars hands down! read more

Go to this vet only if you hate your pet. After years of bringing my pet here and giving them money for well check ups, when she was in crisis they refused to see her, saying only that they "only had one emergency spot available" per day. When they were told of her symptoms, the vet said, "it's probably just behavioral." No, in fact it was not. My cat is in renal failure, something Union Sq. *could* have diagnosed a year ago when I brought her in to check on symptoms. The vet was too ignorant, however, to read the tests correctly. My cat went into remission, but her symptoms came back strong recently and now she is dying. But Union Sq. was too busy to see her. I had to bring her to another vet, who is now managing the disease. Yes, a disease - not bad behavior. I wonder if Union Sq. vet clinic would be so flippant about treating pets if they were somehow more accountable, say, with malpractice. read more
